It was a bargain at Google's online outlet. How can they have the balls to say the phone is a $699.00 retail phone? $300.00 with a new two year T-Mobile contract? This isn't going to help sales.
Here it is at i-wireless
Here it is at Pure Wireless for AT&T - no contract price of $638.00 plus shipping.
Ugh - I hope this isn't going to be a sign of what's to come.
Wow, never even thought of seeing it at those prices. I'm not sure what to make of this actually because they were talking about selling it at retail outlets, not on the internet.
This one is my favorite.

Those seem like 3rd party retailers, they always seem to bloat the prices so they make money off of it, if you go directly to an official store, they'll have it at the actual price. I heard t-mobile is going to start selling it officially.

I heard that too. I heard AT&T will, too. But I have serious doubts about that rumor. If they do, they'll insist on screwing it up. You can count on no more "fastboot oem unlock"

NOUN
1. sale to consumers: the selling of goods directly to customers, e.g. in stores
"She works in retail."
ADVERB
1. not wholesale: from an ordinary store or at the regular customer price and in small amounts rather than in bulk
"I bought it retail."
This is something that maybe has a different connotation elsewhere but retail around here refers to brick and mortar. Before there was an internet something not bought at retail or catalog sales from a retailer was either mail order or private sale. Nowdays you can add internet sales to that as a different venue to shop but it is not retail.
edit... Maybe its just because I'm old. Let me rephrase, its not retail to me or basically anyone I know. I'm going to have to ask one of my kids the next time they come over.
This is what I've been saying all along. It's not carriers they mentioned, they said third party retail, like amazon, best buy, frys electronics, etc. I mean what carriers are left? They all passed on the nexus, so the only places left are stores.

Did I say retail? I asked if this is a sign of things to come because NO ONE has yet announced the Nexus One is slated for their retail outlet. Also, the AT&T version is "temporarily unavailable" from the Google online store.
If sales are so damn bad, how did this happen?

And this happened because they are letting inventory drop before allowing a retailer to take over? A $99.00 AT&T Nexus at Walmart would be outstanding. With my luck, it will end up at Radio Shack for $429.00 with a new contract. My wife now wants one.

Well, we're waiting a few days for the new iphone to come out. If I peddle that on Ebay new and unopened and contract free, it ought to bring enough profit to pay for a good part of a new N1. I just hope it's available for a reasonable price somewhere when we're ready to buy.

They said retail in their announcement. You know, it turns out people want to get their hands on them, or whatever the language was. I dont feel like looking it up but I'm sure you recall that. That is why I wonder exactly what this is all about. This isnt going to move many more handsets than their own direct sales. Thats where I was going about it not making sense. It doesnt jive with what they said.
FYI, I Wireless is a cell phone provider based out of Iowa, and is affiliated with T-Mobile USA, although both are still separate companies. They have had the Nexus One since the end of March at select corporate locations. The reason they are priced that much is because they had to buy them 5 at a time from Google in order to offer them to customers. They did this because they wanted to offer their customers the Nexus One, and this was the only way they could at a discount.
With the change in Google policy, they are now available at every location in the company. But here is the thing, Google is still selling the phone to retailers and carriers, and they are charging an arm and a leg for each unit. $300 on contract is still a large discount from what the whole sale price of the phone is for most retailers... some retailers and carriers, ie T-Mobile, are getting a better deal, thus can offer a lower price. But they are also taking a bigger hit than others are (they can afford to because they have a larger customer base, thus if they only make $20 over a 2 year contract off a Nexus One owner, they can handle that because they have so many customers it still adds up to millions in the end).

Well, $529.00 retail/no contract is not an arm and a leg. The price should drop in half or more with a new 2 year contract - the plans have fat in the price to provide a hefty $300.00 or more sudsidy. AT&T just increased their early termination contract penalty to $325.00 on smart phones to make sure they recover their subsidy. Something is just not right with this picture.
Man, Google is dumb here.
Why does it have to be online-only or store-only?
What they should have done is send one or two phones to all T-Mobile stores, and maybe have an online kiosk too. Then people can check it out in person and BOOM, sold.
It doesn't have to be one or the other.

I Wireless doesn't charge $325, though. And like I already said, they were buying them 5 at a time at full retail price just to offer them to their customers. That is a $260 subsidy... but that in perspective, if you gave that discount on a BB Bold 9700, the phone would be about $50. In general, most phones are subsidized about $100 for a dumb phone and $200 for a smartphone. And net the carrier about $50-$100 in total profit over a 2 year contract. Verizon and AT&T make much more than the T-Mobile's, and especially I Wireless of the world.

Yeah, they could have done something different, that's for sure. Walmart? Best Buy? These guys can buy in enough volume to put them out there are a reasonable price.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...ps-to-1199-99-but-it-costs-best-buy-just-550/
So this makes me think that the price will be significantly lower than $1200 or $800. If not at Best Buy, someone else who can deal with less than 40% margins will sell this thing in the $6-700 range.
F*** Best Buy and their either 45% or even more obscene 118% markups.

They think they can place apple price point/margin(actually even more than apple!) without any track record to proove it... Its ridicules... They clearly want to gouge the first adopters, and a month later i can guarentee they will drop the price by 200$ (especially when ipad 2 is unveiled...)
Its a sad day that im considering and ipad 2 over xoom/other android 3.0 cause of PRICE.
$1,999 is a placeholder price.

That's crazy. When I worked at Best Buy a few years back, I found little (if any) markup on almost all laptops. Apparently they've decided that the Xoom is a different story.
I'd like to think that purchasing at a Verizon store will be a different story, but I'm sure there are all kinds of deals in place to keep prices uniform across the industry. It would probably be cheaper getting one shipped from Europe.
Oh well. I'm thinking the Galaxy 10.1 looks better than the Xoom anyway, so maybe I'll stick around to see how it turns out.

I hear ya there, SD card slot is a must in my mind for a tablet.
Love the design of the Tab 10.1 though, the backing looks so ergonomic.
If the xoom is locked down to modding like most other motorola stuff, the sd card won't be that big of a draw.
The markup is nuts, hence why I think you may be able to talk bestbuy into doing it out the door for 800, with the mobile service (that you can cancel).

well you have to take into consideration that BB is probably not going to make a killing on this product. If they were confident that they would sell a lot of Xooms, the price would be less. They would be able to make up for it in volume.
I agree about the mandatory Verizon data but from my understanding you have three days to cancel it and get your money back for that. I myself am going to keep the months worth of data...I've always been with AT&T and am curious about Verizon's service in my area.

You might be surprised what they will do if there is still profit to be made. You can negotiate on just about all big ticket items, especially at the end of the quarter when they want to increase revenue numbers. Never hurts to ask for something like 5 or 10 percent off. Worked for me on a digital camera I wanted and a stove. They took another $200 off my stove, even beat the internet prices I found.

And that employee cost that you see, is not always the price that Best Buy pays for an item. Tablets that require internet activation are in an entire different realm of pricing structures (especially since this is a Verizon tablet).

trust me, BB gives it's opinion to Verizon on what it wants to sell any given item for in their store and Verizon takes that opinion into account when pricing. BB doesn't have to carry any given device.... and Verizon or any other carrier has to work with them on price(as well as many other aspects) if Verizon wants that device in store. You can be sure Verizon's pricing would be different if they anticipated BB would sell tons more of them than they will currently.
All I am saying is this: if this tab was going to sell like the iPad, the price would be less. Verizon nor BB have the luxury of making their profit thru volume with this device.

I know Best buy gives its opinion, but at the end of the day, its out of my hand. There are certain things like I said, that are price controlled regardless of how much Best Buy buys the item from. I'm sure Verizon also wants best buy to sell tons of xooms. During this past holiday I saw more people sold on buying tablets than laptops, sure the initial price is high, relative to what you get, but I'm sure it will come down.
And for what its worth, even though people here are complaining about the high price, this device will be extremely popular.
That being said if I see anything more in best buys system I'll try and post/make note of it
My upgrade is due with O2 so rang them up today to see what kind of deal they can give me on the Galaxy Note in order to keep my business. I did the usual basic "I've seen better deals elsewhere, match it or I'm leaving" speach.
However, I was told Samsung don't allow them to alter their prices on this device at all. Both people I spoke to, in the upgrades & then in the retention departments didn't even have details of the note on their system to tell me what the prices even are, nevermind to see if they can beat them. It can only be purchased online with O2, not over the phone and not in store, therefore the online prices is all they can offer.
They said the note is the first device they've seen work like this. So I'm left with either paying top dollar or going with one of the obscure online retailers that I'd rather avoid.

You mean "obscure online retailers" like amazon.de?
Seriously, every carrier out there is putting up outrageous prices for the Note. The best way to deal with this is to ignore them and buy from hardware vendors. If more people did that, it would send a clear enough message.
By obscure sites I was suggesting more like affordablemobiles.co.uk who advertise really good deals, but you'll probably be waiting weeks for delivery, never get your 'free gift' and have a hell of a hard time sorting your 'cashback' out.
I'd much rather give my money to companies that are unlikely to mess you about like the major networks, however times are hard
i got mine from buymobilephones.net and was delivered the next day
Also buy mobiles.net and got it next day. I've used them twice now without a problem. The stupid thing is I left o2 because they couldn't match buy mobiles price on an o2 tarriff lol !!

Outright lie, it's been like that with the iPhone line since the first.
Do what I did and order from Amazon.de and go with GiffGaff.
I agree with the above, upgrades seem a thing of the past now, when due with three, i was offered a great upgrade deal except it was the same as if i was a new customer lol
i don t play there game anymore, i got mine from amazon.de, and now have a rolling contract so if they pee me off i only have to give 1 months notice
I too got mine through buymobilephones.net. No hassle from them at all.
£31 a month plus £80 for the phone I was happy with that (considering it was a week after release).
As some of you know i started a thread about possibly selling my OG for an infinity. I had someone who wanted to buy it off me for 250.
Well as i was reading through the infinity forums for product reviews i stumbled on a post about a guy that got best buy to honor a price match for random company called surefireshops.com for.... wait for it... 347.49! So i gave it a try and couldn't believe best buy actually did it!
So in the end , if you include the money i got from the guy who wanted my OG tablet, i got a brand new infinity with keyboard for a little over 260 dollars. If you are thinking about upgrading, DO IT! This tablet is amazing and for that price, seriously its a no brainer!

Well im writing to you on the TF101 forum. Which means, if im not mistaken, most of the users on here own a tf101. Im also posting of upgrading from a tf101 to the infinity. So im assuming that you will be selling your tf101 to help purchase the infinity. So technically everyone on here will pay roughly around the same amount if they use the same price match ans sell their OG transformer for a decent price.

I'm surprised Best Buy would do that, since Best Buy does not match the prices of Internet-only retailers. nor do they match the website prices of their local retail competitors' stores.
Best Buy Puerto Rico stores have their own store price guarantee.
All other stores are not supposed to match internet-only retailers.
Whatever manager in that particular store approved that, he/she will most likely be fired.
They will most certainly take a huge hit to their bottom line if that particular store is doing it excessively.
No wonder Best Buy is in dire straits.

Probably not. Its up to the discretion of each individual manager at a particular best buy. If they feel that they will benefit from giving that particular customer the discount in order to keep their business and also not allow a competitor to have the sale, they will most likely do it. Also i dont know what best you shop at, but the ones where i live always price match online retailers.

I was a retail manager for 10 years.
As far as hardware sales go, the profit margin is quite thin.
Selling the tablet at retail, there's a 5 to 6 % profit margin at best.
Retailers make their profit on extended warranties and accessories, not hardware sales.
If a consumer came in with such a price match, and is willing to purchase an extended warranty, i could possibly, although highly unlikely, see the sale going through.
True, the ultimate decision lies with the store manager, as long as the manager's decision is within Best Buy's price matching policy.
In this case, it is not.

Does Best Buy match the prices of Internet retailers?
No. Best Buy does not match the prices of Internet-only retailers or the website prices of our local retail competitors' stores.

Let me know if you find a clause in there where it states "matching Internet-only retailer's pricing is at a store manager's discretion".
Bottom line, the store manager in the Best Buy you frequent is not abiding by Best Buy's price matching policy.
Period.
Here's a scenario of discretionary decision-making by a Best Buy store manager, still within Best Buy's price matching policy:
Say you went to PC Richard and they had a one day sale on the tablet.
50 dollars less than your local Best Buy down the street.
The PC Richard store manager:
"Sorry sir, we are sold out. First come first serve. While quantities last.
Can i interest you in anything else? No? Ok, have a good day, sir"
So you walk down the street to your local Best Buy with your PC Richard Sunday ad, requesting a price match.
The store manager gets on the phone with one of the PC Richard's store managers.
After a brief conversation, he hangs up the phone and tells you:
"Sir, they are out of stock. I will not match this price."
You explain, with frustration and wild abandon to the manager:
"But, but, I shop here all the time, i'm a regular customer, please i don't have enough money", and blah, blah, blah.
Then the store manager, at his discretion, decides to price match PC Richard's price to hold on to you as a regular customer.
Although the store is not making its 5 to 6 % profit, it is still making a small profit, and retains you as a loyal customer, and the store manager is following the price matching policy.
Anyone who would give a product away at that price, not make a profit, without a thorough investigation of legitimacy and availability of the product at the online retailer, is a blithering idiot, and in the long run, will either be written up, suspended, demoted or lose their job when the store's P & L statement is reviewed by Best Buy Corporate.
I don't know what Best buy you shop at either, but I shop at Best Buy in Manhattan, and i'm a Premier Silver member.
If i brought in that particular price match, i would be laughed at, and rightfully so.
As far as i know, most businesses are in business to make money, not lose it.

Best Buy isn't making a ton of money. They are losing billions. Their 2Q profit dropped 90% and their stock tumbled to a 9 year low.
Best Buy lost $1.7 billion/$4.89 per share, for the period ending March 3.
Best Buy is closing 50 big box stores because they are losing a ton of money.

Do you know how to read?
My point is clear.
As i simply stated in my first reply, i'm surprised Best Buy would honor such a price match, since it goes against their policy, they are suffering a tremendous loss, and it is one of the reasons the company is having serious financial issues.
That is all. Nothing more to it.
Do you have difficulty understanding that?
If so, perhaps you should take a basic reading comprehension course.
And you stated yourself you're surprised Best Buy actually did it, albeit a shady online retailer:

I understand you want everyone to know about this, but do you want a prize, or perhaps everyone's praise and admiration because of this awesome "deal"?, and you take offense to any reply that doesn't praise or admire you for posting it?
Relax, school boy. I'll give you a cookie if you want.

Pierrekid, you might want to sit down. You got owned pretty hard. Rofl.
i have a problem with saving money and since i don't usually have $740 in spending money in a paycheck, i bought $100 in gift cards the other day to "save" for this phone. the writing on the cards says it can be used for more than just apps, games, music, and movies. it mentions the Google Wallet app, so that's what i tried to use to redeem them. the section for gift cards is just a place to make a note of the gift card code. i called customer service and was informed that they do not allow gift cards to be used for device purchases. it does list a link on the back for full regulations, but the rest makes reading that seem unneeded. the store will not take them back even though they were not redeemed, so i am disputing the charges. i just wanted others to know in case they had the same idea. someone at Google should really send out stickers that tell people up front that they are not good for devices.
common sense really... just because it doesn't say you can/can't buy devices doesn't mean you can. Knowing Google if you push hard enough they might refund you and disable the gift card.
It does suck... next time if you're going to spend that much money on something do a little research and it will help you in the long run.
I work in retail and I can tell you no store will ever take gift cards back. We make absolutely no money on those purchases. We are just the middle man. It's always recommended to check the full limitations of the cards before purchasing them because stores can't return them.

Wow that smacks, but it really sounds like a case of no research done, i mean really i don't think anyone uses gift cards except in small amounts and during holiday season for novelty gifts.
Also if you can't save money in your current account why did you not set up a direct debit to another account ?????

The stores make a commission on the sale of the cards, so they do make money. I manage a store, I see it on my bottom line at the end of each period. But we still don't take returns on them, but that is more the gift cards rule than hours because there is no way to deactivate a card.

i would get into further contact with google regarding your issue, if you speak to a regular rep, request to speak with a manager. Obviously they want your money in one for or another. If you apply yourself you may be able to strike some sort of conclusion to your problem
I remember someone trying to do this before. Like you realized, it's a no go. Hopefully Google can do something for you, but at the end of the day, you might be be stuck with the gift cards. Maybe you can take a hit, and sell the gift cards for $90?

If you sign a contract for something then get f**ked over because you didnt read it all.. whose fault is that? Yours of course.
You can't have everything dished out on a plate for you in life.

I know that Savings are important but if you get addicted to purchase something, it is not that easy to save money.....
Although Best of Luck with your savings.

That's like buying an iTunes gift card and trying to buy an iphone with it.. Just seems common sense
Anyways.. Your fault for assuming with such a large amount of money
not to play devils advocate but Ive never understood the thought process behind not accepting gift cards as cash.
If you pay $100 to get a google play gift card.. google gets that $100. $100 is $100 regardless of how its paid so why would google say Hey we will take your $100 in cash/credit card/paypal etc which has credit card processing fees associated with it and not take gift card balances which were paid the same? they already have the money so what gives? Maybe I myself dont understand how gift cards work with Google and iTunes. Is there more to the actual money exchange and where it ends up then most people know about?

Give him a break, he wants to buy this phone out right. Is it the smartest thing in the world? No, but what ever we live in a capitalist society.
He made it quote clear that he want to save just enough to buy this phone. People save a set amount of money with full intention of spending it on a purchase they can't afford upfront.
I think you should be able to use these cards, but you can't so nothing you can do about it?
