A little help please.....! - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I drop my G2 and the screen broke, i sent it to some guy to put a new one.
He put it on and it worked ok but then some vertical lines showed up because of the screen type as happened some time ago in some roms.
If i reflash the rom, will it solve the problem and it will detect the correct screen type?
Big thanks!!

No one?

I have read comments about some replacement screens being incompatible and having problems. Therefore I think it's probably a good idea to stick to a OEM replacement screen, such as one that came from a working phone.

[Q] just purchased a g2 for $30. screen doesnt turn on

The phone definitely boots up because the lights on the buttons flash on then turn off after some time. The keyboard also lights up. You can tell the backlight turns on on the screen, but there is no picture.
Anyone have any idea about what I should do? Thinking about trying to restore to a stock Tom somehow tonight. Then I'm thinking about looking for screen replacements.
I was curious if anyone has had this issue before.
Update 07/14/11
So I got the screen and switched the old one out for the new one. This one also only has the backlight turning on, but I noticed when I put a part back on, there was a little bump in the middle of the phone. Haven't had a chance to fix it, but I noticed it's a piece hitting this rubber piece that seems to "transport" the sound for the mic from the bottom of the phone to the actual microphone module within the phone.
Removed that rubber piece, and I'll try installing it later. I was getting some blue and red visible in the middle of the phone. Anyone know what's wrong?

ebay for the parts and look around for the link for repairs. I don't exactly remember the link, but it's in one of the "spring replacement" threads. Good luck

How sure are you it's the LCD screen? Replacement screens cost more than what I bought the phone for...lol
it's mostly the physical connection to the screen.
and on your note about it costing more than what you bought the phone for... there are tons of parts on the phone that will cost more than 30bucks. not much you can do about that since you got it non fully functional.

Sorry to be a both, but what exactly is the physical connection? Do I find it by opening the phone up completely to the point where I replace the actual LCD?

Never had to do it myself, but there is a cable connecting the two parts of the phone. That is usually where this problem originates from. It's not easy to fix though if your not familiar with fixing electronics from what i have seen.

I've taken apart my laptop completely and put it back together before. Completely as in taking the lcd off and different chips and wireless modules and stuff. I think it may be something I can handle. I'm going to take a look at it now. Restoring wont do me any good because not even the boot screen shows up.

It's pretty much a ribbon cable that feeds data to display and stuff. When you buy a spare screen, it usually comes with a connector

So I completely tore apart the phone, got to the point where if I had another LCD screen, I could have easily switched it out. But I don't, so I just put it all back together. I really hope this new LCD will fix the issue. I really hope it's not some other motherboard issue. If all else fails, it goes up on eBay for $70-$100 as is for the phone. If I fix it, I just got myself a phone that goes for $200 used for only $57.
sure. goodluck with it. if you can do it then you're all set. good luck

Only $57? That would make the lcd screen $27 if u really paid $30 for the phone, but you said the screen was more than what u paid for the phone...so now im confused.

Sorry. After some searching on eBay, I found some sellers selling it for a few dollars less than 30, e.g. 27.
But I decided to go with a seller who sold more than 200, who claims the screen is an OEM screen, and who is top rated. He sells his for $32. Which makes my phone $62 after all is said and done.
The housing has some scratches on the top and bottom though, which decreases the value a bit, but hey, if it works I'll probably keep it as a backup. Currently have the HD2, but I got a Vibrant with original box and accessories for $100, so I think I'm going to sell the HD2.
That was kinda off topic, sorry
LCD screen should be here by the 13th.

I don't own a G2 but I still think this could be a similar issue to what we get over here on the HTC Droid Incredible. First, what makes you believe its still a screen issue if it lit but just didn't throw picture? Usually thats the symptom of having the wrong recovery version for the device hardware version. Normally for us what happens is we will get somebody who is new and rooting for the first time and they'll end up flashing the wrong recovery or freak out because they don't realize the root process takes a little while and yank the cord. End result being exactly what you've explained above. Phone starts but no screen. So we end up having them do the ruu or a second option which we call a "blind install" where you drop whatever your p file(ours is PB31IMG.zip) so whatever it is for the G2 drop that on the SD and reboot to hboot and do the update process by simply knowing how long to wait between key presses and what keys to hit without useing the screen. Its a unique process and all very magical. Haven't lost a single Inc yet because of this issue.
Anyways bud just a thought...

It doesn't seem to be a ROM issue.
Update 7/18: Sold the G2 on eBay and still made a good lump of money. I was very happy, until another G2 popped up with the same exact issue. Got it for a steal as well, and I tried the OEM screen I got from eBay, and it was still having issues, and it seems to cause the phone to overheat while charging. Definitely a defective screen and someones getting a great deal on a decent condition G2 because I already took the payment after I figured it was the screen I got.
I'm going to try to get a replacement from the guy that sold it to me on eBay, but I already left him positive feedback thinking it was the phone's fault.
Will update probably late July or early August when all of this gets sorted out.
TL;DR: bought 2nd g2 with same issue, turns out replacement screen didn't work in the 2nd g2, too late to not sell the first g2, getting another replacement screen to fix 2nd g2. First g2 was in better condition though =|
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET
Just installed the second screen that I ordered, and it works PERFECTLY. Phone is perfect nowwww yay. I can't use it right now though, previous owned put a lock pattern on the phone...

Replace lcd screen or motherboard?? Maybe? Maybe not??

Ok this one goes out to all you cool smart guys out there. I currently have two mt4g's. One is working perfectly fine with the "bad screen", as they call it, and the other is bricked, or no it has a failed pu is what someone told me, but it has the "good screen".
Anyway while just minding my own business on the internet one day I came across a video which shows you how to replace a lcd screen in a mytouch 4G! I was hooked. I could do this I said, it looked so easy! Sure you need some patience, which I got btw. So I was determined to do this, even ordered the tools from repairsuniverse. So about the fourth time watching the tutorial I began to wonder if it would be possible to just swap motherboards instead of disassembling all the way to the screen. Mostly because I still need a heat gun so i could remove the digitized then lcd screen.
So i guess my question is will swapping motherboards solve the pu problem in the mytouch with the good screen? And while I got you here has anyone ever replaced there lcd screen?? Is it worth it??
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Yes, if you put the good motherboard in the case with good LCD, you'll get one good phone.
Thanks for the response! This will make the job so much easier
repair options
sorry to piggyback you post but i had a similar question....
a friend of mine is giving me their broken mytouch 4g. it was working perfect but then she dropped it on her kitchen tile (bottom right corner hit i'm told) and now it will not turn on at all.....no cracks or anything, just a scratch in the corner. she says she tried a new battery and tried plugging into AC but no lights, nothing.
i've taken apart enough phones so once I get it i'm not afraid to do some swapping of parts.
my question is, those of you who have worked on this model, any indication where you think would be the problem? i'm hoping the lcd/digitizer is fine since its not cracked but we'll see....and i figured maybe i would just need to do a motherboard swap worst case? is there any other components you think could be shot after the drop? from what i've been able to find its just the 1 main mother board , correct? (meaning there is not 2 parts)
thought MAYBE i'll get lucky after opening it up, and verifying all the cables that possible some cables got jarred loose and thats why it wont respond but not holding my breathe on that.
thanks for the help!

Touchscreen dead strip!

I've noticed just today that there's a dead strip on the touch screen. It didn't do this yesterday. The Nexus 4 was dropped once from 2 feet high, but that was almost a month ago and everything worked fine until now.
The screen still looks beautiful, no dead pixels, no cracks, and the phone is in a protective case with a screen protector.
It seems to me that the digitiser crapped out, but I'm not sure why it happened so randomly.
A funny thing though is that when I drag something fast across the strip it works. And sometimes it'll recognise a touch as a long touch or two-fingered touch along the strip. Weird.
I attached a few touch test photos to show the issue.
Hopefully there's a fix. Has anyone else had this problem? And if you had to send it back to Google, was something like this covered under warranty? What should I do?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
You can try to replace the screen yourself or tell LG/Google to send a replacement via RMA. They have parts floating around Ebay
How risky/costly is it to replace it myself? And does anyone know if it's covered under warranty? Cause if is, it'll be cheaper just to get a replacement from Google.
Are there other ways to check if it is indeed the digitiser? I've seen that sometimes touch screen problems are software related. And if that's the case, it'll be easy to fix.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
And .... Out of curiosity, what does cause a digitiser to fail without the screen actually breaking?

Depends. If you follow the instruction properly, it works well. If you screw up, then Google/LG wont be able to help. A lot of people have done it and succeeded. There are great articles on the web. The price of a digitizer would be about $50-70. I MAY BE WRONG WITH THE PRICING.

In most cases no. Because it worked well and suddenly stopped working. Thus Google would say that its your fault. If you are somehow able to convince the Reps that it wasn't your fault, then there is some hope. I

One way is to remove it and put it to a tester or another motherboard and see if it works. But that takes a lot of time and money,

Anything. The phone might have overheaten to the point that it flashed a certain section of a digitizer. It may also be a battery problem that escalated. If you feel that it's software problem, flash a ROM a see if it works.
IMHO You should send it to LG and get it fixed for about $140~.
This problem should be covered under warranty. If you honestly haven't done anything to cause this damage. (I'm also clueless as to what a user could do themselves to make just one section of the digitizer stop working)
Then lasting 5 months or less would not be considered reasonable and you should be entitled to a replacement.
Remember it is down to the retailer to prove that you caused any damage.
And if you honestly did nothing and it just crapped out on you then you should have nothing to fear in sending it back for a warranty replacement
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
That happen to my iphone when it got water damage. But if you did not do anything wrong, it should be covered by warranty.
Ditto

Yeah, I think the overheating might have been what happened to mine. I was using a blackberry charger and I think it might have overheated my battery and fried a strip of my digitizer.

No drop or glass break.. Dead pixel just one..
Hi,

This looks like a dead thread, but Ill take a punt. I dusted my old Nexus 4 off the other day, which had exactly the same issue with the dead strip on the digitiser. I had tried replacing the screen and digitiser (I have up trying to get the original screen off the original digitiser). The issue remained, so I tried a full factory reset, but that also didn't work. I am now wondering if I should get a cheap motherboard, or try flashing the stock ROM again. Has anyone else had any luck with either?

[Q] LCD Appears Damaged

Hey everybody,
I bought this phone last week and installed a skinomi screen protector. I removed it after about 12 hours to try and remove some dust from underneath the screen. I set it aside to do it later and I powered the phone on without the screen protector, I was really surprised when I got a screen that said that the lcd appeared damaged.
Knock-on does not work at all, if I apply pressure to the right side of the screen it simulates a weird half touch to the right. Any ideas? I'll probably just add the phone insurance and get a new one unless someone has a fix.
Thanks

Touch screen Z3C

Just diagnosed a strange issue. After installing the touch screen protector I've noticed strange behavior of my phone. It seemed very unresponsive and I decided to ingage the glove mod. But the issue was still there . Tried to take off the screen protector, still the same s**. Then started the diagnosis and here it is??? How is that possible that screen protector do something like that?
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
My phone intermittently has the same issue, but horizontally in the middle of the screen.
Sometimes it works great and sometimes the touch just kind of lives its own life in that non-responsive area and makes touches all by itself.
I've made a video showing some of it when dragging lines like yours in an app called YAAMT. I could link to it later if there's any demand.
Right now my phone is in the repair shop for said issue. Not sure what they'll say, though, since it's an intermittent thing and they need to see it before they can confirm it...even though I've got the video. And sometimes the phone works great for days before the problem comes again.
To be clear, the screen protector did not cause this. Mine was like this out of the box.
I'll try to change my for new one. Now I tried to give you thx and had to touch it 3 times to make it work.

Ok guys so here is sort of a good new for all of u having the screen issue i just posted a screen shot of my phone screen earlier today showing the defect... Just moments earlier i droped my phone accidentally by a foot height or so and guess what my phone screen is now totally ok and functional and responsive. I have attached a screen shot of it now u can see...... So may be its just due to some lose connection internally which gets fixed by a drop or so (fingers crossed).... So its up to u people what u want to do( may be try a small drop) but i cant gurantee anything for u guys its up to u people i say again really i worked for me and i am happy for my phone now.......... Not so for me. I had it on the old build as well.
The repair shop exchanged the display and digitizer as well as the back glass on warranty. They also gave me complimentary screen protectors for both the front and the back since I had to wait two weeks for the repairs. It came back factory reset with the latest software update.
I've installed the protectors, and my phone is a totally different beast now. Incredibly responsive with all touches now. No more missed swipes, no more trouble typing and no more of the screen living it's own life.
In other words, in my book, this is clearly a hardware issue.

Well i˙m waiting for the tempered glass from the ebay and still on the older build . Don˙t know should i upgrade or not, don˙t like to change something that is so damn good . This phone is really as i expected that it will be, lightening fast and responsive, so happy with it don˙t see anything that i don˙t like .
