Android N notification sound bug - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, have you guys encountered this weird behaviour?
I do get the notifications. But the sound doesn't play sometimes, sometimes it plays like for 0.5 seconds. Other times it works fine.
Both my Nexus 6P and my friend's 5X has this happened, both are upgraded to Android N.
Is this a common bug?

Got same issue. Noticed no sound but had a couple texts. Definitely would have heard them. In the same room...wtf.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app

Can confirm this happens to me to, it will play the sound and cut off half way through, rather annoying ????

I have the same bug on N, some times notification sound plays completely but some times plays like a half of the full sound
Enviado desde mi Nexus 6P mediante Tapatalk

Same. This release is disappointing. This notification issue is annoying. Also getting delayed notifications in general. Battery life is worse on Nougat also.

Same problem here since DP4. The new october update hasn't even fixed this.
For me the problem doesn't affect Phone ringtone or hangouts message ringtones.
Whatsapp group notifications are almost always affected.
Hangouts calls and calls via hangouts dialer never even ring.
I've tried changing the default notification tone, individual tones from within the apps and nothing has fixed the problem.
I've even done a clean wipe and the problem seems to be okay for a day and then the whole thing completely breaks and never fixes itself. Clearing cache doesn't even do anything.
I'd like to know if someone isn't being affected by this, because this is a huge issue.
edit: running stock, no root, no apps intercepting notifications.
edit 2: this not only affects notification sound, but if you have vibrations on it will also cut off the accompanying vibration short.

So glad to see other's having this issue. I thought I was just going crazy. I've had the same issue, but I just chalked it up to me not paying attention, but never had the issue in the past (before nougat update). I've been thinking more and more about downgrading to marshmallow; so far the issues outweigh the benefits of the update (I really like responding to texts, facebook, etc from the notification shade).

Same problem here...and like cheeseshake said it comes from N DP4 and it happens when I receive 2 or more messages simultaneously

My annoying bug is when I pull down notification and select clear all and then a few seconds later I hear the notification sound. That is freaking annoying!!!

I still have this annoying problem.
When I get the notification/call the sound starts to play but then stops for about 0.5 seconds and then it continues. Other times it works fine.
It's really annoying!
Have you guys done something to fix this?
Does everyone on 7.0 encounter this? Or just a few? I haven't done a factory reset but I have cleared cache in recovery but it didn't help.

I am guessing that everyone using stock 7.0 rom encounters it, but they just haven't noticed it yet.

Maybe you are right. I guess I wait with a factory reset until I get the next update. Hopefully Google fix it.

That's weird.
Never happened on marshmallow (I have had 6p since December 2015).
Let's hope they fix this soon.

My wife phone has the same problem. her phone also has no sound: no ring on incoming call, no sound from youtube. I need to restart the phone to have the sound back, but for 1 or 2 days, the problem happens again.

Same here. I kept checking to see if notification sounds were on and they always were. Now I know that it seems to be a problem for many and not just me. 7.1.1 NPF10C

I have never had this issue until using the 6P on 7.0, but I have noticed a partial notification multiple times with Messenger. Definitely going to report it to Google; hopefully they will get on it soon, seeing it seems to be a widespread issue.

I think the 4.2.1 Update Broke My Phone

For an update that was supposedly only for fixing the missing December bug, I seem to have a lot of problems because of it.
First and foremost is a weird lag when turning on the screen. You can tell its on but it will remain blank for a few moments before anything shows unlike before where it was basically instantaneous.
Second and most annoying is a weird duplicate message thing with my SMS. I keep getting random duplicate messages from SMS' that I've received after the update. They come anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes apart. Also the lockscreen widget for messages only occasionally shows updates.
Last and could just be because it is a newer version, is that light flow stopped working.
Has anyone had any problems with the 4.2.1 update?
More importantly, what can I do about it?
Ota just showed up on mine i think iam gonna hold off for now till light flow is back on thx for the head up

I updated and have yet to run into any issues.
Sounds like your having a wake lock issue if the screen is staying blank when you power on your phone.
That's interesting, I also have the duplicate message issue with Voice through the native Messaging app. I assumed it was something else.

Try a factory reset and see if that fixes it

Yeah that sounds about right. I really don't understand where these issues are coming from. The phone worked perfectly before it.
The update fixed a few bugs, not just the December issue. I have updated my nexus 7 and my nexus 4 and I am not seeing any duplicate messages or any other problems either.
Perhaps this is because of another app.. I don't even think they updated the messenger at all from 4.2 to 4.2.1.

The only thing that has changed is the update to 4.2.1. I don't see how anything else could be the cause.
My phone is still stock, no custom rom, but it is rooted. I flashed a custom recovery and other than that haven't done anything to the phone that isn't official.
Okay, I thought the issues had tapered off. For what reason I have no idea, but I have no idea why they showed up anyways so it evens out.
But the duplicate message thing started up again.
If the 4.2.1 update is not to blame, what could cause repeat messages being received? If it is somehow the update, what could cause repeat messages being received?
Try a factory reset. Its always good to factory reset after updates no matter what. Find an app to save your data first.
Sent from my Nexus 4
Yeah my N4 was rock solid before 4.2.1..no reboots, glitches, bugs! Well now after 4.2.1 I've had several random reboots (one where I had to force it into the bootloader for it to start up) and this morning I had a weird graphical glitch where when rebooting the Google logo got stuck on the screen with some weird bands. It was like the google splash screen got stuck. I had to shut the screen off and turn it on and then it was fine.
I think I'm going to give a factory restore a try soon.
Year just factory reset. Its a habit for me because of the gs2. Always good to start fresh.
Sent from my Nexus 4
Is there a way to go back to 4.2? Not the 4.2.1?
I can't call anymore after updating to 4.2.1... there is no sound on outgoing calls. I can receive incoming calls however.

Ringer delay? [SOLVED]

Hi guys!
I seem to be the only guy with an Android phone in 2015 having problems with a substantial delay before my phone starts ringing when receiving a call.
I have an application that checks incoming phone numbers (that are not present in my Contacts) and displays a splash screen pretty immediately but the person making the call usually hears about 3-4 tones before my phone starts ringing. Does anyone know how to fix this problem because a lot of callers get the satisfaction of saying "you asleep?" constantly when calling me in the morning.
I have an unrooted i9505 running official Android 5.0.1
PS: The workaround to extend the time before it goes to voice mail is decent but I'd like to get this solved instead.
Many thanks and best regards,

That app is causing the delay.

I tried uninstalling the app and experience no change, I'm afraid.

Thats strange. I haven't heard anyone about a similar issue, so I assumed it was because of that app.
I would then suggest backing up and performing a factory reset. I think that will be the easiest and the fastest method.

Yeah, the app causing the problem would have been almost too easy. I'll gather courage to perform a factory reset and let you know.

Back after a reset now (I really hate doing them)
The delay is still there though. It MIGHT have been a little better though, between the 2nd and 3rd signal my phone started ringing.
Anymore ideas?

Some more observations: any music player or etc seems to stop pretty much immediately when another person calls. Then there is a couple of seconds of silence before the phone shows the call and it starts ringing. It's like the phone knows it's getting a call but is having problems telling me about it...

Do you have the same problem with another sim? Sometimes strange problems are due to sim card or sd cards. You can also try that.

Thanks for the tip. I could always try and remove my SD-card but I have no spare SIM-card to try with.
Regards,
Hi,
Try to look into your build.prop if there is a value for ro.telephony.call_ring.delay
If yes, change value to 0
If not, add this line at the end of build.prop :
ro.telephony.call_ring.delay=0
Save and reboot.
Hello edzamber and thanks for the tip!
I added the line as it was nowhere to be found and rebooted.
Still 3-4 tones before my damn phone cares to start ringing...
I tried setting the value to 1 instead and now it seems to ring after 2-3 tones. Not sure if the build.prop-editing caused that, though...
It seems I solved this!
Not exactly which action of the following that did the trick but I went to Settings > More > Application Manager and cleared the Data for all three(!?) instances of the Dialer-app. In addition, I cleared the call log directly from within the Dialer-application (420 records).
Now my phone lights up pretty much instantly when I call it from another phone!

Continuous notification problem

My wife and I both have a 6p. She is running the latest lineageos and I've got Resurection's latest rom. Both of our phones have the same problem. The notification tone will randomly go off continuously for 30+ seconds and when unlocking the phone and checking, there are no new notifications. I've had the problem on lineage, stock, resurrection and weta roms. I've spend days searching xda without any luck. Is anybody else having this issue or know of a cure?

It's odd to be sure, especially since you say you can reproduce on both phones running the stock ROM. I've never heard of it. Emergency alerts maybe? Which carrier?
Try disabling NFC under Settings--> More.

We use straight talk service with Verizon SIM. I thought along the same lines but they both do it at different times. I was in a meeting yesterday and it started going off and then later in the evening hers went off in the middle of a movie. I don't even know where to begin to start to figure out the cause of it. It's not deal breaker, just annoying.

Turn off emergency alerts, and flash one back to stock? Never heard of a similar issue.
I'm having similar issues with notifications sounds too. I get one notification, check it, turn screen off, and not getting any sound for 30/60 secs, even if one or more notification arrives ( I can see it from the led notification).
Really wierd... I'm running s-aosp but I don't think the ROM is to blame. Maybe aggressive doze from greenify or maybe a Google play services bug, I noticed that removing some permission of play services caused delay in notifications, never noticed it till a week ago and then I started noticing it continuosly...

I've been thinking of going back to stock anyways because of the rumor off fingerprint gestures in the new beta update so maybe I'll try it again and see what happens.

Make sure it's not a Bluetooth request. I found that when you reset your phone your Bluetooth devices still try to request to connect. Just a thought may be reconnect to all of your Bluetooth devices

Happens when Bluetooth is turned off and no Bluetooth devices are closeby. I suspect if it's an app running in background causing the vibration but there are no notifications visible at all.
Same here. I think it's the download app because I randomly received a download notification on ambient display from an old download. Cleared data and cache of that app and haven't had any issues since then.
No Problem here.
Same here. No bt on.
It looks like a Pie bug.
I have the same on my OP6T and Nexus 6P running Pie
This happened for me at midnight once. When I checked my notification log I saw that some of the notifications now had 12:00am for their time kinda like it remade the notification at that time. I only saw this happen once when I was on OOS 9.0.5 and have not seen it since upgrading to OOS 9.0.6.
Try clearing download app data and cache. Haven't had a any issue since I was given that tip.
What fixed it for me was turning off download notifications in Google Chrome, haven't had a random vibrate since.

Question Problems with some notifications

I'm trying to work out if this is a 'just me' problem or something that's affecting more people but has gone unnoticed yet...
Some of my notifications (in particular missed calls, sms, voicemail and WhatsApp messages) seem to be significantly delayed - they may not come through as a notification for hours. My record is 13 hours for a missed call notification. Meanwhile, I also sometimes get a glyph notification when there's nothing new in my notifications - I'm starting to wonder if these are actually real notifications that don't make it through to the notification screen for some reason.
A reboot of the phone fixes the issue immediately but it returns at a yet to be determined interval.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Loving the phone but the OS feels a little Alpha / Beta right now.
There was like few seconds delay when I was on OS v1.0.2 but after v1.1.0 haven't faced any such notification delay issue.
