Hi,
I've finally received my Nexus 4, and quickly upgraded to Android 4.2.2
One thing I noticed is that my notification LED does not seem to light up when receiving email from the Gmail app, nor does it light up while charging the phone using the LG charger.
Edit:I've just noticed a white LED notification for email... I didn't notice it before because it was very low-key and had a large time interval.
Is it supposed to be like this, or is the phone faulty?
P.S. Does the LG charger make a rattling noise for anyone else when it is not connected to the phone?

I know that the LED is not supposed to light up when charging (some custom ROMs have this feature though) and the charger "rattling" is a known issue.
The gmail thing is software side, for sure. So I'd say your phone is fine

the led notifications on stock rom aren't that great. they have a very long pause in between each flash so it's hard to see.
download and use lightflow. i purchased it from the play store and it was definitely worth it. you will get the ability to customize how and when the led flashes and for which app you'd like to receive notifications from.

I hated LightFlow on my GNex, and I still hate it on my N4. I much prefer CyanogenMod's custom LED notifications. They actually work like they're supposed to, and don't get stuck on.
Light Flow works great on my N4. Have a look at the thread on it in the Apps forum, you'll see the number of people having problems is very small.

If you use light flow make sure to use their widget because with out it you will think that it was staying on when you didn't mark am e mail or sms read.

Light Flow does not drain battery at all IMO
Hi,
I don't know what you are doing but for me Light Manager works perfectly...
The LED works only with screen off. Have you set Light Manager to start at boot in advanced settings?
In test settings, activate the LED then turn off the screen... I've just tested and it works...

Re,
Yes rooted...
Without any apps that control the LED, the LED works? In settings / Display, the LED indicator is enable?
Try the free version of Light Flow to see if it works and to see about battery drain...
It's weird, sorry I have not another ideas
Stock led is working.. Its just darn slow.. I mean it blinks for every 5-6 seconds, for example when i receive sms.. And i need and want faster blink rate and different colours...
Ill try to root and then use Light Manager...
p.s. If i root, i will still be able to get ota updates right ?
I have just rooted my phone... And still nothing.. Light manager is not working . I am trying test mode and it is not working. Stock led is working ,but it is slow... Can any one help me ?
p.s. Stupid mother****[email protected]#!#[email protected] . It is working.. I just recieved sms and it is working.. But it is not working in test mode... I dont know why.. But i dont care Thanks anyway
Well there was a thread that was going, but the OP decided to post warez links and it got closed. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601850
I made an app with Tasker App Factory that does what the original post explains in a video (http://m.androidauthority.com/moto-x-green-notification-331710/), for those that don't have/want Tasker.
This is the first time I've shared anything that I've made in Tasker, and I can't say why it has some of the permissions it does, honestly. If anyone cna elaborate on why it does has those default permissions, that'd be great.
DISCLAIMER: As I stated above, this is my first app. I tested it on my Verizon Moto Maker edition Moto X that is rooted on 4.4. I take no responsibility for what happens to your phone or anything you do with this app. It worked fine for me, but I make no promises it will work for you.
Latest Version: https://copy.com/uUWpwXnGdJXpPIC
- Latest one adds in a few more options for how the light is displayed, and a brightness setting.
Original Version: https://copy.com/9w9TlRH2yt3L3BC
Install, run, and accept the root request (root is needed for the shell command, just as it is in the Tasker profile). It will also run the command when you boot, and starts working a few seconds after the phone turns on.
Note: If you decide you don't like it and uninstall the app, you will probably need to reboot after uninstalling to disable the LED.
Hopefully someone finds this useful. I personally don't care for it, but I like making stuff in Tasker and thought I'd give it a shot.
I just installed this. It works very well, thank you.
Installed and works. But isnt it supposed to switch off the light once the phone is charged?

It is set to display the LED when it is charging or full. When I get a few minutes I can update with other options.
I updated OP with a new link, newer version with more options.
very cool! Thanks!!!! Seems to be working just fine.
If you plan to add anything, a slow fade on and off would be a nice addition as well!

I don't know of a way to change the behavior of the LED other than what's there. It can only do things defined by the system software at this point. If anything else becomes available, I'll see about updating it.
Why does it need the permission to unlock the device?

I have no idea. I referenced it in the first post. Tasker seems to have that for all apps and I couldn't remove it. I have a lock screen PIN on my phone and it is not disabled by the app.

Yes root is required to run the shell command.
I don't think I would bother with this for normal use however if someone stuffs a wireless charging coil inside the phone then I think it becomes very useful.
Still waiting for my coil to arrive before I crack into a phone.

Yeah I'm still undecided. I like it with the brightness nearly all the way down, like below 10. It's subtle but I can still find my phone in the dark when next to my bed (the active display shuts off from 12am-7am).
With the new update its useful to know that your battery is fully charged once the led has shut off. There is no other way to know with this phone unless you turn the screen on

Also true. Someone posted that one of the options was to blink while charging and stay solid when it gets full, but it doesn't seem to work properly. It just blinks until it's full and then shuts off, from what I read. If they find a way to fix it I'll add it in.

latest version that allows setting different lights for charging and full doesn't work....light never goes on. Previous version worked. rooted Verizon developer edition.
I have a moto G4 (16GB) dual sim...
I use moto LED enabler to allow notigications to use the LED.
It sucks however, it seems to only ever work once, abd then never again until the next reboot.
I've tried lightflow with various different settings, and can't get that to work at all..
Does abyone know of an alternatve app that works ?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply, it at least confirms the problems I'm having as well.
I use ElementalX App to enable the charging LED, and it works pretty well.
I've seen some posts about people having luck with LightFlow although I can't get it to work at all..
Anyone have the exact settings for LightFlow?
I tried to search for this topic over the Internet but got even more confused. Can someone help me with the following question?
Does Essential phone have LED notification?
I know it has a charging light and it is working fine.

Yes
Weird. You have more settings in that screen shot that I do. What version? Just got mine a few hours ago. It received two updates and is on nmi81c
Nevermind it is getting an update that adds that now
I'm on NMI81C too. So that explained why I don't see those extra settings either. I only see "Pulse Notification Light" and "Battery Charging Light". I'm wondering what does "Pulse Notification Light" mean?
BTW, when did you get your update?

Well, today I found the LED notification does exist but not consistent. I saw the LED lights up and flash slowly (very slow!) for some applications and sometimes. It does not always light up for the the same application as my Nexus 6P did before. It looks like the ROM needs some work.

I think with O you have to set the choice for each app. I believe it's in the notification settings for each app
someone tried lightflow? otherwise i will do in the next days..
I tried. Not working well either. I'm with NMI81C though. I will try to load Oreo beta today.

I am using Lightflow with no issues. I am on the oreo beta, but did have it working prior to upgrading. That was on the original build as I am on sprint, and once I sideloaded the other 2 builds I decided to go for the beta as well.

I sideloaded Oreo beta. Everything went smoothly. But the LED notification has not changed. The charging light is still working. I enabled "Allow notification dot" and Blink light". But LED notification does not light up when a text message arrived (using Textra).

I just side loaded Keep beta. I saw settings on "allow notification dot" on each app and they are turned on. But I still could not get LED notification. (For example, Textra). It worked well on my old Nexus 6p.

The Essential phone most definitely has a notification light. It's hidden under the left-most portion of the tiny speaker grill. You'll only notice it when you have a notification or it's charging.
It has multiple colors. I've seen blinking blue for notifications, green for charging and I think red for low battery, if I remember correctly.

You are absolutely correct. The LED light works fine when changing. But as for notification, it does not work persistently. For the same app, sometimes it worked but the other times it didn't. Also for some other apps they never worked. (Those apps have notifications and worked well on my old Nexus 6p, like Textra, Facebook, etc.)
Another thing I found is that the blink interval seems to be too long.
