Hi guys,
first of all i have to say i love xda and its developers! Every smartphone i owned has got a custom rom on it.
So you've probably heard this question a billion times. i can get a lg g2 for 350 euro (+ a metalic skin for 10 euro). the problem is that in 2 weeks the lg g3 will come out and it will cost 550 euro (awesome flipcover for free!). so while 550 euro is quite overbudget to me, i keep wondering if the 200 euro is worth it considering the larger screen, free flipcover, awesome design and the much needed micro sd slot and of course the gorgeous ui! i'm not planning on putting a custom rom on my lg g2 right right so it bugs me a bit knowing lg wont put the new ui on it. So what is the best value for money considering i will probably stick to the g3 a bit longer?
sorry for my bad English, i'am Belgian
Thanks a lot guys and keep up the good work
its tough, depends on your needs. There is a good thread in general section called will you ditch your lg g2 when g3 comes. There are some comments that will help you make a choice.

g2 is better value cause it still has good specs. However g3 is new, latest. Lot going for it.
Oneplus one is also nice if you can get an invite hahah

Before someone deleted this thread I'll have to say that always go for the newer phone unless you already had a G2 than the upgrade might not be much and display and battery life are questionable watch Erica griffins video.

Hey all....
Much to my surprise, I woke up this morning with an invitation to buy the 64GB Oneplus One. I went ahead and made the purchase. Whether I keep it, sell it or use it....no clue.
The G3 was my response to not being able to get the OPO invite. However, after having the G3, I have grown quite fond of it. I have concerns about the customization level even with xposed running. Customizing is important to me. Storage is whatever, not a huge deal. Photographs and videos are a mid priority on my list.
Anyways - anyone here have a chance to play with both? Which did you prefer? I have 1 week to return my G3 before I'm stuck to it. I will most likely return the G3 if the OPO doesn't arrive fast enough to be on the safe side. I'll deal with the return fee.
If anyone has any experience or thoughts on it please share. I read some other threads which were less constructive and more just bickering.
Thanks everyone.

i gave away my invite..the g3 is far superior than the opo
I just got an invite also and I also bought it. Main reason is because Franco is developing kernels for it, and it being fully unlocked. I like the g3 but the software is pissing me off

From a hardware perspective I am quite happy with the g3. That being said...I am Stoll yearning for more customization. The software has been frustrating me as well.
One question I need to answer is if the cost is worth it. 350 is an awesome price.

Even if the devices were similar, I'm so annoyed with OP's business practices that I don't want to support them anyway.
How is the software frustrating? If you download Chrome, Hangouts, Google Camera, and install the Google Now launcher and dialer, you pretty much have a stock experience. Hell you could even get rid of the lock screen and use a replacement to get a more stock feel. Xposed modules will let you customize almost anything Cyanogenmod can.

this is a good post. after all is said and done, they will be quite similar with what is installed. for me, i like to tinker with ROMs and building environments (i'm a ux/ui designer) to play with.
bloatware can be removed so i'm not worried about that. at this stage it is mostly a matter of time. I already ordered it and will just turn around and sell it and keep the G3 or switch to it. I haven't put my G3 down since I got it. Truly an awesome phone.
I may have ordered it because i had waited 4 months for the invitation. Finally comes after I already getting into a committed relationship with the G3. LOL.

Gave my invite away. G3 is leagues ahead, and I am rather fond of LG. The One Plus is a good phone for the price, and the software is top notch. (I have the One Plus ROM installed on my G2. Same hardware I believe) I just believe the G3 is superior in terms of everyday usage. My two cents.
How do you guys get invite to OPO? Should I just register on web site?

I am seeing a consistent trend in this direction. The every day user seems to prefer the G3 while others justify the OPO due to cost, faster updates (assumed by the claimer), and better battery life.
Once I get it in my hands - I will know quickly which I prefer. I just hope we get an unlocked bootloader on the G3. Doesn't have to be right away but soon!

In no way am I bashing the One Plus, I rather like the price for the specs inside. Applauded Google for bringing the Nexus line into fruition, and pushing manufacturers to not screw over the average consumer with mediocre specs for a lot of money. I just am not seeing the justification of a smartphone of that price, when build quality, screen material, and overall spec wise, the G3 beats it (for not a lot more money, I might add)
Another reason I shied away from the One Plus, is the shady dealings of both the manufacturer, and how CM royally screwed over a large contributor base. Again, a great phone, but with shady dealings and practices involved I can see no reason to jump ship to that.
Why would anyone even compare the one plus and g3? It's not even close. People want the one plus because its hard to get.....period.

I have both phones. In my opinion, the G3 is far superior than the Oneplus One in every way hardware wise. The G3 is thinner, smaller, has a better camera, and the screen is gorgeous (everyone has their own opinions). The only thing I like about the Oneplus is cyanogenmod's theme chooser, other than that I'm more than happy with the G3.
Plus, I'm sure cyanogenmod will make it's way to the G3 sooner or later since our T-Mobile G3s are bootloader unlocked.
Edit: Oh, just wanted to point out that the sandstone back of the Oneplus is AMAZING! It feels much better in hand than the G3, but it is also wider and taller which is a no-no.
Sell the OPO for like 100 more than you paid for.
Can't go wrong with either really, as long as you can get an invite for the OPO. They're picking up the pace with those though and you should be able to purchase it outright by the end of Q3 (August)
If any of you have spare invites I still haven't gotten one yet and I'd love one for tinkering. The random invite system is dumb. I was one of their earliest supporters but I didn't create a forum account for a while so I got burned.

I have both phones, and to be honest, they don't really feel like competitors. The G3 is polished, slim, and solidly built, but is heavily restricted with its locked bootloader. The OPO is a flashaholic's dream, but the hardware isn't as nice. Mine has the slight yellow band at the bottom of the screen, too. The OPO feels much faster, but not overwhelmingly.
Well y'all, it's been a long run with LG but I am jumping ship to the OnePlus One. I have no animosity, but just feel it is time for a change. I have used LG since the Optimus G (great phone, not so great battery), all the way up to the Optimus G Pro, the G2, the G Flex, and now the G3. I received an invite to get the OnePlus, and decided to go for it.
I'd like to thank all of the great developers working on the phone, especially @jcase, @autoprime, @thecubed, and the many others that tirelessly worked at getting root, and a bootloader bypass to this device. I am glad I got to be a part of this phones development journey from the start (first phone I bought on launch day). I am selling my G3 (on Swappa currently for 355. If you tell me you're from XDA, I'll cut you a deal), but I will be active here providing answers to questions I can! Thank you all again!

It's OK, but can you post pros and cons of OPO compared to G3? Is OPO that much better overall, or you miss something of G3? Is OPO camera the same or better quality?
Not to start a flame wars but to get truly and unbiased comparison from one who have owned both devices
I had both for about three weeks and out of the box i preferred The OPO. Over The course of three weeks I started missing The G3 for certain things. Wireless charging, smaller footprint, sd card, having an extra battery for my Orlando days, the list goes on and on. The battery life of The OPO was badass, but some things didn't feel refined enough though. The OPO went to my brother in the end. If there was anything i miss more than anything about The OPO, it would be that sandstone back it had. It felt pretty amazing.

Have you been living under a rock or are you just complaining that the bump website hasn't been put up that will allow developers to bump their ROMS and Kernels for use on the G3? If you haven't heard about bump, then a little reading is in your future, but the short story is that we now have the ability to flash whatever we want using the G3 bootloader via a method called "bump."
And here it starts it seems every one is leaving the g3 crap.

I said im keeping both devices. I'm just laying out the differences in both devices i own which is a "FACT". For LG G3 our bootloader is locked. XDA devs did a amazing job in bypassing it. On the LG(Company) part they are not going to do anything to unlock our bootloader officially. I do know the method called "bump" by the way.

You know, I like my G3, but I got a OnePlus for my sweetie, and I really like it simplicity.. so I got one for myself to play with. Still using the G3 as my DD. I'm on the fence about switching, as they both have some interesting features. If I could 1080 the screen and all apps work/present well, I'd stay G3. The 4K is awesome, though.
Good luck.
Wow, that's a strong move. Although G3 is pretty much locked, 1p1 is too rough.. overall rubbish.
I'd suggest keeping both and then deciding if that's what you want.
But it's been a month now, eh.. guess it's too late
I understand there is a trial and error, and one can always use the US996 boot for the rom and see if it loads the H918 rom.
But is there anyone who can confirm this works? I am trying to trudge through threads and it's far and few with a definitive answer.
Please, any information is appreciated.
As I am stuck deciding between H918 and the US996 model LG v20 to purchase.
The h918 and us996 are closely related. Even tho it seems the h918 is getting a lot of attention dev wise, they mostly focus on that device first then add other variants of the v20 to it. So I'd say if you have no patience you can go with the h918 if your willing to wait you can get the us996. But it's always good to have an unlocked device, hope you don't take this wrong.

I wanted to say thank you for you reply.
These are my sentiments actually.
I understand T-mobile version is the most beloved when it came to the v10 (as that was the most easily rooted one).
And it continued here, albeit LG posted their own bootload unlocked for the v20 on their website.
I see there is some dev support for the US996. But it's falling behind the h918.
And of course factory unlocking is the way to go. I'm just thinking of longevity of the phone. 2+ years down the road.. Which will have the most dev support?
I don't upgrade every year. I think it's ridiculous.
And I understand v20 is in its infancy.. But which wins long term? H918 or US996?
Because the h918 is getting all the love in the beginning.
Will there be a point where the tides turn and some more seasoned developers focus on the US996 and the h918 falls behind?
I understand it's silly to speculate so early. But these are my questions before I hop onto this v20 train. I want it so bad. Lol.
You're asking us to predict the future. Logic says most people have carrier models because not everybody wants to put up $600-$800 upfront for a phone. Either one you choose now guarantees root. Up to you. There are some slight differences like 918 having FM radio. Which features are more important?

Genuinely. I never thought about that. Up front for the phone. That's very true. That's probably why t-mobile has taken off.
Maybe a pros and cons of each device?
I understand the US996 is more capable with networks.
And the h918 has fM radio.
Besides that. There really is no difference?
It all comes down to EOL after the phones. I think tmobile is a safe bet. We have resurrection remix rom already for that variant... Which I run on my galaxy s3.
So longevity is important to me.
I bought the note 4 910H. Boy was I wrong. Barely any roms. And the snap dragon version has resurrection remix among other 7.1.1 roms going for it.
Interesting topic. I'm not concerned about if the 996 development'catches up' to the 918. The question to me is still there be enough.
I too am a longer term user. I'm on the T-Mobile version of the Note 4 so I could have root. I'm generally not enthused about putting ROMs on, as I find there are virtually always issues of some kind.
That being said, it was getting slow enough that I finally started putting ROMs on it, and finally landed on Maximum Overdrive's ROM. It is a great ROM, and has allowed me to extend life of the phone...in fact I'm still on it. I see he is doing a ROM for the 918, and had indicated he will not be developing for the 996 because he does not have one.
I'm interested in the 996 mainly because it will work on both AT&T and Verizon. Data is so bad where I live that I'm considering changing carriers. If not for that I'd get either a Oneplus 3T, or a Mate 9. I'm getting tired of paying $800 for phones.
Would be good to hear that ROMs are interchangeable.

This is excellent. I encourage all discussion. I'm sure I'm not the only one experiencing this dilemma.
In all honesty, I'd probably stick with my note 4 until it borked.. But there's no support for my model, really. Very little. And it's stuck on 6.0 marshmallow. Lame.
A lot of note 4 users seem to find their way over to the LG V20 side. It's almost like the bigger brother in a way.
If I knew what I know now. I'd have bought the tmobile model too, or close to it. For the support it has.
Also, I believe the maximum overdrive is already out for the v20?
Are you planning on moving to the v20?
I spent 800 for this note 4.. Not including the square trade warranty.
Its just nice to be on the phone that can last with developer support.
If lg keeps it up. I'm sure the v30 and v40 will be outstanding.

As I noted in the post, Max OD is writing for the 918 only. So, even if I went to a V20, I couldn't use the OD ROM...unless it is determined that 918s will run on 996...but everybody says "Don't do that".
But in fact, I have finally decided to NOT go with the V20. I keep reading about folks having the lens on the camera break, and some are emphatic that they did not hit it or do anything to cause it. LG is NOT warranting them for that issue.
I've seen it often enough that whether it is caused by a bump or automatic explosion it's often enough to turn me off of the phone.
So, I guess I'll be hanging on to the Note 4. BTW...I originally had a AT&T model, but it got so horrible with lags and stuff, I sold it and got the T-Mobile version, and it has paid off.
I have given strong thougth to all the latest 'hot' phones: Oneplus 3T, Xaiomi, Asus Zenphone 3, ZTE Axon 7 and a couple others. All have their short comings, either poor picture, not available in intl that would cover both Verizon and AT&T, poor GPS, poor community support, or in the case of the V20...exploding camera lens.
So, my Note 4 will have to hang on a little longer. Interestingly, it is working good enough that I question why I want to get another phone...especially when they are $800.
Eventually I'll have to give up on some of my 'must have' items on the list...and probably have to pay too much money.
Lens break? Do you know how small a sample that is? And have you seen some of the pictures? It was obviously impact. Some people are in denial. Always some thread about something. What phone hasn't a bad battery life thread?

I'm sure it is a small percentage. And I'm sure a small percentage of folks that have that happen even know about this forum to come and complain.
Optimus G, G2, and G3 (current phone) owner here. Is this phone going to be a unlocking nightmare like previous LG phones? IE bump on the G3? Deciding between the G6, S8+, or waiting even longer. Rooting and unlocking is a must, and if this phone is going to be as finicky as previous LGs I think it might be time to jump ship after 5 years with LG.
Edit: Just wondering about peoples predictions, because I scanned the forums for the V30 and G5.

Well, the carrier S8's have an even lower chance of root than the G6 if the S7 has shown anything. Carrier S7's can't even have custom roms, only modifications to the stock rom.

Thanks for the info. Samsung always had lively development back in the day, so I guess I just assumed it would have it now. I'll keep an eye on the G6 and S8 forums to see how things go. It really sucks that the HTC U ultra doesn't have a headphone jack. I would have picked it up in a heartbeat. HTC really shot themselves in the foot. For now, I guess I might just stick with the G3. It has EVERYTHING new phones have except for a fingerprint scanner. Only thing underpowered is the GPU.

I highly forsee the G6 getting root. At least the T-Mobile version should since it can be bootloader unlocked it seems.
No idea on the G6 yet, but the V20 has/had it as an option, and I haven't found a reason to give up my hotspot with it yet. I love Samsung phones, but not having the option of it, is a killer for me.
G3 I bought early and got it rooted early. G6 I'm hoping for an early breakthrough, wouldn't hold off buying (though I'm waiting for a good sale on the us997 or VZW variants), as rooting became progressively tougher as holes were plugged.
Recent Samsungs (including contemporaries of the g3, IIRC) have been really tightly locked down.
I really love/want root. After almost 3 years with a rooted G3 I'd hate not being able to use AdAway, XPrivacy, etc.
It's getting harder and harder to root. And sadly there is less and less demand as well as the market being spread thinner. While I would love root (miss Titanium Backup as well as Tasker) to be able to remove or freeze unnecessary apps, I'm actually really happy with the phone as is.
