Security update promptness - Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

Samsung has definitely imporved in this regard, massively in fact. Last year my Note 5 went nearly 6 months without a single update, while this year, my S7 has received every single security update, missing only the May patch. Every. Single. One. And usually before the middle of the month as well.
Hoping Nougat gets released alongside the next security patch, would be willing to overlook their deteriorating customer support at the service centers for my next phone if they do so.

How is this thread relevant?

Guess when Verizon Note 4 will get MM 6.0.1~

Sprint MM 6.0.1 was released as an Odin flash by someone, with OTA likely coming within the next few days.
T-Mobile MM 6.0.1 rumored to be released within the next 2 weeks.
Verizon MM 6.0.1 -- going by Verizon's history versus the other US carriers, I guess we can expect MM 6.0.1 by about October 2016? Knowing Verizon, they will purposely delay the release until at least the Note 6 is released, and possibly even a month later because f*** the current devices owners! Buy a new f***ing device if you want an updated OS! So maybe November 2016 and Verizon says you'll like it!
The good news is, now that we have all have Developer Edition Verizon Note 4's, any enterprising dev can take it upon themselves to port one of the other carrier Note 4 MM 6.0.1 releases to our phones
I predicted about 4 months ago that we'd get MM around the end of June to early July. However, with Verizon's recent flurry of "fast" updates to MM on LG devices and most of the other Samsung handsets, I'll revise that date to end of May to early June. I am also predicting that the Galaxy Tab S models will never receive MM in any official form and will be EOL'd with 5.0.2
That's a bold prediction and I hope you're right!
I just don't want to wait the usual 6 months on Verizon Time to get updates lol
I'm willing to bet we are gonna wait a bit longer then what verizon planned due to the recent exploit found to unlock the bootloader.
No way they're gonna just let that slide without implementing a fix before a major update.

As soon as I unlock this B**ch, and flash CM13! I'm sick of waiting for them.. my old Nexus 7 2013 has had marshmellow since last sept!

Well you can't exactly close this exploit without making it impossible for legitimate Samsung updates to write to the eMMC from what I know. That's how they found it in the first place, because Samsung found a problem with the eMMC in the S5 which they determined required patching and the only way to do it was overwrite a protected region using the special write command which isn't supposed to be public knowledge. So if you disable that, and you find a problem down the road, you just made your device unfixable.
Newer Samsung devices use UFS anyways so this isn't exactly an exploit with a lot of current device usefulness. Verizon has no choice but to let this one go.
The note 4 is just about at the end of its shelf life sales wise. I don't think they'll spend a dime more on support than they'll have to.
I was a long time Samsung user who ditched them around the S5/Note 3 days when they starting locking everything down tight. I did own a dev S5 and loved that phone when I had.
So as soon as I saw that the N4 was unlocked I scooped one up on Craigslist. There's no way I can use 5.1.1 after having 6.0 for so long on other devices. I'm on CM13 now which is pretty smooth but it has the normal CM bugs... Camera that works most of the time and only fails when someone is posing for a picture, flashlight won't come on after/during camera fail, occasional reboot, wonky navigation. I've had no data losses which was my biggest concern so I believe this is a rock solid CM build. But I've grown accustomed to everything working all of the time.
I was just about to say goodbye to this phone until I read this post. Maybe I'll stick it in a drawer and see if we get a MM port soon.

Thanks for informing me on that. Haven't really kept up with all this as the past few phones I've owned have been locked down.
Assumed it'll be a simple patch for them.

LG G4 Android 6.0.1 confirmed by Rogers CANADA

Guys found it on their Website first they stated it on the 22nd June 2016 and now it says coming soon picture attached below. Lets hope that its no fake...

(Edited for forum link)
Meanwhile N is coming. Considering 6.0.1 is just a minor update wonder why it took a many months. Assuming this is real and we get it this year.
I dont carer about Android 6.0.1. Better will be when LG will prepare the Android N and we could have it as early as it's possible.
Its like this u can care for n,o,p,q,r,s..... The only thing matters is information. And we'll have to wait for the n update sth like 6 to 8 months. i think and u dont want to sit 8 months on offical v20d ger/eu. this is just some information for evrybody and not a discussion thread.
I should not have posted this....
If u want fast Updates go for Nexus or iOs
Its like this while n will come out the g4 is going to be the 3rd best and not like now the 2nd because lg is going to release a new phone for the second half of 2016 im pretty sure so 6.0.1 would be pretty nice
I'm looking forward to 6.0.1. There are numerous bugs with Bluetooth that 6.0.1 should fix.

This is really nice. I hope they finally update the EU version of the phone. Fingers crossed!

Then we might get a .KDZ and update our phones! Let's hope it's true.
I am sry for that mistake i live in ger so i didnt knew that maybe a forum moderator can switch the title to canada but anyways here is the link to the official rogers forum

I'm more anxious about this than N because this will probably be more stable than the first N releases. I just want a stable release, and 1 year before G4's release I still think the OS is half finished :/
I still have very bad battery life and some BT issues (sometimes it doesn't output audio via BT, I need to restart the device).
[If we get the new UX would be a bonus].
When the 6.0.1? I want to use wakelock with xiaomi mi band

They have updated the schedule table. Roger's G4 will receive 6.0.1 on July 21st.
But why LG is so slow to release for no-brand EUR devices too?
Seems like Rogers decided not to bother with any of the security updates for 6.0 and will just jump directly to 6.0.1 That's a pretty dangerous policy with all the vulnerabilities that they have left their users exposed to for over 6 months!
Having come from a Nexus 5 to the LG G4 this really makes me think my next phone needs to be back to a Google one.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will jump straight to Android 7.1.1 (?!)

http://www.androidauthority.com/sam...ll-jump-straight-android-7-1-1-nougat-735148/
I wonder what it means for the current 7.0 beta that is due to end in mid-December.
Many people claimed we will get an official 7.0 release in the next 2 weeks (still in 2016) but If Samsung is going directly to 7.1.1, it's more likely to postpone the release.
Sony, who wants to be the first vendor with a 7.1.1 release said they don't have a firm deadline yet because "the Xperia Concept developer team currently has the source code and is waiting for the application suite (GMS apps) and the Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) from Google." (Xperia Blog)
If that's the case, then Samsung is probably waiting on the same thing and with Samsung history of extremely-late releases of new software, I wouldn't be surprised if we stay with 6.0.1 for at least another 3-4 months..
Take it with a grain of salt (or ten), that all came from one reply to a member of the beta programme, and knowing Samsung, doesn't sound like something they would reveal like that, it's hard enough getting an answer about monthly security updates from them let alone an entire new OS version
7.1.1 is relatively small update to 7.0 so it shouldn't be a big problem for Samsung.

About XT1475 NOUGAT update

So i was on lenovo forums and found this (its for 1575 btw):
"Ok, so I've seen all the posts and comments. *I know Moto / Lenovo does not comment on Impending updates.
*
However.
*
When I called Moto Support Yesterday, I was told by two different reps that this phone's update schedule has changed, and it will no longer be recieving 7.0, or any further updates above 6.01, other than google supplied security updates.
*
Even funnier, when I asked how I was supposed to get my promised update, the rep told me to Unlock my bootloader and "Google for a nougat update, Just be carefull of hacked versions" (NOT Kidding)
*
When I asked for an ID or other information so I could track the seconnd call, I recieved reference number*170605-001691.
"
What u guys think?

Regular Motorola Lenovo support people have no idea and are not in the loop on updates. That is why if and when you are chosen for beta test you are told not to call them.
Since the main Nougat thread was needlessly closed, I haven't been able to keep track: has 7.0 rolled out for the XT1572 everywhere (i.e., across all of Europe) or are some major countries still waiting?
If it's rolled out everywhere else, there's absolutely no reason to think the XT1575 will ever receive Nougat. Why would there be a multi-week or multi-month gap for a device that's essentially identical? It probably has to do with CDMA issues and/or carriers demanding $$ for an approval process before they allow Nougat-ified 1575's on their network.

The main thread was closed from all of the arguing and was intended to keep track of the XT1575 update. Since nothing new was happening for months, it only made sense to lock it to save the admins from getting another headache from cleaning the thread again. It would be nice to have a good place to see where else the XT1572's have been getting updates though

XT1570 Style (China)
Still on Lollipop, no updates expected
XT1572 Style
UK - Not yet
EU - Most (supposedly not all variants yet)
Asia - Yes
Latin America - Yes
XT1575 Pure
North America - Not yet
And the main Nougat thread needed to be closed, it had to be cleaned by Mods several times a week because of constant arguing, bickering, whining, and needless Moto bashing that even got rather hostile at times. Leave to a few to ruin it for everyone.
One of Motorola forum administration said, that rep provided a wrong information, and they "recruite" him better. No official info about cancellation of update was provided, so I think we have a small hope.

Seriously? We will get the update... The last "beta" was just sent to testers only a few weeks ago (early August I believe) because they were still having issues with Nougat on the XT1575, and once it has been approved and found to be stable it is usually rolled within 30 days.
The mentioned "obsolete" and "we are not getting an update per customer service" is crap, and has been CLEARLY disproved on Moto's official forums... did a rep say that? Apparently they did, but they were flat out wrong... they did not have the knowledge or the authority to do so.
TBH, this update for the Pure has been a PR nightmare for Moto... they don't talk about it (which is not new, Moto has been tight lipped about software updates since before Google bought them) and it is taking a ridiculously long time to get a stable ROM, the beta testers have had significant issues with several builds, even hard brick issues early on when performing a factory reset.
Although I get people's frustration, how do you think people would feel if they they got an update, then did a factory reset for whatever reason, and the device bricked because of it?
I know it sucks... but seriously what is it going to do for you? Other than a few gimmicks that Nougat has that Marshmallow does not, the update does NOTHING for this device, no new camera API, no Vulcan support, no VoLTE, no Pixel Launcher, not even updated Moto apps. You get multi-window which honestly barely has a usable function, and clear all in recents, which is also not really important, and Google Allo added at the system level (yeah, OK, nobody uses it I know).
Patience, it will come when it's ready... I honestly don't care anymore if it comes or not because by the end of the year I will be moving on to something else since this one will be pushing 20 months for me and it is just time to move on.
I'm on an XT1572 Style, which I purchased online -- I'm guessing diverted from EU markets, since the update announcements were always in French. Nougat 7.0 has made this phone unbearable to use -- 1-3sec lags on most interface interactions, and up to 5 seconds when it feels like it. I've followed the advice from Moto support to fix it, including a hard factory reset. I agree with the post above that 7.0 adds very little value to the phone. I'm angry enough to look into a consumer law action against Motorola for the replacement value. And there is no way in hell I will be buying another Moto device -- looking hard at the OnePlus 3T.
Just received nougat 7.0 this morning for my moto x pure edition. Installed the software in 30 min. Noticed the app files are larger. Everything runs smoothly so far. The phone is a XT1575 32GB. It was a very long wait. Located in Coeur D Alene, ID. Jerry Purchased from Best Buy, unlocked, Retail

Official android 10 for mi a2 yet to release

The android 10 official update yet to rollout.
Other non android one phones have rolled out android 10 for their devices . It feels so bad Mi a2 being android one phone still have no any official announcement regarding that. Even they do not have any roadmap for the release.
The December 2019 security patch has rolled out leading with a major Chrome bug inside that.
Since October Google had pushed the update from their side, but xiaomi is taking a lot of time in rolling out the update.
Also their is no beta version rolled out for the same for android 10.
Kindly the senior devs please spread this post to xiaomi, so that they will look into this.
Thankyou.
That surely is the last Xiaomi device I'm going to ever buy. Completely disappointed. The main reason I picked this "Apple boldness" device is the Android one project, second the price. Now I know it was kind of a waste of money for what I wanted and needed from a smartphone. Even Samsung are rolling out Android 10 with a lot more of useful resources sooner, when not, they offer roadmaps and news about it. Putting aside its stable security patches releases even for A5 2017, month after month, my previous daily driver.
