[KERNEL] tb kernels by utkanos (updated for CM7) - Thunderbolt Android Development

Hello.
I have compiled a few kernels for use with any of the sense based roms out right now. There are 3 choices available, feedback is appreciated. Initial reports from users I have sent these to say they improved their battery life, I have been using #1 for 6 days and confirm better life, though ymmv as usual. Support for NFS and all related config options has been removed, tun support is included. For best results use ondemand governor (default).

Been running #1 for a few days with great results. Just switched to #3 and so far so good. Let me get some Quadrant scores up

Thanks for these! (you helped me out the other day on #thunderbolt channel @ andirc.net).
I personally am ready to sacrifice some performance (quadrant) to get longer battery life so I can keep my 4G on longer!
EDIT: After running this kernel overnight and for the past 12 hours, it is amazing on battery life. My battery was around 70% when I flashed the kernel, now 12 hours later and some usage (gmail non-stop, k9 mail polling every 15 minutes), 20+ apps running in background and up front, webcam widget running and updating every 15 minutes, 4G left on, battery is just now at 40%. Phone is still snappy and feels good. Thanks! I look forward to seeing how long I can go on a fully charged battery.

Gonna try these out

These are amazing. They are obviously not for the uber performance crowd who want their 2.0ghz kernel, however, they have greatly improved my battery life.
That said, i can keep 4g on all day and make it 20+ hours with moderate/heavy use.

Just so everyone knows...this guy is legit and will help you out whenever you need it. I've been running his 1st kernel for awhile now on the nonsense rom tesla coil. Because apparently the kernel (drods) that comes with that one makes your device reboot spontaneously at stock cpu speeds.

Drods kernels have been very solid for me with no reboots.

Been using the 5 slot. Very solid battery with this kernel. Thank you.

Wow. This kernel rocks. No speed difference using #1, but I really thought my battery was reporting wrong. It works so well.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

had an issue while downloading trying to download the 5 slot from this site. however, utkanos is very helpful on irc and gave me another link that works!

flash #1 earlier today and so far it seems very promising as the most battery efficient kernel yet.

I wanted to post how awesome this kernel has been after a few days now...
Today, after 8 hours of battery use with some internet use, 3G (LTE OFF), and music listening (FM and Local music files)...I still have 30% battery life left!
I used the battery calibration app just to make life easier too!

Sorry about the dead link, I will update the 5 slot link, in the meantime try this one:

4g speed
I know "people" claim that their kernel does not effect 4g performance but after 5 consecutive tests on the 'other' one and 5 consecutive tests on the 1228 kernel here, I saw almost 2Mbps faster on this one. Whether it impacts it or not, my eyes do not deceive me. Thanks U.

Just downloaded the first one, running the latest virus rom, will check back in a few to report, thanks for these!

5 slot FL worked for me. Keeping with my 4g belief, the first thing I did was run a speed test. Got 9.93 Mbps. I don't care what others say about their kernels buy I witness theirs to be much slower 4g. The big test will be battery life. I will give feedback tomorrow. Btw I am in Detroit and test went to Chicago.

Experiences with MIUI

I thought that I would give MIUI a go since I have read great things about it. I have been using CM for a very long time now, so I wasn't expecting to be blown away.
Overall I am pretty impressed with a few caveats. The interface is very nice and I especially like how the notifications drop out of the bar up top, like when you get a text message. I don't need to use handcent anymore to say the least. The built in theme manager is cool and overall the think the menus are easier to use then most roms.
Anyways, the main issue is speed and battery. I read great things about speed but I just don't see it. The homescreen lags, apps are slow to open, and things always seem to lock up on me. I didn't restore from titanium backup, I started fresh. I'm running Savaged Zen 2.2 as my kernel, but the speed seems sluggish no matter the kernel.
The battery life isn't as great as it was on CM7 either. I can barely.make it through a day on MIUI.
Any tips for improving performance before I leap back to CM?
I would stay with Miui for a couple of days and I guarantee you that the battery life will get better, also I would try using tiamat, or godmode kernel they are great.

How do you change your kernal and which is the best?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Download kernel.
Put into root directory of sd card.
Boot into recovery
Nand backup (because you never know)
Wipe cache and dalvik cache
Flash kernel
Reboot
Evo HW 003
MIUI 1.5.27 with Tiamat 4.0.3 sbc
Cut Corners theme
Miui is awesome but the lag just kills me. I've tried every kernel out there and nothing changed lol.

Just flashed miui last night, wanted to see what it was all about. Took me a lil bit to get everything set up but now it's running smooth for me. Lovin it except battery life is killing me, unplugged it just 15 min ago and it dropped 30 percent. Ill probably run this for a week or two then nand back over to synergy or kingdom. Overall though I love the menus of this rom and all the different settings.
Battery dropped another 8 percent in the time it took me to type this.

Try using setcpu with the tiamat 4.0.5 kernel. Maybe your cpu is constantly pegged at its highest frequency so its killing the battery. With set CPU installed I had my Max at 1113 and min at 384 running smartass; I easily got 24 hours with moderate usage. Also download spareparts from the market and make sure your end button has the phone set to sleep.
Here's the free setcpu for xda users.

I've used many kernals (mostly CM and MIUI) as they tend to have the least amount of clutter.
I've been very happy with MIUI (been on it for over 5 months) when I used to flash a new rom almost daily.
I've found MIUI (more than any other rom) has "finiky" issues with installs.
If you've not done it, I'd recommend doing a complete wipe using Caulkin Format All and Format Temp, fresh install of miui (reboot 3 times after you install it, helps get rid of some fo the chinese crap), flash a kernal of your choice (i've been rocking tiamit 4.0.5 sbc) and then configure your phone and set it all up.
I love the fact that you can have folders on your home screen (that show the icons of the content) however, it doesnt hide your status bar (I think it's stupid to have the clock show twice).
I use launcher pro and folder organizer ( available on market) and love it.
I have a very minimalistic layout with everything grouped neatly.
if you've not used MIUI, try it! Stiff is amazing!

I hear that its very Iphone like and has a lot of things not working in the latest update, is that true been wanting to try it
Tiamat 4.0.4 is the best i have used on MIUI. Savage have never been smooth for me. Overclock to 1152 and it rocks.

Everything seems to work just fine for me with the latest update. I haven't tried Navigation, but my GPS locks almost instantly, so I suppose it would work just fine. It seems like GPS is the biggest problem.
I still have the bug where the automatic brightness doesn't work correctly. I have just set the brightness somewhere and forgot about it. It seems to work correctly for others though. Guess it might have something to do with the kernel though.

Another easy way is to use Kernel Manager from the Market. He has all the most popular kernels listed there. It is a breeze.
try tiamat kernel 3.3.7 which seems to work the best for most people or try the latest one which is 4.0.5. I'm using the latest one with vipermod which is a tool to lower voltages and it's great.

Simple Honey Query

I'm thinking of flashing Simple Honey on Vibrant i haven't done any flash on my own currently I'm on Trigger 3.2 Final but i feel there is too much of battery drain i tried battery calibration even that didn't worked, i see the RAM usage of Simple honey is 340MB and i see the RAM in vibrant around 320MB i know the rest of memory is used by system but does it means Simple Honey is very heavy on battery ?
Also i feel that most of the manuals are not well done i was looking for Simple Honey and it never says clearly that i need to be on CM7 before flashing it or my understanding is not correct
None of the ported gb roms get as good battery life as the froyo roms built from our vibrant source code. If you want better battery life I would try a different kernel with your current rom. I would recommend Bali or DMZ kernels. And no you should not be on cm7 to flash Simply Honey. It is recommended to flash the gingerbread bootloaders first though.

Thanks , so whats the best combo Simple Honey + which kernel ?
Well if you're going to go with Simply Honey it already comes with a kernel with tweaks especially for that rom. But if you want better battery, SH is not the way to go. You're better off sticking with Trigger or another froyo rom with one of the kernels I mentioned above, Bali or DMZ. In my signature are links to the rom and kernel I use, ZenDroid and DMZ kernel. I get phenomenal battery life using that combination.

I'm on trigger 3.2 as well and it's now become pretty glitchy. Looking for a better ROM. I've love to try your combination. Pm me the links please. I rarely, if ever, use my computer for xda so any links are not showing up in your signature.

I just updatd from sh 3.9 to 5.1. There are 2 kernels used bullet 1.2 1.42 and 1.54. The numbers represent oc speeds and 1.54 doesn't work on all phones. The other is talon sh kernel. It's optimized for sh GPS doesn't work (does in bullet). Also talon lets you change bootanimations bullet does not. Instructions are clear in the op. If you are coming from a previous sh ROM use the Odin to stock method. Personally I would flash talon after the step that puts sh 3.8 on your phone. There seem to be issues flashing 5.1 which comes with talon over bullet on your phone. 3.9 bullet, flashed talon, flashed 5.1 all went well. Also you might want to clear caches in cwm (dalvik and any others) before 5.1 flash. Sometimes there are "ghost" which makes the modem flash bad and you can't make or receive calls. All answers are in the thread. Hope this helps. By the way I love this ROM!

I am going to have to respectively disagree with you. We are finally at a place with the latest version of simply honey that we can safely say we are on par if not better than froyo when it comes to battery. I just post a pic today showing over 31 hours with 10% left. Other users in my thread have posted 12 hours with 70% left which is on par to hit 30 hours. I rarely saw 30 hours on froyo. My personal use was admittedly light, a few calls and textx, xda app, Facebook app, a couple times in browser. Moderate shouldn't see less than 18 to 24 hours.

Can you clarify how Simply Honey works on Vibrant since it require 340MB and phone memory is around 320Mb does it means it uses full memory ? The biggest problem which i'm facing is seems like my phone constantly searches for wifi signal even though i have disabled do not search for open wifi networks.

Best Possile Battery Build

Alright guys, ive been hearing different things.. people are getting an upwards of 9 hours of battery from like using texting and that sort of stuff.. stock kernel and rom will give you 5 or 6.. Ive heard some people get 18 hours of use from texting and what not..
Basicly i just want to learn to see what different kernels and set up everyones using and to see how many up hours (like a text or 2 every minute or 2), they get out of it.
Really curious to discover new android things especially battery power with a 4.3 inch screen
Im running Chopsuey kernel with nocturnal shooter sense 3.0 rom and sitting at 768max 245minimum
(yes i made a slight topic typo D=.....)

Kernel : Tiamaat 4.1
undervolted -100mv, 825mv floor
Smartassv2 governor
Battery life: 2 days+
nice to hear you get such good battery life.. i get about 6 or 7 hours of medium usage
I get abysmal battery with every kernel except poonsense for whatever reason. Lasts me all day with texting web phone calls constantly. Seems like setcpu actually makes my battery die quicker

I never believe anyone's claim for 2 days of battery life on a battery of any smartphone.
The most I ever got was at least 8 hours under moderate use with about 40% to spare at the end of the day.
This was achieved using a combination of a froyo rom (myn's twopointtwo) with nets 4.3.4 havs-cfs-more-sbc kernel under-clocked with set cpu and juice defender toggling my mobile data on/off whenever it was needed.
Highest I've personally seen is 18 hours of high use

No mod or anything?
The best way I think to conserve battery is to turn off your 3g data when you're not using it. When I was running CM7 with tiamat 4.1 I could easily get 40 hours of battery life without 3g data on. Idk if you're not wanting to make some software changes, flipping off the 3g could save you a significant amount of battery.
Il pass on that lol. Where I live, connection is 0 to 3 bars and no 4g. My 3g is only like 100kb/s of data speed. It barely works with anything data related unless I have WiFi on. No 3g and my phone is screwed without data
What's the point of having no data on your EVO? The best thing you can do is spend a little bit on an extended battery. I've got the pretty much the same setup as you and I'm at 24 hours right now. I got 2 3500 batteries for just over $20

I would highly recommend Juice Defender Pro if you aren't already using it.It does an excellent job of toggling 3g on and off at specific intervals.

Try a Senseless ROM, aka mine, Jamie's or Graynodes. Sense takes a lot out of the battery life

I can't speak for underclocking, but undervolting makes a huge difference, and so does your governor.. Maybe you weren't setting your **** up right? But yeah my suggestion to get the best battery life is to use an aosp ROM, try tiamat out mason kernel (use smart ass v2 governor with mason), and undervolt...

What's the point of having no data on your EVO? The best thing you can do is spend a little bit on an extended battery. I've got the pretty much the same setup as you and I'm at 24 hours right now. I got 2 3500 batteries for just over $20

you dont need to spend money on an extended battery that is huge and cant fit in your pocket anymore.
if you undervolt correctly this phone should go around 40 hours on battery, which mine does now. you can undervolt safely -75mV on the Evo 4g.
You can also try an app like BetterBattery Stats. You can get it from this XDA Thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
You can also buy it from the Google Play store to donate to the dev.
Either way, it will show you which things are sucking down your battery. If it turns out to be your 3G data in a low signal area there isn't much you can do, but if it turns out to be some app or other service you could disable them to get back some battery life.
Good luck!

Semaphore is probably the best all rounder IMO. Good performance, good battery.
Devil might be able to edge out Semaphore in performance but that's if you OC it to 1400 Mhz, and that destroys the battery.
Glitch used to be good but there hasn't been any update since late March, so I really wouldn't count on it being too good compared to the above two.
I always used devil. Most options by far. If you just want a kernel, semaphore is always a good choice.
I've always liked Devil.. it has a boatload of options including supporting a swap partition. Excellent performance and battery life too.
If you want it easy and without big configuration, use Midnight ICS. Very good battery life, simple and suitable performance in every case. Quite stable, best Kernel for me.
Well, usually i wouldn't answer these kind of threads because there isn't absolute answer..but i just had best screen on time with devil ever for me, which was about 5,5 hours in a little over 12 hours of uptime..i think that's pretty good in heavy use..
But still it really depends on day and use..and probably you won't find big differences between all kernels (will at least i haven't)

Midnight seems to be a nice one for me too

I vote for Midnight too - very stable and packs useful features (fast-charge, Voodoo sound etc).
Semaphore for me, just a great all rounder.
I'm using SlimICS 4.0 with Vortex Fusion kernel, OC to 1440MHz.
Quite stable, no such thing as self-reboot. Battery can last for almost 2 days with normal usage.
I've always used Semaphore. Devil is also a good choice and I sometimes use that to compare the two.

Seamaphore
Seamaphore is the best i think for reguler day to day use, but devil has alittle bit more options.
I presonally use Seamaphore.
My best kernel is devil and semaphore.

I saw that you originally asked in sema thread which kernel better battery live gives. Devil and Semaphore are the top kernels for our device, they'll both give good battery life. And don't forget that most battery is used by screen, so if you want to save some battery juice, turn the display off!
currently using Devil's kernel
Personally I got lots of reboot and force closes with semaphore, but not one with devil.
Looks like it may be my setup causing the problems with semaphore.
Both have been excellent for battery though.

Tried semaphore, devil, midnight and glitch. All are good.
If you want to overclock then devil but as you are looking for good battery you probably won't overclock.
In this case I would go with semaphore. I have personally never had a single random reboot on semaphore. And I use this more than the others. In fact almost exclusively these days. Usually try others when flashing addiction needs a fix.
Midnight is also a good option for battery life.

Actually, glitch is a bit better for OC than devil.

Semaphore
Semaphore is good enough.
