Are you running the stock ROM or a custom one? In my experience these things typically happen when overclocking the CPU or low RAM. If you are running stock the answer may not be so easy unless there are several apps with very high RAM & CPU consumption running. However with 3GB of RAM it's kind of hard to see that.
It's stock. Nothing has been done to it whatsoever. She said also that, sometimes she would bump it just by handling it that it would shutoff. So the only thing I can think of is maybe an app that she downloaded that's causing this. She also stream movies in her phone by way of a third party torrent. So hope me telling you this will get some gears going.

If just bumping it causes a shutdown than that sounds hardware related, no app would do that. It could be some damage in there. Sometimes it's a defect, age or a stiff knock to the ground can do it if you don't have a good case. That's a worse case scenario because once these things start it's all downhill. If you have someone locally that repairs phones, take it to them & get a quote. If they want anymore than $100 I'd get another phone.
Ok. But what about it just random shut off? The bumping of it is just some times.
Only thing else I can tell you is to open the task manager and see how much RAM is being used. If it's running near full capacity as in 2.7 or 2.8 find out which app is the memory hog and dump it. This is just grasping at straws because like I said, I don't see this device crashing frequently like legacy devices do.
Ok. Will do and I'll post back.
Sorry for being slow. Would that be under storage?

No, just long press the home key. Then when recents pop up select task manager, then RAM.
Nothing that she has on her phone isn't anything out the ordinary thars using a lot of ram. What she has in there isn't contributing to her random reboot because those apps were on there before it started doing this. Her Android version is 5.0. I don't know if a older version could be contributing to this. When I asked her to check for updates, it just told her no updates available at this time, check back later. So now what?

The OS is fine, 5.0 is what I have and I have had no issues. I have read in some other posts around here from people who upgraded from KK and later had problems, mine shipped with 5.0 already installed. If you want to downgrade to stock 4.4.4 there are threads around here to tell you how to do it. If the issue persists after that I'd start shopping.

If you haven't already. ..factory reset the phone. She'll have to reload contacts and apps...but if they're backed to to Google...they will be reloaded once she signs in with her google account.
The factory reset has "fixed" many issues with upgraded phones.
And then there is the obvious...is the battery properly seated?

Not sure what you mean by "unlocked" since none of the Verizon phones were SIM locked. If you mean "rooted," you said it was on Android 5.0....that can not be rooted, so it's not rooted now.

All Verizon Note 3's are SIM unlocked. You can use any carrier's SIM...but...you may not be able to get 4G LTE data because other carriers may use frequencies not available in the Verizon Note 3. Check with YOUR carrier first.

Ok great. So resetting it isn't a factor. I'll check the frequency.

I have this problem too, I think certain apps can cause it as well as certain thing crashing on your phone. Other times it just sprint. I have learned to deal with it and explain it to those I trying to message. Or just call them.

You have that same problem because you wipe level two ram. Literally it is the cause of the problem. Reboot, send text, it works, clear level 2 ram, sendtext, it fails.
Don't clear level 2 ram is the fix.

At the end of the day, we're all responsible for our own phones, though when the op is given advice, its probably best to give your feedback in a slightly different approach as opposed to the defensive, "why not? Yada yada yada"
Yes. RAM 2 clears background and aggressively closes active apps, it even says so before you clear it, lol. When it comes down to it, I think we're all right at certain parts of this story. I for one and as well as many others can fix such a simple issue, but not everyone has the patience to do so, thus, it was stated to not clear level 2 ram. Which is fine, but the other posters saying "why not" shouldn't take it into account that he's talking to every single last epic owner. He's not. And for those that say they believe other apps can cause this issue, you are indirectly correct-- in a sense, other apps could be a factor, but also, does not apply to every single last epic user. With this said, op, all I have to add is this, if you can avoid clearing level 2 ram, please do, if you feel like clearing it, go right ahead. Clearing level 2 ram consistently does more harm than good though, so keep that in mind. I personally only clear level 2 ram only if I rape my epic with too many apps running, the most vital processes will continue to return. Anyway, I hope all of us were helpful in one way or another, good luck.
Exactly Shiny. It depends on what you are clearing level 2 RAM with. If you use a task killer with an ignore list, and you have system apps on that list, clearing level 2 might not interfere with texting. But blindly clearing all level 2 will at some point cause this.

I didn't say clearing it fixed the problem. I was asking why not because its never seen it cause an immediate problem. My text would do what the op's does before I clear anything. I was asking why not because it clearing that is causing further damage I would like to know. Since I see no immediate problems I see it fine for me to do it continuesly but if there is some underlying thing I would like to know before I continue doing it.

I never said that you had specifcially said clearing level 2 ram would have fixed the problem. It doesn't create an immediate problem, but it can. And same here, on being in the op's situation before, and yes clearing it too often isn't optimizing your user experience, Android manages apps and processes on its own without anyone's help by default, that includes prioritizing what is important, as well as re-prioritizing at a given time-frame, while also of course, giving us the human right to terminate apps we are not actively using. Just because you don't see the immediate problem, doesn't mean your phone is performing the way it properly should be. If you think wiping level 2 ram continuously is healthy for your epic, you might as well wipe your battery stats continuously while you're at it.
P.S. if you knew about programming and how things work, you'd understand that everything has a life-cycle, pre-maturely ending life-cycles gives birth to all sorts of hidden bugs.

Anyone got any OTA files yet? haven't found anything yet searching google.
I sorta wonder if I should upgrade. I actually reset all my Google apps back to the factory because the upgraded ones (a little while back) were using too much memory and too many wakelocks and this and that. So I'm wondering if I need an even smarter Google Now and whatever else is new. Right now, the phone is fast, the battery lasts forever... nothing is broken.

I really couldn't tell ya. If I had been able to isolate the app, I wouldn't have needed to resort to the full system wipe. I've got most of everything re-installed except for a few apps that really didn't use anymore. I'll pay attention as load a few more to see if the problem comes back and I can relate it to a specific app.
Will anyone try to unlock our bootloades or find an exploi on kitkat? I had to get a new RAZR and it came with 9.20.1xt926 so as of now I'm stuck locked and stock. Sure would be awesome of we got another chance with 4.4

If you don't unlock, and leave your bootloader unlocked it can. If you have the check box checked then the bootloader remains locked. So if you get caught with a bad flash or anything else that causes a bootloop there is no way to gain access to the bootloader and run fastboot.
Not off to a great start. I've had my 3rd crash triggered simply by browsing to the reddit nexus 9 board. Now it appears to be on a forced cache erase after the consecutive crashes.
From this we can safely say nobody in Google pays any attention the forum moaning otherwise they might have noticed this issue.
Anyone get an OTA for the LTE version yet? They haven't posted the factory images which scares me a little that LTE might get left behind. The 5.0.2 links went up for both at the same time.

Mine's still running really warm and it's losing power over USB just by being on. I'm watching the battery drain simply from the screen idling on Google Now. Come the **** on Google, heat and battery drain should have been primary concerns.
Edit: Fortunately though, it seems like the entire device is running buttery smooth, which is literally a first on stock Android for me. Even my Nexus 6 hiccups without a custom ROM and that has the S805 and 1 more GB of memory.
Still no OTA for LTE on 5.01 -> 5.02 ...
What the hell is Google doing... firstly releasing almost beta Lollipop that on our Nexus have serious issues.. after waiting and being the last device to be updated still no upgrade to LTE which is more expensive and deserves at least same support.
If our model is left behind, I will surely not buy a Nexus device ever again.

LTE takes time. I wouldn't worry about it. I bet factory images are up within a day or two. I'm an LTE owner too, so I'm in the same boat. I'm just happy it actually started rolling out, as it started to look like it wasn't happening. This is a much bigger update than 5.0.1 -> 5.0.2
Updated this morning. So far so good
So far, it's definitely an improvement on performance but it remains to be seen with this is another cache-wipe factor or something. One of the first-impression fixes is that the light sensor seems to actually work now, while it was almost useless before.
I noticed the stock kernel is now on 2,5GHz high and that both cores are allways on, which i am not sure if it was happening on 5.0.x. I remember Franco noticing it on Nexus 6 5.1 too, so i guess it's a common practice by google to not turn cores off anymore.
Well so far so good. I never had major issues before. OTA side loaded fine. Did a factory reset to set up fresh. Now that everything is set up I'm just waiting for it to charge completely. It did get warm installing and updating everything, but no issues so far. Everything went smoothly.
There's a new apk named 'Who Am I?' That is disabled by default in this update. Turns out it's a widget that literally shows you the time and what your name is. Maybe it's for people with dementia or short term memory.
The way things have been going, most of us might have needed that widget by the time this update got to us if we'd waited much longer.

lol... from your signature: "Its not the device....its operator error."
But seriously... A lot of people have this phone and aren't having the issues you are describing. I have the S7. It works perfectly (except the whole no root deal). But my girlfriend on the other hand also comes to me with these random issues.
Says the screen won't turn on, and the camera keeps crashing. Ok, so I look at it. The (cheap) case that she bought from Amazon is holding down the power button so when she presses it, of course nothing happens. And when the screen doesn't turn on via the power button she spams the home key, which is configured to launch the camera after a double tap. Hence, the camera keeps doing funny things. So yeah... operator error. But she's a smart girl. I told her about those things and now everything is fine. She got a new case and we turned off the double-tap home key camera shortcut. Problems solved.
Just gotta find the source of the issues man. These phones are legit. Good luck
Good for you, bye.

Nothing for a specific notification. You could try long pressing on the notification and seeing if it lets you disable notifications for the whole app but chances are it would be something like SystemUI or other system app so even if it did let you disable all notifications for the app, you may miss others like the USB connection choice for example.
Disable ota
Package disabler pro.. It's a paid app but it's cheap enough and it certainly does the job.. you can disable system update plus partially debloat your phone if careful not to disable the wrong process.. it tells you what you can or cannot disable.. it won't free up space but it will stop the update notifications.. it's envitable that you'll accidently update sooner or later if you don't disable the nag notification..
A lot of times it centers around installed apps as well. Sometimes, all it takes is one to cause issue with the rest of the phone. Did you check on any "same" apps you installed? I've had this thing for a year now, some issues now and then, but was primarily due to apps..uninstalling, updating or finding a supported app was often the solution.
My wife has has an S7 also (a year into Verizon's Samsung devices as well), the only time there's issue is when she doesn't update the apps she has installed. A few of the same apps on different phones, but no problems.
As far as SDCARD issues, what type of card/brand? I had issue with SanDisk cards in my previous samsung phones, so I switched to only using samsung cards...no problems whatsoever since I've changed card brands.

sorry, meant with Verizon's Samsung over the last year. GS7 since it's been out. Still no notable issues either way...at least nothing worth crying about.
We were with Sprint before for over a decade. Had Samsung devices since the GS"II" (yeah, that's #2), not many issues over the years at all.
Would you still choose the note edge today over the note 4? If yes why and if no why. Include your variant and which OS you're running thanks. Or if you would choose a different phone that came out at the same time as them two

I've had this phone since kitkat and I've installed custom ROMs, Kernels and I've also ran stock on kitkat, lollipop and marshmallow. No reboots. Maybe you just flashed the wrong thing or didn't do regular cleaning/backups (wiping cache, dalvik cache, factory resest)

I just explained to you that I did not have reboots on stock as well as rooted on all android versions. It's not good to spread misinformation. "You" are having reboots, not everyone else that updated

It's only misinformation if it's not true.
I also am not the only one who had the problem as evidenced by a large number of people who were factory updated from 4.4.4 to 5.1.1 and posted about it on the web.
At least in my case the phone asks for password saying that it's needed after reboot, but it doesn't actually reboot. You can check if it's the same for you using an uptime widget such as this.
As for the question from the OP, yes, I would still prefer the Note Edge. The main reason is that I like to be able to control my phone and media player using the edge screen, while keeping the navigation software map (Waze) uninterrupted.

I like the original phone as it was delivered, but there's no way in hell I'd ever let those idiots at Samsung push an update to it again, knowing what I know now.

I'm having a hoot with my phone and what it can do. I didn't quite realize just how "niche" the phone was, and as a consequence, there isn't much development interest in it. Still, finding it a great phone.
I'm now 6.01 without any noticeable issues that I can tell, but perhaps I'm not sophisticated enuf to really know. Biggest beef is that the battery life sucks especially if your using it continuous, as in playing some game or other. Can actually watch the percent meter go down. Lol.
btw, throwing out a big hi to all you Albertan's. I'm was Edmonton native, born and raised.

I see you love the phone but not the operating system .... battery hog.
I've heard that about Marshmallow.
I wonder what sort of garbage Samsung is running in the background to cause this?
It's probably why a fair number of people who love the phone root and install their own operating system.

"Would you still choose the note edge today over the note 4?"
Yes, after 1+ year of use I would, over any phone.
Performance, screen, camera, edge panel, S-pen, all awesome!
Love the phone but should have opted for the unlocked version instead of the carrier (AT&T) version.
I'd buy another if i had the extra cash. I love this phone. Very few share my thoughts. But in all honesty, f*** them. I use the phone , it suits me. Thats all that's matters!! I wish the dev was better, or for an upgrade to 6.1.1 with the theme store. But lets get real, this phone was a limited edition type thing. I knew that coming in. It still turns heads and i still get good battery life.

i am getting one , whats a good basic rom to root or remain stock ?
I have the Edge great phone...just Crap support and firmware from Samsung...I had random reboots but installed the latest update (Rooted it, Xposed) and its much better, not one reboot on new firmware --DPH4
Maybe I would give my thoughts on this, but I've been stuck for 3 says now, trying to unlock the bootloader. I'm on the Verizon variant. I've actually successfully unlocked the bootloader, I'm stuck on flashing the MM firmware without bootloader. The file is corrupt, and the md5 is no good. The user that uploaded the file won't reply, it's been 3 days. So I'm stuck!

ok i just gotten my edge , was on lollipop , played for a while , installed some apps , suddenly when the battery reach 25 % it started to reboot loop non-stop , ah what a bummer , i updated to MM OTA , finger cross ....hopefully no more reboots
i just recently picked up 2, ones blacklisted and has mmc_read failures but was $100 and bought for donor parts, the second i traded a dell laptop for and it is fine but had random reboots and lockups, flashed both back to stock 5.1 and then put riverrom on them both and they seem to be ok now, the donor does still reboot and fail more then id like, but the second one seems fine now after 2 days
I still like this phone. My biggest complaint lately is battery life (got a new battery), and an inordinate amount of screen burn-in. I can see on light screen where the lock-screen notifications usually are, as well as other sections of the screen that are burned in from static images.
