Screen overlay is killing me - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

I use a Moto G4 plus and I really do not understand the app preferences but when I was about to install the Gallery app which I downloaded from this forum, it asked for detail about accessibility and when I gave allow, it shows me screen overlay detected and I tried to change app preferences and screwed all my preferences. It's been a very long day for me and I don't understand why this occurs. I don't know which app is doing this. Guys please help me !!

In my Moto G4 plus ,twilight app(used for night mode) causes screen oveelay. Whenever I get msg like screen overlay detected I simply pause this app running. Likewise in your mobile also some app is causing this. Try to find out that app.

Guys I don't use fb messenger or the twilight app, but the problem seems to be from the latest version of ES file explorer, it seems to have cleaning option with the latest update and thus it had been blocking all the priority, my draw over app permissions are still grayed out, but when I personally enter into the app's info (i button at top right corner) I was able to select the permissions and now it's working fine, but I do need an app for setting alarm and ringtone, besides ES file explorer. Any suggestions besides ES file explorer, I need to set alarm and ringtone.

Are u using any Internet speed meter type app which shows Internet speed in status bar, or do u have any app like blue light filter, these type of apps simply causes this issue. My suggestion is go to the section "draw over other apps" and manually disable the permission of all downloaded apps, then try to give permission 1 by 1, thay way u will get to know the what app is causing problem for you and helps you in future also.

No, I did not install any of the above mentioned apps. And I did that "draw over other apps" manually disabling permissions. Nothing worked out. But as I uninstalled ES file explorer, the permissions were done manually by going into the app's info page. It works fine now but, now I need a suitable file explorer for setting alarm tone and ringtone

I formatted my phone yesterday due to the sound problem from the latest update, not the Nougat update. I backed up everything on my Google account so my priorities weren't changed. But after upgrading every app yesterday, I downloaded the gallery app from this forum and wasn't able to access it, denying the permissions due to the screen overlay problem. And I manually disabled my priorities for each app upon which I gave the reset priorities which entirely denied every apps priorities except some and I had uninstall every app which had their priorities leaving only the system apps. Then I finally cancelled priorities for ES file explorer and still the apps permissions were kinda grayed out. But upon selecting the app's info option on the top right corner, I was able to select manually each of the app's permissions like storage, camera, contacts etc. So I uninstalled the app and it works fine now. I too don't understand how ES explorer was the problem. Plus the software update decreased the sound drastically to which I formatted the phone upon the customer care opinion, but still the problem persists.

Es file explorer 's ,'new file remainder' feature has this screen overlay problem..
By disabling in es settings my problem solved!

[SOLVED] Apps saying not installed, but they are.

In my market, it says i have all these apps not installed. But they are all installed. When i click on them it doesnt say install, it says open. The apps run fine n are in my drawer. Is there a way to fix this? Its just really annoying when my "Pro" keys arent being used. Like, titanium backup says im using the free version when i have the pro version installed, same for my launcher pro key.
Sent from the Darkside of the Atrix.
EDIT: can this be moved to the Q&A section, accidentally put in general. Thank you.
Same thing with me... google maps, youtube, and a few others are in the Not installed section, but when you select them it says installed, and you only have the option to open. I'm assuming they are still being checked for updates when I open Market... at least I hope they are. More annoying than anything else. Any thoughts?
Open up the "Manage Applications" and find Market. Clear the cache and reopen. Should show up now. Had to do that on mine.

First screenie is it saying i have the pro key installed. 2nd screenie is of TiBackup saying i dont. Taken in the same minute.

I have the same problem, and agree it is annoying.
It started happening when I did a titanium backup after unlocking. So I guess there must have been some problem syncronizing with market after.
I have solved the problem by uninstalling the applications that were listed as needing updates even though they were already updated. And when reinstalled, the notification went away. It's not a very elegant way of fixing the problem, I know.
If anyone else has a better solution, please advise.
I learned this method from another forum (can't remember where); it always works for me:
Exit all applications on the phone
Home > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All
Market: Clear Cache, Clear Data (OK)
Google Services Framework: Clear Cache, Clear Data (OK)
Reboot your phone
Open Market app and Accept the TOS
Market > Settings > Content filtering > Set level > Show all apps (OK)
Market > My Apps: no more missing apps, or false positives for updates
I've tested this many times with the new Market app on my AT&T phone in both stock GB and piCRUST. It always fixes the display of installed apps within the Market app itself. But the list of apps showing on the Market web site under My Account (https://market.android.com/account) may not be immediately updated with the results. Sometimes the Market web site will be updated later rather than sooner, or only partially rather than completely. But this local fix will usually affect the web listing to at least some degree.
(Space reserved for future rant on market web site lameness...)
Did it, now i get a server error everytime i open the market. Just reinstall apk of new market?
EDIT: just used task killer to kill it all then retried n it worked. All my apps are saying installed. Thanks so much.

I see that error occasionally after using this fix, but I also sometimes see it after re-flashing the phone, and after other seemingly unrelated actions. It usually goes away for me if I just turn on wireless first before opening the Market app (no need to reinstall it). I think it's related to some error in the app or settings initialization, and not specific to this clean-up routine or anything else.
And yes, I've found that using a task killer also seems to help. Maybe indicative of another app blocking the Market from opening correctly at first run? I don't know, but once it goes away it doesn't seem to come back.
Thanks, this worked flawlessly.
Could I suggest you add "Solved" to the title of this thread so others that might have the same issue could use this?

Got it. Ive had to re do this fix after my phone shuts off, so its not permanent on my device. It might be for you, either way, it fixes it for awhile.

One other thing that will confuse the Market about what's kosher: using a non-standard LCD density.
In my case I had hard-coded build.prop to set ro.sf.lcd_density=300 and ever since I did that the Market website kept telling me that most of the apps I'd previously installed were not compatible with my Atrix 4G(!) My workaround was to revert to the default ro.sf.lcd_density=240 and then use the "LCDDensity" app to temporarily set it to 300. Whenever I need to go to the Market for something I just reboot the phone first and it reverts back to the default setting in build.prop.
If you've got it the other way around (e.g. build.prop is using a non-default setting, and you're using LCDDensity to override this back to the default), then that might explain why you're seeing this Market mischief return on reboot.
Even if you're not using LCDDensity (or you're using something else like "LCD Density Changer" which can make these changes permanent), you might want to check your current LCD density. Ditto for other property settings that might not be using their defaults.
Here's a list of all the things that the Market looks for to determine if a particular phone is compatible with an app:

Please help: Chrome stopped working

Hi guys... stupid me... I was playing around with Titaniuum Backup and read about the recommended job to integrate update into the ROM in order to free up space. Good idea, i thought.
So, I pressed it and was toasted successfully. Tried to start chrome again and was told that an error occurred and I have to delete chrome first. Well. I wondered as it is a system app. Never mind. Titanium backup pro solves the problem I thought. Deleted Chrome, restarted and installed it.
If now I want to start Chrome, it closes itself and gives a toast that "Chrome stopped working". I can press report or ok. The most interesting part is, that this toast appears 2 times. So, I guess that the process starts 2 times and produces a conflict.
Any idea?

Try clearing data and defaults of Chrome in "system settings - apps" and then long pressing Chrome and turning it to a system app in TB.

Hello, "undo sys integration" lets me know that there is nothing to undo. So, I can not execute this process.
@yuzgen: Chrome is still a system app and so, I can not make it one ( as it is already)

But you put "Deleted Chrome, restarted and installed it." in your first post. So now it must be a user app?

1. Make sure chrome is closed.
2. Go to the app settings and remove all data from chrome.
3. Go into /data/data/ (with a root explorer) and remove any directory with chrome (probably: com.android.chrome),
4. Then remove chrome from your device.
5. Restart the device after that reinstall chrome from the play store.

Stop ongoing downloads?

When i am downloading, say a ROM, i cannot stop the download.
On my last phone, the Xperia Z2 there was a download manager app where you could cancel downloads.
But on this one its just plain impossible...
Anybody have a solution?
Have you tried holding your finger on the download for a couple of seconds to see if a menu pops up. If so, you might be able to cancel it from there.
it seems the default download manager doesnt have gui, i could not stop a download too and could not find the service to kill.
just dont use the default browser to download, use opera or uc browser as they have their own download managers, or install a dedicated DM, there are good free ones that can resume and all sorts, but they use up data by having ads.
Delete the downloading file from My File. Hold the file and click on the delete button right away when you see it
Doesn't work.

I found a solution a while ago, but it takes some steps and can get annoying if you download often. But I haven't found any other way (except for third party downloaders, of course):
- Tap and hold the download progress notification
- Then the notification settings screen for the Download Manager app comes up. Tap on the "i" on the top right
- Choose storage and then clear the app's data. Then the download is killed completely. I haven't experienced any disadvantages from clearing this app's data.
Don't forget to delete the file manually after that in /sdcard/download/ if it's big because the part that has been downloaded until killing will still take up space.
This is a MAJOR annoyance of mine... Though on the Z2 on MM I had the same. Was it phased out on MM? sure it was on LP.

Restarting the phone kills the download. A pita but it works
U have to go to setting app and force close the downloads and wipe cache it's a major downside of the Samsung browser and it's sad they've never fixed it

Screen overlay???

So I got a replacement phone today. I can't use most of my downloaded apps. It says I have to turn off screen overlay.
It keeps telling me to change my settings. Ugh. I've Googled advice and I keep reading things about disabling lux for example but I don't have that app..
I've also read if I go into my app manager and click on more it should allow me to "draw over" and this isn't an option on my phone..

It's a message from latest security policy from Google. It was introduced in latest update.
When you open an app and this app asks for any kind of permission like access contact, storage or location, you have to make sure that there is no app running on top of everything. This is for your security because this app can answer for you without your permission.
Example: if you have a Messenger chat head open on top of the screen, Google will not let you answer if other application asks for permission. In this case just close the chat head.

Screen overlay detected

I have tried Googling for a solution but nothing seems to work. Every time I try to allow permissions for an application, I get the dreaded "Screen overlay detected" message. I tried resetting all permissions and such, but the problem persists. It is truly annoying and I am on the verge of breaking my stupid phone, so can anyone tell me how to fix it please?
Thank you guys.
Only way I've found around it is to go to settings, apps, app manager, then in the upper right corner select apps that can appear on top. In that screen, choose the drop-down with the apps with permission granted, then ungrant each one individually. After going back and getting permission for the new app, you can go back and reactivate screen overlay for each app if you want.

Facebook Messenger usually causes this (chat heads), just force stop it and do what you want. The app "Screen Equalizer" causes it too if you happen to use it.
I have tried both these things but the error just kept coming back. I ended up reinstalling the ROM and now it works fine.

It is a security policy from Google. You can't grant permission if another app is open on top of current app. Like chat bubbles notifications in Facebook Messenger.
The reason is that the app can grant permission for you without your consent. You have to identify what is open on top of everything and close it before granting permission.

Additionally the edge effect on the blackberry PRIV trips this error message. Maybe the edge on Samsung does similar.
For some reason it only happens on Renovate Edge ROM for me. I reinstalled Renovate last night and got the error, and I fixed it by disabling (unchecking) all the apps that can draw over others and rebooting my device. Before the reboot, it's as though nothing changed, so make sure to reboot if you get that error.
