[General] A few questions/simple discussion. - Honor 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I passed by the "Win an Honor 8" thing quite the few times and had recognized the name from somewhere. I don't have any luck when it comes to raffles and I have no income currently to get one myself so I wanted to ask some things in the forums here. (I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to talk about it.)
I saw that there was some major hype around the Honor5X/8(?) and I wonder what the main selling point for this is. Is it strong in any particular field such as performance, reliability, or photography? Thank you for putting up with my silly questions

Broad question. The appeal of the Honor 8, at least as far as I understand it, is good performance for a low price.

hey group
hey you guys im new to this forum im actually participating in the chance to win the honor 8. it looks like it will be a major player in the months to come. im currently using an oppo find 7 qhd display and ive had it for at least 2 years now. although i do not want to change phones since im so use to this one i would still purchase this phone and use it as my business daily phone

As far as Honor 5X is concerned, it targets the budgeted segment who expects metallic feel with Fingerprint sensor at the price point of 200$.
Honor 8 targets the photography part and its glass layered design. You can see the Saffire blue model for its attractiveness.
As far as all Honor Mobiles are concerned, 2 years software update is guaranteed unless there is any hard restriction such as Carrier support (or) Hardware support.

I looked into the Honor series a bit and I'm either considering the Honor 8 or the Moto Z Play right now to change from my Nexus 5. I will however miss the unlimited cloud storage for video and pictures. But frankly 16GB (12 usable) is way too little storage space nowadays and having to carry a charger at all times is dragging me down (by the pants at least) so I really need to upgrade. But thank you all for the discussion :3

Coming from CM as a daily driver I really dislike EMUI and it's a shame CM for the honor 8 doesn't work properly yet.
It's also been one of the main critiques of the Honor 8.
If you want it for gaming, don't. other than that, ignore benchmarks, day to day performance is fantastic which is the main reason why I got it.
The other one is the design.
Although the non gorilla glass back seems to be somewhat fragile according to some.
I also don't find it as slippery as most reviewers claim.
So yeah in short performance for the price is great.
For me personally it's an iPhone 6 for half the price and without iOS. So a great deal.

[Q] [URGENT] Help me pick between the OnePlus Two and the 6P before my invite expires

Hello everyone,
I have been aiming for the OnePlus Two for a while now but since I didn't get an invite and the 6P got announced I thought I'd have that one. Until today that I have received a OPT invite. Now please help me pick which is better, do I get the OPT right now or do I let the invite expire and wait for the 6P?
I've got less than 23 hours to use the invite please help me pick quick.
Thank veeeeeeery much
From a developer stand-point:
Both phones are development phones. Both the Nexus 6P and OP2 are going to have support for almost every rom that exists. Here's the difference, the 6P will have longer support for every rom (As in for years). On the other hand, the OP2 will loose rom support of a fraction of the roms it has right now after CM 13/6.0 source is out. Also Nexus devices are home to new non-ROM/Kernel projects. These include multirom (dual boot), WuguFresh toolkit, etc.
Also Google will support the device for much longer than OP will ever support the Two.
My vote: 6P

Yes, you're right about that but the one thing that is scaring me off the 6P is that it might have problems when it launches and there are no in-depth reviews yet of it

This is a valid concern, but there's nothing you can do about it at the moment except pick your priorities.
There is a method you can use that can help you decide...since all of the facts known at present are the only ones with which you can work. Example: you'll likely not find an in depth review until the actual units have begun shipping...many companies have pre-release devices, but likely agreed to not complete a full review in exchange for physically having the device (ie, away from Google) prior to launch.
Let me know and I'll walk you through it. It's a pen & paper version of conjoint analysis. It'll only take a few minutes, and you'll have your answer.

I've watched every single hands-on video about the device on the launch event in an effort to gather as much possible information about it but I'm afraid it might not live up to the hype. I hear for example all reviewers say it's got one of the best panels, an awesome camera.... but those people only had a short time to assert those things.

No, but I know of no one who has the device and can rightly use their experience with the device to assist you without breaking the nondisclosure agreement they likely had to sign.
I can help you with your decision using only the facts available as of this writing.
Would you like such assistance or not?

I feel Google will be a lot better to rectify defects of a 6p before op would. They were terrible with customer support and I think still are. You have a great backing with Google.
If you got the $$, the Nexus 6P is a no brainer.

If you aren't put off by the price difference then 6p all the way. I have the oneplus one (came from nexus 5) and since lollipop its became a rather poor device, mobile data will occasionally be unavailable once switching from WiFi or to a new cell tower and it requires a reboot to fix (this is an OPO specific issue). Still not fixed and it took them a year to implement a reasonable software fix for the flawed touch screen.
Updates were extremely late and never provided by deadlines they gave us and the hardware support is terrible where they generally seem to class every RMA as water damage and ask for money to repair a faulty device.
Gave up with oneplus, too many promises and they don't deliver on it. Oxygen OS is still alpha state (in my opinion), the hardware of the oneplus two is still lacking as again they said the camera would be awesome but its not.. They cut NFC which is actually used by a fair few people and that includes me so its an immediate no from me even excluding all the previous crap.
My nexus 5 is still fast day to day than my OPO, says it all really and I can't wait to get back to the nexus line. Was going to get the 5x but its too similar to the original 5 so I thought screw it I'll get the 6p as its pretty much the same size as the OPO but thinner and has stereo speakers and AMOLED display!
Fyi you will get a biased response here but my honest opinion is if the price is acceptable to you and the size is then the 6p is the vastly superior choice.
Enjoy either one

Zuk Z2 Pro

This sounds awesome, they're going all out with this, cant wait to see some hands-on/reviews. Hard to believe, 6GB RAM devices are already starting to surface, when 4GB is still really just begun to appear in the big flagships.

It doesn't have nfc, but still, it's a really impressive device. 5.5" screen and 3500mah battery and it would be my perfect phone!
I'm guessing there will be alot of development on here in terms of custom roms & kernels for this new bad boy ?
Official Site
It has good hardware at a very convincing price....I am definitely going for it...rest on our awesome xda developers who will anyways develop custom roms for the phone(hopefully it doesnot have bootloader unlocking restrictions like we have in mi 5)...my next phone for sure....

Again this will depend on whether our developers decide to buy this or not. It is without doubt the best specced phone for the price!!!
Just seen this device in an article earlier as well, this is the LITE version!!!?? It seems to be listed on oppomart for pre-order and is running a stock like rom, although the pictures may be just mockups and so I wouldnt rely on them. Theres some serious hardware on offer for a fraction of the money of the big brands. Obviously it probably wont have the same amount of development as the ZUK, but looks to be an impressive device nonetheless.

I really don't hope a plastic type at least scratch resistant mineral glass. of course sapphire would be best but i doubt it.
And wondering durability. Saw a test of the Xiaomi Mi5. flimsy as f#*k.
Waiting for some more camera test for Z2 and Z2 pro. I am not convinced yet. Saw some pics and they looked a bit blurry..

I would definitely wait for the one plus 3, it's just around the corner and has great specs for half the price of a 6p depending on where you live. I bought the 6p coming from the OP2 but it was the smallest upgrade ever for me. Qhd screen is not a plus, surely the 6p screen which is bad and the front facing speakers are hyped but still useless to me. Battery life ain't better. The camera is the only thing that's better for me. Near Stock Android is also available for oneplus phones. I'm just saying, wait a little.

True, that's why I sold the OP2 but that was just because of the fingerprint scanner, since MM that problem is solved.
To be honest, development for the Nexus nowadays is also not what is was back in the day.
I'll see what I do but after a year with the 6p I will buy something else. Maybe the HTC 10 or oneplus 3.

This doesn't bother me. When I had my one plus one I ran oxygen os when it was released and ditched junk cm. I had no desire to run custom roms with it. Same with one plus two. I used oxygen. All I need is root. I don't feel the need for custom roms. Even now with my 6p I try a custom ROM but always return to stock anyways. But of course not everyone feels that way...tho I think people are jumping on board with that.

I didn't know that, and didn't want to know that, because I don't care about mid-range phones with small screens. If you want to ask about another phone, be that V8 or something else - post your own question as a separate thread. There is no need to hijack this thread to talk about another device, my thread was not meant for.

Honor 8 is not "flagship", from any angle you look at it. It is classified as a mid-ranger on most tech blogs out there, and rightfully so. It doesnt crack the top 10 phones in any specs category. Since Huawei Honor Note 8 forum does not exist as of the moment of writing - I think it's reasonably appropriate to post a question about it here. If moderators decide later on it does not belong - it could be moved to Honor Note 8 forum, once created.

It's not about specs, it's about price....300$ to 500$ is a mid-ranger, and any thing that exceedes 600$ is a flagship.

That is literally, the most ridiculous, outrageous and lunatic assertion I've heard anyone make on XDA in the past decade. I wouldn't even know where to begin to tell you how very very very very wrong you are!
If you don't get a meaning of "flagship device" - go read some Wikipedia or dictionary definition, I guess.
According to your logic, most real high end devices from a country like China, for example LeEco phones, which have 4-6GB RAM, latest Snapdragon chip (820 or 821), or phones from Xiaomi with similar specs, which never cost $600 or more for reasons, obvious to everyone but you, are mid-rangers? And ****ty devices with 5 year old specs, with either Georgio Armani logo on them, or made out of gold, or covered in 38 carats of diamonds, which cost anywhere from 10 grand to 150k, are flagships?!
Wow... Don't embarrass yourself in public, do some reading and self-education, learn about different economies, price inflations, developing world markets, etc. before making comments like that. Phone price has literally ZERO impact in determining, whether the device is flagship or not. It is true, that in many markets the opposite is correct - device, which is a flagship, is priced higher, than other devices from the same region. However, there is absolutely no connection/correlation whatsoever in the opposite direction - device's price does NOT have any impact on it's classification as high-end, low-end, mir-ranger or a flagship device.

If you don't get a meaning of "flagship device" - go read some Wikipedia or dictionary definition, I guess.

hey friend, let them talk.
I just received my Huawei Honor Note 8 and it doesn't feel like a flagship. It feels more like a flagship - RAPER. My Xiaomi Note Pro looks like a potato next to it.
PS: I feel like insulting all other phone users around me when using this phone. It's just superb in almost every way.

And it costs half the price of other flagships, too... 5.3 million pre-orders can't be wrong - people know what they're investing in. Kirin955 chip is in the top 3 of all benchmark categories amongst all latest chips, and this is the only device in the world with 2k screen, which is bigger than 6.5". 4500mAh battery doesn't hurt either - you will find such battery size in less than a handful of devices worldwide.

Reported, as off-topic post. I have already previously asked very kindly - if you want to discuss another phone - make a thread for it. Do not hijack threads about other devices. I created this thread for Huawei Honor Note 8.
I am getting my Note 8 today (assuming DHL can find my place).
What's the best way to root it?

Congrats, and that's an excellent question! To answer it, hopefully admins here will create a forum for this phone, where devs and users could post verified rooting method. This article offers a rooting method, but it's unverified by anyone I know or XDA, so if you wanna try it - do it at your own risk and report the results back here.
Since this is related to the phone in topic...
Question: are these the same phone?

The differences from the one in gsmarena are the colors, front camera, and 4400mAh battery.
Also, can somebody upload somewhere photos taken by their own Huawei Honor Note 8's camera? Unmodified, straight from the camera, with EXIF please. Hopefully with variations like bright scene, dark scene, etc.
Thank you very much.
KingRoot doesn't work as not enough requests for root yet on this model.
An issue I am having if anyone can help is with Play Store. When installing a large application, PS always closes before its finished downloading. Smaller ones are fine. I've disabled the power saving options for PS etc.. Its a weird one and I don't have this problem with my other Huawei.

What's your ETA for the Android O update?

So, a few sources say that our devices will receive the Android O update very soon and to pass the time, why not share our expected or assumed OTA roll-out dates? I think that we will receive the update by the end of this month. What about you?
Agreed. I think they will probably release a rollback package or something like that with the original firmware to go along with it (7.0).
Here Are The Facts..

It's ironic how you say this topic is irrelevant when you only reply with, "it's coming" which indicates absolutely nothing. This is a thread for everyone's expected ETA as the official rollout date is still unannounced. On another note, hopefully I won't deal with dense users like I did on the Le 2 forums, shudders.

From everything that I've read and taking Honor's past into consideration I think we may have to wait until March, which makes little to sense to me.
Why isn't Honor putting a little more effort into marketing this device? I've bought a half a dozen so far, primarily for friends that were still using phones from 3-5 years ago. They all love it and of course, coming from older devices, they feel like this device is a flagship!
Only real thing I miss is NFC, but my watch has it. 2.4 GHz is what I use for everything but my video streaming devices. I really could care less it still has a MicroUSB port.

Your Comments Caught My Eye...
You seem to be a very Nice and Thoughtful friend.. To purchased not only 1 of these devices for yourself.. but to gift over $1,200.00 U.S.D. / 985 EURO's to friends to update their devices.. is truly a friend indeed :good:
Since you are obviously a man of means... what brought you to this budget device in the Honor 7X ?
It's certainly not the fastest..
Or.. has the best display...
Or.. the most RAM..
Why not the View 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, One Plus 5T, Pixel, S8, Note 8 ???
What brought a man of your means to the Honor 7X.. I'm really curious to know if you don't mind sharing..
As a software developer I own a plethora of devices and usually carry a minimum of 2 devices. Generally I am very conscious of the condition of my devices and despite the fact the majority of them never leave an office environment, they are all plastered in screen protectors and cases, it seems like they become more fragile every year. The S8 has been my secondary to my Pixel XL 2 since I got it, but as soon as I received the Honor 7X I put the S8 in the drawer. The 7X runs naked and I'm not worried about dropping it. It has enough of what I need. I run package Disabler and remove most of EMUI and Huawei's bloat, with Pixel launcher installed, I have a very close to stock Android on a rugged unit that's as tough as a 90s Nokia!
