Would you still choose the note edge today over the note 4? If yes why and if no why. Include your variant and which OS you're running thanks. Or if you would choose a different phone that came out at the same time as them two
I like the original phone as it was delivered, but there's no way in hell I'd ever let those idiots at Samsung push an update to it again, knowing what I know now.

Not true, I have the exact same Canadian model as you and my phone never reboots. I've had this phone since kitkat and I've installed custom ROMs, Kernels and I've also ran stock on kitkat, lollipop and marshmallow. No reboots. Maybe you just flashed the wrong thing or didn't do regular cleaning/backups (wiping cache, dalvik cache, factory resest)

It's only misinformation if it's not true.
I also am not the only one who had the problem as evidenced by a large number of people who were factory updated from 4.4.4 to 5.1.1 and posted about it on the web.
At least in my case the phone asks for password saying that it's needed after reboot, but it doesn't actually reboot. You can check if it's the same for you using an uptime widget such as this.
As for the question from the OP, yes, I would still prefer the Note Edge. The main reason is that I like to be able to control my phone and media player using the edge screen, while keeping the navigation software map (Waze) uninterrupted.

I'm having a hoot with my phone and what it can do. I didn't quite realize just how "niche" the phone was, and as a consequence, there isn't much development interest in it. Still, finding it a great phone.
I'm now 6.01 without any noticeable issues that I can tell, but perhaps I'm not sophisticated enuf to really know. Biggest beef is that the battery life sucks especially if your using it continuous, as in playing some game or other. Can actually watch the percent meter go down. Lol.

I see you love the phone but not the operating system .... battery hog.
I've heard that about Marshmallow.
I wonder what sort of garbage Samsung is running in the background to cause this?
It's probably why a fair number of people who love the phone root and install their own operating system.

Yes, after 1+ year of use I would, over any phone.
Performance, screen, camera, edge panel, S-pen, all awesome!
Love the phone but should have opted for the unlocked version instead of the carrier (AT&T) version.
I'd buy another if i had the extra cash. I love this phone. Very few share my thoughts. But in all honesty, f*** them. I use the phone , it suits me. Thats all that's matters!! I wish the dev was better, or for an upgrade to 6.1.1 with the theme store. But lets get real, this phone was a limited edition type thing. I knew that coming in. It still turns heads and i still get good battery life.

I have the Edge great phone...just Crap support and firmware from Samsung...I had random reboots but installed the latest update (Rooted it, Xposed) and its much better, not one reboot on new firmware --DPH4
Maybe I would give my thoughts on this, but I've been stuck for 3 says now, trying to unlock the bootloader. I'm on the Verizon variant. I've actually successfully unlocked the bootloader, I'm stuck on flashing the MM firmware without bootloader. The file is corrupt, and the md5 is no good. The user that uploaded the file won't reply, it's been 3 days. So I'm stuck!

ok i just gotten my edge , was on lollipop , played for a while , installed some apps , suddenly when the battery reach 25 % it started to reboot loop non-stop , ah what a bummer , i updated to MM OTA , finger cross ....hopefully no more reboots
i just recently picked up 2, ones blacklisted and has mmc_read failures but was $100 and bought for donor parts, the second i traded a dell laptop for and it is fine but had random reboots and lockups, flashed both back to stock 5.1 and then put riverrom on them both and they seem to be ok now, the donor does still reboot and fail more then id like, but the second one seems fine now after 2 days
I still like this phone. My biggest complaint lately is battery life (got a new battery), and an inordinate amount of screen burn-in. I can see on light screen where the lock-screen notifications usually are, as well as other sections of the screen that are burned in from static images.

I hate that almost every app seems to want to crash. Google chrome always flickers and goes black when trying to switch pages.
All the extra software crap they added that I have no use for.
I thought about rooting and doing a custom rom. But I don't want to lose all my text messages. A lot of work and important messages that come in handy.
My battery life has got worse. Phone just seems slower.
I have never subscribed to this though, but it makes me wonder some times. Manufacturers do software updates when new phones are about to came out, so your old one starts to suck lol. 4.3 update for no major reason on the s4. You suffer for 3 months or so, than the s5 comes out to fix your problems.
I know Apple just did it to the iPhone 4 recently. We have 5 of them at work and they have crapped the bed performance wise after the update.
You can restore text messages with Titanium Backup, you could also try doing the mk2 unbrick method to reflash mk2 and see if that makes things better.

Are you running the stock ROM or a custom one? In my experience these things typically happen when overclocking the CPU or low RAM. If you are running stock the answer may not be so easy unless there are several apps with very high RAM & CPU consumption running. However with 3GB of RAM it's kind of hard to see that.
It's stock. Nothing has been done to it whatsoever. She said also that, sometimes she would bump it just by handling it that it would shutoff. So the only thing I can think of is maybe an app that she downloaded that's causing this. She also stream movies in her phone by way of a third party torrent. So hope me telling you this will get some gears going.

If just bumping it causes a shutdown than that sounds hardware related, no app would do that. It could be some damage in there. Sometimes it's a defect, age or a stiff knock to the ground can do it if you don't have a good case. That's a worse case scenario because once these things start it's all downhill. If you have someone locally that repairs phones, take it to them & get a quote. If they want anymore than $100 I'd get another phone.
Ok. But what about it just random shut off? The bumping of it is just some times.
Only thing else I can tell you is to open the task manager and see how much RAM is being used. If it's running near full capacity as in 2.7 or 2.8 find out which app is the memory hog and dump it. This is just grasping at straws because like I said, I don't see this device crashing frequently like legacy devices do.
Ok. Will do and I'll post back.

Nothing that she has on her phone isn't anything out the ordinary thars using a lot of ram. What she has in there isn't contributing to her random reboot because those apps were on there before it started doing this. Her Android version is 5.0. I don't know if a older version could be contributing to this. When I asked her to check for updates, it just told her no updates available at this time, check back later. So now what?

The OS is fine, 5.0 is what I have and I have had no issues. I have read in some other posts around here from people who upgraded from KK and later had problems, mine shipped with 5.0 already installed. If you want to downgrade to stock 4.4.4 there are threads around here to tell you how to do it. If the issue persists after that I'd start shopping.

If you haven't already. ..factory reset the phone. She'll have to reload contacts and apps...but if they're backed to to Google...they will be reloaded once she signs in with her google account.
The factory reset has "fixed" many issues with upgraded phones.
And then there is the obvious...is the battery properly seated?

All Verizon Note 3's are SIM unlocked. You can use any carrier's SIM...but...you may not be able to get 4G LTE data because other carriers may use frequencies not available in the Verizon Note 3. Check with YOUR carrier first.

My wife and I both received S7's on Verizon on release day. We moved over from Sprint so I don't know if Verizon does anything strange and different with their phones.
I've noticed that my phone reboots at night a few times a week. After a reboot I have to login via PIN rather than fingerprint, and that happens a few times a week in the morning. Last night exactly at 3am the phone lit up the room as it rebooted. I've not paid attention to whether my wife's phone does the same thing.

business sense was good stuff lol those were the days! but yeah in line with this topic, my phone has only rebooted once and that was because my camera started freaking out for some reason. it's been good ever since, though. that camera thing has happened to me on my note 4 before as well, so it's probably just a Samsung thing.

I have a vzw GS6 and it never had that issue until i updated from 5.0.2 to 5.1.1. Since then it randomly reboots. Sometimes 0 times a day and at the most was 3. Its always random when it does it to. I only had pandora running and its done it all the way to 10 apps running and it reboot. I upgraded to 6.0.1 hoping it would resolve this but it still does it. Got to be on the software side.
I've only seen mine randomly reboot maybe 3 times in total. I didn't notice when it happened, but later on after since it asked me for my pin since the device was restarted etc. Wasn't sure if it was normal or not, maybe it's some spooky Samsung ghost magic going on to install some back-end security patches.

If your phone sits idle for a few hours it will ask you for your pin. The best way to verify it was a random reboot is to look for a gap in the battery graph. That sometimes work if it rebooted while charging though.

Ghosts or random reboots? I'll enter my pin every morning if it means not dealing with random reboots. Anyway, the pin in the morning thing is due to trusted places being on and active. So it is normal.

I specifically have trusted places disabled for both of us because of children's little fingers.
She confirmed that she never has to provide a PIN in the morning. The only times have been when an update have rolled out, which she usually doesn't do until I nag her.
I'll update here if I figure out what is going on. I really really really don't want to factory reinstall, which is likely the first things Verizon will ask me to do.
My only random reboots happened during pairing BT with my avalon hybrid. It would work for a couple of minutes and then go crazy. I also have entune installed. Suspect entune as the culprit, but can't say for sure yet. The May update fixed several issues. No connection issues now, but there are so many variables it is hard to pin issues or the claimed fixes on one update.

I feel your frustration, but have to say one thing here. I've been using Android since the G1, I've rooted every device I've owned (too numerous to list) until now. The GS7E is really quite amazing, even without root. I had planned on leaving it stock as long as I could tolerate it anyways, so I was not entirely crushed to learn it was locked down so tightly. I mean, had root been a requirement for me, I'd have gone with a Nexus - where bootloader unlock is a right, not a gift.
I do miss proper hosts based ad blocking, but Samsung/Android Pay make up for the shortcomings of root-free ad blocking. The ability to change dpi without root (although it breaks Android Pay, but a quick reboot sets that right) and the AOSP like appearance of the Good lock screen helps me not miss Xposed. And the fact that things simply work, without the additional burden of wondering if it was something I flashed causing weirdness on my device, means I can spend more time playing with my phone... and less time backing up, flashing, restoring, adb'ing, fastbooting, installing/updating drivers, and debugging.
Would I have it the other way around? Certainly, but either way is a compromise, and there is no going back. So, perhaps it's good (for me) that we don't have root. Or, I might already be missing Samsung/Android Pay, and the stability of the stock rom.

I could not disagree more. Mods are even more important in device forums where there is no active development, as the entire device forum becomes a pissing contest where everyone who doesn't have anything to contribute just argue with each other - making it even harder to find what useful information there is.
I appreciate the work mods do here due to the fact that the mods here are volunteers who don't get paid (with anything but insults from people like you apparently).
So if you are mad at the mods for removing something you posted, perhaps you should read the forum rules to understand why your post was removed. That and take it to PM, instead of *crapping on all mods in a public post.
I upgraded to this from a note 3 and I'm devastated to learn the bootloader is locked. I'm tempted to return the device or sell it after its payed off. We should make a group that shows interest in not locking the bootloader of the Note 6 do when it's released at least there was a movement.

Screen is too small and the quality is garbage compared to OLED, otherwise I'd agree.

It is not that small bigger than the s7 that I had. The oled and amoled is great but it feels more fluid on the HTC with this LCD. Rooted and custom ROM, that beats the s7 and edge any day of the week. Battery is going great now. I am at 51 percent with 3 hours sot unplugged since 8 this morning and now it is almost 8.

My phone said the same "enhancements and improvements". Best I can do at the moment.:
Software Version: MMB29M.G930VVRU2APE1
The current software update gives you the most up to date Android™ security patch on your device.

Yep, installing now. Pretty impressive of VZW, if these are indeed the latest (June) security updates that just landed on my Pixel C.
Yep, version APE1 also for me.

Im glad for you. My wife has the same phone and she was the same, " what are you talking about? I have no problems." Until, "my sdcard is messed up fix it please? And can you make the freezes stop?"
This is 300% guaranteed the last phone from Samsung i will ever buy!!

lol... from your signature: "Its not the device....its operator error."
But seriously... A lot of people have this phone and aren't having the issues you are describing. I have the S7. It works perfectly (except the whole no root deal). But my girlfriend on the other hand also comes to me with these random issues.
Says the screen won't turn on, and the camera keeps crashing. Ok, so I look at it. The (cheap) case that she bought from Amazon is holding down the power button so when she presses it, of course nothing happens. And when the screen doesn't turn on via the power button she spams the home key, which is configured to launch the camera after a double tap. Hence, the camera keeps doing funny things. So yeah... operator error. But she's a smart girl. I told her about those things and now everything is fine. She got a new case and we turned off the double-tap home key camera shortcut. Problems solved.
Just gotta find the source of the issues man. These phones are legit. Good luck
Good for you, bye.

disable update nag
Is there a way to disable the update nag prompt? I am not going to update my phone, in the hopes that someday we will see a root option. I can swipe to remove the prompt, but it remains perpetually in my notifications. Is there a way to remove this?

Nothing for a specific notification. You could try long pressing on the notification and seeing if it lets you disable notifications for the whole app but chances are it would be something like SystemUI or other system app so even if it did let you disable all notifications for the app, you may miss others like the USB connection choice for example.
Disable ota
Package disabler pro.. It's a paid app but it's cheap enough and it certainly does the job.. you can disable system update plus partially debloat your phone if careful not to disable the wrong process.. it tells you what you can or cannot disable.. it won't free up space but it will stop the update notifications.. it's envitable that you'll accidently update sooner or later if you don't disable the nag notification..
A lot of times it centers around installed apps as well. Sometimes, all it takes is one to cause issue with the rest of the phone. Did you check on any "same" apps you installed? I've had this thing for a year now, some issues now and then, but was primarily due to apps..uninstalling, updating or finding a supported app was often the solution.
My wife has has an S7 also (a year into Verizon's Samsung devices as well), the only time there's issue is when she doesn't update the apps she has installed. A few of the same apps on different phones, but no problems.
As far as SDCARD issues, what type of card/brand? I had issue with SanDisk cards in my previous samsung phones, so I switched to only using samsung cards...no problems whatsoever since I've changed card brands.

What? This phone was only released a little over 3 months ago.
sorry, meant with Verizon's Samsung over the last year. GS7 since it's been out. Still no notable issues either way...at least nothing worth crying about.
We were with Sprint before for over a decade. Had Samsung devices since the GS"II" (yeah, that's #2), not many issues over the years at all.
