I have an unlocked vibrant. When I tap on Software update it says "no firmware", i'm guessing this simply means there is no firmware update. Reason I ask this is if there are updates available to the phone, would I still get them via software update even if i'm not on t-mobile's network?
thanks in advance.
p.s. am a total droid noob
No updates yet
If you mean your using it on ATorT or another gsm network I would guys that you would not be pushed the update but not for sure. If your root you could always update manually.

Thanks for replying. I'll wait till 2.2 comes. If it my network doesnt have the update by then ... i'll root and put it in myself.
Updates are pushed by the carrier. That said, I would assume you would not receive updates for the Vibrant.
Why did you get the Vibrant, anyway? Doesn't Rogers use AT&T's 3G frequencies, rather than AWS?
The short of it is: you will probably have to root and flash to receive updates.
You know....I am soooooo fed up with this!!! and I need help.
I have auto-updating turned OFF and software scheduling updates OFF, and then now, I just connected to my Wifi connection and my phone started to download a 350MB software update bundle even though every AUTO Checking of Software Updates are TURNED OFF. I dont know why its still downloading updates when I have all of these disabled to automatically check for updates.
Please see print screens.
I DO NOT want ANY software updates to be downloaded especially I dont even know what updates they are.
Please help me on this. I want this to be disabled.
Just sick of this!!!!! I mean really....
Now, I do not really know what this 300MB update bundle was, but it wasnt the Android 4.3 update as I just checked.
I have no clue whatsoever on what updates were installed.
How can I check what updates were installed?
Thanks

If you have root you can disable Samsung updates by deleting FWUpgrade.apk and FotaClient.apk (and the odex files) with root explorer.

My phone is not ROOTED.
Can you post screenshots of this please on where I can find this in order to disable this?
I want to disable auto-updates because Im afraid it might "break" things.
Thanks, I would appreciate some print screens.
Will Android version 4.3 be downloaded automatically as well?
Now that, I will not mind if 4.3 would be installed automatically since I heard that should fix the "lag" issue on the screen on most S4 phones.

Ok, if I root my phone which I do not want to do then is there anyway to disable these updates?
I just want to conserve the phone storage space which is now approx. 8.36gb and therefore I do not want these updates.

Since your phone is factory stock an update wont break things.
Samsung updates are not to be feared.
And the updates. Dont waste space... as the software gets refines you get more.
I now have 9.1 gigs when I use to have 8giga when I just got the phone
Samsung is optimizing the software and it is getting slimmer.
Updates do not waste space.
So relax... it sounds like this is your first Samsung flagship.

Hope not....

You will get 4.3 automatically if you leave the software update feature on.
Samsung update services are decent.
For example the Samsung Galaxy S2 was updated to 4.1.2 via OTA even tho it is considered an old phone from the Gingerbread 2.3.4 - 2.3.6 era. (FEB 2011)

Yes.
But my advice... leave auto update on.
If you tap the check for updates button you may see an update but it wont download because the update server space is full.
Your fear is understood but unnecessary.
Its best to let it download by itself over wifi.
When it is done it will ask you if you want to update... it will not reboot your phone without you knowing.... nor will it install new software without you knowing.

Sorry, but one more last question. I tend to turn off my WiFi on my S4 most of the time even when I am at home.
Now I enabled the Auto Updates as you recommended. But as most of the time, I have the WiFi OFF and only enable it when I need to.
Will that be OK for the updates?
So far, I did not get the Android 4.3 update.

3G strains the battery much more than wifi bro, leave wifi on if you can for better battery life. OTA`s can be downloaded on 3G but wifi is cheaper and faster. 4.3 isn`t out yet, will take another 2-3 months for the official one, leaks may come earlier.

As the user above says.
Leave wifi on for better battery life when you are at home.
If you turn off wifi and do not want the phone connected to the internet make sure you turn off mobile data as well.
With your internet service off: The update will just take longer. I am not sure the updater service downloads the data in pieces as a torrent client or download manager would do.
So its best to leave it on... go to sleep and wake up to see the notification that the update has been downloaded and ready for installation.

If you have problems after update, you can make factory reset, which will erase all personal data from the phone and fix the errors, keeping you with the lastest firmware. Now you can go to application manager/all apps and find SoftwareUpdate. Disable it and I think, you wont be able to update before enabling it again. No root needed to do this.

No you can't roll back as you would on a PC from the phone itself.
What you will have to do is download the version of firmware you want and like and use a PC based software called ODIN to re-flash the phone.
If you do this you can keep your old settings (it wont wipe your personal data) and "roll back" to a version you preffer.
However updates seldom if ever break things in my region. I do not know about other regions.
For example: I keep my S4 STOCK STOCK STOCK so I have never had the need to roll back any update.. and nothing so far has broken in the 4 updates I have received over wifi.
Other people may have other experiences, possibly bad ones with apps crashing or the phone being slow.
So what they normally do in such a negative case is a Factory reset.
A factory reset will have the new firmware but it removes all your settings and downloaded apps and presents the phone as if it just came from the factory.
Your settings and apps will then be reloaded once you log into Google and / or your Samsung account.
So relatively speaking it is not a major hassle.

2 gig update to add Milk Music. Awesome.
In all seriousness, haven't noticed any changes yet.
Got it as well when I plugged into my laptop running the VZW updater.
BOF1
Didn't get a capture of the original kernel info.
The Milk app is only 12MB so one would have to assume there was far more updated.
anyone else take this upgrade? im downloading it now, just hopefully it doesn't cause any performance issues!

I haven't noticed anything different. I disabled milk music as soon as saw it. Other than that no change at all. Weird! However, 5.1 will be rolling out the end of the month.. Long over due!
I just finished d/ling and updating via Smart Switch (Kies) as well - no noticeable changes here either. The only differences I notice are the Baseband & Build versions now end in BOF1, and of course the addition of Milk - which was promptly disabled. For some reason - under Options>System Updates says 'Software update is temporarily unavailable" when I tap it now. Will keep checking to see if I can find anything else...
No changes here either, although the kernel version seems to be a little different. Also this app that I circled, doesn't look familiar at all.
Just found something new. When using chrome if I go to droid life or yahoo.com, the status bar turns pink or purple. Never did that before.
Edit: never mind! Didn't realize that once you turned off the merge tabs part, or goes away. That's dumb.

I believe that LTE Broadcast Manager thing has something to do with Verizon's new LTE TV Service. In other words, more bloat!

I had the pop up for this software in kies about 2 hours ago but lost Internet connectivity while the update downloaded via kies and it all stopped, I restarted my computer and now opening kies it says I have the latest software in OAF. Anyone know a way to trick it and bring that OF1 update back?

Yes, to get your update, pull your battery, restart your pc and try again. No matter though you will get the update again. As I stated before, 5.1 will be rolling out towards the of month. Be patient, because droid Turbo just received the update this past week.
Im in Perth and my S7 Edge is rooted while using the German Firmware APD1.
Thats it, no Xposed or any other modification.

thanks

Latest firmware is not out for Australia yet. I keep checking Sammobile every day for it. It shouldn't be too long now before they release it.
Does it matter which carrier your on. As optus vs Telstra vs the rest... When we get the updates of the ota, what's good about Sammobile?

nevermind, I just checked the Play Store link for NAB,
people are complaining about it. Seems the app is not compatible with the April Update of Android.
I had root on my S7 Edge when I was in February 1 Update and the NAP app works. it stopped when I updated to April 1

I got my update there. Its gonna be awhile for the update to come here in Australia. Samsung S7 EDGE around the world is updated to the April 2 security patches, Edge touch palm fix, native DPI change and Camera shape fix, and were still in the February 1 update. h

whats VoLTE? is the LTE?
LTE/4G is working fine
EDIT!, just looked it up its Voice Over LTE, It seems to be a rare thing to have in Australia, only one telco has it and im not with them.
EDIT2: hey mate your from here too!, Telstra offers them to some few places, im with Optus
Telco devices in Australia are on the Feb patch, unbranded has March.
I debranded my phone with Aus fw, no root. This means Samsung Pay should work when it comes out here.
I like the firmware but not willing to root/cfw as yet... Kind of like being on a standard rom. Everything works as expected! Plus I'm sick of the setup process starting from scratch.. Does unbrandeding, root, new firmware loose all settings?

You don't get root, so warranty is not affected, but you start from scratch.

Yes, you loose all settings (just like new device), you start from scratch, Knox will be tripped if you root (warranty now voided), but you get the latest security patches and device updates,
Also de-branding and rooting it removes carrier bloatware and unlocks your device.
Got a new Nexus 5X yesterday and unlocked it before I got going. After installing all the security updates I installed the NAB app to find I also get the black screen. Was wondering if it was something to do with rooting etc but if you guys are having the same issue after the recent security updates would that be a more likely cause?
Hi,
I have a problem with the "Download updates manually" option in the "About device" menu.
When i click on it the Software update begins checking for updates and after 45 seconds it gives this error:
Unable to download update
Unable to update the software. A network or server error occurred. Try again later.
I tried in 3G/4G and wifi, same error message.
The phone is completely stock, it's NOT rooted (never has been), no ROM, no nothing.
Android version 6.0.1
Android security patch level August 1 2016
Apps update normally on 3G/4G or wifi, no problem there...
Can you help me? I really want to update via OTA (new security patch and the next Android 7...)
Are you a first time user in updating your phone? I mean is this is your first ota from your phone?
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
Hi if you can't do an OTA update you can always force one using Samsung Smart switch or Samsung Kies, once you have done that your OTA should work fine afterwords.
Just make sure to back up first in case it resets the phone, always better to be safe then sorry.
Hope that helps as I do it this way on my S7 Edge if I have any problems.
