Samsung forcing fixed selling prices with networks - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

My upgrade is due with O2 so rang them up today to see what kind of deal they can give me on the Galaxy Note in order to keep my business. I did the usual basic "I've seen better deals elsewhere, match it or I'm leaving" speach.
However, I was told Samsung don't allow them to alter their prices on this device at all. Both people I spoke to, in the upgrades & then in the retention departments didn't even have details of the note on their system to tell me what the prices even are, nevermind to see if they can beat them. It can only be purchased online with O2, not over the phone and not in store, therefore the online prices is all they can offer.
They said the note is the first device they've seen work like this. So I'm left with either paying top dollar or going with one of the obscure online retailers that I'd rather avoid.

You mean "obscure online retailers" like amazon.de?
Seriously, every carrier out there is putting up outrageous prices for the Note. The best way to deal with this is to ignore them and buy from hardware vendors. If more people did that, it would send a clear enough message.

By obscure sites I was suggesting more like affordablemobiles.co.uk who advertise really good deals, but you'll probably be waiting weeks for delivery, never get your 'free gift' and have a hell of a hard time sorting your 'cashback' out.
I'd much rather give my money to companies that are unlikely to mess you about like the major networks, however times are hard

i got mine from buymobilephones.net and was delivered the next day

Also buy mobiles.net and got it next day. I've used them twice now without a problem. The stupid thing is I left o2 because they couldn't match buy mobiles price on an o2 tarriff lol !!

Outright lie, it's been like that with the iPhone line since the first.
Do what I did and order from Amazon.de and go with GiffGaff.

I agree with the above, upgrades seem a thing of the past now, when due with three, i was offered a great upgrade deal except it was the same as if i was a new customer lol
i don t play there game anymore, i got mine from amazon.de, and now have a rolling contract so if they pee me off i only have to give 1 months notice

I too got mine through buymobilephones.net. No hassle from them at all.
£31 a month plus £80 for the phone I was happy with that (considering it was a week after release).

I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!
People are selling this information..... people are so dumb!!!
If I thought i could sell stuff like that on ebay i wouldn't have to get out of bed every day and battle with exchange server 2003 and have to handle dumb ass secretaries saying "My files haved disappeared off my computer" all day.....
AARRRRRRHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
On a lighter note, i ordered a Exec from Coolsmartphone friday morning, after speaking to the sales rep on the phone to make sure they were in stock...... around 2 oclock, i rang then to confirm how my order was progressing to be told that they were waiting for more stock..... Bugger i said, i was promised stock was available this morning when i placed the order, sorry the sales guy said, we must have had a big order before we could process yours.
So i went to Mobile Fun.co.uk, ordered one from them, saved 50 quid on hte phone in the process and should receive it tomorrow.... how cool is that.
If i'd ordered it on thursday instead of spending the day researching it, i woould have it now...... never mind.
A big thumbs up to http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/o2/7839.htm
I like www.mobilefun.co.uk as well. The price of the Exec has reduced on their site in the last few days. The £35 per month option could be very good if you could convert to the Data 5 data only tariff after 6 months.

I would never pay that much tbh ..
Part of my amazement at the ebay market for execs is the fact its 250 cheaper just to get a 1year contract with o2 than it is to buy the fecking thing used ..

So yes, my bad. If you dont get a discount its fine - I guess. Wouldnt give you £500 for an exec tho. They're not worth half that ...

Rooted G1 for sale. 1 week old. Mint cond. $400

Well, as much as I love the handset itself I'm just not computer savvy enough to make Android do what I want it to. So I thought I'd offer it up here to try and save some money for listing fees before putting it on eBay. As of today I've had it for 1 week. Absolutely no scratches or damage and still has factory plastic cover on the screen. It's currently running modded RC30 v 1.31 with Carbon Glow theme. Comes with original box, instructions, 2 Gb micro SD card, and everything that came from the factory. My price is firm @ $400 USD SHIPPED. Will ship anywhere worldwide *except Africa*. I generally use USPS Priority Mail with insurance. I requested the SIM unlock code from T-Mo about 3 days ago so I expect that to show up any day now. Please reply via PM or email me at [email protected]. Thanks for looking.
*pics were taken several days ago prior to installing new theme*

You might want to lower your price. I bought one off CL almost new with a extra battery, case, box etc for $225. They seem to go for under $300 new.
I'm very well aware of what they're going for on craigslist. My ad is aimed more for those overseas that don't have such easy access to them.

I'm not trying to "cheat" anyone. There's nothing dishonest or misleading about my ad. I know for a fact that with my willingness to ship worldwide I will easily get my asking price if I choose to put it on ebay. I simply thought I'd offer it up here first. Clearly, that was a poor decision on my part.

Considering the tone of some replies..that's exactly what I was hoping for. I'll simply take this as a lesson learned about this community and take my business elsewhere. Then there will be no need for further editorialization about my character or intentions.
Thank you to those of you with cooler heads that chose not to be a **** about it.
Honestly I think the problem is that you are asking full market value for something that is opened and without warranty.
Think about it, why would you buy a stereo from some guy off the street even if he was a friend of a friend, if you could get it for the same price from the company which not only guarantee's it but offers 30 day return policy and a manufactures warranty?
Honestly I have no problem with you selling it here, it isn't against the rules. But I think asking 400 for the phone is steep especially considering this is the market where we know what it is worth and how to find them.
I don't see what I'm doing as being any different than what people are doing with the Iphone 3g. You can get a brand new one with contract for $200 from AT&T. But if you've ever tried to buy one outside of AT&T you'd see that no one's willing to let an immaculate one go for less than $400 or so generally. Add on an unlock and jailbreak and that can take it up much higher still. Is it "cheating" to want to capitalize on supply and demand circumstances? An item is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. If no one here thinks my phone is worth $400..that's fine with me. I know there are others that would gladly pay what I'm asking. Obviously, they just don't frequent this site.
I never said you were cheating I was explaining why I think they are pissed off.
Your iPhone vs G1 complaint is like Apples vs Oranges. They are in no way similar. The iPhone can not be bought unless it has a contract. Of course I would pay more for a non contracted phone, but the G1 is 400 with no contract. Wheter it is unlocked and jailbroken is irrelevant since the iPhone can't be software unlocked only jailbroken.
The only criticism I can give for me personally is that I thought you would have at least given xda members a discount. I mean what is 20-40 dollars gonna hurt?
I agree with you in that someone would pay 400 dollars... but I also believe that if you were really trying to help a developer get one you would be giving us a little discount from what you sell it on ebay. But that is just me.

Nexus One just arriving at third party outlets?

It was a bargain at Google's online outlet. How can they have the balls to say the phone is a $699.00 retail phone? $300.00 with a new two year T-Mobile contract? This isn't going to help sales.
Here it is at i-wireless
Here it is at Pure Wireless for AT&T - no contract price of $638.00 plus shipping.
Ugh - I hope this isn't going to be a sign of what's to come.
Wow, never even thought of seeing it at those prices. I'm not sure what to make of this actually because they were talking about selling it at retail outlets, not on the internet.

Those seem like 3rd party retailers, they always seem to bloat the prices so they make money off of it, if you go directly to an official store, they'll have it at the actual price. I heard t-mobile is going to start selling it officially.

NOUN
1. sale to consumers: the selling of goods directly to customers, e.g. in stores
"She works in retail."
ADVERB
1. not wholesale: from an ordinary store or at the regular customer price and in small amounts rather than in bulk
"I bought it retail."
This is something that maybe has a different connotation elsewhere but retail around here refers to brick and mortar. Before there was an internet something not bought at retail or catalog sales from a retailer was either mail order or private sale. Nowdays you can add internet sales to that as a different venue to shop but it is not retail.
edit... Maybe its just because I'm old. Let me rephrase, its not retail to me or basically anyone I know. I'm going to have to ask one of my kids the next time they come over.
This is what I've been saying all along. It's not carriers they mentioned, they said third party retail, like amazon, best buy, frys electronics, etc. I mean what carriers are left? They all passed on the nexus, so the only places left are stores.

Did I say retail? I asked if this is a sign of things to come because NO ONE has yet announced the Nexus One is slated for their retail outlet. Also, the AT&T version is "temporarily unavailable" from the Google online store.
If sales are so damn bad, how did this happen?

And this happened because they are letting inventory drop before allowing a retailer to take over? A $99.00 AT&T Nexus at Walmart would be outstanding. With my luck, it will end up at Radio Shack for $429.00 with a new contract. My wife now wants one.

Well, we're waiting a few days for the new iphone to come out. If I peddle that on Ebay new and unopened and contract free, it ought to bring enough profit to pay for a good part of a new N1. I just hope it's available for a reasonable price somewhere when we're ready to buy.

They said retail in their announcement. You know, it turns out people want to get their hands on them, or whatever the language was. I dont feel like looking it up but I'm sure you recall that. That is why I wonder exactly what this is all about. This isnt going to move many more handsets than their own direct sales. Thats where I was going about it not making sense. It doesnt jive with what they said.
FYI, I Wireless is a cell phone provider based out of Iowa, and is affiliated with T-Mobile USA, although both are still separate companies. They have had the Nexus One since the end of March at select corporate locations. The reason they are priced that much is because they had to buy them 5 at a time from Google in order to offer them to customers. They did this because they wanted to offer their customers the Nexus One, and this was the only way they could at a discount.
With the change in Google policy, they are now available at every location in the company. But here is the thing, Google is still selling the phone to retailers and carriers, and they are charging an arm and a leg for each unit. $300 on contract is still a large discount from what the whole sale price of the phone is for most retailers... some retailers and carriers, ie T-Mobile, are getting a better deal, thus can offer a lower price. But they are also taking a bigger hit than others are (they can afford to because they have a larger customer base, thus if they only make $20 over a 2 year contract off a Nexus One owner, they can handle that because they have so many customers it still adds up to millions in the end).

Well, $529.00 retail/no contract is not an arm and a leg. The price should drop in half or more with a new 2 year contract - the plans have fat in the price to provide a hefty $300.00 or more sudsidy. AT&T just increased their early termination contract penalty to $325.00 on smart phones to make sure they recover their subsidy. Something is just not right with this picture.
Man, Google is dumb here.
Why does it have to be online-only or store-only?
What they should have done is send one or two phones to all T-Mobile stores, and maybe have an online kiosk too. Then people can check it out in person and BOOM, sold.
It doesn't have to be one or the other.

I Wireless doesn't charge $325, though. And like I already said, they were buying them 5 at a time at full retail price just to offer them to their customers. That is a $260 subsidy... but that in perspective, if you gave that discount on a BB Bold 9700, the phone would be about $50. In general, most phones are subsidized about $100 for a dumb phone and $200 for a smartphone. And net the carrier about $50-$100 in total profit over a 2 year contract. Verizon and AT&T make much more than the T-Mobile's, and especially I Wireless of the world.

I just got back from carphone warehouse here in sheffield and they got stock in today, so hopefully you'll see them soon wherever you are.
I stopped by in the Vodafone store and they said that they will have stock tomorrow (thats where I'll be shopping as I have a vodafone signal booster) so it'd seem that 'right now' is when its supposed to be happening. Not that you'd know... No-one seems to want to make a fuss *sigh*.
If anyone gets their tab today or tomorrow (before me) can they confirm that the Tab has the full phone functionality in it ?
All the contracts seem to offer just a data line, which is ... fine... i guess... Since I'm just going to trade my Galaxy S sim card into it, but I need to know that I'll be able to get texts and use the phone. Otherwise I'm going to be a seriously pissed off panda bear.
So yeah... an open call to UK guys getting a Tab... Trade your smartphones SIM into it and check that it'll make/recieve calls and texts.
If they've disabled the phone aspect, I swear to god I'm going to embark on an urban terror campaign... Or just ***** on the internet. Either way. I want a Tab cuz its a phone not just a dataline. I want a phone replacement, not a small iPad.
[/rage]
Edit -
While I was in carphone warehouse, they said they are tossing in a 16gb card with their Tabs (not sure if its just them or general thing) and I know that they are offering some other cool free stuff which I saw on the guys screen, but he didn't go back over it so I don't know what it is. Anyways, good luck.
I think the phone capabilities is a UK only thing, so youre in luck unless theyve changed things :| then ill also be a pissed off panda bear
I guess at first itll be shipped to major cities, then sent out to smaller ones later in the week.
Reguarding the 16gb sd, did they say if that was if you purchased/pre ordered there and then? The people in Norwich didnt even know you could preorder it! Must have been living under a bloody rock for the past month.

Me too. Went into my local store as they never answer the phone. Not had any delivery yet today. They say their delivery is usually after 3 and sometimes just as they are closing. They took my number and said they will call me when they have their delivery. We'll see. Customer service on the phone is useless. They know nothing. And still no email saying it's on the way to the store.

I don't know about the SD card thing. The guy said they are doing it for all the Tabs, and implied that you only get whats in the box, so it would seem that its included with every unit, but I couldn't swear to it.
The phone thing is kinda weird. We've been told for ages that we'll have the capability, but no-one is selling it as a phone. Like NO-ONE. They're pushing the video calling thing, but thats a data thing, not an actual 'phone' thing. Without ANY phone stuff on the contract, I don't even know if a contract will give me a phone number or anything. I'm particularly pissed because I was assuming that it would drop on contracts similar to smartphone contracts, but everyone is pushing ~£500 with pointlessly expencive data-only contracts. I saw one that was £20 a month for 2 years and still £450 up front! REDICULOUS! I already have an unlimited data contract and wifi practically everywhere I am for any length of time except public transport. I just cannot understand what the hell they are doing with this pricing... Totally ignoring the only thing that makes the Tab better than the competition. RAAAAAAAGE
CPW have finally updated the Tab page:
http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/laptop-redirect/samsung-galaxy-tab?intcmp=hp-hp-hero-4-v1-1134
£530 with no contract or £530 with some crap Vodafone contract. Wooooo! [/sarcasm]
Anyway, reguarding the phone capabilities. Most/all screenshots of the Euro/UK tabs have either a Phone or Contacts shortcut on the homescreen. But it is strange that companies arent making a big deal about being able to make calls. :/

Also, why the hell is the carphone warehouse price for a vodafone tab HIGHER than the vodafone price ? I thought the point of going there was cuz they got stuff cheaper than straight from the network.
The vodafone prices are £499 + whatever contract. Its not much of a difference, but im seriously not happy that they want full list price on a contract. What the ****?
Has anyone seen ANY decent subsidies in the UK ? Isn't the german one going for like 100e + 17.50e a month ? See thats what I'm talking about.
Edit -
O2 want £600 btw. So thank god for small mercies.
Exactly. Full tab price and a £20 contract (?) shows how much they think about their plans. People in the Vodafone shop actually knew what a Tab was too!
If only we followed suit with the Germans. Their plans make sense. Where as ours are a bloody shamble.
Emailed CPW about when they think theyll actually have the tab and surprise surprise, no response.

That really sucks. Hope you get it sorted soon.
There's two things here that both combined I'm pissed about (more so as the day wears on). Firstly, I'm going to have to pay for the whole device up front. Second, I'm not going to have a spare service plan to kick around. If I were getting a decent subsidy OR a nice mins/txts/data bundle then I'd be cool.
Now I always knew that this wasn't going to be a cheap device, but I don't think anywhere else in the world is being hit as hard as us on the upfront price. Even the ****ing yanks who pay through the nose for every other mobile device are being told that $600 or £375 is full retail price. What the hell is that ?

Maybe/hopefully T-Mo & Voda will realise how high everywhere is charging compared to the rest of the world and knock it down. A lot.
If not, then T-Mo sim only deals are the best imho. 100 mins & texts and unlimited data for £10 or upgrade to 300 (i believe) for £15. I dont want to be tied to another overpriced contract tbh. :/
But, the Tab is £530 new, my Desire was priced at £500 brand new. I sure as hell would have paid the extra £30

CPW are a real shambles these days. I eventually got an email saying mine had been shipped to the store today and giving me a DHL tracking number. Great! Only problem is that the tracking number shows it was already delivered to Sheffield in November LAST YEAR! Phoned them AGAIN and it still hadn't been shipped yet. They promised me it was being shipped today for delivery to my London store tomorrow. Of course, I could have just gone to Oxford Street today and picked one up!
By the way, the CPW website shows definitely it is a phone as the 3 contracts include minutes. Also, seems CPW supply it with a 16gb card.
My galaxy S was about £500 too, but I sure as hell didn't pay that upfront. In fact I won't have paid the original price until next summer.
That's kinda my point.
The kinda contracts we get on regular smart phones are a nice way to spread the cost of a really expensive device over a much longer time frame. From my point of view there is simply no point in getting a tab with any kind of contract, which aggravates me.
Normally they are real happy to sign you onto a contract, but here there is genuinely no point. I mean £30 quid off when you sign up for 2 years ? For something I won't even use *shakes head*.
Up until now I was just going to spread the cost out and have a spare contract sim for family/friends/whatever. Now, I'm not getting the SIM nor spreading the cost.
I went for the £30 saving with their one month rolling 1gb data contract, including 1 month free. So I may cancel after a month or two and I will still have saved. Also, having bought through Quidco, I should be getting cashback as well. Looks like it could even be £40 as that's what's been tracked by Quidco.
i was all set for this since im due for an upgrade from my 3gs but to my horror no minutes on any contracts, the 24 month contract has 100 minutes but thats it. Not really enough, 300 would have been fine.
Think im gonna get a Archos again and look at other tablets next year. Will probably stick with the 3GS. Unless of course some more options are given, you would think that one of the networks would allow you to use it as a phone. But oh no!!
Yea - Got mine from Car Phone Warehouse - Last one in stock but we are definitely getting shafted over this...
I payed 299 with a 24 month contract as I needed a 3G card anyway for a dongle.
Vodafone want Minimum £424 up front...
I am an early adopter and have waited for this device for a couple months but I would advise that people wait for a further 2 weeks or so when the prices come down as the networks are clearly playing silly £$"$£$ with this.
All contracts car phone offered had no minutes I couldn't believe it...

Better and better! Got a new DHL number last night. Checking it this morning and it says its held at the depot because of an INCOMPLETE ADDRESS! And this was for collection from a CPW store. Couldn't even get their own address right!
Rushed home from work to Cambridge. Tried to go to PCWorld/Curry's but they weren't open. Called CPW. Their machine said they were open until 8. I walked to the mall and they were closed. It was only 5:30. Why does everything close at 5:30 here? Do businesses not like making money from people who work during the day? Lol. BTW I'm a "yank" working on an RAF base.

Best Buy Exchange's

Any have experience exchanging phones within theyre 15 day period before. I have always had bad luck with best buy and cell phones, ei.. screwing up my plan. I did an upgrade reversal once and it was a nightmare. Any way i want to go in on the 10th and exchange for a 32GB s4 and i asked the guy if its as straight forward as swap one for the other and pay the difference and he said ya but im still skepticle it will actually be that easy.
Anyone have any experience doing such a thing..

Nothing is ever easy at Best Buy which is why I haven't spent a cent there in over 2-years..
I'm actually surprised they haven't went out of business yet..
Sorry I can't answer your question but my guess is that it will end up being just as you suspect... A mess!
I usually buy phones there Cuz the 50$ gift card thing but after my experience just trying to purchase my s4 and two hours later a f'ed up plan ( deleted family text ) the saving are not worth it. After exchanging for the 32GB I'm done with BB

No issues with returning / exchanging at bb. Im also premier silver so i get 60days to exchange since after 14 contract can't be reversed

Will they really take a phone back if you had it that long?
Obviously you're limited if you buy it under contract but if you buy it retail ($749) it's yours and that return plan should be effective. We're also silver too and noticed 60 day returns are allowed!
As a Silver Rewards member too, I returned my launch SIII at day 59 just to get a fresh one, since the launch one had a slight issue with the volume buttons being loose - they would actually rattle when the phone vibrated! Since I'm not a complainer like so many others for the tiniest bit of lag they see on a 1.9GHz quad core PHONE (remember when desktops weren't even that powerful?), I didn't make a big deal out of it, but just went in before my 60 days ended last year and swapped it out.... I'm going to do the same thing this year for a 32GB S4 IF they aren't launching with some kind of prevention to the bootloader unlock!
People either love BBY or hate it, but if you aren't smart enough to have saved $50 at launch on the S4 like I did with the Phone Freedom deal they did again this year (saved $50 at launch on my SIII too), then you must enjoy spending more for the exact same thing! I can't complain about the 60 day return policy either compared to everyone else's at only a quarter of the time to know if this is the device you want to keep for the next 2 years on contract.....
Best buy is a nightmare to deal with. I have had nothing but bad experiences with best buy. I hope they go out of business soon.
I used phone freedom which is why I purchased from bb. Most likely going to exchange for the 32 as I keep looking at the available internal storage and it bothers me even though my 16gb N7000 sufficed for a year ... decisions

Good luck. Back in the day I was with my buddy at bestbuy, he was upgrading to the black berry curve when it first came out. Of course the rep was trying to sell the extra warrenty. They told us that there's no deductable and it covers everything including water damage. They actually had a small fish tank on the desk with a razor sticking out of the tanks gravel...there was a sign in the tank that read "does your insurance cover this?" They even told us we could smash the phone right in front of them and theyd give him a new phone. He bought the ins and a few months later he had a problem. Brought the phone in for inspection. They told us there was nothing they could do due to water damage. He was like I dont think so. They repeatedly told us they had no such policy...I than took out my bad ass black jack 2 and said "are you sure about that". Of course I took a picture of the "non exsisting" fish tank. He got a new phone and that was the last business either one of us had with Best Buy.

Not everyone is so broke that they want to put up with Best Buy just to save a few bucks.
I'll spend my cash elsewhere, thank you!
Purchase from Sams Club or Costco and you also get the extended return / exchange times..
I have no interest in setting foot in a best buy store and would still buy elsewhere if they were offering the phone for .99 cents..
That's my .02

Okay, moneybucks, no one said I was "so broke" I had to put up with BBY, I have had good experiences with them and enjoyed going back again this year.... last year I paid cash for the SIII at full retail (well, minus the $50 for Phone Freedom), off contract, so let's not go around speaking for other people's financial situations when the real story is that they haven't had any issues with BBY in the past....
It should be easy, I remember I switched out my hox+ for an s3 and it all went smooth. The only thing about best buy is the lines are freaking so long! I think it's a good idea to go switch your 16 for a 32 if you're under the 15 day period. i am too but i just don't want to wait. just got an invisible shield put on today and everything on my phone is so organized i don't want to redo everything. i went and got my s4 the other day and i told them i didn't want to spend too much money on accessories and the employee got my phone and typed into my messaging app that he was gonna do a price match with walmart and save me $20 bucks and that he couldn't say it out loud around other customers. that made my day lol
