[Q] LED Notification - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've finally received my Nexus 4, and quickly upgraded to Android 4.2.2
One thing I noticed is that my notification LED does not seem to light up when receiving email from the Gmail app, nor does it light up while charging the phone using the LG charger.
Edit:I've just noticed a white LED notification for email... I didn't notice it before because it was very low-key and had a large time interval.
Is it supposed to be like this, or is the phone faulty?
P.S. Does the LG charger make a rattling noise for anyone else when it is not connected to the phone?

I know that the LED is not supposed to light up when charging (some custom ROMs have this feature though) and the charger "rattling" is a known issue.
The gmail thing is software side, for sure. So I'd say your phone is fine

the led notifications on stock rom aren't that great. they have a very long pause in between each flash so it's hard to see.
download and use lightflow. i purchased it from the play store and it was definitely worth it. you will get the ability to customize how and when the led flashes and for which app you'd like to receive notifications from.

I hated LightFlow on my GNex, and I still hate it on my N4. I much prefer CyanogenMod's custom LED notifications. They actually work like they're supposed to, and don't get stuck on.

Light Flow works great on my N4. Have a look at the thread on it in the Apps forum, you'll see the number of people having problems is very small.

If you use light flow make sure to use their widget because with out it you will think that it was staying on when you didn't mark am e mail or sms read.

Elelinux-6.2.0-RC0 trackball and LED issues?

Hi,
I finally took the plunge and installed this rom and must say it's great, thanks!
Everything is working good thus far except the trackball does not light up like when I had 2.1 Sense (VillainROM12). It would flash briefly and rapidly and then go, whereas before it would remain lit until I had read the message. Likewise, the amber led would flash but that's gone too. I'm using Handcent as my SMS app and I've set it on in the settings like I did before.
Can someone tell me how I can get these features back please? Thanks.

Notification light

Hi Nexus 10 owners,
Love my Nexus 10 but I have an issue with the notification light under the screen.
It was working fine when I first got it on Friday, with it dimming on and off when an email is received.
But since yesterday, it hasn't light up at all, for any notifications, and I do have the "Pulse Notification Light" checked in setting.
So I was wondering if anyone else have any problems with the notification light? Could it be a bug, or perhaps my light broke after the first day?
Thanks in advance for any response.
I might suggest trying https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coolbeans.ledtester&hl=en to see if your light still works

Thanks for the suggestion.
Just tried the app and there's no light.
However, could it be that this app doesn't work on the Nexus 10 yet?

Yea it might be possible that app doesn't work; may want to see what an actual N10 owner has to report though
Works fine on my N10, only flashes white though, regardless what colour I pick.

So I guess it's really just my N10 then.
Thanks though.
No problem, try reflash with stock images and you might get lucky. My Nexus 10 is buggy as sh** and I put it down to 4.2. It'll all get sorted out soon enough, hopefully yours is just a bug too. Hope you solve it.

UPDATE
Just reset my N10 and now the notification light works again.:victory:
Guess it must have been one of the app interfering with the light.
BTW, when I tested it with a LED tester app, it can actually show green, red, blue and purple lights.:good:

If I understand right, he just flashed a factory 4.2 image from Google, without any OTA updates.
You can get the factory software from the Google developer site and you can download it to your nexus device in case anything gets messed up.
By "put it down to", I mean I blame 4.2 (Android version on the Nexus 10) for all the bugs I'm having. It's a new OS, and this multiuser stuff amongst others means some pretty major changes so I expect it to be a little unstable for a while. Still a better state than honeycomb was when I bought my XOOM on launch day, boy was that a mess.
You're right about the lights, I just got it to work with all the different colours, cyan and then purple look nice

UPDATE #2
The notification light is not working again
Reset my N10 again, then performed a LED light test each time I install a new app.
Until the last app installed, the notification light was working, then after a few minutes it stops working again.
So I guess it's not really caused by 3rd party apps.
So I ask again, has anyone had problem with their N10's notification light?
Still hoping that it's a bug instead of just me having a defective unit.
Thanks again!
I'm having the same issues. Sometimes the LED seems to be working, others it's not. I installed LED tester and again, sometimes it works fine and others not at all. I have tried to spot a pattern to see what causes it to stop and start and have drawn a blank - no idea. I have since installed light flow but this has not helped. Seems to me that there is either a software bug and we haven't yet figured what the trigger is, or there is a dodgy hardware batch (I hope it's the former!)

I think I've found the trigger. If I turn the device completely off, and turn it back on with the charger plugged in, notifications work. If I turn it back on with the charger unplugged, notifications do not work.
Other things I have tried which made no difference included factory reset and factory reflash.
Can some other folks see if their behavior matches mine? I have a replacement device being shipped to me, but if this is a software problem I'd rather not swap hardware. I'm very curious to hear if there are any devices that have a working LED under both boot up scenarios.
I think you are right. LED notifications were working ok when I had a freeze in google now. I restarted (on battery) and tested the notifications - no LED. I plugged in the charger, restarted the system and retested - LED working again. Looks like we have a workaround and a confirmed software bug rather than a hardware fault.
I'll test when I get home, but, I've only ever noticed the light when my tablet is plugged in, so it could be the same for me too. Shouldn't be a major problem, will get fixed in the next update as long as Google are aware.

I'm not entirely sure, there are people who are claiming that their LED works 100%.

Just tried this but still nothing.
Called Google today and they are sending me a replacement.
Ok, this is ridiculous.
Just unplugged my N10 and now the notification light is working.
So apparently it's working randomly.
Hopefully my replacement device works 100% of the time.
BTW, are replacement devices new, or refurbished?

Frustrated with Android Push notification

Hi
I just switch from IOS.
The only thing that annoyed me so much is the current Android Push notification. When I turn off the display screen, and let them idle for a while, push notification always delay for at least few minute. I did a test with my ipad mini, and the notification from email, facebook is basically real time. In addition, iOS display will turn on and display the notification so I can see, how do I do something like this in Android.. I only heard a delay sound with no display.
I have tried to increase the heart beat internal to 5 minute, check the connection. I still experience the delay of push notification. When I unlock the screen, everything seem to be back to normal, but that wasnt the point of push notification.
I am using CM 10.2 nightly with Franco kernel atm.
Please let me know what I can do to improve this frustrated experience.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2072930
Read this thread and check if it's the problem you have. Some Nexus 4 have an issue with delayed notifications over wifi (emails, whatsapp etc...).
If that's the case with your phone too, try turning off wifi optimisations, or see the other solutions mentioned in the thread.

I don't have a problem with the push notification on 4.2.2. If i had that here, it's only the connection thing here hehehe... , don't know theres troubleshoot with the delay on 4.3 fw. Haven't try it yet :fingers-crossed:
And about the notification that appears to show like ios device, you can use metro notification or popup notifier on playstore.

Solution seems easy enough, don't use nightlies or change kernel

LED notifications not working....

Hey all. New Vzw G2 here. I have clean rom on this right now and just loaded up aicp as well and neither rom has working led notifications. The led works it charges red, blinks green on boot up, and flashes white on waking up the screen with double tap.
I have tried multiple notification programs from the play store and tried to test out the led but nothing is working...
Am I just missing something obvious here??
Any help would be appreciated.

I know that this sounds like a no-brainer, but we sometimes forget to check the simple things. Check your settings under display and make sure you have the notification switch "on" and then download and try light manager from the play store.
The only thing I could figure out to get LED notifications to work was to use a 4.3 based rom which has the proper API's for notification apps. IMO I traded the IR functionality for one which lets me setup my phone to actually have notifications. No idea what the AICP rom is since I have a D801 and the VSW G2 is all different for whatever silly reason but Light Flow works great on PA.
Thanks all still no such luck. So weird. Enabled and disabled the notification in display tried light manager and light flow still no go. For real I don't get it. I know the light works but only for system notifications like charging battery low knock on etc. SO weird. Grr

Can you test a different rom?
I've tried aicp and clean and I'll try another here soon. 4.2.2 hasn't worked and an AOSP 4.3.1 hasn't worked I can't figure it out.

Could my issues be anything to do with still being on the most recent stock firmware baseband? I have a rule now to never accept OTA updates after my S4 screwed me over. I thought I read there was an OTA for Verizon at some point....
Sent from my LG-VS980 using Tapatalk
Have you tried backing up your data and trying the stock rom? I've also noticed that some things don't function properly on some custom roms, especially if it's not stock. I know you said you've tried other roms, but at this point, it just has to be checked through trial and error.
Make sure Pulse Notification Light is enabled, Use custom values is disabled and Battery Light is disabled. I have Root Mode and Reset color before change enabled on Light Flow and anything else significant disabled.
For the stock rom, Google backup was screwing up with the led notification. I had that problem.
I disabled Google backup and wiped the phone.
During initial boot when it says to back up with Google I deselected it and the led notification worked.
Not sure for custom rom.
Good luck

Hmm! Well, I am going to try this. I have plenty of TWRP backups, I'll run a fresh install and see if not using google restore fixes the issue. If it doesn't, I'm STUMPED!
I sure hope it works, this is the ONLY issue I have, I LOVE this phone otherwise, but this is a pretty big issue, I never know when I have messages waiting!

HOLY CRAP - If I could THANK you a million times I would. Deselecting restore from google WORKED. Booted CleanROM up as a fresh install and tried out the lite version of LightFlow, and BAM, LEDs worked. Must have brought some setting over from all my Samsung devices I owned previous. Never had an issue going from the S3 to Note2 to S4, but going to an LG, must have had issues.
THANK YOU !!!!

Seriously! I was about to try to return my phone, that would have been a hassle and a half. I LOVE my G2, Best phone I've had, I wish there were more cases for it for the Verizon version, I'm a minimalist guy and there is like one case on ebay that fits that bill. Oh I digress!
I switched from GS3 to G2 and let Google restore my settings and apps. My Light Flow (and Light Manager and every other LED app under the sun) just would not work. I just couldn't figure it out... it worked just fine on the GS3.
Finally, after disabling the auto restore of settings and apps, I did a factory restore; and now Light Flow works. Well, my email insists on green rather than the colour I set for it, and I can't seem to get the calendar notification LED working but everything else LED related now seems to work (mostly all 3rd party IM apps) including charging, charged, sms, etc.

LED notification light

I tried to search for this topic over the Internet but got even more confused. Can someone help me with the following question?
Does Essential phone have LED notification?
I know it has a charging light and it is working fine.

Weird. You have more settings in that screen shot that I do. What version? Just got mine a few hours ago. It received two updates and is on nmi81c
Nevermind it is getting an update that adds that now
I'm on NMI81C too. So that explained why I don't see those extra settings either. I only see "Pulse Notification Light" and "Battery Charging Light". I'm wondering what does "Pulse Notification Light" mean?
BTW, when did you get your update?

Well, today I found the LED notification does exist but not consistent. I saw the LED lights up and flash slowly (very slow!) for some applications and sometimes. It does not always light up for the the same application as my Nexus 6P did before. It looks like the ROM needs some work.

I am using Lightflow with no issues. I am on the oreo beta, but did have it working prior to upgrading. That was on the original build as I am on sprint, and once I sideloaded the other 2 builds I decided to go for the beta as well.

I sideloaded Oreo beta. Everything went smoothly. But the LED notification has not changed. The charging light is still working. I enabled "Allow notification dot" and Blink light". But LED notification does not light up when a text message arrived (using Textra).

The Essential phone most definitely has a notification light. It's hidden under the left-most portion of the tiny speaker grill. You'll only notice it when you have a notification or it's charging.
It has multiple colors. I've seen blinking blue for notifications, green for charging and I think red for low battery, if I remember correctly.

You are absolutely correct. The LED light works fine when changing. But as for notification, it does not work persistently. For the same app, sometimes it worked but the other times it didn't. Also for some other apps they never worked. (Those apps have notifications and worked well on my old Nexus 6p, like Textra, Facebook, etc.)
Another thing I found is that the blink interval seems to be too long.
