Just got mine too. Look at the update size!
I'm also upgrading, guess if they have resolved the battery drain issue
Anyone root it yet? Does the usual method per senor Heisenberg's directions work?
Post what's different guys.
7.1.1. Got a support tab in settings. Nothing but help guides. No support staff. New 'Moves' sub setting, which is where Gesture settings now live basically. Still looking for more...
Android Pay now pre-installed.
New Camera app? There's the grid options now.
New 'Restart' option when long pressing power button.
Keyboard has Gif support under emoji menu.
Not seeing anything more right now. Can't be bothered to check stock launcher as I use Apex. Sure there may be circular icons etc but I just don't care!
Seems like the battery Life improved, anyone?
I don't have the battery drain issue like 7.0

There are dozens of articles out there on what's new in 7.1.
I totally hate the support tab. It's completely useless for me, any other XDA member or even any non member with half a brain. In fact the whole settings page has gotten nasty post Marshmallow.
Otherwise things seem to be improving slightly with almost every iteration.
NRT by Wugfresh works perfect fyi...

it too ealy to say about battery life
has any one been able to get the new nav bar working?
just installed the update
question
1. not the pixel launcher at default?
2. no Google Assistant
3. the navigation bar still is old design

That's the only thing I haven't been able to get it to do so far. That and I don't have as many round icons as the pictures of pixel scenes show even though I have the pixel icons all installed and the pixel launcher
Probably a silly question, but I got the OTA when rooted. Is it safe to install it from there, or should I flash it manually (I've only modified build.prop for the Assistant and have the Pixel NavBar as a substratum theme).

Not yet, from what I'm gathering it should be safe, but you lose root. I'll probably test it later today, I don't have the time to deal with it if it goes wrong right now.

This is only exclusive for Pixel Phones.
Installed it this morning. Result: No change. not a single round icon or any change!?? I am confused.
Overnight battery drain now negligible. Much better than before.

Yes it works!
You can change the brightness from the home screen without change any option or install any application.
Press on the notification bar (not open it) and after shows up with the date, just swype left or right to adjust the brightness!!!
Here is my video on youtube to see how it works:

Welcome to 2010 lol. (sorry!).
I think the correct way to do it is just to hold an area on the notification bar (not swype). left is less bright, right is more bright. (at least on latest fws it works like this).
This has been known since éclair. You must have auto brightness off for it to work though.
Thanks for sharing anyway, original thread has probably been lost in the folds. I'm sure there are plenty of new sgs users on here all the time. It is still one of the best smartphones on the market today, and now it's dirt cheap.

So there is no need all this irony....
Although i agree that it might be handy for new users... There is always room for irony or as in this case sarcasm i believe. I rated this find a single facepalm.
I had the phone for one week and didn't knew about this...thanks for sharing!

Thanks for this useful tip
Works on JVQ
There's not a lot of demand for this but here we go anyway haha!
This has only been tested on dynamickat 4.2 and all credit goes to bri315317 for his awesome rom. Also this will not work well with tw so install a 3rd party launcher that supports navbars.
1. First things first back up your rom incase you mess up something and your phone goes poof.
2. open up your build.prop located in your system folder with a file manager and add qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 as the last line in your build.prop
3. Reboot into recovery and Install the Aosp systemui that bri made for his rom.
If you don't wish to customize the navbar buttons then there's no need to proceed further.
4. Download xposed additions for xposed. This is used to disable the hardware buttons.
5. Download gravity box kk for xposed. This is used to customize the navbar buttons and other parts of the rom.
6. Make sure to install another launcher besides tw launcher because tw doesn't work well with softkeys. I installed nova launcher but Googles launcher works as well.
After you've done all of the above reboot and profit
Actually I've done some fairly serious googling to accomplish what you've outlined here.
Hardware home button has been my biggest issue since buying the device. Thanks a bunch

Huh, interesting. Do they show up for you at all? I've only turned it on once to try it out, worked fine but I only used it for a few minutes, so you probably have more insight than I do.
Does anyone else here a problem with the Dialer app? I have an extra bar at the top that is only made for the settings icon and it blocks the first contact.
Edit: Do I need AOSP UI now? I'm on Dynamic Kat 4.2 and was able to get a navbar before, but when I tried to add it just now to get a screen shot of my problem I just get constant UI Crashes.
This happens by editing the build.prop file and with using GB.

This is what I'm talking about. I thought for sure it covered up part of the contacts but it still takes up quite a bit of space.
That's because it adds the menu button. Which takes up space unfortunately. But shouldn't affect anything other then an eye sore
Hey,
So Hope everyone is enjoying their new Z3C, I know I am.
As a first time on-screen key user, the one thing that slightly grates on me is the way the nav bar takes up screen real estate in certain apps. So thought maybe (I'm going out on a limb here and assuming Im not the only one with that mentality) would be useful to compile a list of apps (whether they're games, or simply alternative versions of sms, browser apps) that are full screen. I.e. they support and use the 'Immersive mode' without the need for root.
Browser wise, my contribution is Javelin, which is ALMOST as fast as Chrome, but is extremely elegant and offers full screen, (via transparent nav buttons) which just looks SO much better.
Anyone else? I appreciate you can get any app to be full screen with root tactics..........but still.
Only app I've noticed so far is Reddit Sync with ads removed uses the transparent nav bar and it is beautiful.
Agreed, full immersive mode is the way to go. The on-screen nav buttons are an eyesore, IMO. I can't wait to achieve root (without unlocking the bootloader) so I can apply it to all my most used apps which look far nicer in full immersive mode.

THANKS for mentioning Javelin! I've searched for a good fullscreen browser and it seems this is just what I was looking for.
Regarding the topic - for those of you who don't know it already I can recommend Talon. It's a gorgeous twitter client that can be tweaked in every possible way.
Guys,
I expect you guys know but there is an immersive mode app that i have been using, it doesnt require root and you can even toggle it on and off from the notification bar (there is a setting to enable this).
The only issue is that for apps where you want or need to use a keyboard it doesnt work when active, though you can disable, enter text and re-enable afterwards. You can even toggle it on for the home screen.
Worked well when I was experimenting with it.

Immersive Full-screen mode tis the one
That should be this one?

I'm using All in One Gestures: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phoenixstudios.aiogestures to achieve full immersive mode right now and it's working pretty good, in addition to having a host of other useful shortcuts as well.

Is there anyway to let the app ignore the notch
I know there is an option call essential notch settings in Oreo
xD
close your eyes and repeat after me:
"there is no notch"
"there is no notch"
"there is no notch"
What notch?
After no more than a few weeks I'd completely forgotten it existed.

You know what, the Chinese video app ignore the notch and create a black bar that have the same size as the notification bar....
So... There's two black bar on the left side of the screen
XD
(Long time haven't open XDA)
(It's so hard to speak English!(`Δ´)!)
There was an option in Oreo but it seems to be gone in Pie.
But yeah, for now keep chanting "there is no notch"...
Just look away...
Notch settings came a few updates into 8.1 so I expect the same with 9.

I was expecting the same until Essential responded...
"Thanks for reaching out! Android Pie changed the way all apps interact with the space around the notch, and introduced standardized methods for app developers to support full screen mode. This should drive app developers to update their apps with native full screen options, without the need for custom notch settings.
For our first Android Pie release, we are using Google's standard implementation of the notch space. We will continue to monitor adoption of Pie's full-screen capabilities and evaluate whether it makes sense to customize and re-develop our own notch settings.
Hope that helps answer your question. Have a great day!"

This will remover the notification bar. If you can get xposed working on pie or have a great gestures module you can loose the nav bar as well.

Agreed. I'm seriously considering rolling back to Oreo. What is the point of having screen real estate you can fully use.
Here is hope. Just realized youtube vanced has full working immersion. Shouldn't be long before a magisk module shows up to the rescue.
Essential stated today in their Reddit AMA that notch support will be back however, it'll take a little while due to some code rewrite thus it won't make it into the next security update.
Hello
Since I bought the Note 9 I have a theme bug in the message app, the themes that try to change the messages bubbles don't do it anymore.
And the result is quite dirty: I get messages written white on white !
Do someone have the same issue or am I alone ?

You can't use night mode with themes on. They cancel out each other now.
What android version are you on? If you're on Pie but you're installing a theme and the homescreen screenshot in the store shows the clock widget at the Top of the screen, then that theme isn't updated for Pie as yet and will cause issues with theming.
I am still on Oreo 8.1 and frankly I don't think I will upgrade to Pie, I saw it and OneUi on my wife's S9, it is very elegant and round but all is black or white, no more colors
In fact I had the Note 8 before and it worked properly, when the Note 9 went out, I thought it would be better, with more battery, enhanced audio and so on, but basics like the themes do not work, and I am starting to regret the change.
Besides all the apps have been upgraded to their current version under Oreo

It depends on theme you use. I have themes on Pie with colours everywhere.
I tried Pie and went back to Oreo. Many dark themes, even those updated for Pie had elements that didn't work properly (white text on white backgrounds, misaligned bubble menus). Perhaps they'll improve over time.
For now, Oreo works great and many of the Pie enhancements are available through Good Lock.
And ironically, this upgrade has shown up on my phone yesterday.
Trouble is I really want to stay on Oreo
But now there is a notification about the upgrade that is bugging me and I can't get rid of it. I seached google for a solution but apparently without rooting the phone no one found a way to stop it.
It can be stopped by using an ADB command to uninstall the Software Update app.
