Broken screen, need advise about MHL 2.0 HDTV Adapter - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short, I went to the beach yesterday, put my phone into airplane mode, and then fell over on the rocks and cracked my screen.
So now I have a locked phone, in airplane mode, which turns on and vibrates to indicate power (with power LED), but I cant use the screen. I wouldn't be too upset, but I took a lot of pictures on the beach and i'd like to keep them.
So I was wracking my brains trying to think how I could do an adb backup or something (cant, unauthorized), then I thought, "Wait, does this thing have HDMI out?!!?" Turns out yes. So, quick question to anyone who owns or knows about the MHL adaptor, can I just buy the MHL adapter (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Galaxy-S4-HDTV-Adapter-White/dp/B00BTCPQ5C) and plug it into a TV, and use a USB mouse to unlock then copy my photos?
Any help really, really appreciated.
P.S. Anyone got a broken Note 3 they want to sell? All I want is the screen, don't care if its cracked and doesn't accept touch, i just need to see my screen. Moral of the story kids, don't put your phone in airplane mode, your photos won't backup

No, the screen is totally dead. But I know the phone still works because it vibrates when i turn it on, and my PC recognizes it when i plug it in, and the charging LED lights up. It's just the screen that is dead.

Oops. So basically, You can now try only mirroring.. Only option.. I have had this problem with one of my phones earlier.. I somehow managed to grant usb debugging.. Rest, the PC, mouse and keyboard did the job.

Well, I bought that adaptor. It doesn't fit in my Note 3, it seams my port is too short? After some Googling around that subject, i've discovered that there are 5-pin and 11pin variants, and I have a 5pin. I can buy another £5 adaptor for 5-to-11pin, but i'm not going to, because i also discovered in my Googling that mirroring only works on a stock ROM. I apologize for not mentioning that i run custom in my original post, I didn't even think about it, since this is XDA I just assumed everyone would know.
Can anyone suggest ANYTHING I could try? The pictures mean a lot to me, i never turn on Airplane mode (so that my pictures are always instantly backed up), but it just so happens that on that day, I did

Won' t turn on! Tried all suggestions

Yes I have read all posts regarding "Screen Of Death" issue and i have tried all the suggestions. But still, my 10.1 won' t turn on. I have left it drain the bat for 2 days now.
Even if i plug it to the charger there is no sign of battery charging. Hence just blank black screen. any other idea before I have to go to the Service Center. Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.....
Connect the USB to a Windows computer and press Power + Volume Up for 30seconds. Do you hear a Windows "new hardware found" sound?
Thanks... Tried... Still fail. My PC only signaling found new hardware but fail the installation process. I guess because the tab is still not ON. Help....
It seems my PC recognizes the tab but can't find the driver. I can also feel "warm" near the power button area when i connect it to any electricity but still no TURN ON or BATTERY CHARGING INDICATION.
Have you tried to charge it with the wall charger for at least 2hrs and then unplug it and hold powerbutton 10 sec?

Actually, that is what I was expecting as result.
The Power + Volume Up enables the nvflash APX mode, the screen remains totally black. I simply wanted to know if the tablet works and the culprit is just the screen. From what you say, we get the expected results... Windows detects the new hardware so the tablet works.
Now try the opposite: Power + Volume Down, hold it for 30seconds.
If you don't see nothing on the screen, it is probably a screen contact that got lose... you need to service it by Samsung.
yes done that. Still not ON. When I plug it I can feel it is working since I can feel "the warm" but screen still is blank
Then you already know what to do.
No biggie, Samsung will send you a replacement for sure.

yes. In fact now the APX is still working trying to find " a new hardware ". Should I cancel it and try the POWER+VOL DOWN now?
Yes, go ahead.
DONE the Power + Volume Down still not ON. BTW the APX Could not find any driver? Is it normal. Before this happens in fact i can transfer any file with my PC through MTP. Thanks again for your help. Hopefully you still know any other solution.... Keep waiting
The APX driver is included into nvflash package, it does not matter if you install it or not at this point. The advantage of this test is that the APX mode keeps the screen off in purpose, while allowing you to flash the tablet through a CMD window (only if you have an unlocked bootloader). We used this trick to determine if the core of your tablet works... we wanted to isolate the problem related to your screen.
I recommend you to contact Samsung and have the tablet serviced. Some screens lose a contact point when you drop the tablet by accident or if a soldering point is weak... The heat generated inside is enough sometimes to sever a lose circuit connection. Either ways, you do NOT want to keep this tablet.
I hope you did not flashed the tablet with some custom ROM, or else Samsung might void your warranty.
OK. Then the only thing i can do is go to SC.......Hmmmmm I am still using stock rom but unfortunately i did root the tab already. Is it bad judgement??? Thanks anyway.
I really hope it is only the screen connection lose issue. But just for curiousity. If only the screen keeps OFF, does it mean I actually can still check that my gtalk on the tab still connects? How this thing works??? since i just check with my phone my gtalk on tab is off.
You ordered the tablet online from Samsung or you bought it from a retailer like Best Buy?
I bought it from retailer. BTW is there any kind of USB JIG for the tab similar to SGSII? I just thought maybe this can help solve the screen of death issue. Ha ha ha ....
Perfect, just go see the store and explain to them nicely the issue. I'm sure they will exchange it for you.
Forget about the JIG or anything else, your screen is gone wacko... What you do now is try to force a blind guy drive a car... Just go exchange the tablet.
Ok I' ll do that. Thanks for your info and help. Hopefully problem will be solved soon.
I had the same issue but I couldn't return to the store so I went through support. They don't have parts yet so they just send you a different unit. In total it took 2.5 weeks for me and I ended up with an unlocked unit

Damn, it took 2.5 weeks to get a new unit?
The good news is, it's recoverable. The bad news is, it's going to take a long time.
Keep it off the charger.
Hold down the power button to get it cycling through APX mode while plugged into your PC (can hear the USB connection sound in Windows).
Tape the power switch down, verify it's still going into APX mode after taped, then unplug it.
Leave the tablet alone for a few days. Think about puppies, chocolate, bouncing breasts, whatever makes you happy, and forget about the Tab.
Come back, plug it back into the PC, see if you still hear it connect. If so, walk away again, come back the next day.
When it finally stops going into APX mode, plug it into a wall charger and leave it alone for about an hour, it should start charging normally, and once it's got charge showing, it'll power up normally.
Rule of thumb is it'll take about a full day for every 10% of charge that was on the battery when it went down, if you keep the power button taped down.

[Q] (Edited) Okay, so its not in APX Mode? Would like help recovering data

Hello, first let me apologize for making another thread on a possibly bricked tablet. Also I apologize if I didn't post this in the right place, being new and all. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to look at this.
My situation:
My tablet has been working fine until last night; it's been dropped once before from a substantial height (over 5 feet), and luckily only my screen cracked, which I replaced. This time however it fell about 2-3 feet from my bed, most likely landed on the power button side, and now it won't turn on.
The Power Light comes on
It vibrates
The backlight does NOT come on. No words. No logos. Nothing.
I tried plugging it into my computer but nothing happens. It's not rooted (as far as I know), and I don't think I had debugging on. It had Android 3.2.1 on it I believe; my computer is Win 7 64.
Edit: I was able to get another computer to recognize it, a Win 7 and 8. They both have it pop up as "Acer ICONIA TAB A500" and as a portable media device, but when I open it it says its Empty... no folders, nothing.
At this point I would just like to know if there is anyway to get the personal data off of it, there are a few documents that I had not backed up yet that I would really like, that were not on my external SD card. If its possible to get it working again that would be great too, but I've come to terms with the fact it might never. (I'm half tempted to strip it to the screen again and put it back, just to see if that might make it work...)
Edit 2 (sorry if anything sounds confusing): I don't know if this is helpful or not, but the tablet "sounds" like it goes to my lock screen (powers up, vibrates, wait a minute or two and then really softly vibrates again), although I still can't see anything. The power light then goes out, but if I put my ear to the open back I can "hear" it working. If I leave it alone and plugged in, the power light will flash from orange to white every couple of minutes (it will also do this unplugged). Also if I press the power button it will turn white, acting like its sleeping and I've woken it (this occurs whether plugged in or not), but I still have a black screen. Does this mean it might not be dead?
Can the screen be broken with no visible cracks or damage inside?
Another note, when I replaced my cracked screen when it fell those 5 feet about a year ago, I never changed the green piece (which I am assuming is the touch screen controller?) with the new one that came with the new screen+digitizer. Could that be acting up now?
I'll try and see if I can get my hands on a micro HDMI to test and see if it will show up on my TV/Computer. It should just be plug and go right? No setting that needs to be turned on?
Any help is greatly appreciated, and thank you for your time.

NP won't wake from sleep

Hi all, I've found that when I leave my Player on sleep for a while, I am unable to wake it back up. I've tried pressing the hardware button, the remote buttons, etc. The led is on, but there's no output or sound response from my TV. I have to unplug the NP and plug it back in. Probably a user error, but what's the process to wake the system?
Thanks in advance!

I am experiencing something similar, it started with restarts, then it would not boot without the button on the bottom and now it says no signal. Tried connecting it to the pc, pc installed drivers, and if you unplug a cable it says cable unplugged.

Bumping as I still haven't found a solution.
yep, mine does the same thing, every day i have to reboot it as the screen is black and the device is unresponsive
MIne I have to unplug the HDMI and plug it back in then magically there is a signal. I tried setting never go to sleep and that did not hep. Did anyone upgrade to 5.1.1? does that fix anything?
Bump. Got mine a few days ago and the same thing happens.
It's still on and running. It's still a little warm under the button. But no matter what I do with the remote or button or TV, nothing happens. The only way to get it back up is to unplug/plug the hdmi or power cable.
I've got the same problem, but I've unplugged everything and still nothing, tried different TVs, Different HDMi leads still nothing. Going to contact Ausu or go back to where I purchased it tomorrow. was loving catching up with Game of Throne haha

Quoting you so you get a notification
Did you find a solution? Was it your TV, HDMI cable, or the unit itself?

Still no solution. Tried 3 different ROMs and it's the same thing with each one. Could it be a firmware problem? I mean I shouldn't have to reboot it every time it goes to sleep. The hardware button on the bottom has no effect. I'm slowly giving up.

Hey, sorry for the delay, been busy.
But yeah I got my new nexus. Rang Asus with some struggle as the serial on the product wasn't matching up on the system. Useful haha
Then they said it would take 29 days to get a fix or replacement.... I then said I'll take it back to where I got it which in my case was Argos.
Took it back told them the problem, girl looked at me completely confused. Think I lost her at bootloader haha. But I might as well tell them how to explain to do a factory reset which I couldn't do anyway. Then got my replacement. Which I'm leaving in the box as I want to be a geeky guy and do a unboxing video this time haha.
I found if you turn the TV on and off again it will work.. no need to get up and pull the HDMI cable
I noticed this issue didn't happen with 5.0 but happened with 5.1.1 so I'm hoping a new update will fix it.
Random question but on 5.1.1 how do we get sideloader? As I can't find it on the store
Doesn't matter was being an idiot.

A sideloader? If you are asking how to sideload, you boot into the recovery and then choose install from sideload, then use the "adb sideload" command.

That has absolutely nothing to do with this thread
LOL
Also, you sideload using ADB
Turn on USB debugging, install the ADB driver on your PC, then use the adb command "adb install apkname.apk"
No need for root or recovery.

This doesn't work on my setup. But pulling the HDMI cable works.
This problem appeared on my Nexus player about a month ago, it was working perfectly until that time.
It looks like a problem with the HDMI CEC. Even if I put my NP in "Never sleep mode" as soon as I turn off the TV it will not then wake when I turn the TV back on.
Well, in my case at least, that is not accurate. When I turn the TV on, nothing appears on the screen nor is there any audio, but the NP is still responding to commands and working. I can blindly start a YouTube video from the highlights section while the TV is still "blanked" and when I toggle the HDMI cable connection the I can see that the NP was functioning "correctly" other than it wasn't outputting anything to the HDMI port.
I would say that the "fault" is just likely to be on the TV not implementing HDMI CEC correctly, but everything WAS working correctly until recently and the only changes are on the Nexus Player side of the equation.

Problem solved?
Before you take the device back to the store, I believe the problem is the TV; even those of you who tried multiple ones. I did the same thing; tried a different TV. However, in my case, it works. When I hooked mine to a newer TV, the device wakes up fine. I read in other forums (searched "HDMI won't wake up device") and to my surprise, there are other forum where people complained about the same with other devices. Apparently, something related to the HDMI port (maybe the version of HDMI?).

Can I diagnose a phone with smashed screen?

A friend of mine lost his S4 I337m, but found it again after it had been run over by a car. I'm trying to determine if it's worth trying to replace the LCD or if there's other damage.
The LCD is just tiny shards of glass (I'm betting it was face down when run over) but while he didn't find the back cover, the mid frame is in good condition and after removing it, the boards don't have any obvious damage.
If I try to turn it on, it vibrates and the LED pulses blue. Then a bit later it does a longer vibraton and the LED flashes blue. It seems like it's powered up.
If I try to connect to Kies, it just says "connecting" forever and the LED turns red. Maybe it's prompting me to unlock the phone? There's no message from Kies to that effect though.
As I've never used this model of phone before, I have no idea what the normal behavior is. Are there any tools I can use via USB to check the "health" of the phone?
FYI, I'm pretty familiar with flashing Android phones (mainly Nexus devices) and have replaced the screen on a Nexus 5, so I'm not afraid of a challenge. I'm guessing this phone is stock, so probably have a locked bootloader and USB debugging disabled, so I'm not sure if I can expect much. Obviously without a screen I can't do much. Also, he pulled the SIM and SD card, not sure if that matters.
I'm going to try connecting using ODIN next.
I actually was in the same situation as you are about an hour ago. I was able to unlock my phone by using a USB OTG adapter to connect my keyboard to enter in the pin and unlock it. After that I was able to access my files, so i just kept taking screenshots while i navigated my phone using my keyboard - installed SideSync, accepted the permissions, and finally - was able to mirror my phone to my computer.
If your phone vibrates, and the LED works, then try testing the button three buttons when you have the phone on. the red LED light is only on when the phone is either powered off and charging, or the phone is powered on with the screen off and charging, so if tapping the power button changes between seeing the red LED and not (and a small vibration when tapping the back or window button) then that should mean it's just the lcd+digitizer
Anyway, feel free to ask me about any behavior about a working s4 with a broken screen, one more week until my replacement comes in the mail

Is my Note 4 dead?

Hello dear community,
I'm posting there because I have some doubts about my phone and i'd like some answers from you.
1 month ago, I was charging my phone. When it reached 100% battery, It was fine but the problem is when I was trying to press "power" to turn it on but It didn't want to. So, I removed the battery because I couldn't even turn it off. When I tried to restart it again, it didn't want to. No reaction to the "power" button.
I followed EVERY tips on Google but none worked. I also tried to change my battery but nothing. I tried also to connect it to my computer, it was detected but my phone didn't turn on.
So, I guess my phone is dead unless if there is a solution to make it working? Also before that, my phone was becoming very laggy and when it had a small lag, it was turning off and was rebooting.
Thank you in advance for your answers.

I have mustered some conclusions about your phone based on what you typed:
1st claim: The power button no longer works anymore
•Reason: "... when I was trying to press "power" to turn it on... it didn't want to... When I tried to restart it again, it didn't want to. No reaction to the "power" button."
—Seems like you're gonna have to find another Note 4 and replace its motherboard with the Note 4 whose power button doesn't work anymore after 5 years.
But before spending, I would like you to try this method from a Youtube comment:
"... you'll just have to keep the charger [cable connected] on [your phone] while you take off the battery, and put it back after; then, remove the charger quickly..."
—————
2nd claim: The screen no longer works
•Reason: "I tried also to connect it to my computer, it was detected but my phone didn't turn on."
—If the phone is charged, seeing nothing but blackness, but you still see an emitting LED light on the top-left corner, that's a sign that it still works, just not the screen. So I would suggest that you buy a new screen and replace it with your old one. If you think you can't, then go to a phone repair shop and let others do the repairing.
—————
3rd claim: The motherboard is dead
•Reason: "... before that, my phone was becoming very laggy and when it had a small lag, it was turning off and was rebooting."
—The motherboard might be dead if these are happening, but I don't think this is the right reason unless the first two conclusions are proven to be true. If the first two conclusions are proven to be false, then the motherboard is dead, and you may either buy another Note 4 motherboard or get a new phone.

Thank you for your answer.
To answer you clearly about all the points you clarified, there is no led light appearing when putting it on charge and I also tried the "Youtube comment" but nothing.
So I think, the motherboard is dead as you mentioned. I just don't understand how it died after a charge but as I saw on Google, it's a general problem on Galaxy Note 4, so I think i'm not surprised at all. It's been since 2015 I had it.
Thank you for your time and to have solved my doubts about the death about my phone.

Is this a serious thing ? (fridge)
I did the oven trick on my n910t. I left my phone stuck in the grill of my truck when I changed the brakes. I took it for a test drive and ended up running over the phone. Me being a noob at the time didn't know the AT&T Note 4 would not unlock Bootloader for custom roms or custom recoveries. I purchased the AT&T Note and was sorely disappointed there after. Flash 2019 I still have the motherboard for my note that I ran over. I can only get in to go into download mode and only when it was plugged in. I flash custom ROM or custom recovery and it would say would pass but it would just boot loop and boot loop. So I read somewhere where you can put it in the oven for around 5 to 6 minutes at about 200° and that it would settle any of the cracked solder that be around the emmc or anywhere else on the board. So I tried it. I stuck it in two different times at five minutes a piece, pull the board out and let it set for a day. I installed the board just a little while ago and she fired right up. It's amazing
I've recently replaced the motherboard on my N910F with a used one bought from AliExpress. As it's used I've no idea how long it will last but for £30 was worth a try.
It was pretty straightforward replacing the motherboard using one of the tear down guides on YouTube.
