Request if someone make and post a full backup of their stock JSS15J before the system update to JLS36C.
Because we've now learned that on latest JLS36C, and using any AT&T SIM in the US, the tethering option has vanished.
I believe tethering is still available on JSS15J but need to test what happens (build, bootloader, baseband) after update to JLS36C and flash back to JSS15J..
When I turned on my tablet out of the box it was at JSS15J. Using an AT&T LTE SIM pulled from a Galaxy Note 8 it still had the tethering option (need to verify to be certain). But this was before the update to JLS36C and latest baseband G00_2.25.1_0802.. After system update to JLS36C the tethering option vanished.
We also do not yet have any system images for Nexus 7 (2013) 4G/LTE so a full backup of JSS15J is also nice to have otherwise.
Many thanks in advance.

I disagree, for a couple reason, if you mean there is an option for AT&T SIM working with tethering in settings after update. But, maybe I misunderstood your meaning.
When I tested the AT&T LTE SIM from the Galaxy 8 it had tethering option before update (I think) and tethering was gone after update. Tethering working or not appeared to have nothing to do with the plan.
If your theory is possible, someone must show working tethering option on AT&T SIM. But that is impossible because I read elsewhere the Nexus 7 LTE is not recognized in the AT&T system as LTE device so AT&T is not yet aware of the Nexus 7 (2013) LTE device. If the device is not in their system it is not possible Google and AT&T coordinated tethering to work - and because no one has an example of tethering in settings after update on AT&T SIM.
Please correct me if I misunderstand or misspoke. Thanks.
Same thing happened to me. My account = 5GB DataConnect 5GB for 4G LTE Tablets
On the att.com/shop/wireless/plans/dataplans.html webpage
It says to the left of the girl on her tablet in bed "Data plans with Wi-Fi & tethering on the nation's fastest mobile broadband network. We've got you covered."
Now that is covered, this is what I found. When doing a Factory Restore, with SIM Card ejected, this is what I did.
Welcome >
Insert SIM card > Skip
Select Wi-Fi
Got Google? Yes
Google services > Unchecked "Bring apps, settings . . ."
Backup and restore > Unchecked "Bring apps, settings . . ."
This tablet belongs to . . . > Me!
Setup complete >
Settings > Wireless & networks > More
Ok so now I am in here. Tethering & portable hotpot show up
As soon as I plug in an AT&T SIM card, it disappears, never to be seen again until I do another factory restore.
I called AT&T and put the SIM in my iPad and they have to change the provisioning over to iPad from Android and Tethering was working fine in IOS. Back to Android (they changed the provisioning back), no go. Same thing even after another factory restore.
So it would seem, even if your account is allowed to have Tethering, if it is an AT&T SIM it will not work.

I tested a Straight Talk T-Mobile SIM and tethering and hotspot was available in settings.
I tested a Net10 ATT SIM and the tethering and hotspot disappeared again.
I conclude the update kills any possibility of any SIM on AT&T tethering in the US. But, I'd like to hear other experiences or workarounds.
Therefore, still looking to revert to JSS15J for more testing.

Yeah. I think Google pulled off all the JSS15J devices from sale on Google Play just to make sure no one has access to the JSS15J version. Any bets the JSS15J version allows tethering on AT&T?
Even though we have hundreds if not thousands of people with touch, gps, reboot problems, it seems the Google lawyers on on the ball. LOL

AT&T typically does not support phone functions on tablets, so I'd guess no. Although the line between tablets and phones is a bit blurred, these days.
I'm not quite ready to have a mobile plan for my tablet (and really don't need it 99% of the time). And I already have the WiFi only version. But an AT&T release might mean some better sales for the N8, and better dev activity.
If this can be flashed with a EURO ROM for phone capabilities I will be first in line. :good:
Great news....
I guess this might bring down the price a bit.
If I can get either N5100 N5110 version for under $450 and flash Euro ROMS to make calls, then put me on the line as well.

The 7.0 Tab worked fine. Pretty sure the 10.1 does as well. No reason an 8.0 wouldn't. A phone is a phone, either it has voice capabilities or it doesn't regardless of the size. The only reason tablets don't work on ATT otherwise is the strip them of the feature from either hardware or software. Might have to ditch the IMEI if I remember correctly from my 7.0

I believe the IMEI is the issue. The network recognizes the device as a tablet using the IMEI, and then won't support phone services on the device.
That's the reason right there.
I know on the nexus 7 3g version It's thought to be a hardware limitation in the radio. Also they were never able to produce a modem capable of voice. Flashing to closest compatible radio caused a baseband hard brick with generic IMEI. Obviously the N7 was also lacking ear speaker etc, however they were able to get SMS/MMS completely working with SMS using AT&T's network. I personally used it as my smartphone replacement using my SIM for data & network texting while using google voice/groove IP for my phone services. Had to enable voice capable in bools.xml to true IOT unlock the native dialer & forward calls from the AT&T phone number to my google voice.
With that being said, I think redpoint is 100% correct in saying that if it does not work hardware limitations aside, it will be because AT&T is blocking the IMEI on their network. The N7 wasn't blocked because it was an unknown device on the network but if AT&T releases a 3g capable Note you can be sure it will be logged into their system and easy to track, just like trying to use an AT&T smartphone on the mediaNET system (which I was also using for a while on the N7 with no problems for the same reason I stated above)

Yep, and backing up then deleting the IMEI solves that issue as you then have a generic IMEI that is not seen as a tablet they recognize and allows you to make calls. Its been done by many here at XDA including myself.

Also ya gotta take into account the fact att might not have the 10.1 on their regrestry. Thats how i was able to use my N7. If ATT registers the 8.0 cuz theyre going to be carrying it they can then block it. The international one may still be safe though if thats the case.
Edit: heres a good link where they explain and compare how Att detects devices on their network and how they can block it or change plans accordingly http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446373

Just download GrooveIP from the market, and it uses your Google Talk Phone number to make calls on your wifi/3g/4g network...
Call quality is fanatastic, at least for me here in chicagoland...You can even make and recieve using your BT headset!
I'd like a mobile version instead of the WiFi version I just picked up this week. Looks like it may go back during their return period.

No, Well not directly since that is probably illegal but if you delete your imei the device will assign a generic one automatically that carriers dont seem to detect as a tablet or atleast a specific tablet. Infact I wonder if they even bother blocking Euro devices like the 5100 since they do not sell it.

Or you can just do what I mentioned in my last post and they won't be able to block you by IMEI since it will no longer be recognized as one of the devices.
IF the hardware and software on the tablet permits making calls.

im pretty sure spoofing the IMEI is a felony though if caught. Thats why each device has a specific IMEI.
Here is the culprit:
https://android.googlesource.com/de.../core/res/res/values-mcc310-mnc090/config.xml
That's for Cricket wireless, but there's a similar one for ATT.
What that modification does is tell the Android system that there are no valid tethering network interfaces when an ATT sim card is inserted. So it's removed from the settings menu automatically because tethering is no longer "supported" by any of the network interfaces on the device.
These config files are compiled down into /system/framework/framework-res.apk.
Here is my chain of events.

To: consumerblog at att.com
Cc: robert.n at talkandroid.com, phil at androidcentral.com, David Segura , customercare at tech360.att-mail.com, attcustomercare at att.com
This email is directed to Greg Belaus or the current Consumerist at AT&T.
I am one of the lucky few that have purchased a Google Nexus 7 LTE and am a current AT&T customer with 3 Smart Phone devices and 3 Tablets, all with expensive Data Plans through AT&T.
My concern (before I return the Google Nexus 7 LTE) is why the Hotspot and Tether options disappear when an AT&T SIM Card is plugged in. I have the 5GB DataConnect Tablet plan that includes these features. When I setup the device (without the SIM Card installed) the Hotspot and Tethering shows up in my settings. As soon as I plug in the AT&T SIM Card, they disappear, never to be seen again unless I do a factory restore. Only then do I have the options back, until I plug in my SIM Card again.
I have contacted Technical Support and they have verified that my device is provisioned properly and that I have Tethering and HotSpot included in my 5GB Data Plan, but are unable to restore this functionality.
I have posted this issue on XDA Developers, Android Central, and Talk Android, and will keep reaching out until I get a clear answer (I almost CC'd randall.stephenson at att.com as well).
Please investigate why this is disabled, and if it not something that I will be able to use (since I am paying for the feature), I will need to determine my best course of action to terminate my Tablet contract as it appears to me that AT&T is blocking features that I am paying for in my plan.
Regards,
David Segura
9/18 Received an email from attcustomercare at att.com with the following Case ref:_00DE0czFk._500E0703wB:ref that it was being looked into.
9/19 Contacted Google Nexus Support by Phone. Was informed that this was being escalated by Google Support. Case 5-5927000001711
What needs to be determined is if this is an accident or intentional. As I am paying for Tethering and Hotspot, I have a serious issue with this so far and it seems that there would be nothing AT&T can do to my device to get it restored. Short of Google correcting the issue and issuing an OTA Update, but this would mean that AT&T will need to work with Google to fix this
Unless this issue gets exposure from some people calling in or from Android websites, I am sure this will be a low priority
Wow! Why does this not surprise me it happening on an AT&T sim card. This coming from a very long time AT&T customer who purchased my last carrier subsidized phone a year and a half ago. I have always received excellent customer support but I wouldn't bet any money on it getting resolved in the next 30 days. Hopefully I'm wrong! At some point, out of curiosity, I need to stick my sim back in the N4 and see if tethering is still there because I tether my N7 often using the One X. Good luck!
It's Google’s to fix
The Nexus 7 LTE comes from Google, it is obviously a Google issue. I would expect a month.
It would be illegal for AT&T to prevent you from tethering, if they do you can file a complaint with the FCC. AT&T won’t try to stop you anymore after Verizon lost in court and paid $1.25M.
Use some tethering app meanwhile.
OP,
Thanks for the find and it indeed works.
I have decomplied the framework-res.apk file, removed the att restrictions from there, replaced the file with the recompiled file i created and sure enough, Tethering is there and working.
I have attached the modified framework-res.apk file, maybe someone can make a flashable zip for people who would like to enable this on AT&T.
Please note that this file will only work on JLS36C.
If you would like to try this for yourself:
1) unzip the attached and save it so internal storage
2) from TWRP go to terminal commands and copy the file over to /system/framework and reboot.
I would recommend making a backup to the original framework-res.apk file for future OTA updates. You will need to roll back to that before applying any OTA.

Went to the AT&T store today. Asked if my Nexus 7 was compatible with LTE. The clerk searched Google for AT&T and Nexus 7 LTE. She said yes. LOL
So I asked if my IMEI was going to activate properly. I have a prepaid AT&T SIM activated on 2012 Nexus 7 3G and when put into Nexus 7 2013 4G/LTE it will *not* access LTE.
So she took one of their SIMs and put it into my Nexus 7 4G/LTE and it showed LTE coverage. I said yeah, so what. What happens if I activate an AT&T SIM on my Nexus 7 4G/LTE device? E.g. not on one of your approved LTE devices.
She said she did not know and they could not tell. So, she got the manager. The manager said they have no way to check the IMEI because they have no database they can search for LTE compatibility.
However, they said if there was any problem they would insure LTE was working if I wanted to activate in store. The discussion touched on modifying IMEI or activating in another LTE device if the Nexus 7 4G/LTE did not automatically work on LTE. I mentioned the hotspot feature was also disabled by Google software, and they were not pleased.
They were trying to help and I thanked them for the information. But, I left with my T-Mobile SIM in my Nexus 7 4G/LTE. I will ponder what to do until the free 2G/30 days pass on T-Mobile expires. AT&T is selling data only on these tablets so they should not care how its used, hotspot or not. AT&T is really dropping the ball.
With all this SIM swapping, I also considered what happens if I put in a second new T-Mobile SIM in my Nexus 7 4G/LTE. Do I get another free 2G/30 day pass? LOL
No $100 bill credit either

Guys good news.....here is the solution to get tether back!!!!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45781140#post45781140
It is February 2015. My nexus 7 build KTU84P will not tether with an att sim card in it.
This has been going on literally for YEARS. Google will never fix this.
Lawsuit? FCC action?
I'm having issues with Isis. I have an enhanced SIM, I've installed rootcloak with Isis added. But I keep getting the message "Your phone can't connect to the 3G or 4G mobile network right now. Please try again later." I've tested my mobile connection and it works... Any ideas? I've searched this issue and can't seem to find a solution. I'm currently running the leaked 4.4.2 (BeansTown106) version with Isis 2.01.00-build.15.30

Isis tells me I don't have an enhanced SIM, even though I was running it fine on 4.3 and I do. I think it's just not compatible yet and they are really slow. I emailed their support a few days ago asking when they would be compatible with KK and got no response whatsoever yet.

I dont have a enhanced SIM (nor do I know what it does/is) but I have installed the leaked 4.4.2 rom and the nc2 firmware. I lost data connection as well. I have the 3g/4g icon pop up but the arrows are not there and it will not connect to the internet. I have tried using mje. m19, nc4, nc2 modems to no avail. I have also tried using Hyperdrive ROM and the 4g icon wont even show up. It was working fine on my stock rom yesterday before I upgraded to KK.
Anybody with some insight on this topic, help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
PS I searched through several forums and have not found any solid answers.

To the best of my limited knowledge, the enhanced SIM is really just the SIM that comes with the new phones. I had an old SIM that I transferred to my N3 and it didn't have the secure element that is required to run Isis. It's interesting that it works on 4.3 but not 4.4 after my discussion with the Verizon rep the other day (when he almost busted me for being rooted). He asked me what version I was on and I told him 4.4.2 and he seemed to think it should work.

Solved - at least in my case
The issue in my case seemed to be the theme I had installed. I had to restore a nandroid that I had made prior to installing the All Backs Black theme. After the restore I was able to open and complete the Isis set-up...
So I recently purchased s7 edge g935fd from Taiwan. The phone was working fine there in Taiwan. When I came back to the States, however, the phone seems to have trouble connecting TMobile's LTE mobile data. The LTE goes on and off , no matter where I am. The phone still says that it is connected to LTE even when the data is not loading. I tried to reset the APN setting but no avail. I also tried that sim card on my old ASUS Zenphone 2 and the LTE worked fine so it is probably not the sim card's fault. The weird thing is that I can still call, text, and even use 3g network, it's only LTE that is not working properly. Anyone got a solution to this?
Have you gone to settings>mobile networks and checked if it's set to auto connect?
I took off unlimited data from my account because **** sucks here In Aurora Colorado. Isn't worth an extra 20 a month when I got WiFi at home and at work. Plus 2gb free is cool with me. Still got bingeon

I used to have a note from Verizon Unlocked, but seems they've done that on and off signal quite a lot. Since their phones from T-Mobile have everything pre-installed, you can't even delete or edit their APN.
That's why I got a phone with then GS7E works like a charm.

Oh well. Like I said even with that sht I can NEVER load a video on Netflix on my lte, I would miss flights before this crap loads. I like t-mobile because it's the only one that's "good" in my area if t-mobile is "good" I don't want to know what's bad. That's cool it works for you. But I rather pay $55 a month for text talk and 2gb of free data

I have a 935FD on TMO and never have had a problem. I actually have a 935T also, just made sure the APN's matched. The FD however, has never shown an LTE icon although it shows connected to LTE in settings. This could be to being rooted and running a custom rom. But to your main question, again, I've had no issues.

So you bought and international version? I think I may have to do the same for the Note 7 but not sure how compatible the international versions are with T-Mobile

Yes, I bought an International version after realizing it would probably be some time before the 935T got root. From what I understand, and don't quote me on this, but the international version of just about anything is compatible with TMO or any other GSM network. The Note 7 should be just as compatible as my 935FD is with TMO.

Do you get wifi calling with the international version? It also seems Samsung won't honor the warranty and SquareTrade won't as well since Samsung isn't.

No, and that is the only reason I've kept my TMO version is for the wifi calling. If the buildings where I work weren't blast proof we would have cell signal inside them. Since we don't, the wifi calling is our only Option, besides landlines of course. For all these reasons we're talking about is why I'm looking at getting an HTC 10. I'm getting tired of all the Samsung lock down on stuff.

Lol that's the exact problem I have at work there is absolutely no service in certain parts. It's pretty sad for T-Mobile. We're basically forced to get there version.

Opened the Settings app earlier and there was a suggestion at the top to turn on Wifi calling. I'm on At&t and November update.
How did you get this to work? I've been trying to days to enable this option. I pushed "adb shell settings put global wfc_ims_enabled1" but to no avail has it worked.
I am on AT&T and have tried this with both a Google Pixel XL 2 from Google and Verizon. If you could give me any details of what your setup is like so I can try to enable this I'd dearly appreciate it!

+1 how? Very curious.
a screenshot showing the actual call going over wifi is needed.
unless ATT changed their mind in the last week, WiFi calling isnt available for the Pixel 2/XL, even if the option is enabled, the account has to be provisioned, and the phone needs the proper IMS profile, ATT to this date has refused to allow it.
This is the first I've seen the option even appear. Will test some calls and report back.

Looks like it isn't up and rolling yet, but the fact that the option appears has me hopeful. At&t still doesn't say that it supports VoLTE on P2XL, but we have that working, so perhaps Wi-Fi calling is coming soon.

Here's hoping. My apartment is on the bottom floor so reception is very spotty. What has been weird though is that if I start a call when I have reception and move to a spot in my apartment where there is no cell service, the call persists. So part of me thinks me enabling Wifi Calling from ADB may have done something?

So you're saying that after the ADB command was set, and you're in an area that legitimately has 0 cell service (not just very low/nearly unusable)? Screenshot of this, please?

Sorry, I'm not sure I'm reading this correctly. Please clarify... Are you saying that VoLTE is working on the Pixel 2 on att? If yes, please please please tell me how.

It's working on the developer previews. Just talk to an AT&T tech and have them provision your SIM for it.

Yes, it works fine, if you meet all of AT&T criteria.

At&t criteria? What's the criteria? I've Google searched and only found information saying you can't have it unless you have an att branded phone.

Because idiots around the US have no idea what they're talking about then they say "VoLTE on AT&T only works with AT&T-branded Android phones or iPhones". As long as a manufacturer certifies their device with AT&T, and configure their devices with the proper IMS profile for AT&T's network, VoLTE will work. Google (HTC/LG) certified the Pixel 2 / 2 XL with AT&T for VoLTE and RCS, both of which work if all criteria are met (proper SIM card, IMEI updated in billing system, options turned on), and right now, 8.1 DP1/DP2 are needed to use VoLTE on AT&T's network, as the modem/IMS configuration was updated on the phone to support it.

VoLTE is enabled in Android 8.1 for AT&T. I just flashed the final factory image and it does indeed work. You do have to verify that your sim card is properly provisioned for VoLTE. As for the WiFi calling portion of this conversation, I still cannot access the "Wi-Fi calling" setting within "Mobile network settings."
I am on 8.1 on AT&T but the unlock version of the phone... I don't ave the VoLTE

Check to make sure your sim card supports it. If it does you'll wanna call att and have a technician make sure your account is provisioned properly. Also you'll need to make sure they have the IMEI of your phone.

I just bought a Verizon Pixel 2 XL and Volte doesn't work. I'm on 8.1.0 February security patch. I thought that the Verizon Pixel was exactly the same as the Google Store version, other than the locked bootloader. Does anyone know how to get this working? I've already called At&t twice, and they say it should be working.

Is advanced calling enabled in settings/Network &internet/Mobil network/advanced. ??
If yes, then look at the link 2 posts above yours.
