[warning] do not use bule's rom(s) - Redmi Note 2 General

Hello XDA,
UPDATE: According to @tripper22's post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69081495&postcount=24
The email app keylogger was found in this rom. http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?s=&sh...ost&p=52869559 The authors are nofearnohappy , LazyC0DEr , Anomalchik and bule according to that post. The rom with the email keylogger has been identified. It does't mean all of Bules roms have keylogger.
This is a warning that should prevent you all from getting hijacked.
As mentioned by @emlo16 already it seems like Bule has malware in his ROMs.

(It's German but based on the symbols (..) you might recognize what is shown)
For myself I have been hijacked while using his ROM and while using his Email app which was a BULE build.
Details to the attackers:
IP Adress: 240e:cc:b:7d2a:24c5:9fab:90a6:3008
Country: CHINA (CN)
Adress: 100 Xian Dao, Tongwei Xian, Dingxi Shi, Gansu Sheng, China
Next day someone tried to access my Google account again.
IP Adress: 39.177.140.63
AGAIN a Chinese adress. Seems like my data got sold.
What I recommend to everyone who used a ROM from BULE:
1) Change ALL of your passwords
2) Enable Two-step verification if possible
3) Share this thread to possible users who use a build from Bule too or warn them.
I hope I was able to help a few of you all. This is just a part that I and others have discovered, there might be even more. Bule could for example also easily sell the data or your IMEI to replica producers.
Keep care of yourself

Thank you for warning everyone Now please @eagleeyetom or other mods pin this thread and everyone reports posts/threads with his roms to mod to delete.

I won't pin this thread for now, but I'll bump it with my post. It's a well-known fact that some ROMs are fishy at the least. I strongly advise users to think before installing everything. This thread should serve a nice warning role.

Thanks for the notice. I an having issues with Daniel ROM and was going to flash Bule CM. Will look for another safe ROM.

My two cents: once you clean off chinese bloatware (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68603820&postcount=16) and check (and eventually delete) for malicious ckservice.apk (http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-2/help/ckservice-apk-malicious-baidu-app-t3325081), Bule's ROMs are ok for safe use: you can monitor 'weird' movements through Wakelock Detector (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector) as well through Amplify (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ryansteckler.nlpunbounce) and Disable Service app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice).
I don't use Email apk, actually it's frozen - I use gmail (with two-step verification).
I'm on Bule's CM 12.1 - 8th August 2016 and after 'the purge' it works perfectly and 'clean', as far as I can check.

I have been using Bule's roms for awhile now. I uninstall all the Chinese apps. I don't use the email app. Like @oldslowdiver I use the gmail app. I scan my phones with an antivirus after every install. Nothing has ever come up with any of Bule's roms and I have tried Mokee, SudaMod, Blisspop and CM. I am currently using CM and it works great. Maybe something is being done before it gets upped to a mirror? I upload exactly what I download of course. A lot of people use his roms. He's supposed to be a respected developer that has done a lot for the RN2. Why would he ruin his reputation by including a malicious app? It just doesn't make sense.
I am no expert. But a lot of people use his roms. If his roms were truly malicious you would be hearing about this kind of thing over and over again, and I am paranoid enough about these kinds of things to begin with.

A better question would be: Why would he do that much work without getting something back? You can easily go ahead and gain trust of people, collect positive reputation and just go ahead and ruin everything.

So the guy who hacked Bule had access to my phone. Seems quite serious.
It was an email build with a custom version from Bule and it was his ROM without any modifications.
Although based on this acknowledge I do not trust him anymore and I just wanted to share my thoughts and the based off others.
"Just clean it" does not mean the ROM is fully cleaned.

You could ask the same question of any hardworking developer. There are many in this forum.
No one else has reported what you have reported. Like I said in my previous post. If Bule was truly a malicious developer trying to steal everybody's Gmail password, everyone else including me would have many warnings from Google. This would be BIG news in this forum.

Indeed nobody reported it yet.
A few reasons could be that the ROM is pretty new and (probably) hasn't been discovered.
But I do not want to spread **** against a developer, as mentioned already, I want to warn other users with the experience I HAD with the new Marshmallow Build and the custom email version Bule offered.

That's fine, and you are absolutely right to share your experience. But unless you compare a checksum of what you have with that inside the ROM, you can never be sure that there has been no interception. Anything is possible in this techie world.

A few people? Who? It's just you so far. Where are these provable facts? To make it a fact you have to provide evidence that proves your assertion. The fact that you were contacted by Google doesn't prove anything. There are many reasons why that could happen. I have been watching to see if anyone claims what you have claimed using Bule's rom. So far nothing.
Did you examine the email app? Have you found anything malicious?

MIUI Rom Source Code?

I have been using MIUI for the past several weeks and was interested in it enough to start looking in helping with development when I get the chance. I was surprised to see that there is no source repository for MIUI. In fact, adding WiMax functionality has required the submission of the cyanogen code to the development team to include in a future update of the rom. The Android OS is released under the GPLv2, which clearly states that you must release the source and license of the original code and that if there are any modifications to that code then you must include the dates of the modifications.
GPLv2: section 2
Code:
2. You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or any portion of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, and copy and distribute such modifications or work under the terms of Section 1 above, provided that you also meet all of these conditions:
a) You must cause the modified files to carry prominent notices stating that you changed the files and the date of any change.
b) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third parties under the terms of this License.
c) If the modified program normally reads commands interactively when run, you must cause it, when started running for such interactive use in the most ordinary way, to print or display an announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a notice that there is no warranty (or else, saying that you provide a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this License. (Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on the Program is not required to print an announcement.)
These requirements apply to the modified work as a whole. If identifiable sections of that work are not derived from the Program, and can be reasonably considered independent and separate works in themselves, then this License, and its terms, do not apply to those sections when you distribute them as separate works. But when you distribute the same sections as part of a whole which is a work based on the Program, the distribution of the whole must be on the terms of this License, whose permissions for other licensees extend to the entire whole, and thus to each and every part regardless of who wrote it.
Thus, it is not the intent of this section to claim rights or contest your rights to work written entirely by you; rather, the intent is to exercise the right to control the distribution of derivative or collective works based on the Program.
In addition, mere aggregation of another work not based on the Program with the Program (or with a work based on the Program) on a volume of a storage or distribution medium does not bring the other work under the scope of this License.
Full license available at http : // www .gnu .org /licenses/gpl-2.0.html.
If there are some parts of the MIUI rom that has been made independent from the Android OS, then those parts who's source is not released under the GPL must be distributed separately, as per section 2 of the GPLv2.
I have looked all over and it I cannot find any of the source for this ROM. This is in clear violation of the license in witch Android is released.
I feel, personally, that if the MIUI developers are not releasing there source then there is now way for the rest of the community that uses it to know for certain that this software is not malice by nature. It would appear that there is a good number of individuals working on this project, judging by which the speed of improvements are being released. What motivation could a team of people be working under when none of them are interested documenting what they are doing to the public at large. This is, in my opinion, a very dangerous mix. Your phone contains the most sensitive data that you have. As such I would expect the developers of MIUI to include the rest of us in the development process not just for the outstanding improvement of having more people work on a project, but to allow the code of something that is at the center of our private information to be reviewed by the people using it. Is there anyone esle that is concerned about this?
good luck getting the miui team to do anything they don't want to do

The MIUI team are from China... remember we as the end user decide what we want to run on our phones. We must take responsibility for our own actions... therefore I have made the choice to run MIUI on my phone.

This is exactly right. If they are in violation of the gpl, then they should not be able to distribute. However, it is possible that they have proprietary code that does not conflict with the gpl.
I don't know which of these is true, though. It sure looks cool, but if they are shirking their responsibility to FOSS then then is a problem.
I am not in disagreement with them having their own proprietary code, but they do need to follow the agreement within the GPL. If you download cyanogen, you have to download gapps separately because gapps has closed source programs. The GPL requires that you leave the open source code open source and the proprietary distributed separately. There are no such repositories containing anything from this rom. I am not into conspiracies or anything, but rules are rules.
Prepare for the same pro SBC trolls to invade your thread.
Yes, it does raise some questions and thank you for bringing the topic up. I don't use that rom but until there is some clarification from the developers, xda or both I will steer clear. Hopefully that kind of response from users like myself will get some movement on the issue.

I think you should sue em man.
What's XDA's official view on GPL violations?
Didn't Feeyo of the Cronos Project get banned from XDA and all his ROM's removed, for GPL violation?
By the way I think Android is on Apache licence, only the kernel is on GPL2, but MIUI team has released kernel sources in the past as far as I know. So I don't know for sure if there is actually a violation here.
Oh boy, here we go again. First SBC, now MIUI. Considering this site promotes rooting phones and voiding warranties, there sure is a ton of hypocricy around here. Go ahead, flame away.
PS. My name is HondaCop and I approve this message.
wow. what asses. your really going to start something?
Btw, it does apply to just the kernel. if not, pretty much every rom needs to be taken down. None of them have a link to source.

How exactly does one "violate" a warranty?
"Voiding" a warranty and violating a license agreement are no where near the same thing.

If you had fundamentally changed the game, I think that would be more acceptable in terms of modding but just ripping out the ads and changing the splash screen isn't what I would describe as modding.
Modding is like creating a new level, replacing the graphics, this is definitely more akin to piracy.

Add me to the list that doesn't agree with this. No offense to you at all, just don't feel its right to take away their income from this app.
If people don't want the ads, they can pay $.99, or they could've just gotten the app while it was free on the amazon appstore.
I'm not sure why you're making this personal, and I don't think you really believe that I misunderstood your post or what modding is.
The problem is, this is exactly the kind of post you would expect to find from a warez forum. A crack to remove ads, and a custom splash screen, and that's it. Just because you call it a mod, doesn't make it so.
Modding is an art form and I highly respect it. You're just not there yet, and you're acting very immature about it. If you make a great game out of this, kudos to you. But in it's current form, what you posted is closer to piracy than modding. Which has nothing to do with something being free or not.
3 posters here have now warned you about it. You might take that as a hint that you should consider thinking it through again. You've also been rude to two of them and thanked the other because you misread his post.
Anyways, I wish you luck in creating a really cool mod eventually -- I really do.
But I don't think it helps anyone for me to continue to reply here, we've said our warnings and the forum moderators will sort the rest.
Also, one last peice of advice, if you're going to put yourself on stage, you should learn to take a bit of criticism without lashing out with personal insults.
Add me to the list that disagrees. Stuff like this is what ruins things for others. Also a determining factor for us getting Netflix they are afraid of what can be changed.

This is my final post about this.... I'm not going to argue I just want to make you understand.
1) I have been a member of this forum since 2008.... so yes, I DO know what this site is, I do know what it's about, and my "view" on this is exactly from an xda-member point of view versus what you state
2) Kudos to you still... to be able to reverse engineer.... but the irony is that what you posted in your reply to me; googling "why is angry birds free" IRONICALLY pretty much states that it's because of the adds on just about any site that you visit from the results.
3) XDA has ALWAYS considered itself to be morally ABOVE warez... what you're posting is border line warez... PERIOD. Rovio has STATED that they've made more money off of ads then they would have ever posting as a paid app. This is why they released seasons, why they released rovio for android, etc... see the pattern? It's because they're making money. It's discouraging for a coder or company to make something for android... the paid apps DO NOT sell as well as for iOS, so they reserve to ads... when money from ads no longer appears, and paid apps don't sell as well... there's no more reason to develop for them for android... then we bit*h about how there aren't enough apps for android..... just try to understand what I'm saying without lashing back. OK?
4) Again, if you're going to post - don't lash out on people that disagree with you, take their criticism and roll with it. Either ignore it or thank them for it.
5) And to the others that say... oh jeez just move on and don't post if you don't like. This isn't exactly the same. Rovio is a company, with legal capabilities, and you don't know how far they're going to go to defend their intellectual property. But seeing as this is the BULK of their business... I'm guessing far. *I KNOW THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY OVERBLOWN SCENARIO* But I don't want the risk of having XDA get shut down because of a cease and desist... Also, regardless of how I fee about this, I'm trying to explain to the OP that he may face legal action against him as well if they wish. He's reverse engineering and modifying intellectual property... and I don't want that happening to any developer at all
Anyway, rant over... just take our heeds and warnings OP. I'm not trying to attack you.... in a way I'm trying to protect you AND XDA.
That is all.... but the more this happens *ads being blocked by modders*, the less development you will see for android by people who do not wish to develop just paid apps. If you're going to develop for *ONE* ecosystem.... iOS is the way you're going to go... their ecosystem has more money flow... that's just a fact... and if revenue from ads is nonexistent, well, you know what will happen. Just take a look at what's happening with root and bootloaders in our community. I guarantee you carriers wouldn't care if they weren't losing money!

the (key west pirate)

if it was a paid app, then not to many people would buy it, and hacking is hacking, no matter what it is, i have hacked open just about all the apps, a lot more then just a 1.00 app, it is just a an app, try a lot harder things then that
i love it with no (adds)
the adds are a pain in the ass, cover part of the game in one version of it , not very nice
and programmer that wrote it is getting payed by a company to write the app

mr. dreamer..... i think you should not be on this site if u feel that modding or changing things is a crime.. here we ripp appart apps from a device and make it available for all the other device .. we make custom roms here which in fact improves the overall performance of the device ..due to which we dont change the device for a long time , which in turn is not a good thing for the manufacturers...
so if u think what this guy has done .. u should stop using custom roms and also stop tweaking ur device ..cozz if you want to get more out of ur device.. you can buy a more better version of device rather than tweaking it..
this community is all about tweaking and getting more from the existing .. may it be apps or firmware..
people have also tweaked the google maps and navigation to make it free for everyone.. so you were nowhere to be seen there..
there is an app called add free.. which every rom devloper includes in his roms
and i m sure u might be using a lot of these roms.. so u should stop using this forum..
i totally support this guy cozz.. he has just tweaked a free app...
if this thread would be taken down then then the purpose of having such a great forum wouldnt be the same...
these are the poll results for u.

and if u are saying "in a way I'm trying to protect you AND XDA".. get a life dude.. if you want to do any favor for us .. just get your ass out of this forum that would be the biggest favor
I use Adfree, the ads are gone already. I wonder if these guys bash the creator of that app or even worse, use it themselves. Oh the irony...
But it all depends on who you are and what you have contributed to xda, because the impaler released the same thing for angry birds, I don't remember anyone criticizing him for it.

Help our Community - stop akaskriller - #NeverAgain Rd. 2 ** 1:30 AM EST

Very important:
Respect the rules of XDA.. post like you thought about it, not out of rage.
I do not want to promote/help this guy.
There is a fine line between this and simply informing people.
I think the latter is worth the risk.
OP was cleaned up since its getting so much attention now
5/17/11 synopsis:
The Android Community rallied. A lot was accomplished. But, we haven't succeeded.
Make Wednesday even better. Tweet, write articles and submit them to sites, post on facebook, just do something.
Site was/is down... but because he took it down for maintenance. Not his ISP shutting him down.
ARTICLES PUBLISHED FROM OUR EFFORTS (And growing....):
UncutAndroid published it first, they tell it how it is and let users speak their mind.
AndoidSPIN Much respect for them too!
Voice Of Android Found me a new site!
RESULTS?!?!
His site is currently down...
Our developers (some who have not been around in a long time) and some who used to feud are ALL working together
and of course the below work...
Thanks to the community and XDA user andyharney we have ("You are" is directed at akaskriller, obviously):
You are in breach of Apache Software License Version 2 & GNU General Public License Version 2.
You are in breach of your AdSense account by hosting copyrighted material, you have been reported
You have been reported to Gameloft for hosting their pirated/warez apps, they have notified their legal dept.
You have been reported to your web host for hosting & distributing pirated/warez apps.
You have been reported to Paypal for profiteering off pirated/warez apps.

WAIT, WHAT'S GOING DOWN?
Recently in one of my guides, a user who apparently did not understand the intent of the thread, starting going off on me that my thread should be deleted... and started singing the praises of AkaSkriller. I thought this guy was a thing of the past. Nope, he has only gotten bigger.
Most people know this guy is a Fraud... he takes the work of our developers (roms, themes, free/paid apps and posts it on his site... behind a $5 donate wall ( $5/month for ACCESS to others work ).
Read some of the below posts where developers have already posted conversations with this guy.... it's sad panda time here.
Not enough, read the lashing he took trying to "apologize" *fake/lying*
Master (Axura ROM) stated that he spoke with AkaSkriller about removing his ROM and he was told he would simply edit the build.prop as to be a different ROM... as if by editing this, it was somehow no longer Master's work!! Since then, there are just more developers supporting this....
This outraged me. I truly respect ALL of our developers, and this is just ONE example of probably 100's where this guy and his site have taken advantage of those in our community who are NOT familiar.
Sooooo........
I propose we do ANOTHER #NeverAgain Twitter campaign where we send out tweets telling people to not use this guys site... we inform people the $5 "donate" for access to files is absurd... and we try and point people to sites like XDA!
A place where we are truly geared to helping our developers/community
(not to make money off noobs).
Here is his site. I only link to it so you can see just how absurd it is. DO NOT give this guy any of your money.
ACTION:
Send out a tweet about it...
Post on your Facebook about it....
Email or send a tweet to other Android sites and ask them to tweet about it....
Sample Tweet (copy and paste if you like):
Sites requiring a donation for access to others work is wrong. Read this: http://goo.gl/l7vSO
I realize some of you think this is crazy/pointless. But it bothers me to have an element like that in a community I really do love.
And yes, I have a "Donate to Me" button. Only because someone volunteered to give me a donation before I had a link.
I've received MAYBE $30... imagine how much I could make on a site like that (near 600 thanks and I am NOT a developer)!
lets play the "I see $5 this many times" game... Maybe just a "thanks button" would work? Nagh, lets make a whole section.

Edit: I found his real name (David Barkley) and his Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/akamilkweed?sk=wall) if anyone wants to go an evil route, use social engineering, etc to screw with him outside of the internet as revenge.
Good stuff. I may need to edit the title. I don't want to HURT him, more just want to prevent people new to Android/unfamiliar to think what he is doing is acceptable.
Posting on social media its a great tool, inc twitter/facebook/youtube, etc
I have asked popular android blogs to write about it today, here is hoping they care about the community as much as I do.
I'm on board, for no other reason than he charges for people to be able to get to his DL section to get his kanged and stolen roms. That, asking for payment, as per the Apache Open Source Licensing agreement that binds all Android OS builds, is absolutely illegal.
Edit - posted to my facebook, I was emailing with an admin on AndroidSpin yesterday, going to email him now and see if he will get this posted on AndroidSpin
Edit - AndroidSpin admin emailed
Here is some of what he has said to me via email in the past.
"you have put my life and my family life in danger" (How exactly would I have done that..?)
"my post have been change and now ill just really right all the roms u post and make them mine"
..and when I asked him to take the pirated apps off of his site he replied.
"sir thos are all app that are in 4share.com so go bug them ok
your mean"
"dude calm down hater"
I m on board I looked around on his website........... he is just copying other people stuff...........
These type of guys .....they are like weeds in my yard. Always popping up.
Remember all the hurt and problems He will now have are a result of his actions not ours.

He could use some lessons in grammar and syntax as well..........
Youtube account
I posted this message on his Youtube subscription page:
"All this guy does is STEAL other developer's work and put it behind a paywall. Don't believe me? Go to XDA forums and find all these ROMs and support for FREE!!!"
It may get deleted, but if everyone on here does the same, it will warn all the noobs that something is up.
I've reached my Thanks limit.. but truly grateful. I feel with enough social media effort we can really help.
For those not familar, my first #NeverAgain campaign was against Samsung.... shortly after, I received calls from them, they were following me on twitter and VERY soon after Froyo was given to us via kies.
my point? To my surprise, it really did work in my opinion (and others).

He does that on purpose. I've also had email conversations with him in the past when the first round of threads started about him. He pretends to not speak very good English. But just have a listen to his video, he seems to speak pretty good English in fact.
He will pretend to be a nice guy. Months ago during our email conversation, I talked him into making an apology thread here, which he did. I told him no one is trying to hurt him, Devs just want their credit.
This is the best thing we can do, just warn any new commers to not go and get robbed $5 a month for his stolen ROMS.

I hope so, this guy, who blatantly ignores the Licensing laws, seriously gets me out of my ZenDroid, and makes me /rage. I think if we can make this a big enough issue, something may be done by people more powerful than us, like Google who actually releases the software under the Apache Licensing terms. I know thats thinking on a grand scale, but its obvious this guy won't listen to us.

Yes it does and thank you for the catch and noticing this bad behavior so we all could help arresting it.
.....
I just submitted this to UncutAndroid:
I love Android. I love the Community.
Since my G1 days I have slowly evolved from total noob, to someone who helps answer questions daily on XDA, writing instructional guides, and now testing the waters in app development and theming. The reason I have progressed is the kindness of the community. Every themer/developer I have ever contacted has been so incredibly gracious with their time and sharing their talent. I truly respect these people – and you should too.
I say this so bluntly only because it’s that passion that fuels the article.
There are also many bad elements to the Android Community. The most notable in my opinion are the 3rd party paid app sites AND sites like www.akaskriller.com. I want to focus on the latter, but feel the need to point out those 3rd party app sites give you “free” paid apps, but they also give you App Permissions not requested by the original app – they are malicious.
Please do not be a self-inflicted victim over $0.99. You are on this site, you are smarter than that.
Back to my real intent here. For those not familiar, akaskriller is a site that has a nice front – and that is what it is, a front. They appear to be very genuine and caring, they act like they are helping developers, and they act like they want to help the Android noob.
Nothing could be further from the truth. They want money – money for others work.
Sites that offer others work (ROMs & Themes) behind a $5 donate wall (yes, you pay to get access) are wrong people. Not just wrong for those new to Android – those who genuinely need help and do not know better. But more importantly, it is wrong for the developers who work so hard to improve our phones, at no cost to us.
I am no expert on Apache/Licensing but I would have to assume paying/donating $5 for free software is wrong on a larger scale than I know how to address.
Those familiar with the Samsung Vibrant may recall a movement I suggested. It was called “#NeverAgain Samsung.” I proposed a social media blitz where we told Samsung on Twitter, blogs, Facebook and YouTube that we would not continue to buy their products if they would treat the Android Community the way they did – withholding updates and source.
Shortly after the movement started (and it grew FAST), I received calls from Samsung and they were following me on twitter Froyo and source was given to us via Kies. Perhaps due to our combined community efforts.
I am suggesting we have another outcry - an outcry that our community will not tolerate this. Let the community know this is wrong. I will not be formal and say “do this,” but do something.
Tweet about it, post on Facebook… heck, just tell a developer you appreciate them.
Since mentioning the idea of one developer has told me when he requested his ROM be removed from the site, he was told that they would simply change the build.prop so it was a “new ROM.” Taking away the work this developer did and making it their own.
This is wrong. Do something.

Thank you all for informing us of this situation. It really makes me mad to see someone take what someone else has worked so hard on, and try and make it there "own". I really appreciate all the hard work our dev's do, and donate and pay for apps.
Have posted on Twitter.

IS the dashboard hijacking our texts?

I downloaded the app "Servicely" and it can disable services and apps to prolong your battery and what not, well i opened it up to take a look and i was going through each apps running services.. Not all mind you as there are a ton but i was scrolling down through OnePlus 6T dashboard app and one of the services was ".mms.SmsHijackerService" .
This of course grabbed my attention. Does anybody know what this is and is a lot more Innocent then what it looks like? I also read something earlier tonight about One plus does steal info behind users backs...not sure if it was a BS article or if out had some truth to it ( sure everything has truth to it) . So after reading that then seeing this i was like WTF. Are my texts being hijacked and sent to them. There was a few other ones with names that at least if they are what i think they are, they hid the name better. I have a screen shot here not sure if i

I am on 9.0.11 , so it doesn't go away in an update ha ha not that i thought it would. Seems shady but also why on earth would they name it something that seems shady....... I am going to try to install this sms reader module i read about, it logs all data & sms that leave your phone. Find out if any leave that A) i didn't write & B) go somewhere i didn't send...hopefully the app can tell me that..... if it turns out not , Do you or anybody know of an app that can do that ? I think that would solve all my paranoia that every app i have is sending out my information.

Hmmm... don't want to start drama as I'm sure you didn't intend to, but I'm one of those "paranoid" or conscious as I prefer.
I'm huge on keeping up with geopolitics and some of us should really research the history of China, and I don't mean reading modern, watered-down history literature. China's CCP is the biggest and most vast "Big Brother" in the world except for intelligence in the US/Europe. Not only that, but they are VERY open about the intrusion of privacy amongst it's own people along with the current controversy on China's LONG history of Intellectual Property theft. Read anything re: China's (state owned and funded) Huawei these days (also, notice Huawei's focus on high quality cameras.. eyes everywhere), I will never own anything they produce and I'm sad to say I may be skeptical of this phone now, sadly. And here's a fun-fact.... I'm a Chinese-American, no joke lol
This is very concerning and I think these questions should continue to be asked higher up. I will definitely research this and watch this thread closely.
Please post any finding on it's nature and update us on if we can remove/block the apk. I will do some testing after work.

that's fine, and being "conscious" is always appropriate in dealing with all things internet..
however, it always makes me chuckle how so many folks are super paranoid of their privacy being invaded, yet they spend half their lives on faceschnook, tweeter, Snapchat, "the gram" and on and on, plus, as I am sure you already know that once you have an email account, an internet plan, a cell phone, a credit card, a car payment, what ever, you can pretty much kiss any semblance of personal privacy goodbye..

You are giving alot assumptions (? ) about me when you don't even know me. I don't have half those things you listed and if I did or if anybody did that automatically takes their right to privacy away? I will always be concerned with that and as I do agree you can't stop it all as everything you have is tied to you in some digital public way, it does not mean we should just give up... That's your choice not mine. But let's get back to the original topic... As this is what this site is for. If you want to argue the topics hipocricy and all that good stuff (because I gladly will) we can do that else where.
I never made ONE SINGLE assumption about you, so no pity party for you..
and, you said I "gave up"..where EXACTLY did I say that?
you cant make stuff up to fit your narrative dude, so dont try..
even XDA hides tracking cookies on your devices, so deal with it..
and, please show me where it says we have a "right" to privacy...

I will keep researching as it has peaked my curiosity. By the way I agree with you. As I can't take it as far as not owning anything made in China as I find that impossible I do limit it where ever I can. And Mr. Tinfoil hat isn't entirely wrong in stating if you have email. Etc then your privacy has been invaded, if everybody read and understood the fine print in every app alone they download, I bet they would think twice. Google freaking owns us and everything we create... You give it to them the min you agree and download this or that... It's sad really.

Why not at least just directly refer users to the source? For context, I appreciate the fact that it is being offered to the community. Thank you, and the others behind the effort, for that. Just trying to see if there might be a better way than asking people for $125 or whatever the latest asking price is, for what amounts to getting info from the parent company, or modifying samsungs software.
Issues apparent at the moment:
1) The identity of the group (not individual names, just who the group is, past efforts and in what communities, reputation of the group demonstrated by evidence) is not known to the community. Im in the telegram group, I know what yall do.
2) Users are being asked for money via what is stated to be a middleman. Are the people running the Telegram group the ones doing the bootloader unlocks? Transparency is key here. Users are giving items of tangible value (currency) to what appears to be a "man in the shadows." Whats the entire chain of events from payment to completion? I know the unlock process it outlined. I mean including the sources, the methods, how it goes from them, to you, to us.
3) Who ends up getting the money? Is it shared? All to them? All to you? Id much prefer the group behind the actual unlock source be the ones who get the money. Its up to them how they split it after.
$125 is nothing, as I bought a Note 20. I didnt buy the Ultra because the extra features just arent necessary to me. So, not that you would Afaneh, but to anyone who sees/responds to this, dont play the "youre too broke" game. I could probably buy the unlock for most if not all of the XDA Note 20/Ultra forum userbase.

Asking someone to come off the idea of charging users for a bootloader unlock that is clearly available, and must have come from 1) modifications to copyrighted software or 2) the parent company, is not the same as asking the parent company to give me the phone for free. You have no idea what you are talking about. Only potential costs are "labor" which is nebulous at best because for labor costs you have to be doing an actual job.

Let me say If you got 20-30% of that price, is that can cover your work, time or even after unlock support? like helping them rooting, having a good kernel base and TWRP, ROMs, etc.
If that mean "selling" for you, Its mean "offering unlock" for us.

Maybe the source is Samsung and its a service they charge for and this service from Samsung is only available in certain markets. Maybe the person doing this risk getting fired if caught doing phones outside of said markets

If youre putting it towards efforts for other development, to assist in giving the device a presence in the root community, then certainly, I hope you get what you need out of it.
All im trying to do here, is figure out how this all boils down at its roots. I dont think youre doing anything improper, I just dont see enough information on this "source" to know what exactly is going on with them specifically.

There we go. I wasnt sure but had suspected something like this might be the case. As, there have been a number of private parties who have gotten their hands on such things in the past. I understand youre not specifically claiming this (least thats my perception from your wording) but it is a more than plausible explanation. However, the need for transparency here doesnt change. This whole process goes from XDA, to Telegram, to Teamspeak. With who knows who and what in between those steps and behind the scenes in general. I understand I can choose to just not buy the unlock if I am that concerned. That doesnt mean that other peoples personal info from the transactions, for example, is "safe."
Ive been doing cybersecurity for years. Last thing Id want to see is someone who means well (Afaneh) ending up involved in an accidental scandal. Not that one is present, but how is the community supposed to know with all the privacy?

1. What? All the people in the group that help to provide unlock option are well known devs to the community including myself whom is the only one who even provided root options for s8 s8+ (twice) n8, s9 s9+ n9 over last few years. Been on XDA a decade now. This of course is just me, others have years of contributions as well. so not sure what you mean by being unknown to the community.
2. A middle man, reseller, call it what you will. Fact is I have spent years developing relationships with various "sources" whom I trust and whom trust me. If source is not willing to deal in US market and me being a friend who is trustworthy makes a deal with said source that he only deals with me to allow me to offer said service in the usa market based on fact that people go through me then I am more than willing to do so since if I wasnt a "middleman" then it wouldnt even be an option for anyone. Also, if you ever do find a way into the group I am very transparent as to the process from start to finish. Just because source doesnt want to deal in usa market unless it goes through me doesnt make any difference. Fact is people are dealing with ME, not the source and I definitely am not hidingvin the shadows as you would think. lol.
3. Who gets the money? obviously its a paid service so of course money goes to the person actually doing the unlock. There are some fees of course to process payments and conversion and taxes etc. but essentially all the money goes to source to unlock device. There is basically an agreed price from source then w.e they want to allow for us to have is what we get but i guarantee you its not lucrative by any means for us doing the unlocks, i cant quit my day job or anything lol. but that being said, source obviously doesnt want me working on their behalf for free as well as it wouldnt make sense for me to do so considering all the requests and having to spend hours daily to help facilitate the process is very demanding time wise.
to add, xda doesnt allow paid services to be discussed so any issues u have u can send via pm or join grpup if u can find a link or pm me on said chat application.
The service is available, i provide as much details as i can (that i have myself really) and ultimately its no get rich quick scheme nor do i try to pursuade anyone to do anything so its ultimately up to the user if they want to go through with it. In fact for someone with questions/concerns such as yourself I actually say do not unlock your device. I know I wouldnt if I had concerns and dont suggest anyone else does especially if I cant answer all your questions.
That being said, is exactly why xda doesnt allow these types of services on xda lol.

Well, the main way it was expressed is "its from a source." Didnt tell me much, but it looks like the dots are connected now.
The potential concern was information privacy and what may or may not be done with said info. Im aware of the XDA rule about paid services. On one hand, it is obviously understandable why the disconnect between the forum and outside group exists. On the other, it creates a layer of "unknown ground." However, you have come out publicly and spoken. As well, your profile matches the name of one of the members who run the group. As far as Im concerned, thats about as good of verification of positive standing with the community that can be gotten in the circumstances. I wasnt trying to say yall werent legit, just trying to put the pieces together for the people who might not be sure. Hopefully you get more requests this way. As, I would like such a high-end phone to have a root/ROM presence. I still have my original Note 4, and have enjoyed the custom utility I get from this community.

I didnt say there was. The information was regarding potential issues that can arise from an issue that has a multi-layered disconnect from the original platform. However, the information as it stands, has been made public. So, issue resolved as far as Im concerned. Im not scared of it, I was just curious because of the seeming disconnect between the forum presence and the outside chat group. The information is now easily referenced by any community member, so there's no other concern to be noted.
New build up!
