It can be because some particle or your phone cover could be touching, clean the surface of sensor it should work fine.
if cleaning sensor is not solving the issue then do a hard reset

it happens to me also.whenever i take my phone out of my pocket, sometimes it will not recognise my fingerprint, then i manually unlock the phone with pattern and from the next time onwards it works with fingerprint. i think because of some dust it doesn't recognise the fingerprint.

Method 1:
1. Place the palm of your hand on the screen of S4. Make sure the phone is unlocked, because it won’t work on the locked screen.
2. Swipe your hand across the screen in either direction, left or right. You should hear a camera shutter sound along with a notification appearing on screen saying “copied to clipboard”. You can find the screenshot in your photo Gallery.
(make sure the “Palm motion” option is turned on. To on/off this option, go to Settings -> Motions and gestures -> Palm motion)
Method 2:
simply press lock key and home button at the same time. Hold both the buttons at same time till you hear the camera shutter sound.

Palm swipe works, it's just not as sensitive as it was compared to the S3/Note 2. You need to apply a bit more pressure.

working perfectly here..
And it must be working fine for both of you.
Cause there is logic for d2w and glance view.
If phone's upper part / proximity sensor is cover by finger or something, screen wont wake..
its logic for screen not wake in pockets.
Try it.

Hello all,
If you are also victim of phone lock security please read on:
Few days ago, my phone started asking me PASSWORD instead of PATTERN. Due to this i was not able to start my device as i had encrypted the phone and checked the option "Pattern required to start the device".
If you have faced the same problem, read the solution below:
Think of Pattern dots as normal T9 dialer where top-left dot is '1' & bottom-right dot is '9'.
So if you have kept Pattern as 'Z' then corresponding Password is 1235789.
Another e.g if Pattern is 'L' then corresponding Password is 14789.
Thats it, now your phone is unlocked/booted

Thanks. That works! However after boot completed, I went to reset my pattern, reboot, and now my pattern isn't recognized..!! I think I'm done..?
---------- Post added at 10:49 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:44 AM ----------
When I input wrong pass, it quickly says wrong. But when I type right one, it's checking for a while, like it's trying hard to decrypt, then fails.
Try the steps of OP again

After I followed this method I chabged my pattern and since then it's working properly whenever I reboot.
You can try again the steps in OP and this time don't set pattern, try with any other method pass/pin and check.
Later again set pattern and check
Man, I'm telling you I'm being asked for a pattern now and mine won't do. I think I'm done.

I'm wondering how you do with a 4x4 or 5x5 pattern? How does it calculate numbers this time?
1 2 3 *
4 5 6 #
7 8 9 0
For 4x4, would it be like this? I have a phone that's so. Is there a way to trigger this "bug" so we can test it?

I am not sure about other patterns. 4*4 and so on are usually available only in custom roms. I faced this issue twice once on my phone and once on my wife's phone. Phone was encrypted in both cases. Both phones were Moto (Moto g2 and Moto G4). May be encryption and Moto OS does not go along always.

Why double tap or any number of taps??
If you tap on your screens, you may have a chance of mistakenly opening an app!
This following solution is more practical:
"Swipe home button" in Play store. An easy and practical way to get to home screen, works well.

How's battery usage? Is it significant?
Also, I'm using the version you posted but it's not working when the screen is off. I'm sure I deactivated all app-killing process. I don't think it's this.

Not on Samsung, but you can use an alternative.
Go to settings> accessibility> dexterity & interaction> easy screen turn on.
Switching on the option will allow you to unlock the phone while on table or on a surface just by waving your hand above it.
Note: if your phone is locked by fingerprint or passcode it just will lighten up the display. then you'll have to give the passcode or finger but it'll make you free to press any physical buttons.
