Is it still worth buying the 6P? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently using the OP2 and was Planning to Upgrade to the Pixel.
But at that price point and with those huge bezels it is not a valid option anymore.
The OP2 is okay atm, but for my usage the battery life is horrible.
So i was thinking about buying the 6P or the OP3.
The OP3 has obviously better Specs but after owning the OP2 and seeing how they handle "Old" devices i dont know if i want to still support them.
So at the current price point is the 6P still a good device to buy?
Or do you guys have any other Suggestions in the price range 300-800€?

Yes yes and yes. I bought one for 340 euros few days ago. Nice screen good camera stereo speakers and a nice metallic build for this price is a no-brainer. I won't even mention you can get many Pixel candies running on the 6P plus custom ROMs availability and all the goodness you can find here in XDA.

I recently switched back from a Huawei Mate 8( Screen cracked) and couldnt be happier. Especially if you were interested in the Pixel. You can turn your nexus devices and many more into a pixel outside of camera.
I got a 128gb for around 400 graphite color. Phone is still a beast. Sounds weird but I have to get use to 4hrs of sot again.
It will hold its value a couple more months. Plently of phones releasing next few months also.

I already have a 32go 6P, and I am on the fence to get myself a 128go for travels when I cannot count on the cloud for backups. I use the camera a lot every day, and I guess traveling abroad more frequently makes this purchase adequate. I don't see any reason why I should buy a Pixel XL as the price of the 6P was already high last year. And I already have a oneplus 3 with the SD820 & uefs 2.0. Ok it is noticeable, fast and all but the 810 chip isn't that bad as it has been described. I remember reading from Anandtech that it was the best implementation of this chipset, and it is true. Yeah it has turned hot, at times of heavy usage, lot of photography editing and pictures taking, but that's expected. So... I'd still recommend one, at least, one gets a wonderful 5.7 inches wide screen plus two front facing speakers and soon the same features thanks to the XDA community.

Normal day would get me through a work day easily.
I am a heavy media/web user. On my off days easily 7am till 10pm(typically when I'm sitting still) without a charge.
My work days are what I test. Unplug at 6am stream music/podcast/YouTube from 9-6 off and on using bluetooth. Lots of regular everyday browsing and 1-2hrs of talk time. Normally last %15 around 6pm. Haven't died on me yet while out and about but I adjust my usage naturally.
My usage is heavier at moment, renovating a house so I'm non stop browsing looking for ideals and deals. Birthdays, trip upcoming and holidays so every things ramped up. Nothing beats the mate 8 but I get home with more battery than my wife's note 5 and she's on wifi while out.
As of now im at %54 with 2 hrs of sot. Phones been off charger since 5am.
I forgot about these damn speakers. I always forget to charge my lg headset and was doomed with previous phone. I put the 6p in a metal bowl and speakers are loud and clear with music.

More then Ever. Get it.

It's a fantastic phone. Only one I've liked better is Note 7, and you can't go that route. The camera is really, really good, I think it lacks credit there because of previous Nexus phones. The rest is crazy ROM selection, mods that will bring you Pixel goodness at less price and nougat. What's not to like?

Yes it is. My old G3 died late last month and I replaced it with a 128GB P6. I couldn't be happier with it; and given the crazy price points on the Pixel, I'm glad the G3 died when it did.

I got mine on the note 7 recall day and im loving it! Almost forgot about the s-pen

I'm currently in the same situation as you. I'm getting tired of my one plus 2. Found one Nexus 6P for 300€ with light usage, and I'm seriously thinking in buying it. Should I go for it?

I also want to buy one but I'm afraid of bootloop and battery errors. Please advise me! Thanks so murch.

Nexus 6P, MXP killer?

To start, I'm definitely satisfied with my 64gb, black leather and red accent MXP. My biggest concern right now is the announcement of the Nexus 6P. Modders/developers, will this effect the potential of future development for the MXP? I'm with Verizon, so my choices on rootable/unlocked devices is very limited. Anyone else concerned and debating on selling/returning MXP? Also, with Android M announced, this will now show how truthful Motorola was on updating MXP.

I am happy with Moto. Nexus 6p is not much better oh and more expensive.

I haven't even seen my custom MXP yet and I'm debating returning it. My MXP has been at my house since September 18, but I'm at college and won't be able to retrieve it until October 10. I only have a few days left whether to tell my Mom to return it or not (Motorola only allows returns within 14 days of delivery).
The Nexus 6P definitely looks like the better overall phone spec-wise. But the differences are marginal.
The upsides to the MXP that make this a very hard decision are the customization, so I like the design much better (doesn't look like an iPhone), and the Motorola apps that the phone comes with (I kinda like the fact that it's not 100% stock android, but close). I'll also be able to have it in my possession much earlier (Nexus 6P doesn't look like it's shipping until November).
The only reasons I'd go for the Nexus 6P is the bigger battery and the better dev support.
Very hard decision to make here. Motorola's customization should not be overlooked here, while I think that the Nexus 6P's marginally better specs could be.

I know the two devices are so very similar with a $100 price difference. Just hoping modders will stick with developing for the MXP, biggest reasons for getting the MXP, was for near stock OS and development here at XDA.
Also, who should I donate to for development of CM for MXP? (I know it's probably a huge list of users, I do like compensating those for their time and efforts)

The only person I've seen doing anything with the MXP recently is Harsh. That is great but the odds of people suddenly grabbing this device for development, with its fairly obvious and well reported shortcomings is pretty low IMO. Especially with the nexus already announced and shipping in 30 days.
I bought my MXP on the third and still don't have the stupid thing. Sorry but that is pretty pathetic on Moto's part.
Add to all this Leno gutting Moto right before launch and the odds of updates being speedy being diminished greatly makes the MXP the riskier device.
I don't need the finger print scanner but its nice to have. I normally don't lock my phone but I would with the scanner and for last pass and bank stuff its really nice to not have to tap in my log pass word. Add to that Amoled is better and a better chipset that won't struggle when the gpu runs and bigger battery make the $100 a no brainer. My pure is most likely going back assuming it even gets here.

I wouldn't return it, 6P is much more expensive per storage option and really you'd only be adding a fingerprint scanner, besides that its just a small step up. Also you probably wouldn't see it until years end since on the reddit threadspeoples delivery dates are now at mid-late november and that was hours ago.

The dang device has been out for 3 weeks! The developers that have the brand new device have had it for 3 weeks, and most wouldn't not buy another device after they just bought a $400 phone for a downgrade in specs! //rant

Valid point... Maybe with the 2 devices being so similar, developing for each might not be too different either and possibly porting 6p mods to MXP might be an option.

I'm having a little buyers regret as of today, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $100 more and I've grown to quite like the Moto sensor features and their "always listening" feature.... I use it much more than I thought I would.
I'm sitting here looking at a brand new OnePlus2 that I got yesterday - I received my invite and had to try it. I'm thinking I could sell that and get the 6P (with a little more $$ thrown in) and see what I think of it?
It's a never ending game.... In a couple months, a new Flagship will be out and I'll wish I had that too... I have to stop somewhere and pause for a while.

I have a OnePlus 2 invite as well. I was thinking about trying out lol, mainly because of the fingerprint and Snap 810. I already ordered the Nexus 64GB Aluminum and I will be sending this Moto back.

The OP2 sounds pretty weak (speaker) compared to the MXP. It even sounds pretty weak compared to a Galaxy S6/S6 Edge/iPhone..... Also, during the initial setup my battery went from 93% to 52% in just a 35-40 minute period. This included downloading and applying the 2.1 Oxygen update and several apps from the app store and restarting after the update. My M9 had a Snapdragon 810 and it was snappier than the OP2, IMO, and sounded a lot better too.
I did like the off-screen buttons and the home button/fingerprint scanner.
I think that's what I'll do.... Sell it for as close to the $400 I paid (after shipping) for it and put that back for a N6P.
The biggest complaint I have about the MXP is I can't find a screen protector to fit it!

Interesting... Thanks for the response. I recommend the 6P pre-order, this phone looks like it will be a winner. Huawei makes pretty nice phones, I'm glad they teamed up with Google. I was thinking about getting the OPT still but trying out HydrogenOS, I'm hearing good things about it and of course you always have CM.

You don't have cm with OnePlus 2... They ended their relationship a long time ago, hence why they had to go to Oxygen.

The oneplus one was great. I had an invite for the 2 but I passed on it for the Pure. Now my pure is going back as its not living up to expectations and I have the BIg P on pre order.
Its like $50 more for the nexus. Lots of little things make that worth it, biggest of all is the development on the nexus will be much better.

For me switching to the Nexus will only cost me about $5 more or $55 more if I do a 64GB since I spent $475 on the Moto with 32GB and wood cover and $20 on a memory card I probably don't need but bought simply because I could lol. So take away the memory card and the upgrade is only $25 but I get a better battery, fingerprint reader, instant updates, at least 2 years of updates, maybe better camera, AMOLED displace, notification light, etc....seems like a good deal at least for me.

I'm basically in the same situation. 64gb with leather and have a 64gb SanDisk UHS 3 card. If I bought the 64gb 6p I would save money. I might just keep MXP so I don't have to deal with selling it.

Just to update you on something, OT here...
I boxed up my MXP this morning and have been using the OP2 all day... I've got about 10 hours of up-time with about 1:20 SOT and I'm at 77% on my battery. To be honest, this feels just about like the MXP... And I'm hoping this gets better after a few days of use (set up like a new ROM last night before bed).
I've had wifi on all day, took more calls than usual (4 calls), listened to music through my speaker (still sounds weak) and played 3 songs though my bluetooth speaker, just to test it out........Plus all the normal texting, email, weather, app updates, ect...
So the battery seems to be better after initial setup, which I'm extremely glad!
Now, if I can just make it with this super weak speaker for 5 weeks until my N6P arrives, that's gonna be the hardest!

So I ended up passing. I ordered the product and I saw the processing time may take 5-10 days. Who know, maybe we'll get lucky and the 6P ships early (fingers crossed) . I've been using my OPO and It's still smooth as day one, so I will hold on to it and use it as my backup phone. I will probably use the OPT money for a smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S2 comes out tomorrow.

Sounds like a good plan! I never had the OPO, but it seems to still have a pretty strong following.
FWIW: I was told there was a 5-10 processing period too, ordered it Thursday evening.....Tried to cancel it a couple hours later and was told "it's already been processed and cannot be cancelled now".... It arrived Monday morning. So I think the 5-10 day is a CYA thing they use, which isn't a bad thing, I guess?
I did the Smartwatch thing earlier this year (Moto360 than a Sony SW3)... Loved it at first, but it only lasted about a month. I didn't like the bluetooth drain on the battery..... My OCD already watches my phone battery too much, with the extra drain and now another device to watch the battery on, I didn't get anything done!

Did you regret buying the S8+ ?

I saw lot of people complaining about the S8 plus, some are saying the phone is very fragile, others doesnt like at all the new screen ratio, aggressive RAM management....etc
Well i'm curious and want to know if the S8 plus is really a flop,how is your experience with this device ?

I love mine. Some things are a bit annoying (The swipe feature on the keyboard is extremely inaccurate, every so often the phone will pause while loading an app for a few seconds) but no phone is perfect, the S8+ is close though.

I own the device for about a week and I have to say that it covers almost all of my needs but:
1. The battery life is worse than the S7 Edge or 1+3T (at least for me)
2. S8+ feels a little bit boring after a while
Overall, I didn't regret at all since it is nearly perfect

Is your battery really worse? My S8+ has nearly triple the battery life that I was getting on my S7!

The built in swipe keyboard is horrible, ended up putting gboard on it.

NO, not a single issue with it so far and had it since day one. I believe a lot of the issues can be attributed to user and not the phone.

Don't think I regret it, but the only reason I switched from my iPhone 6S Plus is because I was bored.
Usability and speed (Other than the occasional Android lag) is about the same for my use. (Emails, messaging and like 1 game, FateGO)
So I feel like the money I paid for what I gained isn't exactly proportionate, but it's been a while since I used Android as my main phone, so I decided to jump back for a bit. it's been good.
Having to worry about screen protectors that fit my case is dumb tho.
Also smart unlock with my Bluetooth headphones makes up for the fingerprint scanner being on the back of android phones.

I'm not crazy about the waterfall screen but I'm getting used to it.
Otherwise I love it. Picked it up for$725 can't go wrong at that price

Well my S8+ gets me around 4-5 hours SOT while my S7Edge got me 6-7 hours SOT
My OnePlus3T gave me about the same SOT with the S7E

I sold it because it was to boring, the camera was pretty bad and the battery (without any modification and dual SIM always on) was horrible

Dont regret the phone, i love it, but i regret having more **** on downpayment in my life..

I was worried about what I was going to see in this post because I just ordered mine and expect it on Wednesday. I'm glad to see it is mostly positive reviews.

This is the best phone I ever had. The FD version seems to be the worst, tho coz the battery life is not as amazing as F or U version, but still get me thru the day. But android is boring me somehow. im willin to change to iphone again. After 7 years on adnroid, i want to try ios

Hmmm NOPE.. Lol

I came from a v20 and that was a bad phone and I regret ever getting the phone. I decided to give Samsung a try, even though I hated Samsung. I got the Exynos version and boy do I love it! Although it has the pink/red hue on the sides, I don't notice it after a while using it. I did minimize it by changing the display colors a little bit.
Over all I love it. It's super fast on AT&T and I'm able to root. So far LOVE it!.

I'm not regretting buying the phone at all. Everything works great, the speaker is really loud and im averaging around 6 1/2 to 7 hours of SOT at 3/4 brightness. I bought the G955U1 Snapdragon US unlocked version and I actually got one with a perfect screen without the red hue. I wish it were the old aspect ratio as I really wanted a larger device but I can live with the size. If the new Note is larger when it comes out I'll probably give the S8+ to the wife and get the Note but only if it's around a 6.5 incher or larger.

This isn't true at all. FD version is quite good on battery. I've gone all day on this. SOT about 7 hours.

Sort of. The screen of 8+ is so minute compare to my 6.8" Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra. Am thinking going back to Zenfone 3 Ultra now. Other than this I think its a good phone to keep though.

I have had mine a week today, about to go back to the store with it as it has the redish tint down each side of the screen and its driving me nuts! Even after playing with the settings i still feel like I can see it. I have come from a 6P and to be honest the 2 things i really miss is the width of the 6P, the keyboard was a bit more spaced out and i made less mistakes with my fat fingers... the 2nd thing is the updates direct from google...I was running the Android O beta on it... and now i am running 7.0?! I did look at the Pixel XL when making my choice but it just felt like a step back when you stood in front of the S8 and Pixel, i mean - no wireless charging which i have to say is one of the best features for me with this phone, i have wireless charging points at home and work and so i never run out of power and it is so quick!

Why I Cancelled my note 8 order

Having my two phones on pre-order and back ordered has given me time to reflect on dropping 2k on two phones.
But the more I thought about the more it makes sense. Anyone else in the same boat as me?
Still rocking my s7 edge on u firmware. Tbh my phone is still plenty fast with 0 bloat. Even with u firmware battery has taken a hit. Below are my reason for skipping:
1. Battery life - I understand trying to rebrand image not having a flaming brick. But to have $1000 flagship phone have less capacity than the s8+(3500) and s7 edge (3600) is inexcusable. Although they say battery is more efficient, I am sure a year from now or sooner, people will start complaining once the device has been burned in.
2.. Finger print reader location. If not in display, then I rather theyimplement into screen or power button in side.
3. Audio. For a 1k music should pristine with a quality dac and dual speakers.
4. Not compatible with 600mhz spectrum. Again for this price it should be future proof with new spectrum. Big miss imo.
5. Price.1k for a phone? Really ? I can buy a one plus or v30 with a decent tablet for that price
These are my gripes what about everyone else.

What I said was very conservative and resonable.
I did not mention sketchy irsis scanning,non removable battery, no IR.
Asking for bigger batteries when phones from a year ago had them is not a rocketship demands . It's the equivalent to Tropicana changing from 64oz to 59oz serving while charging the same or higher price.
Not rocketship when s7edge was one of first phones that supported 700mhz radio which prolongs the life of device.
I guess I like a good value and have received that in times past from samsung devices.

Same.. I didn't order yet but was thinking do I really need it right now... Yes a miss having a note. But this phone really is close to what I paid for my laptop. I really hate this s7 but still paying it off.. Maybe I'll wait also for the note 9 to come out.

Well to each their own! I'm absolutely loving the phone so far but I can see how these reasons can deter people from purchasing. Also I'm coming from a note 4 so this is a pretty major upgrade for me!
Battery is a huge improvement. Even though only about 200mah bigger, it last almost twice the amount of time. The 600mhz also isn't a big deal for me since I get great service and it's not estimated to roll out withinthe next 1-2 years anyways. I don't really understand people's issue with the fingerprint scanner. I don't see how you could smudge the camera unless you're dragging your finger across the back since it's not even directly next to the lens.
Also for 30 bucks a month it made it much more attainable for me.

If I didn't get the help with T-Mobile while in between Note 7 and Note 8 then I would of purchased the LG V30 this year. This year is a good year for good high end devices. You don't need to go for Samsung devices or $900 + devices.
I am happy with the Note 8. Though next year I will be looking at what all Android device manufactures are making before making the next purchase.

4. Not compatible with 600mhz spectrum. Again for this price it should be future proof with new spectrum. Big miss imo.
5. Price.1k for a phone? Really ? I can buy a one plus or v30 with a decent tablet for that price

All understandable concerns. But in practice I haven't found any of them to be that bad.
The battery is considerably better than any phone I've had previously. And I've had quite a few. iPhones , notes, nexi, the pixel, and both the V10 and v20. The lgs had by far the worst battery life, the iPhones, would get me through most of a day even the 6s plus would be under 10% if not dead when I would plug in at the end of the day. My Pixel and S7 don't make it. They all have to be plugged in as I wind down the day. The note 8 is incredible. I brought it down below 10% once on the first charge just to let it do one full cycle. But even with 6-7hrs SOT I'm still in the 20 or 30% range at the end of my day.
I bought a 5500mah battery case just for shiggles, I won't have to charge my phone for 3 days with the case on. But really I wouldn't let the battery hold you back.
I do agree with the fingerprint reader, both the LGs and the Pixel had the finger print reader in the middle of the back, which is a lot more convenient for the way I hold my phone but I've adjusted to the off center higher up placement. But it's still awkward.
The dual speaker miss is I guess a personal concern. I almost never use the speakers on my phone, I'm either connected to a Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth speaker and those have their own DAC. Which is also I guess why the phone DAC doesn't bother me either. If you listen a lot to headphones and want premium sound you'd probably use an amp anyway.
Also this phone isn't really all that much more expensive than previous notes. The note 4 and 7 were about $850. The note 8 is not cheap but I feel it is in line with current pricing. There are definitely nice phones for less, but they all lack the Wacom digitizer and stylus. Which definitely adds to the cost of development and materials and more importantly takes up space, leaving less room inside the phone, hence the smaller battery. And let's not forget, a very very large majority of people who had the note 7, are getting their phone for 525ish. So it's not really even a $600 phone. T-Mobile did BOGO so for about 1200 after all is said and done you end up with 2 phones. That's after taxes and adding a line. So again about $600.

I was in a similar boat, my unlocked was backordered out into October and during that time I started convincing myself I didn't need the phone, but on release day I walked into tmobile and walked out with 2 note 8s and boy am I glad I did. I'll sell the second and I've already sold the S7 I was going to trade in. I still have the pixel and an iPhone 6s to play around with for when I want to run Oreo or whatever comes next since my one gripe with Samsung is how long it takes to get updates. But this easily became my daily driver. And I haven't looked back yet.

Thanks man needed to hear that. Very similar experiences. Audio was trash with the s7 and purchased a dragon fly black DAC a while back. I just went ahead with BOGO and am getting an additional 100GF.

Having used the Note 8 for about a week now, here are my experiences:
1. According to reports, the Note 8's battery life is as good as or even better that the s8+. And compared to my Note 7 (3500 mAh), the Note 8 (3300 mAh) lasts WAY longer and has a longer Screen on Time. I usually had to charge the Note 7 at around 7-8 pm (20% battery), but with the Note 8 I hit 20% at around 11 pm. And compared to my last daily driver, the Note 3, the Note 8 is 10000000x better. I lose 20% every 30 minutes on the Note 3 while in use, on the Note 8 it's more like 3-4% every 30 mins.
2. I actually prefer the rear placement for some reason. This was one of my biggest worries when the phone was announced, but I'm having no problems with it so far. Ironically, I used the iris scanner as my main unlocking method for the Note 7, but I seem to be using the fingerprint scanner more on the Note 8. Maybe it's because the 8's scanner is vertical while the 7 was horizontal and you get more finger real estate with the 8. I remember having to tap the Note 7's scanner 2 or 3 times before it would register, while on the Note 8 it's been once (very rarely twice) to unlock.
3. Yeah, Samsung speakers suck. It's been that way for all the Notes and all the Galaxy S phones. Even my Nexus S had crappy speakers. So yes, I agree that the Note 8 has crappy speakers as usual.
4. Not really a concern for me. According to the T-Mobile rollout map, my area won't have the 600 spectrum until 2020, so I'll probably have the Note 10 or 11 by then. Plus, what a lot of people who complain about the 600 mHz miss is that TMo also has the 700 mHz spectrum and the Note 8 has the antenna for it. Both share the same advantages of lower-frequency radio waves. Compared to my Note 3, which barely gets 2 bars, the Note 8 is constantly 4-5 bars.
5. Yeah, agree with you on this one as well, $1K is a bit much. The only reason I got the Note 8 is because Samsung only wanted $580 for it. ($425 discount and $70 iphone 5s trade in) That's cheaper than any flagship phone coming in the next year even with Black Friday discounts.

I came from a t-mobile note 5, held off getting the note 7, coz for me new gadgets tend to have bugs, true enough it happened, but now my daughter's note 3 is having problems, then t-mobile had a note 8 zero down and $40+ a month jump on demand with just $7.50 up front for shipping, so no brainer for me, sold the note 3 to pay off note 5 and gear s2. Now between note 5 vs 8 worlds apart, 8 battery excellent for the last week I've used it, Wi-Fi on, Bluetooth on, aod on 7pm to 7am, 3 email sync every 30 minutes, facebook sync, weather screen, hd widgets ever 30mins refresh, 3-6 calls ranging from 20 mins to over an hour, I play games, brightness 55%-60, fully charged at 1230am it's 1020 pm already and I still have 32% battery. Yes i know I should have held off a little longer but 2 years no new phone, upgrade bug got me. ?
I don't use the finger print sensor just for camera shots, don't use facial recognition, I use iris scanner but mostly I use pattern with pin code as its faster for me to open it. I don't use phone speakers to listen to music coz I know most mobile phones speakers are crappy especially if you have a good home theater set up, I always use a good set of headphones, I guess just have fun with the new toy. Try to bargain or wait for one with your carriers if they have a good promo.

Its one thing to blindly buy a 1k phone, because you are a fan of a company's products, but its another thing to actually assess the product's value in relation to the price. I did not buy the note 8. I received it free through the tmobile deal buy one get one free. Tbh, if it were me gauging the price of this phone to be $700-800 for all its combined features. I sure as hell would have not coughed up 1k for this thing. Hell you could very well buy yourself an s8+ for cheaper with a note stylus and save a ton more money. People like to jump up and down claiming the s-pen is worth the $200-300 mark up compared to the s8+, but when it comes down to it majority do not even use the damn thing (surely not worth that markup price either).
In addition, scrutinizing the company for the price in relation to the actual product is a good thing. Consider what apple is doing for their new iphone, it has taken away essential phone feature (headphone jack) forcing people to buy the accessories to use headphones, finally implementing fast charge that require additional accessory purchases and marking up the phone for 1k. This is because they are aware that their fan-base that blindly buy their new products is so large that they can sell the same with implementing less. The last thing we want are android companies doing the same unsavory business models. All in all, I highly respect OP's opinion and choice.

I agree mostly, I don't think I could really get myself to pay so much for this phone of I had to pay full price. It's getting ridiculous! The Note 7 prior owner discount was a big plus because I was going to use the full refund from my Note 7 and just pay the extra 100 dollars out of pocket. Now I'm keeping the entire refund and paying half with a qualifying device turned in, an option I like better since ideally I'd like this phone to be priced close to 600 dollars. Then there is always the fact that to date the Note series is still in a class of its own. Yes, I do use the pen.

1. The battery life hasn't been of an issue to me. This is coming from a person who (very briefly) owned an S8+ with a larger battery, as well as a Pixel XL (still own it) with a slightly larger battery. I have no clue what magic research sauce Samsung employed behind the scenes in the Note 8 battery design, but it works, and it works well, in spite of the bigger and bright as hell screen. I haven't had any battery complaints at all in terms of average usage (streaming, web surfing, email management, social media updates, etc). I am easily getting 4-5 (and sometimes with conservative use 5.5-6) hours of screen on time. The device doesn't even really warm up, either, except under the utmost heaviest of loads.
2. The fingerprint sensor, while still inopportunely placed, is an improvement over the sensor on the S8+. The sensor is inlaid some and distanced a bit more from the camera/flash modules. I don't use it as my main biometric, but it is there when I do use it and accurate enough.
3. Samsung has always had lousy external speakers...but then again I live a lifestyle that isn't necessarily conducive to carrying around my smartphone on my shoulder like a boombox, either, so yeah. It is a bit w/e.

S8 in late 2018?

Looking to buy my wife a new phone cause her iPhone 6S battery is dieing out. I plan to get her the S8 exynos and flash a pixel room. Thought about getting her an S9 buy the exynos version has problems with poor battery. Plus the S8 is on sale for $375.
Her use is mainly messaging, social media apps and youtube. How's the speed/fluidity of the phone?
I ask cause I have a pixel 2xl and it's working flawlessly. Smoother than the OnePlus 6 I had before it. The SD835 isn't far behind the SD845 like one would think. I also heard good things about the exynos 8895.
I really don't want to get her a phone with issues cause I'll end up having to buy her another one. Would appreciate detailed opinions/reviews. Thanks.

I got the phone about a month ago and here are my thoughts:
-Not as fast as a Pixel 2 or a Oneplus 6 but still good enough. You wouldn't call this a slow phone. Apps won't launch as quickly as a phone with stock android, but it's not a big deal imo. Reduce the animation time from developer settings and you'll be good to go.
-Camera is fantastic. Sometimes even better than the S9.
-Battery life is good after some tweaking. I get about 6 hours of SOT and a full day of mixed use.
-Samsung Experience UI is so much better than the old TouchWiz. I'd suggest that you try it before switching to a custom rom. Features like Good Lock can help you customize your phone like never before. It's not the gimmicky bloat of the past.
-The curved screen is a bloody pain for phone cases and tempered glasses. But I still like it. Makes the grip of the phone much better for me. I'd suggest getting a full screen glue tempered glass from AliExpress or a Whitestone Dome from Amazon (this may sound like a trivial point but trust me, it's very important).
I think the S8 is a great value buy over the S9. I got it for about $380 myself and I have no regrets. Fantastic features, keeps the headphone jack.

I've followed most of these settings.
Make sure you add most of your apps to the "Always Sleeping Apps" list in the battery settings.
Turn off background data for apps you don't need.
Use the "Moderate" setting of battery saving and customize it to your preference.
SOT varies from person to person. On a very heavy day with a full day of 4g use I can get about 4.5-5 hours SOT.
On a light day, I get about 6-6.5 hours
Today was quite a light day. Maybe about an hour of continuous 4g use. Rest has been WiFi and social media.

I only make 3-4h SOT....
So... NO

I have this phone for about 10 months now. I had no troubles with it. I haven't seen an app crash since i updated from a really sh phone, alcatel one youch idol mini 3, so from my experience its effin superb phone. Display is amazing, really, amazing. Full screen videos are outstanding, youtube option to zoom till filled is just wow. 2 apps at the same time is my fav option. YT on top and anything else on the bottom. Two accounts for social media apps. Additional storage.. amazing camera with super slo mo 4k video etc.. all in all my experience for s8+ is 9/10

I just got mine second hand about 3 months ago. That is a good deal.
Coming from iphone 6plus(work phone) I did not think I would like it. My other phone at that time was an essential phone. And all my previous phones were pure android. So I did not think I would like the samsung overlay.
It is great the only thing I have done was turn on developer options to get rid if navigation buttons and notification area.
I use it heavily for work email. My app is not battery optimized. Syncing data for changes documents and some tethering data.
Each day I put on the charger at 5:45am and I take it off the charger about 7am and it last me all day until I go to bed about 11pm. I don't pay attention to the battery percentage since I hide the notification at top.
As for speed I don't have a problem.
I would not worry about rooting the phone unless there is a tweak you really need. I have rooted and ROMed every phone but this one. The samsung extras are really good

Nah I still got mine other than a couple stock restores due to bricking mine doesn't ever lag. But I am also rooted and tweaked to the max allowable.
I would have to say depending on the price it's still a good option just no root method for US users any more

I got one yesterday after the live event and put it in my cart then I realized I can't justify $946 for a phone that has a few better features than my GP2XL. I love my Pixel2xl and spending that much money for essentially a better camera, graphics, and processor (none of which are THAT important to me) doesn't make sense to me. So I cleared my cart and bought a new case for my GP2XL instead for $11 on Amazon. Like Pixel 3, the Pixel 4 just doesn't wow me enough to spend that kind of money. I am not a astrophotographer so that doesn't matter to me.

I will eventually but waiting for a better deal than just 100 off. I was disappointed by the value of trade ins but I'll probably hold onto my pixel 2 until the photo upload promo expires.
Things I'm looking forward to on the pixel 4.
1) snappier performance with hopefully better memory management
2) the faster Google Assistant with continued conversation like feature. I'm a heavy voice command user and cutting down on the amount of times I say the launch phrase will be welcomed.
3) wireless charging. I think it's time for me to get it back now that my family is all on wireless charging. The pads can be used for multiple devices now.
4) better display. I've gotten used to the pixel 2 display but always long for more when I look at Samsung or apple OLED displays.
5) soli seems a bit gimmicky but if it allows me to change songs in my car without having to touch it, then that will be huge for me. Easier than me having to buy a new car or a new head unit.
Things I worry about
1) that face id better be damn good. Smart Lock is starting to get wonky. My watch doesn't keep my phone unlocked at all times like it's supposed to. Keeps saying locked manually.
2) original photo upload. It's something I think won't miss until it's gone. Sharing albums with friends and not having it compressed takes the sting out of not having something like iMessage which doesn't compress photos. Now i have to figure out a different way to share the full quality pictures with them
3) battery life.... ALWAYS BATTERY LIFE!

Nope I bought 2 refurbished 2xls so I'm set for the Long haul. I despise glass backs.

I was going to order last night but I'm honestly just not that impressed with the specs. Think I'll keep my XL2 for another year and just save some money.

Yes, Pixel 4 XL. Way better camera, best display on the market, onboard AI no need for data connection, live transcribe, motion sense, fastest face unlock, faster CPU, 6GB RAM and afree chrome book. Let's be honest most of these features cannot be backported to the Pixel 2, maybe some camera tweaks. The transcribe required the new AI chip and service so unlikely. And my Pixel is starting to show it's age, likes to stutter a little now and again.
Many people moaned the Pixel 2 only had 4GB RAM, so there's a reason for them to upgrade.

Same boat as Badger50. I ordered one with delivery of next week. If it doesn't wow me, I'll return it and probably get the OP7T. If the 7T doesn't do it for me, then P2xl lives on.

Pre-ordered it immediately when the Google Store was refreshed. I thought about doing the trade-in and even ordered the box for it but I think I'll try my luck with Swappa instead. I'm sure I'll get more than Google's $143 offer with all the cases and accessories I have.

I'm still undecided on whether I'm going to get one or not. I'm still using my pixel 2XL, and it performs just as well as the day I bought it 2 years ago, no joke. I skipped the 3XL--no explanation necessary. I was thinking I might wait and see what the 4A looks like when that comes out, but I'll probably cave in and get the 4XL eventually. However, I'm not pre-ordering it or even thinking about actually buying it until I see that root is available for it. I pre-ordered the pixel 2XL and it royally sucked to go without root for the first few weeks.

Exactly what I was hoping with the P4 when the P3 sucked. What do I do when the P5 sucks next year. I'm starting to consider an iPhone.

Sharing albums with friends and not having it compressed takes the sting out of not having something like iMessage which doesn't compress photos. Now i have to figure out a different way to share the full quality pictures with them

1. It's looking very fast and even though right now it's able to unlock with eyes closed (not a big deal for me) I'm sure they're working on adding an eyes open option. It was in the leaks.
2. High quality is plenty for average people but One Drive is super affordable. 100GB for $20/year isn't a lot at all.
3. Really curious how good/bad it'll be. I used to get as much as 7-8 hours SOT my first 6-8 months with my Pixel 2 XL.
