What do you want to see in a kernel? - OnePlus X General

Hi everyone,
As some of you may know, I maintain two kernels right now, Swell and Intoxicated Boeffla. The issue here is one produces astounding battery life, but some people run into stutters and stuff like that, while the other produces fantastic performance and okay battery life but is limited by being based off of Boeffla. My point? I want to start fresh yet again, I want to introduce one more kernel before I call it quits, and I want YOU to shape it from the very start... So I leave you with one very important question... What do you want to see from me?

I'm not an expert in this... but keeping your approach in thermal controls - Swell is really cold! - while achieving a good battery/performance balance, seems to be good for my personal use. :cyclops:
And Alucard or ElementalX governors! (I don't have the slightest idea how difficulty can be to implement such a thing - I'm just a noob who likes to tweak and experiment new settings!).

1. Stable.
2. Depending on individual - good to have 3 settings or/and profiles - a. Balance, b. Performance, and c. Battery.
3. Many features e.g. Stable governors, IO, tweak charge voltage.
4. Smooth like butter.
I am not sure why i tried all kernel on my Sultan cm13 but got fc. Only blu_spark is most stable so i always switch back.
For your swell, i got fc on zzmoove. Other than smartmax, whats the other stable governor? I think should only keep the stable governor.
Lastly, i thank your for your hard and excellent work.

I would be very interested in a performance oriented kernel from scratch. I don't care much for all the other governors, I think that one should stick to well known and tested governors like interactive and ondemand(I'm using slimrom with ondemand governor right now). It's not the most battery friendly governor but i just don't mind it because I really hate seeing lag and stutter on my phone and it's like you said, battery oriented kernels tend to cause stutters and lag. Many users probably don't even care about stutters like me (proof of that is that I see a lot of people saying that oxygen os works perfectly and with good performance lol). Ondemand makes the phone really fast and I don't mind having a bit lower battery life honestly. I wish I knew how to tweak ondemand better though

ISO fs capability would be i nice (yet mostly useless feature). Also honestly i got no idea how hard it is to implement sth like that. [emoji14]
However i'm pretty satisfied by ur swell kernel. Don't really miss anything :highfive:

Smoothness and battery, we all have witnessed in Swell. For me it's outstanding kernel, I don't want to go with any other but then you're willing to work on new kernel, I'd need Swell part two with working USB ETHERNET module. <3

[KERNEL] tb kernels by utkanos (updated for CM7)

Hello.
I have compiled a few kernels for use with any of the sense based roms out right now. There are 3 choices available, feedback is appreciated. Initial reports from users I have sent these to say they improved their battery life, I have been using #1 for 6 days and confirm better life, though ymmv as usual. Support for NFS and all related config options has been removed, tun support is included. For best results use ondemand governor (default).

Thanks for these! (you helped me out the other day on #thunderbolt channel @ andirc.net).
I personally am ready to sacrifice some performance (quadrant) to get longer battery life so I can keep my 4G on longer!
EDIT: After running this kernel overnight and for the past 12 hours, it is amazing on battery life. My battery was around 70% when I flashed the kernel, now 12 hours later and some usage (gmail non-stop, k9 mail polling every 15 minutes), 20+ apps running in background and up front, webcam widget running and updating every 15 minutes, 4G left on, battery is just now at 40%. Phone is still snappy and feels good. Thanks! I look forward to seeing how long I can go on a fully charged battery.
Gonna try these out

These are amazing. They are obviously not for the uber performance crowd who want their 2.0ghz kernel, however, they have greatly improved my battery life.
That said, i can keep 4g on all day and make it 20+ hours with moderate/heavy use.
Just so everyone knows...this guy is legit and will help you out whenever you need it. I've been running his 1st kernel for awhile now on the nonsense rom tesla coil. Because apparently the kernel (drods) that comes with that one makes your device reboot spontaneously at stock cpu speeds.

Drods kernels have been very solid for me with no reboots.

flash #1 earlier today and so far it seems very promising as the most battery efficient kernel yet.
I wanted to post how awesome this kernel has been after a few days now...
Today, after 8 hours of battery use with some internet use, 3G (LTE OFF), and music listening (FM and Local music files)...I still have 30% battery life left!
I used the battery calibration app just to make life easier too!

4g speed
I know "people" claim that their kernel does not effect 4g performance but after 5 consecutive tests on the 'other' one and 5 consecutive tests on the 1228 kernel here, I saw almost 2Mbps faster on this one. Whether it impacts it or not, my eyes do not deceive me. Thanks U.
Just downloaded the first one, running the latest virus rom, will check back in a few to report, thanks for these!
5 slot FL worked for me. Keeping with my 4g belief, the first thing I did was run a speed test. Got 9.93 Mbps. I don't care what others say about their kernels buy I witness theirs to be much slower 4g. The big test will be battery life. I will give feedback tomorrow. Btw I am in Detroit and test went to Chicago.

Semaphore is probably the best all rounder IMO. Good performance, good battery.
Devil might be able to edge out Semaphore in performance but that's if you OC it to 1400 Mhz, and that destroys the battery.
Glitch used to be good but there hasn't been any update since late March, so I really wouldn't count on it being too good compared to the above two.
I always used devil. Most options by far. If you just want a kernel, semaphore is always a good choice.
I've always liked Devil.. it has a boatload of options including supporting a swap partition. Excellent performance and battery life too.
If you want it easy and without big configuration, use Midnight ICS. Very good battery life, simple and suitable performance in every case. Quite stable, best Kernel for me.
Well, usually i wouldn't answer these kind of threads because there isn't absolute answer..but i just had best screen on time with devil ever for me, which was about 5,5 hours in a little over 12 hours of uptime..i think that's pretty good in heavy use..
But still it really depends on day and use..and probably you won't find big differences between all kernels (will at least i haven't)

I vote for Midnight too - very stable and packs useful features (fast-charge, Voodoo sound etc).
Semaphore for me, just a great all rounder.
I'm using SlimICS 4.0 with Vortex Fusion kernel, OC to 1440MHz.
Quite stable, no such thing as self-reboot. Battery can last for almost 2 days with normal usage.
I've always used Semaphore. Devil is also a good choice and I sometimes use that to compare the two.

Seamaphore is the best i think for reguler day to day use, but devil has alittle bit more options.
I presonally use Seamaphore.
My best kernel is devil and semaphore.
Sent from my lovely GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2.
I saw that you originally asked in sema thread which kernel better battery live gives. Devil and Semaphore are the top kernels for our device, they'll both give good battery life. And don't forget that most battery is used by screen, so if you want to save some battery juice, turn the display off!
currently using Devil's kernel
Personally I got lots of reboot and force closes with semaphore, but not one with devil.
Looks like it may be my setup causing the problems with semaphore.
Both have been excellent for battery though.
Sent from my Android shizzle!
Tried semaphore, devil, midnight and glitch. All are good.
If you want to overclock then devil but as you are looking for good battery you probably won't overclock.
In this case I would go with semaphore. I have personally never had a single random reboot on semaphore. And I use this more than the others. In fact almost exclusively these days. Usually try others when flashing addiction needs a fix.
Midnight is also a good option for battery life.

How Is Everybody Dealing With These Heating issues???

I just got my nexus 6p a week ago, finally rooted just installed pure nexus rom and Elemental X kernel, is there a way I could possibly undervolt to keep this phone cool?? Before and after it was rooted it would get hot really fast, anyone one know what app to use I've tried trickster mod, kernel auditor, and synapse. Trickster didn't stick any values... Synapse isn't supported and kernel auditor won't let me undervolt..so close to returning this phone, I've seem to have gotten used to the size.. But this heat is killing me...

Just switch to franco kernel and use the kernel auditor and instead of undervolting just lower the maximum clock speeds of the little and big clusters
Don't bump a post 1 hour after your first post and expect responses. Overheating is not a common issue on this device. Maybe start fresh. EXKM is the best app option. And as other user stated, don't undervolt.

Well maybe i`am lucky but my phone doesn`t get hot unless i`am gaming for a longer time. Maybe check your background apps to see if something unusual is going on an/or apps are over-active.
When you say hot, I think of it as unbearable to hold in the hand. Are you exaggerating or is it really hot? My phone is luke warm and that is because I actually use it. Have you considering downloading batterstats apps or see if you're cell signal is good or bad.

This device doesn't have heat issues and it's definitely not from ElementalX unless you installed it wrong , and pure Nexus is a pretty legit ROM so probably not that either . UV is pointless on these new kernels its not going to obey whatever you set .
Also everyone's sense of heat is different so what's hot to you may be cold to me , you need to post temps of Soc , CPU, and battery . Use an app like DevCheck .

Any phone based on SD810 gets a bit more hot compared to other devices. When I compare my HTC 10 and Nexus 6p, I can tell that 6p gets definitely warmer than the other. But, it's no way 'unbearable'.
I suggest returning it, as you may have a defective device.

[ROOT] [SU.D SCRIPT] Redmi Note 4 MTK Gaming/GPU performance Improvement/Tweak

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM RESPONSIBLE ETC.
As we all know, Our phone has a mediocre GPU and it becomes worse overtime if you play games due to heat throttling. What I have discovered is that the GPU itself does not heat that much, but the CPU heat affects the throttling too hard. Because of that, I tried to change some of the GPU values to improve on the problem and I think I have found one.
What this basically does is it disables DVFS on the GPU. You guys must be wondering "ohh that will screw up GPU from overheating etc". Well like I said, and this is my opinion, I think the heating is mostly from the CPU so our GPU does not heat that much.
Just put this file in the su.d folder in system root "su/su.d" and give it 0744 permision. Reboot after that.
I have perosnally tested this on Asphalt 8 from like 10 minutes and performance has improved a lot.

Nice one thanks. I remember something similar on the galaxy s4, disabling Samsung's dvfs to stop the GPU getting throttled during gameplay. Even if it heats up a good bit there should still be thermal throttling at a kernel level to stop it getting dangerously hot?

Currently using latest weekly of multirom. Previously I was on CN Dev rom. Infact I moved to custom ROM hoping if such condition changes. In the meantime let me flash global and dev ROM and see the result.
I've attached the bug report pops up after force close.

Try the weeklys
