Sony wants to be the first manufacturer (besides Google) to release Android 7.1.1 Nougat
Sony Xperia X Performance-5
Sony aims to be the first manufacturer outside of Google to release Android 7.1.1 Nougat. According to Xperia Blog, Sony’s developer team has stated that issuing Android 7.1.1 is its “number one priority†and that “if you spot any other vendor (excluding Google) releasing this faster than us, prepare your rotten tomatoes!â€
Android 7.1.1 was recently released on December 5 for the Google Pixel phones and Nexus devices, and Google made the source code available to manufacturers via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on the same day. When exactly Sony intends to release its take on Android 7.1.1, and to which devices, isn’t yet known.
Sony was previously one of the first manufacturers to roll out the Android 7.0 Nougat software, bringing a beta build of it to its Xperia X Performance handset on November 2. Sony has already confirmed that the Android Nougat update will at some stage roll out to its Xperia X and Z5 series, as well as the Z3+ and Z4 Tablet.
Do you think Sony will be the next manufacturer to release an Android 7.1.1 Nougat build? Give us your take in the comments.

How can they talk about 7.1.1 if they didn't release 7.0 for z5 and others?!

Well, the current flagship is another phone. Which already has 7.0. The current flagship is always the first to receive an Android update.
And if they are so sure they will be the first it means the update is basically ready and will come very soon.
The owners of the z5 and others.. with Android they should be happy they will probably receive a Nougat update.. Eventually.. Sometime in the future..

I would say the others will get it soon, but it's my guess though. I think they learned the lesson with MM deployment being the 4th to release it and, for some devices, having to retract and fix some more bugs. The negative reviews might have costed them a lot, and they should know those figures.

According to the official Sony Mobile blog, we are indeed getting the next major release of Android:
http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2015/10/06/sony-xperia-and-android-6-0-marshmallow/
Excited?
Fantastic news!
Been debating whether or not to splash out on a Z3 Tablet Compact and the fact that it's also getting an update might push me over.
Cheers for the link

This time updates will come faster because sony is moving to close-to-stock firmware. Faster doesn't mean next month though Maybe December-January.

They probably don't want to repeat an as sloppy start as with LP, so I'd guess somewhere between Jan-Mar, but the fact that they're moving closer to Vanilla may affect that..
Personally, I hope that they will expand the theming capabilities of their current theme engine. It's already quite good but being able to theme more the official way (no rooting or modding just swapping the themes on the go) would be great.
You think that next update will be closer to Vanilla from Sony's Android™ Concept??
Kinda pity the Z1 users. Their device is more than capable to run Marshmallow. But we're not here to talk about them. I'm kinda not that excited about the Marshmallow update. I just want Sony to release a bugfree update in just one release. Is that really too hard to ask for?

I don't get why Sony have to change the home circle to a house and the phone icon. I hope they keep it stock and get rid of that coloured notification bar
Should arrive around Dec 2016 then once the Networks have pissed around with it!

Well be happy that we get Android 6.0 ^^
Just somewhere and keep positive
Ok guys, since we're all waiting in here, seemed like a good idea to start this thread... If anyone has any 'good' news they'd like to share about the update, please do so here
Also, when the update is out, would be cool to have everyone post their comments and experiences in this thread, keeping it tight!
At this point, we don't seem to have anything set in stone on when this update is coming, I'm just hoping on a couple of good fixes with the update, like the auto brightness issue, camera optimisations, smoothness/lag issues etc..
What do you guys hope to get to see in the new update?
I hope it wont take long.
Misleading title
I'm kinda happy with my Z5 so far (I encounter bugs and issues here and there though). I'm a little bit less impressed with Sony when it comes to fixing bugs and releasing updates.
Mashmallow release date: October 5, 2015
October... November... December... 1/2 January... still no release date. I'm not talking about the actual ROM, just about a release date... (January? February?)
And I'm pretty sure they received the Marshmallow sources way before October 5th and they use a pretty-near stock ROM. What's taking so long compared to, for example, Motorola or LG (already on Marshmallow)? I mean, yeah the KitKat -> Lollipop transition was pretty steep, with a lot of new code, but Marshmallow and Lollipop are close cousins, use the same design, ART runtime, etc.
Or maybe it's just me; After using custom roms for years, and not having to wait that long after a manufacturer to update its phones, I became impatient :|
At least Sony update their phones I'm happy to wait when it comes it comes I'm tired of expecting. We had 2 year updates with the original XZ so I'm more than happy
Sent from my E6653 using Tapatalk
I don't understand why the Z3 series has the Marshmallow concept and Z5 doesn't.
Waiting is okay for me, as long as the update brings something big, like new feautres. But at least Sony should tell us when they're going to release Marshmallow - it's now a bit long time already.
I hope to see new redesigned UI as current one is really boring and these colorfull icons in menus are no longer elegant to be honest, it does not look consistent to me any longer.
Camera blur fix and low light improvements along with 4K 60fps and intelligent stady shot are expected.
Battery life for sure needs to be improved as well as lags and response of the phone.
Bug fixes please.

It's a shame because I'm waiting for the marshmallow update to see if it's worth me keeping this phone or selling and getting a nexus 6p
Sony never promised MM to release in 2015 for the Z5 lineup, according to sources the update is going to be released this month.

I'm thinking the same thing, either swapping it or selling it for either a 6P or a G4 (or even my previous Moto X Style I swapped for this device)
They need to fix and improve a lot of stuff for the device for me to keep it..

It was, like, a month ago... Nothing new.
I have marshmallow on my 6P and I tried the concept on the Z3 and it's not that much of a change. It does bring native fingerprint scanner support that hopefully Sony will bring forward with their own scanner. Also adopted SD storage with it's a bit of a mess on its own.
Another thing I've noticed, because app uptake for new versions of android is slow (right now about 5% of people are on marshmallow) there's a lot of bugs to be ironed out by devs at the beginning therefore IMHO is much better to get onto the new big releases a few months later after Google puts them out.
I think Sony does a fine job with all this. By the time they came out with Lollipop most bugs had been ironed out and they quickly brought it up to 5.1.1.
Sony uk announced the tentative date of marshmallow update for its flagship models.
According to sony uk the marshmallow start rolling out from 7th of the next month.
first set of update of marshmallow for xperia z5 series, z4 tablet and z3+
Its seems tetative date. May be sony do it on time.

Perhaps,*yesterday’s reported*release date of 7 March is true after all. If this firmware is the official final release, then expect the same build number to appear on the Xperia Z5 series as well as the Xperia Z4 Tablet.
Sent from my E6683 using Tapatalk
What the Hell, Sony launch a flagship that has got crap load of fundamental issues leave us in the lurch by not providing us updates (even to the current build) pretty much three months. So our only hopes was to wait for MM which was previously announced for mid this month and now 7 March, before we know it, it will be Mid to and of March.
Sony could at least do us a favour and release a bug fix firmware for Lollipop to see us through, instead of all of us feeling like we have been dumped on, after purchasing their flagship. I have been with Sony since the Xperia Z launch and I am now of the opinion the Z5 will be the last Sony
(I am not the only who feel this way, some have already jumped ship. And Sony wonder why their mobile business is failing) really Sony it's called support.

Personaly I would go with OP3 or nexus devices. Good specs and developer friendly.
I like OP3 and Xiaomi mi5 but I would miss the SD card... I would consider Huawei P9 or LG G5, but these have poor developer support. Any alternative?

I would have hope if it wasn't for the fact that we don't have an official CM13 yet. All the builds of the CM12.1 are even nightlies and don't offer the audio and camera quality that Stock has. Let's be real, Sony sucks at open sourcing and the community can't do magic
Sure it sucks, but why is anyone surprised? The Z3 launched September of 2014, almost two years ago.
You really can't blame Sony, two years is pretty standard for updates. Even Google only gives two years of guaranteed updates for the Nexus line.
iirc the concept developers are trying to release the kernel sources, which would allow the devs on xda to build better roms.
Sent from my D6603 using XDA-Developers mobile app
The Z3 is an really nice device. Sad to see that Sony say goodbye to us. I hope customs ROMS can help.
I have Android Nougat 7 Preview 4 running on my Xperia Z3 (and it spontaneously reboots 24 times a day which is a major problem that hopefully the real version will fix). I mean how can they NOT release a real version of Android Nougat?
Well the user base did come together and made Sony change their minds about Xperia M2 and lollipop update... At first it was cut out after which Sony later decided to roll out lollipop for that model...
Sent via Xperia Z3
I think z3 shouldn't use mm or lollipop rom. Because the device will be very hot and it'll make touch screen died. I know someboby have to replace thier touch screen.
Sony cant release N for z3. Google/ Qualcomm removed msm8974 support from aosp N kernel. Sony would have to revert these commits which is the legal issues that the concept Dec was talking my about on g+

No, sony is just retarded.
the best news will be Z5 WONT get Android 8.
Z5 with 3gb ram, the best build so far has been Android 6 - 32.2.A.5.11 , it was the last build on Android 6.
ever since on android 7, the device overheats and battery life is a bit shorter and ram usage is high.
YES i agree sony has ditched Z5 poorly after announcing that Z project has been discontinued and z5 was never properly distributed or marketed (atleast not in my country)
the same goes for the upcoming builds where they are focusing more on X series and when in Jan2017 X got android 7, z5 also prompted for an update to 7.
I will be downgrading my z5 to 32.2.A.5.11 and will keep it there for good!
It would be nice, let see what demands will it have
I too tried nougat, no go without xposed, sticking with rock solid marshmallow
Yes - there's a very active development community - OP never stated from $ony
Z2,Z3--> 6.0.1
Z3+,Z5-->7.1.1/7.1.2
Sony makes devices as pair...
You guys know that nougat was planned for z3, and it even had developer preview build, but google or qualcomm messed up with some drivers or requirements, so all snapdragon 801 devices didnt get nougat update.
Sent from my E6653 using Tapatalk
Official Android O? Sony tried to update the Z3 to Nougat (it would have gone 4.4 -> 7.0) and were only stopped by Qualcomm/Google/driver issues. No reason for the Z5 to not get 8.0
may be 8.0 requires Vulcan which z5 lacks ??????????????????

I think we won't get O as our update support ends soon, the 2 years of update support is soon on EOL and I'm sure Sony is waiting for that so they don't have to update anymore.
Well I have an Z5 Premium but the whole kitakami series (Z3+ to Z5) gets nearly same updates.
I would be happy if Sony wouldn't mess up FWs like they did with Nougat but well I'm sure they did that because This series should die to replace it with the messy X series.
So don't expect too much guys. You also don't need to expect so much that we get 7.1.2
When XZ1 and so on are released we also can say goodbye to our devices finally because Sony will dead patch them like they did with Z3 (look battery life between 5.1.1 and 6.0.1)
So my hope goes to OnePlus 5 for now
