Some Questions Before Buying the Moto X Style - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I need everyone's opinions here.I'm getting the Moto X Style for INR 23999 which is lower than a One Plus 3. Is it worth buying it?
Here are my concerns:
1) Is the bootloader unlockable and can you install custom roms?
2) How is the battery backup, if everything is turned on. No gaming. Social media updates, sending/receiving email, etc.
3) Chances of this phone getting Androind 7.0?
4) RAM Management is good?
Thank you.

1. Yes
2. Decent battery life. Not the best for sure. Installing Xposed makes it worse. With greenify installed and with very little YouTube or netflix I'll easily get through the whole day .
3. It'll get it for sure. If not by Motorola but by cm, du, etc.
4. Yes ram is fine. It has 3gb and it's Android so no worries.

This is my opinoin:
1) Yes.
2) Battery backup is okay. Considering you're not going to use it for gaming, you can last about a day with approx 4-5 hours OST.
3) Pretty decent chance
4) TBH, it's not that great for me because I use a tons of applications and I end up with having about 500-700mb of free RAM so a 6GB RAM would've been a beast for me.

Buying advice: Asus ZenFone 2

I am in the market for a new cell phone to replace my current Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini. Given my budget, I have nearly settled on the Asus ZenFone 2. At $299 for an upper-middle tier cell phone with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, it seems like a solid bet. The only real downfall I have discovered from my research thus far is the ZenUI which overlays the stock Android experience and the massive amount of bloatware that comes pre-installed on the phone.
If I were able to safely get rid of the bloatware and make the phone more like a pure stock Android experience, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
I consider myself fairly able to work with technology, although I have never actually rooted, flashed, or otherwise modded a cell phone. So, I am looking for some guidance. Do you think the ZenFone2 warrants a purchase in spite of the concerns outlined? If no, do you have any suitable reocmmendations in that budget range? More importantly, do you think I would be able to modify the phone to get rid of bloatware and make it a more stock Android experience?
Sorry if this questions has been asked previously. As I mentioned, I am very new to this, certainly new to the forums, and just looking for guidance. Thanks!
Bloatware thing is overblown, you can disable every single preinstalled app on the phone. The performance is amazing, this is a lag free phone. However, I do no recommend this phone simply based on the battery life, its terrible. There is no way around it.

I'm not as concerned about the battery life as I am generally near a charger. But, do you think the battery issues might be address through an Android update (I hear 5.1.1 is coming soon to Asus) or even a root/mod like Cyanogenmod?

and btw don't install Cm 12.1,i tried it and it's worse than asus stock rom, trust me...
The only bad thing about the phone (550ML) is the battery backup and the memory usage.
Except that, it is good.
Depending where you are, i could advice your to buy the redmi note 2, lower price, more powerfull, pictures a bit better in low light environment, sound better, 5 hours SOT and not three like this phone, lower and brighter screen...
I bought the WW version of the phone you are considering, after upgrading from a S4. Unlike a lot here on XDA, I have left it at stock, with 64gig of storage and 4gig of ram who cares about the bloatware. With Auto Start Manager you can disable anything you want to anyway. It does what I want it to do and I am not stuck to the carrier's software update schedule as I was with the S4.
I've had ZenFone 2 for about 1 month now. My previous phone was first gen Moto G.
ZenUI is surprisingly good. I usually have Google Now launcher or Nova Launcher but I've been sticking with ZenUI. The bloat is only a minor inconvenience.
As for performance: the phone is a beast! Astonishing considering the price. I have 1.8ghz 4gig ram version.
The screen is good. It doesn't get dim enough and so is not ideal for nighttime use. I tried to use rootdim to no avail. I use phone at min brightness for most of day.
Battery life is poor! Struggle to get 3hrs screen on time. I'm a medium to heavy user. Have to charge it twice a day. Hoping this can be improved with 5.1.1. If, not then might consider one plus one.

Well what people need to understand is that ALL of the AOSP roms for the zenfone 2 are in BETA STAGES! Meaning its not 100% stable. Not the devs fault as they are doing there best to get it to a stable release.
As for recommending the phone to OP. Yes I do, is in my list its one of the top phones for 300 and under this year. Now its not perfect(battery, junk bloat, screen brightness, screen to body ratio) but for the 4gb model if you tweak and make it yours you will love the speed and its flagship experience at a mid level price point.
Well, many people have already give you a help but here it goes another one. This phone is just amazing. For this price you only have OP2 or Moto X to compete (both are a little bit expensive).
My battery reach to 4.30h SOT and i have always wifi, bt and 4g on. Play about 1h games, lots of browsing and social networks. 30m talking. In the end of day still have my battery around 25%. Not bad but with 5.1.1 hope this improve. There is very little bloatware and you can remove them or disable easily.
The bad things is the screen body ratio is bsd and make the phone biggest, the camera is not brilliant, the power button on top, the screen brightness.
But every phones have pros and cons so, for me, this is the best for the price
Already bought another for my sister and i recommend alot. Very happy user

Strongly disagree with that, it is improving daily and imho already surpasses the ASUS stock firmware. CM has given me a new found love for and enjoyment of this excellent phone.

If you're not a hardcore gamer, then better wait for the Zenfone 2 Laser (ZE550KL) variant with Snapdragon 615 and 3GB RAM. I had almost decided to buy the ZE550ML, although I was apprehensive about the battery life, when I read about the new model. It costs marginally higher than the ZE550ML, but should have better battery if somewhat less performance. Plus 3GB RAM should still take care of the ZenUI bloat.

ASUS ZenFone2 is a great phone!
Okay, so I'm a bit biased...but this phone is actually really good! (I came from a Nexus). Battery life is really dependent on your location, signal, usage scenarios, etc. But I'm on T-Mo in the Bay Area where signal isn't the best, I use the phone for work and have gotten through an entire day 7-10PM with at least 20% left. Bloatware can be disabled on the latest firmware.
Yeah, I've disabled 23 bloatwares xD

Better than Moto X Pure

Hey guys, I'm a Verizon customer and my 2 requirements in a phone are unlockable bootloader and sd card support. Since my options are scarce (CDMA compatibility) I've been using a 64GB Moto X Pure since they launched last year. I recently stumbled across the Moto G4 Plus and noticed that it fits my criteria for a smart phone.
Does anyone who owns a G4 Plus also own a MXP? They seem to be about the same size. The MXP has a better camera and screen resolution while the G4+ has a octa core processor. I'd much appreciate anyone's feedback who owns both phones. How do they compare in normal/heavy use, not just on paper?
Source - http://www.phonearena.com/phones/co...la-Moto-X-Pure-Edition-2015/phones/10053,9694
The Moto X Pure is much better in almost every way.
G4 Plus has a better camera, especially in low light situations. Fingerprint reader is super fast and I use it every day.
And the model with 64GB storage /4GB RAM is fast enough for every need. Who cares what a benchmark say? Nobody uses a benchmark daily...
Screen resolution? 520 ppi vs 401 ppi? Who cares, in order to see that you need to burry your face into the display or, if you are over 40yrs, you need two pairs of glasses to see that density!
PS: That comparison link is wrong, because that's not the US version of G4 Plus, it has the wrong LTE bands!
I ordered one off eBay that someone had lost the IMEI from flashing the wrong rom. Obviously I didn't pay full price. I'm hoping I can flash a stock rom and fix it.
If anyone has a link to the best restore file it would be appreciated. I tried to download from File Factory last night but after an hour or so the download failed. It's a US Moto G4 Plus 64GB.
Or if anyone else has tips about restoring the IMEI that would be great.

Def not a great camera. It is decent and great for the price but not great. It is mediocre at best. The videos are mediocre too.

Nevermind. The @$$hole had been on XDA every day since he sold me the phone and supposedly shipped it to me. I checked the tracking # yesterday and USPS had never received it. I sent him a message about it. He first replied that he was shipping it tomorrow (today), then immediately replied that his son dropped and busted.
Why sell something on eBay if you're not sure that you want to sell it yet?

Btw you should get better battery life on the g4 because of Smaller resolution and same battery. If I recall the mxp also has 3k mah. The CPU should also use less energy, not sure on that.
Overall, you're downgrading, especially camera. I like the g4 plus even on 2gb memory. It's smooth and decent battery life. Fingerprint is fast. You don't really have a choice imo. You may even opt for the regular g4 imo. Not much difference outside camera.

Good information. Thanks.
I currently have the moto g4 play (Verizon version)
and I'm thinking about getting the Moto X Pure or the Moto G4 for the bigger display and hd calling. I have read that both phones have a problem with overheating. (The Qualcomm snapdragon 808 and 617 processors are known for overheating issues). I would lean toward the Moto G4 but it seems the overheating issue is a bigger problem with the G4 than the Moto X pure.
What are your thoughts on the overheating issues?

I have a G4 Plus and it heats, but it doesnt overheat. I tested playing 3 games at the same time and plugged the TurboCharger for 30m and it got very hot like 47° but look what i was doing.
Heats yes, of course but it doesn't overheat. I have a friend who has a LG G3, that phone really overheats. Reachs 60° only playing a game, and 43° in stock. Insane.

Oh okay. Thanks.
I really like the moto g4 play and feel I would like the moto g4(don't want the plus 'cause I don't need or use a fingerprint sensor and there's not that many upgrades that
justify me getting the plus over the regular g4).
My concern is that I play a lot of music videos on my phone and when I tested a Moto X Pure in store,
the phone got hot after watching a music video on YouTube for only about two or three minutes, so I was like okay don't think I want to mess with that.
I'm thinking it might be the same or worse with the moto g4.
I don't want a fire trap for a phone.
May try the moto g4 and if I do experience constant overheating I'll simply return it.
I personally think it's a mix between:
Better camera, fingerprint sensor (and a good one), & battery life with the g4 plus
vs
Better performance (both cpu and gpu, especially gpu and overall performance) & maybe the fact there is more community support since it's been out for a while, for the x pure.
Can't be asked about the heat problems that some users are having with either, I ran antutu benchmark on both g4 plus and x pure and none got hot to the point where you couldn't hold it or have it feel like it was burning you. US variants of course.

Moto X Style Very Poor SoT

I know there are a lot of threads about the poor battery life on the Moto X Style my case is a bit extreme, My SoT doesn't extend beyond 2 hours and I am considerably a heavy user but I have cut down on most apps and I use those on my Moto Z which is like my second phone, I use that at home but for college I use this Moto X Style and I have to charge it twice daily with apps like Facebook Instagram Messenger WhatsApp one or two arcade games that's it. What could I do to extend my SoT? i don't want to root my phone till I am receiving software updates. I bought this phone in January 16. There are no performance hickups either. I have disabled apps that i don't need too.

Yeah... Battery life is bad... Stay on WiFi as much as possible. Social media, especially with less than excellent signal will kill the battery on this device. I get anywhere from 2-3.5 hours on a single charge with mixed WiFi and mobile data.
I don't know how but last two security updates made it worse. i used to get around 2.5-3.5 hours but recently it's hardly 2-2.5 hours with mixed 4g and wifi mostly wifi though
Uninstalling Facebook and Facebook messenger would be good for increasing battery life.

Heya Ace, Question... You are always on here helping out people, I'm curious as to what you think of the someone going from the Moto X Pure to a G5 Plus. Personally I think it's either the same (in some ways) or a step backwards going to the new G5. Price wise you can get either phone for pretty much the same price; hence my question between the two phones. I actually thought they'd use a snappy 810 as the processor in the G5 Plus

Moto G5 Plus is a great device... as far as a downgrade, that's personal opinion of what matters to you. The screen is a downgrade from QHD to fullHD and NFC is lost, but you gain Fingerprint unlock, battery life is increased 50%-100% for SOT, and the SD625 will walk all over the SD808 in terms of performance, both computational and GPU performance. Other than the display itself and the loss of NFC, the G5+ is probably a superior device in my opinion.
Jessooca said:
I was talking to a reviewer friend of mine and he said he was fairly disappointed in the camera quality though.
Superior device? Perhaps you're being generous with the word Superior. Lol
Ok then what about the G4 Plus 64gb 4gb vs G5 Plus 64gb 4gb??

As I said... All depends on what you want.
G4+ vs G5+ boils mostly down to screen size, build quality, and battery life. G5+ has a smaller screen, but is slimmer, it also has a more efficient processor thus uses less power, but they both use the same 3000mAh battery, this gives the G5+ about a 20% battery life improvement over the G4+. The G5+ also has a metal build and seems of better quality. Camera is a wash quality wise, but reviewers state the G5+ starts up and focuses faster. The G5+ also has a faster processor and GPU.
Winner in my book, the G5+, but realize to me screen size, once it gets over 5" or 1920x1080 resolution, means nothing to me.
I do find it odd on the G5+ Lenovo opted for a smaller display... But 5.2 to 5.5 is not really significant.
Jessooca said:
Well if you get a chance, put one in each hand and your mind will change, the skinnier G5 just feels odd and looks meh. It's like holding a Blu R1 HD.
Ok there is a debate going on about the best for under $299 with many saying the Moto G5 Plus is the best bang for your buck but how can that be when the Honor 8 is $260 on Amazon and if you've used it it's hands down a perfect device under $300

Well, where do I start with this... I have touched all these devices and more. I like the metal feel, better than plastic, again this is just personal preference. The build quality seems noticably better. I thrown them in a case regardless.
I was only making a comparison between those 2 devices, not considering other options or manufacturer's. Personally, the Honor series has great hardware, but EMUI ruins the device completely, especially with how much under the hood crap Huawei has done to prevent you from changing the launcher, seriously, is it that bad to swap a launcher? But if you can deal with the bloat of EMUI or Asus's ZenUI, they are great options in that price range, personally I think the UX ruins the devices from these makers.
Personally, I like the Axon 7 Mini at the $200 price point (BestBuy and others frequently discount it to that price, my son has one, it's great). Plus there is the Blu Vivo 5R, with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, dual SIM, and an unlocked bootloader with nearly pure Android is nice at $169 (MicroCenter current price, the website doesn't say 5R but that is what's in the store). Or even the $129 Blu Studio XR2 is a fantastic deal.
At the $300 price point, things get interesting... The Blu Pure XR is fantastic, plus they have a few more good devices in that $200-$300 range. Don't count out Blu, the last couple years, especially the last year, they have really stepped up there game.
Pushing that, I'm big fan of the OnePlus 3T but it's pushing a bit out of price range for even high-end budget device.
Yeah... I've been looking... A lot.

Why buy G4 Play (dtv)

Well... I will be getting some money soon, and I'm looking for a new and decent phone that is not very expensive. After searching a lot I got myself in a dilemma between the G4 Play and Ulefone Metal (http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_411511.html?wid=11&lkid=10607172).
Just like the G4 Play, Ulefone Metal also have a nearly untouched stock rom, but it have 3 gb of ram and its octacore (1,5ghz), and as well it is 50 reais (brazillian money) cheaper. The thing is, I'm not going to be that guy playing real racing 3 and many other high demanding games(half-life 2 maybe...), I'll probably just emulate games. I have seen that the G4 Play have a lot of custom rom development going on, and roms like ressurection and viper really exites me, but the Ulefone just have 3 roms, and none of them seems to be finished. So, I have 2 questions:
1. How have being your experience with the G4 Play (before and after using a custom rom)?
2. Can it run dreamcast?
G4 play is great, esp since it has some active devs but alot of peeps here like stock roms, since Moto is good there. Consider the new Moto E4 if u haven't yet.
Edit... Actually u may notice the majority of roms are from 1 person, so less devs than it seems
If you want to use the stock rom a little faster and cheaper, that other phone is the way to go, if want to explore Android with the perfect device, Moto G4 play is the way to go

Edit... Actually u may notice the majority of roms are from 1 person, so less devs than it seems

Is there any difference between G4 Play and E4? they seems to have the same specs...
The only actual difference I see is that no one seems to make custom roms for E4

The processor is slightly better, and it has a fingerprint reader, but yes it's very similar to G4 play and slightly lower price even.
It's only been out a matter of weeks so I'm sure some roms will come.

Worth the upgrade?

Hi users and developers ,I am pretty much confused as for I should pick Moto g4+(3,32) by handing over my Moto Turbo (3,64),so can suggest your views as if it'd be a worthy upgrade or not?as far as I know the g4+ has software glitches creating the performance issues and wonder if they could solved by installing custom ROMs? awaiting for a quick reply, thanks in advance ??
no clue if it's a n upgrade
Don't know anything about your current phone.-
No software issue ever on my g4 plus.
The g4 plus is ok for a cheapy phone.
i DO have ghost touch off and on which is a pain in the ass though.
No compass also, some people want that.

if you can buy G5+ or G5s+ go for them as G4+ is a heater and have different problems for different users.
you should get g5+ which is defiantly good phone than g4+
The G5+ looks much better if you can afford it. As others said, the compass is missed in the G4+. Other than that, it's a great phone with a great battery life and I don't have ghost touch issues if I leave the screen brightness below 50%.
You should not go for g4+
I must tell you this phone heats a lot especially when you record a video, no matter which rom you are on. And there are different issues with different users like ghost touch, screen burn, random shutdowns/reboots,etc.

Nope don't ever pick g4+ when g5+ or g5s+ are way better in heat management and have premium design.

Go for g5+ instead of g4+. I'm currently using the g4+ and recently bought the g5+ for my brother and i must say that g5+ was 100 times better than the g4+. G4+ heats a lot if u play games and browsing with data etc... Whereas the g5+ doesn't even get warm with extreme gaming and multitasking, browsing etc...Also the battery life is terrible in g4+ as we have to charge for 2 times a day (my usage may differ with others) but on the g5+,the battery life is awesome. Note that both are having 3000mah battery but the processors are different which makes the g5+ more battery efficient and no heat rejection. Camera is also better in g5+ even though g4+ also takes good photos. Overall if u want to buy new phone i will 100% recommend g5+ over g4+ as i have seen both phones and used it.
I see lot of ppl recommending g5, but that was not your question!
I find the g4 to have a really nice and active community with a lot of stable and experimental roms. Oreo is soon to be stable.
The g5 is a newer device which will be upgraded to oreo officially, but is a more expensive device and it doesn't have official TWRP nor official lineageOS yet.
I have had many problems with my g4+ and it's replacement from Moto. On my first one I had a massive screen burn in issue, after 5 minutes of charging you could see the status bar icons when the status bar wasn't there. With the replacement, it kept bending so that if you put it on a flat surface only the top and bottom would be touching with the middle arcing upward about a millimeter. I also have had ghost touch issues on the replacement that happened whether or not it was charging. The only fix I found for that was to keep the brightness low. the G4+ is a fantastic phone for the price, if you can get one with no issues. As far as whether or not it is an upgrade from your Motorola Droid Turbo, here is a link to phone arena that compares the specs of the two phones (64 gigabyte models of each). I hope this helps you out, have a great day.
I have just purchased an used Moto G4 Plus XT1644 4GB + 64GB today at B&H Photo in excellent condition (10 out of 10), at least that's how they described it, for $138.50 shipped. It's arriving on Thursday. But I was not aware of these heating issues, screen burn in / ghost touches and so on... So now I'm kinda worried about my decision... My wife had an iPhone 6 and I converted her to a Moto G5 Plus about 3 to 4 months ago. She's very happy with the phone.
I only went with the G4 Plus because of the extra RAM, plenty storage space, external SD card reader and larger screen compared to the G5 Plus (*for the price I paid*). Most importantly, I bought the G4 Plus because it has ElementalX kernel, official Lineage OS support and TWRP as well. The combination of these three kept my Nexus 5 going for 3+ years before it gave up on me a few months ago. My N5 still works but it randomly shuts down and reboots when using demanding tasks like taking photos or when it heats up. As long as I can keep it frozen (out of the freezer - literally) it works just fine though. I've been using a crappy $60 Amazon Prime Exclusive phone, the Blu R1 HD on stock Marshmallow + Magisk / Xposed / Gravity Box / N-ify. Performance is fine considering what I paid for it. Thanks to the infamous fire.apk that plagued the R1 HD for months, I managed to get a full refund for that phone today. So I've got a free phone with malware basically.
I really wanted a 5.5" to 6" phone with good dev support on the cheap but as you know, both the G5 Plus / G5S Plus have a smaller 5.2" and very little dev support (compared to the G4 Plus). So I went with lower price, better dev support and slightly bigger screen on the G4 Plus.
What do you guys think?

Thanks! But have you checked that page out? It's a very random, make a wish type of messages that no one cares to reply based on personal experience with the device. My post was in hopes of a feedback from people who currently own that device that I just bought. Because I was wondering if I should have invested more money on upgrading to the G5 Plus. "Worth the upgrade?" which I honestly think it's still on topic. If no one wants to take the time to entertain that thought it's fine. I just thought I'd share my own thoughts / reasoning behind my purchase of the G4 Plus instead of just "making a wish" that probably no one with answer objectively with authority on the subject. Get it?
Never mind. Bought a brand new G5 Plus 4+64 at Walmart for 154+tax. I think it's a better deal than the G4 Plus I purchased yesterday. I'll compare them both, particularly the screen size difference and max brightness. But I think you can't beat that price on a brand new phone.
