Nexus 6p tethering? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys was thinking about getting a 6p but do not want to lose the tethering ability that i had on my nexus 6, does anyone know if its the same process which is sending tether_dun_required 0 via command prompt or is this a no go with the 6p?

my 6P tethers fine without any workarounds on stock rom on TMobile
never seen the tether usage go up on my plans details

There is a mod to build.prop you can search for that enables tethering.

That's not required on the 6p. 5x it was I believe. I have VZW unlimited still and no build prop edit required. Tethers out of the box.

It is required on AT&T with my 6P

To answer the OP question.
You should be able to tether in the same manner that you were able to on the Nexus 6.
On Verizon, nothing to be done. It works out of the box.
AT&T needs build.prop modification.
T-mobile works and I'm not sure about Sprint.

My bad. Didn't realize AT&T needed the build prop edit.

My 6P on Nougat and AT&T tethers with no modifications. Works "out of the box" so to speak on an unrooted, bone-stock (other than Nougat) phone...

I am using the app foxfi and tethering via usb with pdanet installed on my laptop, and this is working also to hide tethering from the carriers confirmed working for tmobile.

Nexus 7 (2013) 4G/LTE stock image JSS15J (testing purposes)

Request if someone make and post a full backup of their stock JSS15J before the system update to JLS36C.
Because we've now learned that on latest JLS36C, and using any AT&T SIM in the US, the tethering option has vanished.
I believe tethering is still available on JSS15J but need to test what happens (build, bootloader, baseband) after update to JLS36C and flash back to JSS15J..
When I turned on my tablet out of the box it was at JSS15J. Using an AT&T LTE SIM pulled from a Galaxy Note 8 it still had the tethering option (need to verify to be certain). But this was before the update to JLS36C and latest baseband G00_2.25.1_0802.. After system update to JLS36C the tethering option vanished.
We also do not yet have any system images for Nexus 7 (2013) 4G/LTE so a full backup of JSS15J is also nice to have otherwise.
Many thanks in advance.

I disagree, for a couple reason, if you mean there is an option for AT&T SIM working with tethering in settings after update. But, maybe I misunderstood your meaning.
When I tested the AT&T LTE SIM from the Galaxy 8 it had tethering option before update (I think) and tethering was gone after update. Tethering working or not appeared to have nothing to do with the plan.
If your theory is possible, someone must show working tethering option on AT&T SIM. But that is impossible because I read elsewhere the Nexus 7 LTE is not recognized in the AT&T system as LTE device so AT&T is not yet aware of the Nexus 7 (2013) LTE device. If the device is not in their system it is not possible Google and AT&T coordinated tethering to work - and because no one has an example of tethering in settings after update on AT&T SIM.
Please correct me if I misunderstand or misspoke. Thanks.
Same thing happened to me. My account = 5GB DataConnect 5GB for 4G LTE Tablets
On the att.com/shop/wireless/plans/dataplans.html webpage
It says to the left of the girl on her tablet in bed "Data plans with Wi-Fi & tethering on the nation's fastest mobile broadband network. We've got you covered."
Now that is covered, this is what I found. When doing a Factory Restore, with SIM Card ejected, this is what I did.
Welcome >
Insert SIM card > Skip
Select Wi-Fi
Got Google? Yes
Google services > Unchecked "Bring apps, settings . . ."
Backup and restore > Unchecked "Bring apps, settings . . ."
This tablet belongs to . . . > Me!
Setup complete >
Settings > Wireless & networks > More
Ok so now I am in here. Tethering & portable hotpot show up
As soon as I plug in an AT&T SIM card, it disappears, never to be seen again until I do another factory restore.
I called AT&T and put the SIM in my iPad and they have to change the provisioning over to iPad from Android and Tethering was working fine in IOS. Back to Android (they changed the provisioning back), no go. Same thing even after another factory restore.
So it would seem, even if your account is allowed to have Tethering, if it is an AT&T SIM it will not work.

I tested a Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM and tethering and hotspot was available in settings.
I tested a Net10 ATT SIM and the tethering and hotspot disappeared again.
I conclude the update kills any possibility of any SIM on AT&T tethering in the US. But, I'd like to hear other experiences or workarounds.
Therefore, still looking to revert to JSS15J for more testing.

Yeah. I think Google pulled off all the JSS15J devices from sale on Google Play just to make sure no one has access to the JSS15J version. Any bets the JSS15J version allows tethering on AT&T?
Even though we have hundreds if not thousands of people with touch, gps, reboot problems, it seems the Google lawyers on on the ball. LOL
Just guessing.

Yes and no. Some people definitely no. Various fixes, various problems. GPS was fixed for everyone. But, lots of other issues remain.
I subscribed to the following thread.

So from what I gather, at the time of this reply, the only working AT&T tether option is still only FoxFi via USB or bluetooth. Anyone have newer info than that? I have FoxFi USB tether working on my laptop no problem, but my Nexus 7 is still out in the cold.

ATT Wifi calling and LTE Band 30

Two questions,
1 - Does the Nexus 6P have LTE Band 30?
2 - Does the Nexus 6P support the new Wifi calling feature on ATT.

As per GSM arena it does support band 30 http://m.gsmarena.com/huawei_nexus_6p-7588.php.
As for WiFi calling, I hope so.

I posted the WIFI calling question on the ATT Forums. This is the response,
wifi calling will only be available on phones purchased thru ATT is what has been said. You cant get HDvoice on non ATT phones either nor the nexus 6 which ATT did sell. You can bring your own phone but ATT is not going to make some features available to you to use.
I believe the only device that supports wifi calling on AT&T is the iPhone at the moment..

So even though you can buy an iphone thru apple and get it actyivated on att....you get the all att's supported feature even though the phone wasnt bought from att? However the google phone does not get the same support? That would be discrimination wouldnt it?
Actually.....I just called and the CSR atteampt to manually enter the provision for wifi calling and HD voice and she said it didnt work because it said my phone wasnt capable of the wifi calling feature. And the way it works she claimed is you provision my phone to do wifi calling and it will automatically enable the HD voice feature in tandem....but it wouldnt go thru
Since my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 was updated to MM OTA with AT&T it now has wifi calling and HD voice. I was wondering if now since my Nexus 6P was updated to Nougat and it has everything needed for Wifi calling and HD voice is there a way to enable them now on AT&T?

Wifi Calling on At&t Google Pixel 2 XL

Opened the Settings app earlier and there was a suggestion at the top to turn on Wifi calling. I'm on At&t and November update.
How did you get this to work? I've been trying to days to enable this option. I pushed "adb shell settings put global wfc_ims_enabled1" but to no avail has it worked.
I am on AT&T and have tried this with both a Google Pixel XL 2 from Google and Verizon. If you could give me any details of what your setup is like so I can try to enable this I'd dearly appreciate it!

+1 how? Very curious.
a screenshot showing the actual call going over wifi is needed.
unless ATT changed their mind in the last week, WiFi calling isnt available for the Pixel 2/XL, even if the option is enabled, the account has to be provisioned, and the phone needs the proper IMS profile, ATT to this date has refused to allow it.
This is the first I've seen the option even appear. Will test some calls and report back.

Looks like it isn't up and rolling yet, but the fact that the option appears has me hopeful. At&t still doesn't say that it supports VoLTE on P2XL, but we have that working, so perhaps Wi-Fi calling is coming soon.

Here's hoping. My apartment is on the bottom floor so reception is very spotty. What has been weird though is that if I start a call when I have reception and move to a spot in my apartment where there is no cell service, the call persists. So part of me thinks me enabling Wifi Calling from ADB may have done something?

Because idiots around the US have no idea what they're talking about then they say "VoLTE on AT&T only works with AT&T-branded Android phones or iPhones". As long as a manufacturer certifies their device with AT&T, and configure their devices with the proper IMS profile for AT&T's network, VoLTE will work. Google (HTC/LG) certified the Pixel 2 / 2 XL with AT&T for VoLTE and RCS, both of which work if all criteria are met (proper SIM card, IMEI updated in billing system, options turned on), and right now, 8.1 DP1/DP2 are needed to use VoLTE on AT&T's network, as the modem/IMS configuration was updated on the phone to support it.

VoLTE is enabled in Android 8.1 for AT&T. I just flashed the final factory image and it does indeed work. You do have to verify that your sim card is properly provisioned for VoLTE. As for the WiFi calling portion of this conversation, I still cannot access the "Wi-Fi calling" setting within "Mobile network settings."

Check to make sure your sim card supports it. If it does you'll wanna call att and have a technician make sure your account is provisioned properly. Also you'll need to make sure they have the IMEI of your phone.

Oreo Update killed my Cricket Hotspot!!!

I've been using my unlocked G6 on Cricket because hotspot works great. I made the mistake of updating to Oreo the other day and, of course, hotspot quit working. I can connect devices to the hotspot but can't get online. Diagnostics say DNS Failed. I've been down this road before with a few ZTE devices. Anyone know how the Oreo update could kill Hotspot ability?????
Any way to roll back to the point before I installed Oreo and the Sept. security update?
Bro saw some you tubers say to be careful with Hotspot on cricket if not added to account. They say cricket just turns off account.
Maybe call customer support and ask? Also try a different phone with your Sim and see if Hotspot works.
Good luck

Thanks for the response!! Set up my brand new NON-UPDATED G6 this morning and Hotspot works just fine with my Cricket sim. Just did a complete factory reset on the G6 I let upgrade to Oreo and it still won't hotspot with my Cricket sim. I wonder if it was Oreo or the Sept. security update that killed my Cricket Hotspot?
