How reliable is the Oneplus One now? (March 2016)

After weathering the storm of chaos as huge crowds rushed to get the One, hearing countless horror stories of failing phones and terrible support, and waiting for (hopefully) all hardware problems to rear their ugly faces, I'm at a loss now--in March 2016--as to whether or not buying a used phone, said to work perfectly by the seller and has been tested enough by natural selection, would be a good idea if I can only return DOAs.
I'm calling on everyone here not to post just epic sob-stories; instead, if you had an issue (hardware, software, firmware, or other) please post what it was, when it showed up (how much use, any possible user error that may have caused it), whether it was fixed (and if it was, what it was fixed by), how long it lasted, what ROM/software version you were on, and any other important info.
Thanks so much in advance; I really like the specs and the original reviews, but just can't be sure if it got back up after falling flat right out of the gate.

I got a oneplus one. I love it!. Soon as I got i t I rooted and flashed CM13. NO ISSUES WITH IT AT ALL.

Nearly 2 years and no regrets..

I only got this phone at the end of 2015 and I haven't regretted a bit, ever. It's an amazing phone, I never had any problem with it. The metal around the screen is the only thing that wears out, it's not awful but it as some scratches, and I'm very careful. Believe me, for the price, this is still the best budget phone you can get

I have the ability to get it for as low as $180 here in the US. I know that is quite a good deal compared to the original price, but with the OPX having been released with similar specs and such I'm not quite sure I fully grasp whether or not this price is a steal, or just a good bargain. Thoughts?

Absolutely hate it. I regret trading my Nexus 6 for it. My data has been spotty and I keep getting random reboots. Today, I was using the GPS and Google Maps lost the ability to connect to my phone's mobile data during the commute. Completely overshot my destination, thanks OnePlus!

When it comes to data, I'm not too worried as I use tracfone (so I'm not really used to the convenience of data on the go) and have great coverage around here--unless it is so significantly worse than the Nexus 6 so as to cause a steady 3-4 bars on one to equal intermittent service on the other.
For the random reboots, when did they start? What ROM? When do they happen?

On paper, the OnePlus One and OnePlus X may seem similar, but it's only so much.
The OPO features (as compared to the OPX)
> a higher-tier variant of the Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC) @ 2.5ghz
> a larger 5.5in LTPS (IPS LCD) display (screen size is subjective, some people prefer smaller)
> better band support for US Carriers (the OPX lacks necessary bands)
> a better rear-facing camera (capable of 4K DCI/UHD recording) and can be vastly improved with Sultan's modifications
> WIFI AC + Dual band (2.4/5.0ghz)
> a larger 3100mah battery
> NFC (the OPX doesn't have NFC, seriously)
But most importantly, the OPO is sustained by one of the largest dev communities ever, right here at XDA. Even after OnePlus/Cyanogen discontinues official support for the device, the community will keep it alive and strong for a VERY long time. The OPX lacks this kind of love and support. Unsurprisingly, OnePlus themselves seem to be neglecting the OPX.
The OPX features (as compared to the OPO)

I might sound biased, but that is justified by everything I've just listed. It's clear who's the winner here.

Thanks for the insight. I kind of wonder why it's so cheap when it's so competitive with other phones of the time. The Galaxy s5 seems to go, used, for between $250-300 while the OPO goes for between 200-225 normally. I get that last generation phones can go down in price, but it seemed unexpected that it didn't even out to pretty much the same used price as most of those other phones. I was just thinking there must be something I was missing.

This is expected. The Galaxy S5 is a Samsung device and as with all popular brands, these devices can go for a high price, from when they're released to even a few years later.
The OnePlus One was OnePlus' very first device and it was named "The Flagship Killer" for a reason- that reason being it had the same specs as popular flagship devices (ie. Galaxy S5, Xperia Z3, HTC One M8) but costed much less than they did. This is why the OPO, new or used, continues to be sold for lower than any other popular flagship device.
As a note, OnePlus claims that they barely made any profit at the time due to selling the OPO for such a low price, but they actually had a lot of backup from their overseeing company, OPPO.
Trust me (and everyone here), the OPO is still an amazing device. Everything about it screams high quality.

Running Sultan's CM13 - had similar issues with CM12. Switched to CM13 because Sultan was actively developing it. Tried other roms but I didn't like them as much as Sultan's rom. Charging is also atrocious - 2 hours to go from 10% to 100% with the stock cable and charger.
The funny thing is, I had full bars and data, GMaps just couldn't connect until I restarted the phone.
I had three reboots in the past hour. One with the phone laying on my desk. Another while scrolling through GroupMe. The final after I took a screenshot of my lockscreen. I don't use xposed or any other customization app.

Best phone ever released till date, we can edit ANDROID to the core.. I am using since aug 2014, only thing i regret is camera compared to todays phones but even it lives it up to the mark

I've had this device since November 2014 and going strong. This device is one of the best purchases I've ever made in terms of a device. Unless I cause damage to it or there are new band support that's needed in the near future, I might actually try to keep this device until end of 2017.
I've really have had no issues with this phone, probably my only real gripe is the lack of OIS support.
You really can't go wrong with the OnePlus One.

Being a phone junkie, I jumped at the chance for a flagship killer, and do not regret it. Looking at all the phones we have today, this one still stacks up great, and outperforms my buddies lg v10 (which was what I was going to get, but couldn't justify the price) in a lot of areas (mostly stupid golf games), though all his hardware is top notch.
This device is affordable, and still runs as smooth as day one. Dev community awesome. I had the slight yellow tinge when it first came out, but it's gone. I had another friend of mine buy the op2 just cause he liked my phone so much but wanted the dual Sim...

That was one of the things I was wondering: there were a lot of people having problems with the touchscreen, they apparently had a firmware fix but I still saw some reports of problems afterwards. Haven't seen any recently, but no real discussion about what was the issue, whether there were some people with hardware problems AND some people with firmware problems or if there were just firmware problems. I think I might have seen something on their forums but I honestly don't trust that place with the reports of censorship and all the fanboys dismissing problems.
EDIT: Just found this thread that describes what causes the issue. Definitely an involved process, but at least it suggests a problem other than just faulty-digitizer roulette. I hate the lengths that Oneplus goes to to try and hide this kind of thing. They could gain a lot more support if they were just transparent about their fumbles and mistakes instead of trying to sweep stuff under the rug and waiting for it to create a scandal.

Yeah, I remember reading about that .. Hoping they fixed the issue as I'm contemplating purchasing one new from OnePlus.

Just wanted to follow-up on my post from yesterday, OP.
I'm now on rooted stock COS12.1 - latest update, as of yesterday night. Only rooted apps I use are AdAway and TiBu (might not justify root tbh haha). But it's still not that great. The phone was definitely much smoother with Sultan's rom, with occasional hiccups. Just tried to do a raid in COC and the phone went unresponsive until I locked the screen but I had to resort to rebooting to make it actually work. It actually froze on the "rebooting" screen and I had to hard reboot.
For reference, I've had the phone since September 2015 and have been holding out for this year's Nexus but I might have to bite the bullet and pick up the 6P. My phone timeline is as follows: LG MyTouch, HTC Sensation 4G, Moto G 1st Gen, Nexus 6 and OnePlus One. Favorites have been Moto G and Nexus 6.

Is Le Pro 3 right for me? Advice please.

I'm sick to the back teeth of my Galaxy S7 Edge.
My battery life has taken a nosedive in the last year, and I hate the 'edge' screen which is more of a nuisance than anything. Performance isn't anything to write home about either, considering the hardware inside it - it lags and jitters occasionally (although it is generally quite fast).
Every time I get a Samsung phone I end up wanting to go back to a vanilla Android one. And I don't want to root this S7E because unlocking the bootloader trips a firmware fuse, permanently breaking your ability to use Android Pay and voiding the warranty,. I wouldn't care if I was keeping the phone but I want to sell it.
So the reason I'm in this forum is to find out whether the Le Pro 3 is going to be a good fit for me. The hardware specs I am happy with. But I need to know if stock Android ROMs are fully 100% stable & able to be used as a daily driver? I've looked at a few of the ROMs in the dev forum and they all seem to mention IR not working and 4K recording not working. If that's all that's wrong then I could live with that. I am well past the stage of wanting to flash my phone every week, I want to 'set and forget'.
So if you could give me your honest opinion of the phone itself with an AOSP ROM that you use and any drawbacks, then I would really appreciate it.

4k is working now. TBH even the leeco's EUI isnt half bad once you flash one of the debloated rom's that you can find on here, and is incredibly smooth/and battery efficient.
Regarding nougat, from my own exp., it's been my daily for a month now. I find it extremely stable, havent had a single crash, suddenr reboot or whataoever. My personal favouritr is Omni, smooth as can be, but have tried Lineage and RR, no complaints there either. I use my phone all the time, charge it over night, and get regularly over 10h SOT thnx to @darkobas, some kernel tweaks, and leeco of course for jamming in 4000mah of battery lol.

I have Lex720 3-4 months, never find single issue with this phone. Roms, I flashed many of them, atm i am on stock 6.0 TARS 23S by Steve Mars I like this one everything works good, good battery life.
But I don't use my phone a lot, no game, everyday I got over 50% juice left can use it for another day. It's comparable to Oneplus3/3t for performance, battery life maybe better. If you don't care about headphone jack it's as good as any phone I think and it's 300$, can't beat it.

Best phone at its price you can get!
Great hardware specs, jack isnt even needed tbh you can get cdla earphones and everything will be good. Especially with dolby+viper you will be amazed.
Only con i find is camera at low light conditions (day light its fine) but thats fixable if leeco updates the software regarding img processing and i believe we will se improvements with EUI Nougat. Also no OIS but it has EIS.
Regarding rom, tora 23s,debloated 20s and now miui that is been worked on by also tora and turbo are great roms.
I dont like CM roms but as far as i have seen in postsk omni rom is great.
Seriously the phone is a beast and if we give it a little more time all roms will be finalized.
Point is, are you going to buy it with the launch of mi6 plus? If i were you i would wait to see the full specs and price.

I am using latest stock 21s with root and underclock. Performance good and battery life is also insane.

What he said. Also, I use the provided USB-C to 3.5 adapter with my sony earphones, the sound is excellent!
I bought the Lepro after 3 years of Nexus 5 ownership, and while I adore that thing to death and though it was going to be near impossible for me to find a phone who I'd find a worthy replacement, it was riddled with battery issues/wakelocks and crap from day 1. The lepro just blew me away, and still does.

OP3T ones work on our phone, same SOC. I used them as a basis to make my own two scripts that I toggle via a QS tile

I've had this phone for a while and everything is great except the camera quality, you will see a huge difference compared to S7 Edge.
Phone is running very stable with LineageOS 13, i use it as my daily driver and i don't have any problems so far.

Not interested in Xiaomi phones. I did consider the Mi5+ (i think) before i got my S7E but when i read about the hoops you have to jump thru to unlock the bootloader then i lost all interest.

I've read all the replies and I'm still on the fence. Mainly because I'm one of those people who doesn't like buying a phone unless it's brand new, ie right at the start of its life-cycle!
I held off to see what the Le Max 3 would be like when it was announced, but I assume no Snapdragon processor = no dev interest and no ROMs.
You guys are knowledgable about Chinese phones - what else is coming out soon? I would wait for the OnePlus 5, but I've read that they're going with an edge screen (that I'm desperate to get away from). I like the idea of a Snapdragon 835 and 6GB RAM though.
Is there anything else on the horizon that I should be considering?

if you dont need a phone right now then you can wait a couple of months, the axon should be announced soon, also the honor pro 8 is already out

If u want support and great specs just go for mi6, period. The only phones i would buy would be either huawei or xiaomi from chinese brands. Leeco was the only exception because at that time nothing compared to its specs plus i am not a heavy-camera user so it was just the phone i needed.
If i were you right now i woudlnt go for it to be honest. Just my personal thoughts though.
Edit; If i was given again the opportunity to buy out of all 821sd phones i would still go LP3. I am not dissapointed at all. But right now i dont think its worth it with the launch of 835. Although the diffence is not great its better to have the latest phone.

For Xiaomi phones no development, for me right now the best buy is Oneplus 3t

I hope I'm not late to this thread. Please do not buy this phone. There is no UNBRICKING support for this device whatsoever.
Please look around in this matter. There are about 5 threads of sudden deaths of this phone on Leeco.re, 3 more threads of sudden death of this device on leeco official forum where they will make u a bouncing ball and about 4 or 5 bricked threads over here on xda. This device is highly unreliable and shady after-sale support.
Until you live in a country where leeco officially retails (like india, HK, china) please refrain from buying this phone. I really hope you do not end up into a trashcan like I did when I bought Le Pro 3 without my ground work. I loved the phone until it lasted.
Your best bet is to get One Plus 3T which despite its expensiveness, has extended AOSP support and genuinely amazing community so far.

Advice whether to still buy the Axon 7 in 2018

I have been looking to buy a new mobile phone since my LG G3 bit the dust a few months ago. The one that piqued my interest is the Axon 7 due to the audio hardware (dual DAC and stereo front speakers) which is the one thing I use my mobile for above everything else. I have been looking at the LG G6 with its quad DAC also but the cost difference is hard to ignore especially if the Axon can give me what I am looking for.
I realise that ZTE have discontinued the manufacturing of the Axon 7 but they are still available from some vendors and rumours have arisen about its successor appearing soon. ZTE is allegedly also releasing Oreo to the 7 in April.
So due to an eventual show of the 8, do you think I would be better waiting through January for the Axon 8 or just pulling the trigger on an Axon 7 right now?

What's your budget? If you're willing to go higher than $400, I'd say get one of the OnePlus phones. Released this year. They have an exceptional dev community (not that ours is bad but theirs is just incredible), and the phones are remarkably solid, especially given the price.
If you're on a budget, then yeah, get the Axon 7 or one of the older OP devices (OP3/3T). You wouldn't have the amazing audio you get with the Axon, but the phones are really, really good.
The Axon 7 is still getting dev support, which is great, but I don't think we'll get to see Android P on our device. Many devs are already losing interest and some people in the community are driving the ones that are left away.
Another option to consider is a used LG V20, which had amazing audio as well.

I am a poweruser so I tend to root my devices almost straightaway usually with magisk so I can use V4A.
I was tempted by the OnePlus 5T and it probably wouldn't be out of my budget, it looks like a really solid phone but with the reports of poor sound quality, lack of DAC and no SD card slot it just didn't fit the bill for me.
I did check out the LG v30 and the specs are an absolute beast on that but alas...so is the price being new on the market lol. The Samsung S8...ERM no...I vouched after they started the bit locking fiasco on the S4 I would never buy another Samsung.

I am trying to avoid going down the root of second hand devices as I am a big believer in you usually buy someone else's problems especially with manufacturer obsolescence being on the tongues of every techy these days. Its bad enough with the non replaceable batteries in devices!
Bang for buck the Axon 7 is still very desirable...its just the audio I can't ignore and for the price. Bit of a shame that the dev community is losing interest in the axon 7 though, seems a really solid device.

My view from a value consious type is that the A7 is great hardware for the money and importantly, it still runs fast. Getting O may help keep a little development on it but stock is good anyway. I personally wouldn't buy an LG phone, too many successive devices with serious problems like bootloop which never seems to be fixed. LG don't want their phones to last long.
If you're not the sort of person who must have the latest, then for the price the Axon 7 is still a compelling buy.
If you only choose a phone from the list of Daydream certified devices you ensure a well rounded performance and decent sensors etc. It really comes down to how much you want to spend and nothing much can touch the A7 for value versus it's real world performance. Forget benchmarks and all that junk, it's all numbers and running an Axon keeps reliable performance unlike say, a Samsung which will get the stutters sooner or later. I'm keen to see the O update being closer to stock Android on my Axon, but even on B09N it is still smooth and responsive leaving no reason to even consider buying anything else.
All that being posted, I would like to see the next flagship Axon but like all brands, ZTE will try to grow their price tag as public perception improves. Just look at Huawei as an example. Got too expensive and now put themselves beyond my price level. Wouldn't consider Samsung, HTC and all the others keeping prices double what they should be.

I am trying to avoid going down the root of second hand devices as I am a big believer in you usually buy someone else's problems especially with manufacturer obsolescence being on the tongues of every techy these days. Its bad enough with the non replaceable batteries in devices!
Bang for buck the Axon 7 is still very desirable...its just the audio I can't ignore and for the price. Bit of a shame that the dev community is losing interest in the axon 7 though, seems a really solid device.
@Gases hope you don't think I am a whining my friend, just me obsessing about my next device lol

When you say that you use your phone for music, what do you really mean? Hi-res, or just FLACs? With V4A or stock?
The AK4490EN is capable of like 768 kHz/32 bit, but ZTE limited to a hideous 96 kHz/16 bit...
Still it sounds much, MUCH better than a standard Snapdragon DAC. Even on custom ROMs. And even more so on custom ROMs with V4A, if you're using MP3s.
I think you have to completely avoid midrange devices. The best choice is to get a high-end CPU even if it's one generation old. The SD6xx series are a world apart in terms of performance.
Also, why do you say that the dev community is losing interest? We lost 1 or 2 devs this year. It was always rather weak, but we're a cozy community and seemingly managed to push enough to get ZTE to get a working Camera2 API and some other stuff (time will tell).

If you're not the sort of person who must have the latest, then for the price the Axon 7 is still a compelling buy.
If you only choose a phone from the list of Daydream certified devices you ensure a well rounded performance and decent sensors etc. It really comes down to how much you want to spend and nothing much can touch the A7 for value versus it's real world performance. Forget benchmarks and all that junk, it's all numbers and running an Axon keeps reliable performance unlike say, a Samsung which will get the stutters sooner or later. I'm keen to see the O update being closer to stock Android on my Axon, but even on B09N it is still smooth and responsive leaving no reason to even consider buying anything else.
All that being posted, I would like to see the next flagship Axon but like all brands, ZTE will try to grow their price tag as public perception improves. Just look at Huawei as an example. Got too expensive and now put themselves beyond my price level. Wouldn't consider Samsung, HTC and all the others keeping prices double what they should be.

Totally agree on the LG thing, the G3 was a solid item on the outside but its internals were a different story...like I said manufactured obsolescence! Baking the motherboard on mine was its final death cry lol

Sorry I should have made myself clear when I said mid to low tear phone, I was talking about price not internal specs. Totally agree the SD 820/821 chips might not be the latest and greatest but they are far from obsolete and still perform great... would be nice to have say an 835 but I am not in it for the numbers anyway.
As for my audio format, its a bit of a mix...minimum 320 Kbps to lossless, it really depends on where I got the files from. The max impedance on my best cans are 40 ohms so no studio level stuff.
As for the dev community losing interest...no offence intended, was only expressing my feelings on what I was told by Gases. Cosy is a good thing, its a powerful tool, means there is a passion for the product and if ZTE are listening...even better.

You'll be OK with the Axon 7's DAC -its soundstage is clearly better and it has a lower noise level. The community is nowhere near dying out since most devs maintain only a few devices. And the SD820 still works good.
I don't believe the Axon 9 (I think they'll skip 8, like 2019) will be released before at least May or June. They said absolutely nothing aside from 'there will be a successor to the axon 7'.

I would say yes, I bought mine in Nov last year and it was delivered in Dec. I am loving it every minute with zero issues that I am unhappy with. I bought it to replace a buggy Zenfone 3 (midrange) and I am totally pleased with it.
Cost is a major factor as I had already spent a load of money on the ZF3; it cost the same as a current midrange device (Xiaomi A1) and yet performance is twice of current midrange devices (double benchmark and QHD screen). Yes, it is nearly a 2 years old flagship, but the question is do I need that much firepower from a current flagship? My answer is not really, yours maybe different.
I do not root my phones, had a really bad experience when I hard bricked a device due to faulty instructions and then I got laugh at by the "community". So I only update my devices officially.
I also do not update my devices to the "last" update as I had bad experiences where a device became crap with the final update (likely due to it not able to handle the load?). So I update them once out of the box, and that it. My Axon 7 was updated from B11 to B09 when I got it and it is likely to stay on B09 until the day it dies, unless the feedback on future updates are very positive here. Again, you may use yours differently.

If you disregard all the numbers and technicalities and just want a good sounding phone to play your MP3 library off, you can't go wrong with the Axon 7.
I mostly use bluetooth but do plug in still.
I did this afternoon in the car. Feeding music to the car hifi by wire sounds awesome, for sure it's better than bluetooth and louder too. I just use MP3 and can still clearly hear a difference.
You don't need to be swallowing up 50Mb a song with hi res FLAC files to justify owning the phone.

I've got my Axon7 last month to replace dying Meizu MX4Pro. Few thoughts on the buy.
A7 is fantastic mid-range phone, I've managed to get it quite cheap in almost new condition (~€230).
Performance wise it is brilliant, no hiccups or anything (bear in mind I was coming from Android 5.0 2014 phone )
Now, the sound. I have mixed feelings on this. I'll tell you why.
The speakers are great, but when I say sound quality I mean the headphone out. I didn't have much time to compare it to MX4Pro and my DAP (Cayin N3 - same DAC chip as A7) but I still feel that A7 is lacking a bit. Defo less power than my old phone (or the DAP), I need to crank up the volume to get the detail and dynamics level I want. I'll be trying it with my old C&C amp to see if it will improve.
Don't get me wrong, sound quality is very good, I think it is just the power. But again, my only reference is DAP which has lot more power and one of the most musical phones that was manufactured to date (MX4 Pro has ESS9018 DAC and OPA1612 as an amp).
To sum up - lovely phone with good sound, sound is definitely better than 99% phones out there. If you can get it cheap(-ish) and don't mind 2 year old hardware go for it.

What version of the A7 did you get? Is it on Nougat OS? If it's A2017G on Marshmallow it should improve on stock Nougat.

Got mine yesterday in the post from gearbest as a reluctant replacement for my Nexus 6 .
Reluctant, as I wanted to 'upgrade' so had to be amoled, stereo speakers, qhd etc to at least match the beast of a Nexus 6.
Just been using today and smaller screen size takes a bit of getting used to, but sound via speakers is on par with Nexus 6 I'd say not yet tried plug in headphones. Screen is much better and the build quality too.
Very pleased so far.
This weekend may see me attempt boot loader unlock, TWRP, Magisk and Lineage install; although I must say the ZTE implementation isn't half bad, and thats on Marshmellow.
May I ask where you found it for sale? Seems most places out of stock now, and felt quite lucky to snap one up.

Fasttech had it listed...missed all the holiday discounts though and I think the fact that every other company have sold out has driven the price up on FT slightly but I am not really bothered...I am now hoping it slips past the folks at customs discreetly lol.
I need this to get here asap as my 5 yr old S4 is on its last legs...I think it must have caught something off my deceased LG G3 haha!

I've had mine 2 weeks, and absolutely love it. It replaced a Sony Xperia Z4 (with the 810 which allowed the phone to double as a hot plate, foot warmer or small space heater.) The sound is everything I expected from the Sony and never got. The screen is beautiful. Battery life is amazing. The Z4 had a max of 3 hours life, and this Axon 7 has seen me through 10 hour days listening to bluetooth most of the day, with 35% batttery left. I found mine on Amazon for $317, the box was scuffed up, but everything inside was pristine and untouched. I'm rooted with WRP, Substratum and Xposed. I have not felt the need to leave stock 7.1.1 as of yet.

Stock Nougat is quite good. I find that here a lot of people are way too trigger happy on the flash custom ROM scene. I only do it if the phone needs it. Custom ROMs usually have issues.
ZTE will release an official and reasonably light Oreo for it this year too.
I think after that, good custom ROMs will follow as they released O sources to a well known dev. I personally wouldn't be bothered with any current Nougat customs seeing as O is coming.

I will probably upgrade and run the axon 7 stock for a few months same as I did with my G3.
ZTE have certainly extended the axon 7's presence in the market though bringing Oreo to it, all the major brands would have EOL'ed support to a device by now especially with it starting on Marshmallow.
Has anyone had the need to swap the battery out yet?
I know there are a couple of good teardown vids on YT and it doesn't look too bad.

its A2017G on Nougat, it starts to grow on me. I've sold my DAP already because I like the sound so much.

With my previous (pre MX4Pro) Android phones I was first to flash custom ROMs. But with A7 I'm happy so far with stock Nougat. Miss the root for few things, but I have too much stuff on the phone and too little time to bother with unlocking bootloader and rooting it as I understand I will loose all present data.
Now, when the Oreo comes, that might change

Oneplus 6 is there. I'm thinking of upgrading from my Huawei mate 9 to oneplus 6. I get tired of the little development of the Huawei community. Someone else goes to oneplus 6?

I dont believe the OP6 is on sale yet. Still I have decided to buy one as well. The mate 9 is great and all but I still can't get used to the UI and the development for this phone is pretty much absent.

Nope. Out of the box, they have way too many bugs, customer service is terrible.

The Huawei Mate 9 is my first Huawei device. Couldn't be happier. So much so that I got a P20 for my wife recently. If I had to replace the Mate 9 today I would take the P20 Pro.
I'm not into rooting or changing ROMs so the lack of a 'development community' doesn't bother me.
Before acquiring the Mate 9 I also considered the OnePlus 3T but the lack of local technical assistance was a big no no. If I can't buy it locally or get it repaired locally then I'm not interested.

What do you mean no development? We are the first phone to have trebble compatibility, and able to install pure android roms. Samsung s8 and oneplus 5 did not even bother to give trebble compatibility just so you will want to buy their new phone because it adds another feature. Oneplus 6 looks very similar to mate 9, camera probably isn't that much better either. Your point is invalid. Huawei have been improving tremendously and updates are more and more frequent.

Shoot, from what I discovered in 2014, when the "startup" OnePlus came along, all they are is a beta tester for the parent Oppo.
Once people found out that OnePlus is 100% owned by Oppo, who is owned by BBK electronics, their mask as a "poor lonely startup" got busted. Then, with the oneplus one, the distortions & out and out lies started to appear.
Stereo speakers that ended up being nothing more than twin MONO speakers, the "yellow stain" which they first said was because they set the screen color to a more warmer color. That turned out to be a lie, the screens were rushed to meet demand from the supplier and had not cured properly (I fixed mine by a combo of UV light & leaving it in the sunlight). Problems with
accessories missing or not working, having to pay shipping to get the phone and even worse if you had problems, sending it back!
Then, they came out with the OnePlus 2, which had the ill fated 810 chip, which was a problem for every manufacturer that tried to use it.
The OP3/3T was the better of the bunch, but then they went "cheap(er)" with the 5/5T and switched from an optical image
stabilized camera sensor, to the electronic image stabilized sensor, with a faster lens hoping to make up the difference.
It's "not bad" but not as good as the OIS on the 3/3T.
Then what do they do with the 6? Glass back? Why? To make it more trendy,hip,colorful & stylish? That just allows them
to jack up the price. And, if it has a glass back, why not throw in wireless charging?
Nope, got stung by the OnePlus hype in 2014...not going that route, again unless I can walk into a brick store buy it,
and take it back if it doesn't work.

I'm going to hold onto this phone for a while. I'm running OpenKirin, which while it has a few bugs, has substantially fewer than EMUI 8 (which prevented some apps from running correctly). I like having a headphone jack, I like the screen, I like the battery life, the camera is fantastic, I like not having a glass back. But I will probably bite the bullet and buy a Google phone next, so that I get updates without having to hack my phone. I'll buy a bunch of USB-C to 3.5mm dongles.

Well google some of the pixel problems you will be amazed. Bad screen, and mic not working after update are the most common.

When the Mate 11 (or whatever they call it) is announced, I start watching the price on the 10, just like I did when I had the 8, and then
10 was announced, the price on the 9 DROPPED. Once it hit the around $500 mark, I upgraded to the 9.

My Mate 9 was a fabulous device.
My OnePlus 5T is updated almost every week.
And it's VERY quick.
Huawei prices and the feeling of being dumped (I had to wait a year for updates!) It's a worrying trend
Am I going to wait for the Mate 20? We'll have to see.

I am hoping the Pixel 3 will be better. Meanwhile I am reasonably happy with the Mate 9.

I probably won't buy another Huawei -- their recent decision to stop providing bootloader unlock codes means they are too unfriendly to XDA. OnePlus gets a lot of XDA support, which is fantastic, but I don't want a device with a glass back. I drop my phone too often. (Spigen has been great on the Huawei.) It is too bad because the Mate 9 has great hardware, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

what?? i dont know if your just shilling but none of what you said makes any sense. if your talking about the "optimizations" that hauwei implemnets, than maybe...... maybe! if your talking about the visual stuff....... then no!!! huawei could implement an OMS skin which could be easily disabled but instead royally bones the ui to look like ios.
android is about choice, if i want ios ill buy another iphone and just take whatever apple provides. huawei does great hardware but its software is just utter crap! its too bad they'll now be shunned in the US.

About OS? You can compare if you already used both. There's an option to enable app drawer on huawei phones. For OP5t's OS. Youll see how boring it is and how secure your credit card is.

what?? im going to assume that there is a language barrier here. if so, i apologize. the problem here is still that you seem to equate OOS with aosp which it is not. no one uses stock AOSP. even google doesnt use stock AOSP on the pixels. they use a modified pixel specific ROM.
all OEMs use AOSP and then modify it for their use. most OEMs now just add custom optimizations but leave the UI alone so the users can customize through OMS skins. Huawei still bastardizes this with their iOS like skin which is horrible. the battery optimizations are also a headache because they often kill important apps and the lockscreen mod is just terrible!
the huawei ROM has nothing when compared to an AOSP ROM such as AOSP extended, Paranoid Android or even LineageOS. these ROMs provide great features and endless security updates.
if you prefer the stock ROM thats great for you but it doesnt compare to a ROM that gives you options and full control of your device. i suggest you give AOSP Extended a try.

Interesting to read through the topic...Had multiple Samsungs in the past as my daily drivers but since I lost a couple of them due to emmc chip failures I moved away from the ugly overpriced Samsungs.
Everybody has different opinions and preferences, the times I was flashing custom Roms are over. For my work I need a reliable phone with good battery life at a descent price. The Mate 9 and Mate 10 are performing as expected without any problem both running stock Roms. Never had any issues after upgrades, even from Nougat to Oreo was painless. The Mate 9 from my wife did struggle with the upgrade from Nougat to Oreo. Had to factory reset this one to get it working correctly.
I can see a trend here, Huawei seems to go the same direction Samsung took, their devices getting more and more expensive and their customer service goes down as their popularity increases.

I'll do my best to explain my understanding:
In this current month, OnePlus is pushing out two new phones (7T and 7T Pro) and working on supporting the smart TV they just released in India. The OnePlus 6T is not their primary focus by any standard. They're busy keeping the 7 and 7T series as current as possible to push their sales. I'm not a software developer, and I don't know how big OnePlus' development team is, nor do I know what they're tasked with. I was eager to experience Android 10 on the 6T myself, but the newer devices come first in terms of software support. That's part of the reason why you don't see development moving along very quickly. For the 6T, we don't have official Android 10-based firmware or proper sources to build with. What kinda development is gonna pop up when you have no sources to work with? Not much, I'll tell ya that.

I think op is asking about custom rom support and if so there is one simple answer. There is no need because oos is THAT GOOD! Put that in your survey. And as far as custom roms go the OP 6T has quite a few good choices when compared to the 7 which has almost zero.

Hi, I'm just sign in to say calm down, guys, android 10 will officially come this month, check the oneplus telegram channel. Why is this late? 3 reasons here:
Oneplus 7
Oneplus 7t (yes, newer devices always come first when it is about updates)
officially claimed errors in developing the ROM and they don't want to release a piece of sh** as other manufacturers do in order to rush updates --> they want to release an update that can give us that buttery smooth user experienxe we all got used to

Maybe this is a little shortsighted, but I think the wiping the entire device and losing your data thing scares a lot of people away from switching back and forth on this phone and probably slowed the demand down for more custom ROMs. It's very time consuming and easy to screw up if you don't do it all the time. The slow data speed of the USB-c port also plays a role in how slow it is to back up stuff to your PC and then load everything back up after.
I know other OP phones have this issue too, but combine that with the fingerprint problem and the quick release of OP phones since the 6t came out, I think you have a perfect storm of people just happy enough with OOS, and maybe jumping to the beta program.
Having come from a lot of other phone brands in the past, there is a lot less clamoring for certain custom ROMs because people actually like OOS, versus whatever Samsung, LG, or HTC put out in years past. Just my opinion though.

Google implementation is not always the best Devs try to do the best but sometimes things not help in this case the encryption by hardware plus partitions a/b and the massive headache for most people and devs trying to make things a lot easier for example look here OP6T Custom Roms everyone has different flashing instructions……make sense? And maybe One Plus is to pay the Google failures implementing things that in the long run need be reverted well this is my opinion in Android world

I personally hate OOS - crappy UI and battery guzzler.
I cant change fonts , no theme support etc without root unlike many manufacturers like Huawei and Samsung.
Plus, the so called "speed" is not there on my phone - stock oos is laggy af
The only custom ROM that seems to work in a stable fashion (except fingerprints) is cr droid - other roms dont seem to work and always fail to install on my Oneplus 6T.
I regret buying this phone - i had the oneplus one earlier and it still has better rom support despite being obsolete.
I shall never buy a OnePlus again - maybe Samsung or Huawei it is for the next time..

I have to respectfully disagree. I know everyone's experience is their own and all have varying opinions on software.
However, OOS is highly regarded as one of the best "stock" Android operating systems on the market. It's very close to vanilla Android as what the pixel devices run. I've been a Nexus/pixel user since the Nexus 5 and left the Google line to check out this whole OnePlus hype that came with a smaller price tag.
I regret nothing about purchasing this phone. OOS is phenomenal. It's basically vanilla Android with subtle improvements in the UI that just make sense and create a more fluid experience without thinking about it. The RAM on this phone is ridiculous and has a ton of speed. My pixel use to get hot all the time with intense use....I can't remember the last time my 6t heated up on me (keep in mind I don't game on my phone).
As for third party development, I think we have it pretty good. There's at least 5 stable custom ROMs to choose from and hell I lost count on the kernels. I'm running skydragon ROM and easily push over 7hrs of SOT daily. Easily change system fonts and colors.
Not to mention edXposed is a thing now. You can run Xposed on stock OOS install gravity box (the king of themeing) and make your phone look ENTIRELY different.
All I'm trying to say is, we have it pretty damn good. I'll be running and crack flashing this phone for at least another year.

Well maybe your phone won the silicon lottery- cuz my phone doesn't seem to be as fast as its competition.
I have the 8 gig ram model - just below the McLaren edition. It has had issues from the time I've bought it - constant lag , overheating while on oos.
I took.it.for diagnosis to oneplus service centre - they had no clue as to what was happening!
Then, what i decided to.do was to search for custom ROMs . I found that there were no stable ROMs and i had to bear the stock rom till i found a semi stable build of cr droid. What i feel is that ever since oneplus has released this specific phone, they have gone lax on software and have stopped actually innovating (not in terms of hardware, in terms of their initial outreach for solid budget friendly nexus esque devices that have unfortunately imo now bloated into the expensive POS gimmicks they sell now.)
Just in case you want to know what oos i had , i had oos 9.0.10. I couldn't even play any YouTube or audio, forget phonecalls.
But that might not.be the case for you - chinese phones tend to follow this trend of lottery and maybe the way people use their phones varies.

Haha, there is plenty of development. Those talking about Huawei and Samsung, buy one of their new phones and see how much development there is....

Hi, McLaren user here.
Before buying this device I was using Pixel 2XL, my 6T destroys it completely in performance, I know 835 vs 845 isn't a fair comparison, but the difference is too much to blame the processor, a thing as simple as taking a picture is an extremely slow process in my Pixel because when I open the camera app I have to wait 3-4 seconds to take the picture (The app opens, but the viewfinder is black and the shutter button can't be pressed) while with this device it's: open the camera and the app is ready to take the picture, and the performance in general (Transitions, apps opening, etc, etc) is much better on this device, I don't remember having lag or some kind of slowdown on this device (You should never say never, but I think that this case could be an exception), I'm not a "light" user, I use my device for work, studies and life in general.
I only remember one episode of overheating and it was my fault (Summer, the device was charging and I had the great idea of playing asfalt 8, yes you can call me dumb lol). Maybe it's a hardware problem? It seems too strange to me, I know many people with this device and the only problems in common are: The terrible memory management that OOS does, and the quality of the camera.
Regarding custom roms: for almost two months I was using AOSIP 9 + Neutrino, and I was very happy, I even had the feeling that the fingerprint sensor worked better in that rom than in OOS and the memory management great (A huge amount of apps loaded in memory without any problem, that was a pleasure), a week ago I flashed AOSIP 10 and I was quite surprised, obviously it was not as stable as 9 but I was expecting something worse sincerely, I went back to OOS because the safetynet failed and I use Google Pay quite often, but ignoring that problem I think I could use it as a daily driver without major problems.
I think my comments seem very pro-OnePlus but my experience with this device is very good, and as I said before I find the problems you have very strange, maybe you should send the device to OnePlus again, saying that you have some super strange problem or something so so weird like: hey, my device starts lagging and then shuts down randomly, I don't know, maybe you are lucky and they send you a new one.
Edit: Answering the main thread question:
The OnePlus 6 had many users, and the 6 > 6T change was not a great evolution, then the 7 and 7Pro were released, so many switched to that device.
In addition, the on-screen fingerprint sensor was something new, Android did not support it natively and each OEM opted for its own implementation, OnePlus made a somewhat strange implementation by calling it somehow, phhusson did reverse engineering of the Xiaomi HAL and made great contributions to this device, that helped a lot, but perhaps those contributions came too late, OnePlus 7 was very close to being launched and many people were waiting for it to make the swtich.

Hmm your suggestion sounds right - lemme try contacting the OnePlus service centre again.
I honestly love the look and feel of the OnePlus 6T ( i have the mirror black- almost similar to McLaren except for the lack of orange shimmer) but the constant lag and overheating made me write such a negative view of the device.
Plus , sadly the dev scene is not so hot as their older phone ( Remember OnePlus One - how cool the modding scene was for that phone )
