So I'm super stoked I just got my v20 yesterday! I loaded it up w/ all my apps/settings/sms backups etc. So a big reason for holding out w/ my Note 4 was my IR blaster hence my jump to the v20. Anyways I use the blaster a lot for work and went to use it today.......nothing.
I tried the stock remote app my 3rd party app (anymote) both with no luck. So being in technology I figured......step one...reboot. Still no luck. I even tried a factory reset w/ no luck.
Contacting Sprint now. Anyone have similar issues with your IR blaster?
There's another thread about this issue. There is a setting somewhere you have to check and it'll work.

No problem. I don't remember where I saw it. I just remember reading and someone pointed to a setting somewhere and people said it started working.

I have the Sprint version and I have had no problems at all. Actually, I am thoroughly impressed by the native remote app that it came with. However, try the free version of Anymote. If it does not work with that app, there is a problem with the phone.
My or blaster (T-mobile) works well. Seems much stronger than my v10

So I found the thread with the fix thanks to "planetbeen". So my stock remote app will not work at all. I was able to get the 3rd party Smartremote to work after making the change posted by Jun Hong.
"Edit: enabling the User Alternate Ir Commands in the Advanced Settings seem to make it work"
I made the change in the Smartremote app and it now works. My stock remote app still does not work. Do you guys think my IR is broken or my stock application is messed up?

It is possible it either the hardware is broken or the stock app is "broken"***. Lemons do happen....but: Go to BestBuy's TV department and go test a bunch of TVs. Seriously. Before you go to pull an exchange, this is a necessary troubleshooting step. Then you can tell the techs with certitude something is up. Also better to test clearance models, since being older-there's a higher chance they'll even work presuming a non-lemon IR blaster***
***IR Blasters are like universal remotes....they're unofficial hard/firmware implementations by say LG (in this case) that may not be approved by your specific TV/cable-box/DVD-player/AVR OEM....and your specific OEM of your specific TV may for (reasons) just not work because.
My Spring LS997 mostly "works" on my home theater TV/cable-box/AVR....the basics do like channel up/down, mute, power, input/output swap, and menu access and entering channel numbers.....but some items like say the Samsung cable-box TV-Guide menu I cannot access AFAIK.

I think it's great that there are many choices for custom roms, and when I had my nook color I immediately went to cm7 for the obvious benefits. But with my nexus 7, I'm not so sure of the clear benefits of a custom rom.
Again, it's great they do this work and I know there are some features like being able to use custom kernels, over-clocking etc, but I think there are some good features that would really attract other users.
For ex, with miracast, a lot of people were anxious to have that on the nexus 7 but were disappointed that it was only the n4. I thought, cyanogen or some group will enable it in their rom, but so far nothing.
I'm really surpised though that no one seems to know exactly why it wasn't enabled. Like what in the hardware is preventing it? Some have said because the wifi chip is only 2.4 ghz but that doesn't seem confirmed. And if that's the case, then why not on the n10? Then with the n10 some say it's because of the high resolution, but I think res scaling is in the miracast spec. I guess I'm suprised some dev hasn't looked at the code and said, ah this is the reason it wasn't enabled. Like is there proprietary code with the encoder or wifi chip? Or is all of miracast in aosp?
Another example is the n4 not getting multi-user. This is obviously not a hardware limitation but a decision on google's part as tyically a tablet is shared but a phone is not. I don't own an n4, but sometimes people want to borrow your phone and it would be nice to be able to just let them play with your phone without any worry of someone seeing private data.
What I'm getting at is, if it's obvious that the n4 could have multi-user (btw has any custom rom enabled that for the n4?) but it doesn't because google decided as such and it's also obvious the N7 could have the sip dialer, is it the same case with miracast or is it actually a hardware issue?
The other thing I mentioned was the dialer. It's disabled on n7 because it's not a phone, but for a long time now the built-in dialer has had support for sip, and you see mentioning of voip all the time with regards to the N7. cm7 had the dialer enabled on the nook (which wasn't useful because of no mic) so why not on the n7? From what I've read no custom rom enables the dialer. Again, I know the functionality is there, all you need to do is change the dpi to a phone value. So it would sound as simple as taking out that check.
Yes there are lot's of voip alternatives but I want the built-in dialer because I heard it works with bluetooth headsets.
I tend to ramble, but basically getting miracast and sip dialer would be two nice features out of a custom rom, and I could some users of N4 wanting multiuser. I think it's pretty obvious that any n7 could have the sip dialer enabled and any n4 (or other phone) could have multi-user so wondering if it's the same for miracast.
This is the power of open source. The company decided we can't have feature X on device Y so why not enable it if the code is there?

Nexus 7 lacks the correct WiFi hardware for miracast, that's why it didn't come with it enabled and why no one is working on it. There is, however apps in the store for streaming over WiFi.

I'm curious, where did you read that? I've read speculation that it's because it's 2.4 ghz only but no where did I read that was confirmed. And then why not the N10?

Hmm, I googled it extensively, and found many speculating that it's because of 2.4 ghz and other speculating that the N10 didn't have miracast because of it's high resolution. But that's all it was, speculation. Nothing from an official at google as to why, or a rom/android dev who has actually taken a look at the code.
So I'd like to see a link or otherwise to me it's another comment that falls under the speculation column.
And my post wasn't just about miracast, but rather seemingly easy features (well sip and mutli-user for phones) that rom devs could enable but for some reason don't.
Hi guys
You doesn't need any of the patches or 3rd party apps.
You just need to follow these steps in order to use cast screen in custom roms:
1. Just enable wifi 'on'
2.Open cast & it shows all available devices:fingers-crossed:
I've managed to get the TV remote app to work on proper brand name TVs in my house (Samsung, Panasonic), but the TV in my room is a Sanyo. The app lists Sanyo as compatible, but none of the IR codes work on it
I was wondering if anyone knew of a different brand option that might work with the Sanyo TV. The HTC One TV remote has an IR learning option, where if you can't find your TV brand, you simply point the TV remote at the phone's IR sensor, long press the power button, and the app will learn the IR code. The GS4 app doesn't seem to have this option, and I can't find a way to get the remote app to work with my TV.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you updated the app? It contained some additional IR codes.
AFAIK, there should be an option to email the company, if you can describe it with the model number, etc, I'm sure they'll be able to update the app with some more IR codes.

the WatchOn app is a horrible bit of code.
In order to remove an accidentally added remote you have to clear all data in the program and start again.
On top of that they have only 1 or 2 codes for each TV brand, it is really sad how little work went into the program.
Also the GS4 has a IR transmitter, but not a receiver so we could not do a learning setup if we wanted to.
I am looking for a new program which can take advantage of the IR LED but so far have not come up with anything.
There is touchsquid which is not cheap but appears to be probably the most fully featured such program available. Or at least that I can find lol There is also this one which I just ran into yesterday buy haven't had time to peruse yet. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5yZW1vdGVmYWlyeSJd The main problem I have with the latter is that I couldn't find any information on whether they will let you run it for a bit to see how it works. As those who have tried to set up more complex systems with good automation know it can take a while to find the flaws and just to flat get everything working. I would want at least a 10 day trial to make a decision.
I mean is it so hard to implement learning function so that you can take any ir remote and copy its codes to phone!? I've had my Casio wrist watch for more than 14 years now and it has ir functionality and, more importantly, learning function so I can literary control anything that has an ir remote.

Care to explain then how to remove a single device, as I walked through every single menu and there is no way of doing it from within the Samsung supplied app that I could see.
And having been a user of android devices since inception I would state that even if it is possible it is far from intuitive.
My quick remote doesn't seem to synch with any device i own. Tried it on 3 different well known brand name tv's, even uverse didn't work. Any help appreciated.
I don't know how far you are from the device. My experience it's it does not have a good range. I did manage to get our working with 3 devicesbut I had to aim it over and over. I will only use it as a last resort our to show to friends. I don't see it replacing my harmony anytime soon.

Hi everyone
I have one question: does anyone know how to improve or add more devices to the quickremote app, besides those presets. I mean, for air conditioning, I can't add my device, a Comfee, that quickremote won't see it. Or to add more functions to the remote, apart changing channels, volume, source input.
Thanks for any reply.

If you have a remote that works with an IR Blaster the quick remote will learn it flawlessly,
BUT if you have a remote that works on Radio frequency (like some AC long range remotes) it OBVIOUSLY will not work.
Make sure your remote has an IR (InfraRed) LED.

lg didnt use the standard libs to make the IR work on our devices, hence other apps dont work. my friend uses some app from playstore which has a online library of almost EVERY DEVICE OUT THERE ! on his galaxy s4. so to piss him off i showed him 60 fps videos , but sadly that still means no much ir support for us

Not true, I believe IR Universal Remote from Wavespark works. LG released the SDK for the IR blaster, it's just very people know about and the ones that do don't want to have to develop a whole new app to work with it. The reason HTC and Samsung devices have widespread support is because they use the Android IR API. If someone could find a way to make that API work with the LG interface, we should be able to use any IR app we want.

Are you able to have the app learn new remote codes? For me it shows that the function is not available on the v20, but definitely viable since the stock app does it.

Have an issue with touchsquid gr pro remote app, touchsquid says that LG uses a proprietary IR driver sometimes different from
one device to another. and not enough market share for them to write for each device.
as per James Shannon at Touchsquid.
I wrote to that company when the g2 came out and they said the same crap. it's different blah blah blah. enough people clearly buy lg phones, you'd think they'd want to make an app...especially since I paid like 5 bucks for it. waste of money when I barely used it with my old gs4.
