DIY 2DIN project - Android Head-Units

After reading some reviews, I decided I could piece together a head unit that would give me a solid hardware base.
Hardware list:
Odroid XU4
Lilliput 669gl
Bybyte 2DIN case
Sure Electronics 4X100 amplifier
Various Dongles for BT, GPS, Radio
Mini-box Dc-Dc USB PSU
There are three things I need to resolve:
1) Audio. The screen will be fed HDMI. Am I better served to use the hdmi for an audio source, or a USB - DAC?
2) FM radio. I downloaded SDR touch. The software is interesting, but no-where near vehicle operator friendly. I'm having trouble finding an automotive style alternative.
3) The USB Dc-Dc PSU has "Automotive" mode. That leaves me needing away to trigger shutdown from the XU4. I've only researched this lightly, but I was hoping for a suggestion on how to go about this.
Any input is appreciated. I hope to have the screen and case in the next few weeks.

Well, you beat me to it. I have had intentions of creating a DIY thread for a while. I was waiting to make a little progress before posting, but we can use this as a collaboration/discussion area, and hopefully it will develop into some software solutions.
I too have been meandering down this road for a while. After some pretty active work on the Newsmy NU/NR units, I finally reached a breaking point. My Unit is suffering pretty constant reboot/lockups and I'm no longer interested in compromising on my goals.
I've ordered some similar components and am hoping to start bench-testing some stuff soon. My list:
Inforce6450 SBC (Qualcomm Snapdragon 805)
Raspberry Pi 3 (To be replaced by the Inforce when it arrives)
Eleduino 10.1 1080p LCD/Capacitive.
Cheap NANO-SDR
for a case I'll scavenge one of the several Chinese headunits I have around here.
Power-supply - hadn't ordered one yet - I like your suggestion - will investigate.
So some thoughts on your questions:
1) For your/our purposes, I would look to a USB-DAC. Especially if you can offload the audio processing. I'm a little worried about the CPU/horsepower of some of these boards (esp my RPI 3 - which is I why I ordered the Inforce)
2) We will write our own radio front end. Shouldn't be difficult. While SDR touch is not open source, there are a lot of open source examples that should be helpful. Could even use the Newsmy radio source as a starting point (although it's not terribly pretty either)
3) Not sure about the communication abilities of that PSU, but I had planned on using the GPIO's of the SBC to perform some basic signaling (like tripping a relay for USB power, sensing ACC vs 12V, etc.)
Looking forward to seeing other's approach.

Awesome! Be warned that I'm a complete and total novice. I like to repurpose things more so than create my own solutions. I hadn't even thought about the GPIO to signal shutdown. I will start researching this.
I'm going to be pushing the limit on what I can fit in a case I think. I was looking for a DAC without an enclosure but got side tracked. I was looking at the twisted pear products briefly.
Here is the PSU:

Project got tabled until this spring. I had a bad experience with mobile computing solutions and haven't had time to get back on the horse.
Something smart goes here

Have also been planning a build for a while to go into my HDJ79R landcruiser.
H/W;
CNC machined aluminium face plate
UDOO QUAD - i.MX 6 Cortex-A9 Quad core 1GHz
ChalkElec 7" open frame universal HDMI LCD with capacitive multi-touch
BT Dongle
Columbus V-800 usb GPS
64gb SSD
uSDC20D shutdown controller
TDA7850 4*50W Amplifier (only need 2 channels but seems 2CH don't exist)
Switches + Rotary encoders programmed to act as USB HID Keyboard via ATmega32U4
Software side is definately where I think the difficulty will lie - getting a decent interface for interaction
I want to run android 6 or 7
# android as bluetooth client - HFP client and A2DP sink support via recompile with profile_supported_hfpclient and profile_supported_a2dp_sink set to true in packages/apps/Bluetooth/res/values/config.xml)
# re-launching music at startup and playing the last track
# Fast Startup!
# Dim Screen / Dark Mode on Illumination signal triggered (Headlights on)

I had mine up and running on the bench and my 2nd XU4 has suffered a failure.
I jumped on a 4 channel 100w from parts express and a Behringer USB DAC. I also bought and modified a Ford AM FM head unit to start packaging everything.

I've been wanting to do something like this as well. However I've thought about using a sony radio, with app remote functionality. Gives decent sound quality, radio etc all controlled through an android front end.

Can you link what you are talking about?
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk

That'll control the head unit, so single din could be mounted behind the tablet install. There are several compatible head units, with DAB radio etc

Anyone happen to have a link to a place to buy the stereo chassis that all the Chinese builders are using? I would really like to have one of the ones that looks like a Ford.

i'm starting to think, theres is possible to do with cheap (in usa,in brazil this cheap come expensive) tablets.
What i'm thinking,do a support with a format of DVD player (automotive) with wood and dismount an tablet and put down here.
The screen are multitouch or singletouch.automatic go out when the thing is on and the sound comes out for the 4 coaxial speaker with an cheap amplifier and is possible to connect to 12v (the car.obvious) (Good for Google Navigation users... \o/ LOL) but the battery of cheap tablet gonna get fu**ed up in a little time...

start with www.mp3car.com
Just build one with a 7" double-din sized tablet that support USB host, install an external slot load USB dvd drive, use JoyCon USB interface to control the tablet through steering wheel controls, mini-box.com for a USB programmable power supply so the tablet wakes, is powered, and is put to sleep with the ignition power state.
wah la, get creative
Honestly, who still uses DVD? Use some usb-mount software for rooted devices and you have what you want.

Meh. I began on mp3car and now have moved beyond it for the most part. To really be in the game the next obvious step would be to use up to 3 computer on chip modules running android. 1 for handling obd data and navigation, another handling any other in car functions, and another which handles media functionality and polls the other two for their info. Its cheaper than a full carPC as we know it now and follows a path more inline with what car manufacturers will soon push towards.
A tablet or smartphone should be more of a complimenting functional piece, not a center for primary use while in a car.

Modern tablets could just store a ripped movie locally and be mounted in the car.
What I would like is a mobile broadbanned connection for my car, that I can connect to via Bluetooth. I wouldn't mind being able to plug in an external USB player though, hehe.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
google mp3 car
youll find what your looking for there...
I was actually considering something like this, not just for a DVD player but to use as a whole head unit for my car, when I was considering a double din. I ended up just finding a double din I liked to save myself some time and money, but still something I would like to see done.
If you have any issues/questions about anything, send me a PM, maybe I can help. I'm a bit automotive inclined, and love android.
I was going to do basically what you posted, have the tablet connect to a 4 channel amp or something similar, and for power I was thinking of using (basically) a car charger, hard-wired to the normal power wires that would be plugged into the head unit. I was thinking it would be best, if possible to hard-wire this to the battery terminals (however most if not all tablets have an internal battery) that way it would be directly controlled by the car. Only problem is I'm not exactly sure how you'd power it on, I guess you could just have the amp turn on/off with the car, and keep the battery power in the tablet. You wouldn't have to worry about power up times or anything then, and audio would only play when it should, but would still more or less play on the device in the mean time...which is a bit of an issue.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, just some ideas to think about. Good luck
this is funny, I had a tablet mounted in my car and hooked in to the stereo in 2002 or 2003, it ran windows xp LOL
a cop pulled me over and asked me if I could watch movies on it, I said I could but that would be kinda stupid while driving, he said, we'll would you please turn it off, I said no I use it as a navigation system (which was microsoft streets and trips with a USB GPS),
I tell you other than the .5 of a second update times streets and trips was freaking awesome!
but DVD's??? cough, yeah I remember 1998!
the cop never did give me a ticket!

Hey Warren...I'm really curious as to what you found. Just started looking into this myself and doing a lot of reading. Would you mind sharing some of what you have found that is better than mp3car?
Thanks
just buy a cheap tablet (e.g. Vega / Viewsonic 10s with honeycomb), a car mount, a cheap HU that has 3.5mm audio jack connected to speakers and plug the tablet to the HU with a 3.5mm audio cable. DONE! it'll probably cost u $500 including everything (even the sound system). why make it so damn complicated?

I wouldn't suggest the monoprice one. I heard that it doesn't auto connect when you start the car.
Look into the Blackberry Music Gateway. I just ordered one and it should be arriving tomorrow. It autoconnects with no problems.
I'm hoping to use this in conjunction with NFC to make everything automated.
I use the XtremeMac Incharge bluetooth. It works great and have used it with multiple phones and never had a problem syncing
I'm using this: http://dx.com/p/bluetooth-v2-0-edr-audio-receiver-w-3-5mm-audio-jack-for-iphone-4s-more-black-120198.
It's worked flawlessly so far. I've used it for over a year with my GNex and now my N4. I've never had to reconnect it after the first pairing and it's good to go as soon as I start the car. The only negative would be the shipping time from DX. It usually takes about a month for my items to arrive, but the low prices make up for the inconvenience.

Bought this from Sprint.com for around 70 bux last year. Great investment. Small in profile and works great! Music is clear and works every time.
I use the "GOGroove Smartmini aux"
It's cheap, and works great. Only downside is the annoying bright flashing blue light when it's paired. Mine is out of the way though so its not very noticible to me when driving.

Do you have another phone paired? Sync can only pair with one device at once and it was tricky figuring out how to drop the old one my first try. If that fails is there an update avail for your sync? Ford posts the updates and instructions to load using a flash drive on their website.
All good suggestions.. I like the GoGroove because I don't need a separate charger and it doesn't take up space in my storage console. I'll have to add the XtremeMac and BB Gateway to the list as well.
Funny thing is I used to use the Nexus One desktop dock to stream from my N1 in the car.
As someone linked to this seems tempting:
http://dx.com/p/bluetooth-v2-0-edr-audio-receiver-w-3-5mm-audio-jack-for-iphone-4s-more-black-120198
It's definitely gotta be the cheapest, and while only 2 reviews one does say it autoconnects. Sure hope it does.
What would you guys say is the best that:
- Autoconnects
- Has microphone support for calls (that doesn't COMPLETELY suck?)
I guess any bluetooth receive could be charged without issue... though I guess it's also nice to have one that is sort of "designed" to be used charged, so no real on/off type of thing...
With GoGroove, do you need to "turn it on" each time you start the car?
Yes my iphone was synced. Any idea how to unpaired the device? I I've since sold the iphone

3 words. . . .Black Electrical Tape :victory:
Last week I was in a rental Chevy with full BT integration. That made me realize just how nice it was, and how crappy my hacked 3.5mm input + Belkin BT in my older Saab really was.
So I broke down, called Crutchfield and ordered a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X796 head unit with full BT, USB, Pandora integration, HD radio, CD, etc. It arrived today and I had it installed in about an hour and a half, including soldering up the wiring harness. $189 well spent, fun new tech and sounds SO much better than the old stock head unit that it feels like I have a new car! Excellent, proper hands free calling with an external mike even. A bit more finish work to do when some other bits arrive on Tuesday.
There are cheaper similar options, even under $100, that lose the HD radio and CD player. I really wanted the HD radio, though who listens to CDs now?
Four hour round trip tomorrow to see my sisters and a couple of my nieces, probably streaming Spotify the whole way, with Google Nav running and some calls thrown in for good measure. The full workout.
Of course, the Crutchfield rep sold me a new set of door speakers too. "These are good, and they're on sale!" I'll get to those later. Then I suspect I'll want to replace the rear speakers. Then the dash speakers! LOL

I've been using the GROM-USB2 with a bluetooth adapter for about a year with multiple phones with no problems. It integrates with many factory stereos. In my car, I can use the steering wheel controls to skip tracks, and the seek buttons on the head unit to activate voice dialing and hang up calls. It also plays the navigation audio over the stereo speakers. It's a bit more than the ones you are looking at (about $130 with the bluetooth option), and installation is a bit more involved, but I'm really happy with it. You can find more information on their site at:

Nexus 7 Dash install

Couple of weeks ago my Pioneer DEH-3500UI head unit and about 32gb worth of SD cards got jacked, so I figured it would be the perfect time to install a Dash Tablet, and also make it theft proof by doing a completely removable design.
So, lets just go through some of the items of this build.
The Vehicle is a 1992 Chevy S10 Tahoe, that's got about $7,000 worth of upgrades already (I'll post a link for those if anyone is interested)
I'll be using a Nexus 7 LTE tablet on T-mobile since 5gb data is only $10 for me.
for augmenting the truck I'll be using a Scantool SX OBD-II adapter with Torque pro, at a later time I'll be integrating an amp to power my existing Pioneer A-series speakers, And possibly a backup camera at a later date.
The mount will consist of a RAM cradle, mounted permanently to a plate that will function as a mount surface and a cover for the headunit.....hole.
I'll also be mounting Two RCA jacks and USB ports on the plate so if I decide to remove the tablet completely I can also easily remove the external wires mounted to the RAM cradle, which I'll mount a Micro USB plug and a 3.5mm Jack to the cradle that will connect when the cradle is closed with the tablet in it.
I don't have any pictures yet, but I'll get some posted up in a day or two, Tablet and the main install parts SHOULD be here Monday.
And for those interested, Here is a link that explains why there is so much $$$ and WHY I'm using an OBD-II Adapter on a 1992 vehicle :silly:
I'm a link
So I read this and my first thought was "Over $7 grand in a truck worth $700? Dude has way more money than brains." Out of curiosity, I followed the link and read all 23 pages of that thread, and now I just think you've got more passion than brains...or you're a glutton for punishment. Either way, I salute your dedication. I've got a laundry list of things I want to do to my 2008 Envoy Denali (getting Android in there being one of the main ones), but I always end up putting them off. So good on you for actually following through on some of your crazy ideas. I've subscribed to this thread and I'm anxiously awaiting how this will turn out for you.

Quite honestly though that thing started life out just to impress someone, what it's turned into is a money pit and my baby.
I mean it's like a Envoy XL and a Syclone had a baby.
Putting a tablet or something would be much easier for a stock looking install in your vehicle since it's a double dinn. Mights actually be pre-made bezels.

Other than that I'll just be using the standard Lollipop UI, may look into some UI mods to add softkeys for volume and what not, but for a non integrated headunit it should be fine without a fancy UI overlay.

They look like they're doing what Insane Audio is doing by sourcing OEM electronics then putting a custom pre-load on it, dropping it in a pretty box and adding support. For many it's probably a bit more reassuring than sourcing direct from China.

Plus, I like the alternative style they offer. I have not seen that anywhere else. They said they are working on the new PX6 model. Should be out around the near of the year.

I'm not knockin 'em at all because they're alleviating some of the concerns that many users have, domestic sourcing, support and what's likely a more stable OS configuration as they stabilize on a solid build with much less frequent updates (where you're likely to pickup bugs). My biggest issue with Insane Audio is that they're SUPER slow to update to current OSes (at last check they were still on Android 6.0, even for their PX5 platform) and they charge an arm and a leg for what amounts to only minimal value-add. GTA seems to be much more reasonably priced given what I know about the wholesale costs of the base hardware.

Nah, it's cool. I don't know them, but I get a little bit of a warm fuzzy from what little I've seen. I would look into Insane for sure, but 1) the price is just too much, and 2) the screen is too small now that I'm spoiled with a 10.2". I love that theirs is waterproof. But I spoke to them a couple of months ago, and they said they have no plans to do a new version for the JK!
I just took a look at the GTA head unit, and it looks really nice. I did notice that their FAQ here https://www.gtacarkits.com/faq-android/ states that:
Can you update the software on GTA Car Kits Android Stereos?
There is no software updates planned, unless there is a software bug that needs to be fixed. The software has been tested for a long time to be without any bugs, hence there is no software update planned for the future. Apps from the PlayStore can be updated.

That does worry me from the standpoint that their video shows a custom firmware on there that appears to clean up a lot of the Chinese firmware config apps (like steering controls for example) are different. I emailed them for clarification, and will let you know what I heard back.
I also asked them about ADB passwords, whether or not the EQ works in all modes (apps, FM, and Android Auto), etc.
There's a PX6 on AliExpress https://www.aliexpress.com/item/330...chweb0_0,searchweb201602_1,searchweb201603_52 that appears to have the same 3-piece restyle trim as GTA, which looks interesting.

Whoa, awesome information. Thanks, jkchris! But on that AliExpress link, where's the one-piece unit? I don't see an option for it.

I didn't see any one-piece units. I also did not hear anything back from GTA, so that's not a great sign of customer service.

Building own Android Head Unit

Chees Folks,
i wanna start a project and hope for an exchange of knowledge. First of all i wanna introduce myself. Im Pat, 27 years old from Germany. I have an BMW 3 (E46) with a Pumpkin Android Headunit (famous RK3188). Tbh the head unit is really slow and i thought: "Why not build a whole new head unit by myself?". I'm experienced in electronics and maybe a little bit of programing.
I thought about the following parts to realize the Project:
As Mainboard the Pine64 Rock64 - Advantages: Full Android support, Based on the Raspberry Pi, 4GB RAM, a lot of modules are available like 7" Touchscreen, external soundcard, GPS module, FM module, WiFi module and i also found a nice module to emulate my Steering Wheel Keys without big effort to it.
The challenging part comes with the bluetooth module. With a little investigation i found out, that you need a special bluetooth module that comes with the profiles: HSP, HFP, AD2P and so on.... Now the big question! How can i find an app for android that works with the module and let me manage the connections, make phone calls, transfer contacts and play music from my mobilephone? I guess you know what kind of app i am talking about. The common Android HU like Eresin, Pumpkin, Xtron, JOYING have these bluetooth managing apps (see screenshot)

I mean i could try to use one of these apps, but presumably it wont work cause of the different device. Maybe one of you can help and is interested in building a system that is usable for anyone.
Best regards!

Yes is saw this thread but unfortunately the creator didn't answer for about 3 Months and as i see the progress is really slow there. But sounds very interesting. Thanks for the hint
Actually, the PINE64 board is not really fast (Quad-Core A53 CPU, the usual PX5 head units have Octa-Cora A53). Considering all the effort you would have with getting something custom to a useable state, it's probably much easier and cheaper to try one of the new PX6 units for the E46 (with much faster A72 cores) first.

Im open for different boards in my configuration but i dont want a new Android Head Unit. I want to build it on my own which is more updatable in future than these common Units.

Unfortunately, I cannot post a link, but if you search for "hikey960-car gitlab" on Google, you will find details on the prototype of that project which may be of interest.

That one is from Adam Serbinski.
The link I referred to is from 96carboard aka ibdroid aka luciusfox aka doitright aka Mukesh (and a few other aliases) and continues here
I did not check and do not know if doitright is working on the first one too.
Edit: After further examination they all work on the same tree.
Edit2: After further examination I think that Adam Serbinsky is one of the many aliases doitright (96carboard) is using.
