I think the 4.2.1 Update Broke My Phone - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For an update that was supposedly only for fixing the missing December bug, I seem to have a lot of problems because of it.
First and foremost is a weird lag when turning on the screen. You can tell its on but it will remain blank for a few moments before anything shows unlike before where it was basically instantaneous.
Second and most annoying is a weird duplicate message thing with my SMS. I keep getting random duplicate messages from SMS' that I've received after the update. They come anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes apart. Also the lockscreen widget for messages only occasionally shows updates.
Last and could just be because it is a newer version, is that light flow stopped working.
Has anyone had any problems with the 4.2.1 update?
More importantly, what can I do about it?

Ota just showed up on mine i think iam gonna hold off for now till light flow is back on thx for the head up

I updated and have yet to run into any issues.
Sounds like your having a wake lock issue if the screen is staying blank when you power on your phone.

That's interesting, I also have the duplicate message issue with Voice through the native Messaging app. I assumed it was something else.

Try a factory reset and see if that fixes it

Yeah that sounds about right. I really don't understand where these issues are coming from. The phone worked perfectly before it.

The update fixed a few bugs, not just the December issue. I have updated my nexus 7 and my nexus 4 and I am not seeing any duplicate messages or any other problems either.
Perhaps this is because of another app.. I don't even think they updated the messenger at all from 4.2 to 4.2.1.

The only thing that has changed is the update to 4.2.1. I don't see how anything else could be the cause.
My phone is still stock, no custom rom, but it is rooted. I flashed a custom recovery and other than that haven't done anything to the phone that isn't official.

Okay, I thought the issues had tapered off. For what reason I have no idea, but I have no idea why they showed up anyways so it evens out.
But the duplicate message thing started up again.
If the 4.2.1 update is not to blame, what could cause repeat messages being received? If it is somehow the update, what could cause repeat messages being received?

Try a factory reset. Its always good to factory reset after updates no matter what. Find an app to save your data first.
Sent from my Nexus 4

Yeah my N4 was rock solid before 4.2.1..no reboots, glitches, bugs! Well now after 4.2.1 I've had several random reboots (one where I had to force it into the bootloader for it to start up) and this morning I had a weird graphical glitch where when rebooting the Google logo got stuck on the screen with some weird bands. It was like the google splash screen got stuck. I had to shut the screen off and turn it on and then it was fine.
I think I'm going to give a factory restore a try soon.

Year just factory reset. Its a habit for me because of the gs2. Always good to start fresh.
Sent from my Nexus 4

Is there a way to go back to 4.2? Not the 4.2.1?

I can't call anymore after updating to 4.2.1... there is no sound on outgoing calls. I can receive incoming calls however.

[Q] Losing google sync on Wifi

Hello all,
Quick question. Is anyone losing Google Sync / Data when on Wifi ?
Happens at home and work. Never had an issue with my GS3 or One X. On cell service it works fine.
update 11/24
Seems as though its a pretty widespread issue. Also , it is an issue with the connection it self, not just google sync.
I opened up a "google issue" , if you are having the same problems I recommend posting on the thread. It can be found here:

I have the exact same problem. But it only happens at home. At home we've wep and at work wpa2. Never had an issue with my GS2. On cell service it works fine for me too.
Is android 4.2 incompatible with 128-bit WEP???
This is driving me nuts! Any ideas community??

I've noticed this too but seems to only be when the phone is sleeping? I'll turn screen on and bars will be gray and then turn blue. Did you guys turning off wifi optimization in wifi settings? I might try that next. It's some sort of power saving

hey guys,
I actually put in a google issue that seems to be picking up some steam.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065
I have no clue what causes it at this point. It doesnt happen on all networks. Happens on my work network which is open / unsecured.
Also does it on my inlaws network which is wpa2 encrypted. However my home network which is also wpa2 encrypted is fine.
I recommend posting on the google issue to raise awareness
I added my experience, it seems to me like it's keeping wifi alive but not the Google connection. I have no issues on a Nexus 7 running 4.2 so it's not my router either but could be something specific to Nexus 4 hardware. I might try changing wifi sleep policy to never to see if at least this way HSPA will be connected when screen is off.

Anybody not having this issue? It's really annoying and for some reason even if I set wifi to stay on when plugged in or never it takes forever to disconnect so I still don't get alerts. Definitely appears to be an issue with 4.2 so i guess we just have to wait and hope it is fixed in next update.

It's happening to me both with my N4 on 4.2 and also with my Transformer Prime, recently updated to 4.1.1. Only on specific networks.

It actually happens to me on both new Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Happens on home network (WPA2).
Any chance this could be a Google server issue? My Nexus 7 on 4.2 and GS3 running CM10 4.1.2 doesn't have issue either just my Nexus 4. Not sure what's causing it on my Nexus 4 but it's driving me crazy.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I'm pretty sure this is a general Wifi issue, and not limited to Google services. I've noticed that when the Wifi goes to sleep, I no longer receive incoming calls in GrooveIP or Sipdroid. I also don't receive email alerts until I turn on the screen, and the wifi re-activates.
EDIT: I ran a simple test. Loaded GrooveIP, called GV # from another phone, GrooveIP rang. Let the phone sit for 10 minutes to fall asleep. Called again. Didn't ring. I then loaded up Advanced Wifi Lock to prevent the phone from going asleep. The first call worked, and so did the one after 10 minutes. So, this definitely seems like an issue that impacts any service depends on a reliable Wifi link - not just Google's Sync services. I ran the same test with Sipdroid, and got identical results.

That's a bad example because GrooveIP uses GTalk on the backend so you're still using Google Services. What makes this more puzzling is I went to a Brooklyn Nets game last night and they have crazy fast open WiFi at the place while my phone was connected, it appears that all notifications worked even when the screen was off. I was too busy watching the game to pay much attention but I did get emails, etc. while the screen was off and I was on Wifi. The main difference between that WiFi and my home Wifi is the one at the arena had no security at all.
I've been playing around with my router and tweaking settings but nothing is working and I'm pretty sure this is a phone software issue. What I want to find is someone with 4.2 on a Nexus 4 who is NOT having an issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is an app or Google Service sync related issue.
My Nexus 7 running 4.2 does NOT have any issue on the same exact Wifi so I'm wondering if it's some app or setting on my phone that's causing this
For me it definitely seems to occur more on unsecured networks.
Not only is it google sync but the connection in general.
Anybody with this issue brave enough to try a factory reset? If it doesn't get solved soon I'll probably flash CWM recovery, do a nandroid and then do a factory reset to see if that fixes it. At least that way if it doesn't I can restore backup.
Anyone want to try now?

Weird! So you did a factory reset and still nothing? Did you still have the issue before you restored apps? I mean like completely stock with just what comes on the phone. If you still have the issue with that, then we know it's not app related.
I might also try downloading and reflashing the system image...maybe something got screwed up in the 4.2 update??

Strange then that it might fix this issue since the wifi module is stored in system and he's not overwriting it so something in the kernel itself

Don't receive Whatsapp's notification when Device is on dormant mode

Dear All,
I have Nexus 4 device with stock rom and I'm facing the following issue:
When I'm not using the device for few mins and someone sends me notification in whatsapp I'm not getting it. Only when I wake up the device and open the app I'm getting the notification.
Did someone face this issue?
I'm not sure but I think this is some safe mode or something like.
Please help me with that.
Thanks,
Yotam

What will 4.2.2 do with regards to this issue?
Wifi is probably going to sleep. Go to advanced wifi settings and set it to remain always awake.
This happened to me, latest franco kernel version is somewhat fixing it!
I'm using the original kernrl, didn't change it yet?
did someone using Franco kernel and stock rom?
In the mean time I Chaged thr ROM to CM 10.1 , but I want to check it also with STOCK rom.
does someone knows which rom is the original one?
wifi sleeps when display is off, so push notifications are delayed, its a problem with 4.1.2, I currently haven't found a solution and its not my modem, wait for 4.2.2,
when streaming, display must be on to complete transfers
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065
A work around, someone pointed out in another thread, is to set wifi deliberately to turn off when phone sleeps and leave mobile data on.. when you get a notification phone will wake and wifi will switch back on to receive notification.
can confim this works, i leave 2g only on.
Check your APN settings cos mine was doing the same thing till I changed the APN settings.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I was thinking that APN should be also an issue. in the mean time I switched to CM 10.1 and this issue dissapear
Is the problem only when you are using mobile data or is it wifi as well. Have you tried it with whatsapp plus.

It's seems that I've the same problem. When I just turn off the screen I've the notifications but when the phone sleeps more than few minutes I don't receive notifications.
I have franco r71, I see if this fix the problem as someone said before.
Is this happening to everyone or just a few people (including me)?

WhatsApp on the Nexus 4 seems to be a complete and utter disaster. I don't know why but it takes 10-20 seconds to send messages via whatsapp, even when my signal is perfectly full and I could be browsing. On my old S1, it would send them almost instantly, the N4 seems to wait, dilly dally for a little bit then send them when it's happy to. I can't tell if it's a modem issue or a bug in JB but it's getting annoying.
I regularly receive clumps of 4 or 5 messages. They do usually arrive, even when in dormant, but they don't arrive like, one after the other, they just arrive all at once.
Its the standard jb WiFi issue described in Google bug report and happens to everyone.
Whatsapp is fine over 3g if.you have a decent 3g connection. In fact I use whatsapp on 2g and notifications are instant with the screen off.
As a side note, on fauxs latest beta kernel I haven't had the signal bars turn grey.

Even further problems today, surely this is to do with the baseband?

Random restarts, Messages not going through

Hey guys, thanks in advance for any help/suggestions
Currently rooted on verizon version but still running stock. Phone has had a number of random restarts (nothing specifically causes them, i just catch my phone restarting sometimes even when not doing anything). I have tried removing the gmail update that gave some the restart problem but still had a couple happen afterwards
Also having problems sending messages (sms, mms). Message either fails and i have to retry a little later or it will only go through if i restart my phone...
I kind of want to get it replaced but i really dont want a refurbished phone. Thoughts?
Random reboots are hardware issue. I snapped my phone out for new 1 last month and haven't had 1 reboot since.

Not really, or at least that's not always the case!!!
I bet the problem was caused by using the Gmail Lockscreen or Launcher widgets!!!
I've seen many many cases where the random reboots where caused by that bug on the Gmail widget!
I've reproduced it many times over just to prove friends of such issue.
Just avoid using the Gmail widget and problem will be gone!
Cheers!
To the OP: If you are running completely stock, then you have a defective phone. Replace it.

Is my 6p broken?

Over the past month I've noticed my 6p behaving oddly. Over the course of the day my data will stop working and I won't be able to send messages, make calls or receive them, even though it says I have full bars and my data is turned on. Also, when I'm asleep my phone will restart at random times (i only know this because when I wake up, I'll have to input my pin). Any ideas on what's going on? I haven't had a major drop, this phone has been babied and very well looked after. I've tried it with Pure nexus with the Franco kernel and also with the stock pure nexus kernel, and have also reverted back to complete stock, but my problem still persists.

It seems like a sign of hardware failure. Especially if it popped up during normal use and persists on complete stock. My phone has never restarted itself once. I would start with a new sim. Once in a blue moon that will fix what seems like a faulty device.

Android N notification sound bug

Hey, have you guys encountered this weird behaviour?
I do get the notifications. But the sound doesn't play sometimes, sometimes it plays like for 0.5 seconds. Other times it works fine.
Both my Nexus 6P and my friend's 5X has this happened, both are upgraded to Android N.
Is this a common bug?
Got same issue. Noticed no sound but had a couple texts. Definitely would have heard them. In the same room...wtf.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app
Can confirm this happens to me to, it will play the sound and cut off half way through, rather annoying ????
I have the same bug on N, some times notification sound plays completely but some times plays like a half of the full sound
Enviado desde mi Nexus 6P mediante Tapatalk
Same. This release is disappointing. This notification issue is annoying. Also getting delayed notifications in general. Battery life is worse on Nougat also.
Same problem here since DP4. The new october update hasn't even fixed this.
For me the problem doesn't affect Phone ringtone or hangouts message ringtones.
Whatsapp group notifications are almost always affected.
Hangouts calls and calls via hangouts dialer never even ring.
I've tried changing the default notification tone, individual tones from within the apps and nothing has fixed the problem.
I've even done a clean wipe and the problem seems to be okay for a day and then the whole thing completely breaks and never fixes itself. Clearing cache doesn't even do anything.
I'd like to know if someone isn't being affected by this, because this is a huge issue.
edit: running stock, no root, no apps intercepting notifications.
edit 2: this not only affects notification sound, but if you have vibrations on it will also cut off the accompanying vibration short.
So glad to see other's having this issue. I thought I was just going crazy. I've had the same issue, but I just chalked it up to me not paying attention, but never had the issue in the past (before nougat update). I've been thinking more and more about downgrading to marshmallow; so far the issues outweigh the benefits of the update (I really like responding to texts, facebook, etc from the notification shade).
Same problem here...and like cheeseshake said it comes from N DP4 and it happens when I receive 2 or more messages simultaneously
My annoying bug is when I pull down notification and select clear all and then a few seconds later I hear the notification sound. That is freaking annoying!!!

That's weird.
Never happened on marshmallow (I have had 6p since December 2015).
Let's hope they fix this soon.
My wife phone has the same problem. her phone also has no sound: no ring on incoming call, no sound from youtube. I need to restart the phone to have the sound back, but for 1 or 2 days, the problem happens again.
Same here. I kept checking to see if notification sounds were on and they always were. Now I know that it seems to be a problem for many and not just me. 7.1.1 NPF10C
I have never had this issue until using the 6P on 7.0, but I have noticed a partial notification multiple times with Messenger. Definitely going to report it to Google; hopefully they will get on it soon, seeing it seems to be a widespread issue.
