Bootloader unlock only for US version of ZTE Axon 7 - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

It's official
https://community.zteusa.com/community/blogging/blog/2016/08/10/did-somebody-say-bootloader
But it looks like only for US Axon 7, not the EU version:
"the U.S. versions of the Axon Pro and the Axon 7 will have their bootloader unlocked upon request here on Z-Community!"
I try to speak with EU support but they don't answer, also not on Twitter.
After I read how big bugs the Axon 7 got, I will 100% not order one with looked bootloader...

I think those forums are only for the USA version. I also read somewhere that the US version has all the bands that the EU version has except 28 I think, so it might be better to get the US version. Do they also not have EU forums? It seems as though ZTE is focusing only on the US which is a little bit annoying.

Nothing, I try it with mail and Twitter... no forum, no support, even nobody know, when the release date is :/

I try to be optimistic but honestly no international support is just sad, I was waiting for some good news but this just doesn't feel like it.

Release date was 27.07, I'm so happy for now, because I don't get one and it looks like I will not order one. ZTE lools like OnePlus at the first days

mrbigscreen Here is all I know. We have no control over ZTE in the EU. They are a separate division from us. I know that we have contacted them to try to get some information to help EU users out here. They are in control of your builds and updates and when you will receive them. As soon as we hear any information from them it will be posted to this community. I wish I had better news for you.

Looks like every part of the globe have separate divisions,
Hope you guys can get any news soon.

That's ****. Looks like us version will have better support from zte. The European division of zte is really bad. They didn't know about anything....

This is the first time I see something like this. Send a mail to a big company and no answer Even small chinese companys work better/faster than the "EU division" of ZTE. No updates, no support, 450€ and this is it.

My cheap homtom ht3 has an open bootloader and they have the roms on their site....

Getting more and more pissed off that the USA are receiving a lot better support, better stock OS and now an unlocked bootloader!!!
Many users would think that it would be a worldwide unlock but no USA only!! WTF is going on ZTE.

Try it. ZTE Deutschland (Germany) don't know, what support mean. Maybe you guys got luck with UK or Italy (maybe Spain).

I'm happy!!! Thank you ZTE. This phone will be a beast!!!

Well I will be going to USA nexts month, now I have evrn a harder timr should I get a axon 7 a Nexus 6p or a Oneplus3 mmmm. Anyways great news and lets hope it gets better for EU.

If you need a phone immediately and you don't want to save money, the Nexus 6P
If you dont need a phone immediately, wait for the new Nexus and either get that (a statistical marginal improvement over the current Nexus) or get the Nexus 6P which should have a sizeable drop

IIRC, the EU has laws in place that would require ZTE to honor the Passport 2.0 warranty even if they provided a bootloader unlock. The US has no such laws in place; this means that ZTE can get out of supporting unlocked phones in the US, but not in the EU. If they hold firm on the warranty going away upon unlock, the EU will likely never receive a bootloader unlock.

[Update:FALSE] It's said that MS2 will be upgrade to Android 2.3 on 16th, May

The farce is over, original post's author was blocked in that forum.
Sorry for bring such rumor here and spamming you in last few weeks, so sorry. I'm working on collecting and reporting argen2stone 1.9's feedbacks on Chinese forum for making a better next release.

I just see this post at a Chinese android phone forum:

I also saw this news before
The manager of moto of asia pacific region (hong kong, tai wan etc) said there will NOT be 2.3 update of milestone2.
However, moto in China have a different manager, and their ROM build is different from us(hong kong), so it still could be true that a 2.3 might release in China. If it is real, are our great developers able to use that 2.3 kernal to build their ROM?

im not sure how true that post is, but if it is true, it is good news then i suppose like for all motorola android phone owners, its a waiting game more than anything else.
just on a seperate note, i looked through the official motorola software upgrade website, and there has been nothing stated for an upcoming update on the milestone 2 (no matter which region). i have been checking this website regularly and nothing so far

I doubt the message refers to me722 (retail model in china), since this message appeared in a domestic forum in china. ME722 has its own version of android os, specially customized to adjust local market. However, that version is a little different from other versions. Touch screen is less sensitive and some apps installed requested by carriers. Although me722 can use firmware from other parts of the world, language may course problem.
I have read the original post. The new came from a person who claimed to have some inside information from a motorola employee. I doubt he referred to an employee in china branch.
So, it's hard to say whether there would be an update for global users.
Personally, I hope my concerns are all mistaken, since I'm also expecting an update from motorola. I'm currently running UK firmware, quite satisfied.

yet again as i stated, there is no announcement of any update on the official motorola software upgrade website. if what this person with insider information says is true, what i feel is on May 16th, Motorola would officially announce a scheduled date for an update release. i highly doubt that they would push for an update without announcing the launch of the update first

Your opinion is quite reasonable, but consider the Droid X's OTA upgrade to Android 2.3.3, it's still possible that MS2 will got a update without official announcements .
However, the original post's credibility is still worth discussing.

I'm using UK firmware too, ME722's ROM is quite terrible : Less sensitive of touch screen, No google service (even the Android Market and Gmail), Lots of rubbish, Different baseband ...
After all it still a good news isn't it? Because Milestone 2's hardwares of different retail version are exactly the same ( except the baseband which can be switched easily ), moto dev teams in other region can release updates very soon. And, we can also modify Chinese ROM just like agent2stone.
But I still don't know whether original post is true.

im afraid i didnt know that the droid X was upgraded to gingerbread. however, i did note 2 articles claiming rather contrasting pieces of news:
1. apparently the droid PRO is getting a software update. however its not to 2.3.x as most people anticipated. instead its a bugfix for the current 2.2 its on. so most likely it'll be some version of 2.2.x
REF: http://technewsperk.com/featured/motorola-droid-pro-software-update-available-now/
2. on the other hand, apparently Atrix customers are getting emails to beta test a software upgrade for their phone. however, apparently one customer got not one but 2 updates. im not too sure about the details of these updates as yet
REF: http://phandroid.com/2011/04/20/mot...atrix-4g-owners-to-test-new-software-upgrade/
considering the milestone 2 is no where near as popular as the flagship Atrix or droid X, i think that these flagships would be rewarded with some form of 2.3.x first before other Droids receive the gingerbread update. in the mean time, unfortunately im forced to think that the A953, and all global derivatives of it would be forced into the same fate as the Droid Pro for the time being- that is receiving a bug fix update (2.2.x) before the release of a 2.3.x can be made possible
EDIT- UPDATE:
i happened to notice these articles around, apparently announcing some form of a droid 2 update featuring gingerbread (2.3.x). Do check it out:

3. http://phandroid.com/2011/03/29/the...eaked-gingerbread-for-motorola-droid-x-and-2/
hope somebody could shed some light on the authenticity of these articles...cheers

I'm more interested about Motorola right now, lets see what they planed, boost the sells of Atrix by saying "we will unlock our devices"?.. but thats offtopic lol.. to the topic.. well china .. i dont think that their 2.3 would be a big use for us.. but maybe the kernel? .. wouldnt we get the Kernel to work on our phones since its signed and throw a EU/US 2.3 on it? .. i mean it would be a Kernel.. wich works for And2.3.. so idk if that would be any help ..

it is quite highly unlikely though that they release an update for China and leave the other countries out. This phone is rather popular in Malaysia, Singapore, India, USA and Brazil from what i know. Perhaps a global update of some sort is in the pipeline...its just that the news of an update in China was leaked?

How about updating your european devices as well, or is it just a fact what i'm assuming, that being that Honor doesn't give jack-**** about Europe?
I don't think you can fault Honor for trying to fight there way into the western market. There competing against big-boy established companys.
Anyways the updates aren't much of anything, if they don't update to marshmallow with all the other varients, I could see being disappointed

Seeing the way they're handling updates so far for this device, I have my doubts if Europe or anyone else is going to get Marshmallow any time soon... Also I don't care who they have to fight against, if you can't keep up, don't step up, it's that simple.

I don't know the numbers...... But did they sell 1 phone in Europe and 10 million in the US? I know that sounds extreme, but makes good business sense to support the majority.
We don't know what the software team at honor is anyway, could be one person handling variants and a whole team handling the states.
The phone has only been released for a short time and we know they are working on updates, so they haven't ditched the development.
Just saying be patient because you haven't had a update "NOW"
We have a working CM ROM anyways, why would you want to use stock?

Other than bands and languages, isn't software the same? ROMs for L24 with B140, work on L21 and L22. However, the US version only comes with 2GB RAM, whereas other variants come with 3GB from what I've heard.

I have no received any update yet to 151. Wonder whats taking so long.
The updates are merely security updates. They are being pushed by regions. There is little to no change in the UI between 140 and 151, but there is some more bloat. Additional apps like Kindle and Amazon, which you may or may not want.

[Europe] Bootloader Discussion

So i receive many questions about this via PM and other topics as i have a good contact with ZTE so i thought I'd create one where you guys can post your comments.
Ive raised this topic to them and they are discussing it. I will keep this main post updated with what i hear.
Update 05/01/17
Official Bootloader Unlock is coming. It was delayed through there not being a great process to release it and the various updates the ZTE have provided to fix bugs. I am still on a root version of b03 and there is a stock b09 version currently. However, the root version i was given is great and works flawlessly. Ive been promised that another root release is coming very soon and will become official.
Potential EU Bootloader Unlock - Needs testers! Thanks @DrakenFX:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165
Why did USA get a bootloader unlock?
> The phone has been released to the open market there and under USA law they can remove the warranty if a bootloader is requested. From what i have read/understand in EU they have to commit to their warranty no matter what.
> It was all decided hastily internally within the USA team without contacting the worldwide team, neither had a clue of what each other was doing, but due to my efforts it looks like they are communicating.
> ZTE promise they dont want to discriminate.
What is happening with the EU?
It is coming. You wont lose warranty.
i got my Axon 7 today in germany from Saturn and in the dev menu i had the option for OEM Bootloader unlock, i thought european weren't supposed to have that?

Even doesn't do anything on his own when enable, is needed when official bootloader unlock arrive.
thought a fastboot oem unlock would suffice, but didn't try it yet.
But that they kept that option there is just pure torture
What ZTE should realize regarding the bootloader unlock is that they have 2 options to build trust with the customers, especially considering last year's Axon has not received Marshmallow and will not receive Marshmallow (at some point customer service said it would, which makes the whole thing even worse).
Either let people unlock the bootloader and provide long term software support through the dev community or promise updates for at least 2 years. Buying what is essentially a flagship device (and *the* flagship of ZTE) and then possibly not receiving anything beyond Nougat (which I expect them to deliver at the very least because of Daydream) would be a huge letdown. I can accept that with <200€ phones, whose hardware probably doesn't really hold up anyways after 2 years, but I expect more from a 400€ phone that is the top of the line from that brand. This holds true especially considering that the other two big competitors in the same price range (the OP3 and the Honor 8) do provide at least one of those assurances. So far, the Axon 7 does not and that's worrisome given both some of the flaws in the current software (notification bell, video playback issues etc) and their own history with last year's Axon.
Bad news but it is starting to look unlikely in Europe that we will get a bootloader unlock. They will try to give us an official confirmation via social media soon.

that's realy sad, will have to start looking for another phone and send the axon7 back
Thats a deal breaker..
Can't we get any solutions for the europe phones from the A2017U unlock? Are they so different?
Really bad news. I hope they will re-think this decision

recieved mine today and right after unpacking i saw this thread with the bad news.
if there's no new info about the bootloader untill the end of next week it's gonna get returned.
not gonna gamble on someone maaayyybe finding an exploit in a year...
Oh well, they better rethink this or OP3 it is. Been on the edge the whole time. But wanted to give it a go due to the cool hardware. I can still cancel that order on the Axon and will probably do that as soon as this get official.
Please help me.
We have the US version with the 20B update from which you can unlock your boot loader with the 20B_boot update.
One guy has flashed the b02 version for the Europe devices on his A2017U US phone. Correct?
Can't we flash the 20B version to our Europe A2017G phones and unlock them with the 20b_boot version?
Can't we check which files and how the boot update changed the boot loader and do it some way manually on our phones?

Not really -- the OTAs are block level patches, not file patches. Someone would have to dump and compare the partitions before and after. The system image would probably be easy, fastboot is provided as a full image, but for the other images (boot and recovery), you'd have to dive into the assembly and/or tear apart the kernel.
I'm actually kinda glad they decided to **** europe over with the bootloader. I was on the fence whether to buy the P8 Plus or wait for the Axon 7.
Now I don't have to worry about this anymore, ZTE made the decision so much easier
The P8 has the better battery and camera anyhow. Cheers to everybody

Thats your choice.
The Axon 7 has better screen and sound anyhow which matters to me. Pretty solid phone for the price even without an unlocked bootloader. Theres already root so cant really complain, what do you expect for a £360 phone!
They didnt really **** europe with the bootloader, it was never guaranteed or announced. But glad your decision is made easier.
The 3 year warranty with the axon 7 was too good to pass on

All valid points. But no unlocked bootloader = no custom roms = no buy, simple as that.
Especially with a company with a bad or at very least doubtful reputation to provide software updates for a reasonably long/adequate period.
But as you say, that's my choice. And from what I can tell many others will make the same choice. Owning an Android is all about freedom of choice and customization, especially for people her on XDA (obviously). I do like the phone but I don't necessarily like the software on it, or at least not all of it.
I would go for the One+ 3, but no SD card slot = no buy.
I have owned enough android phones to know what I consider essential features and I buy my phones accordingly.
And I actually consider a 1440p screen on a phone a slight negative due to increased power consumption while I gain nothing with higher pixel density (not interested in using mobile VR).
Sound is better, true, but I listen exclusively with headphones so nice speakers are a bonus. My Bluetooth speaker still has better sound

I think 1080p is an absolutely fine resolution for 5.5", but 1080p PenTile? Eh. Not quite hitting the mark for me.

B371 and B380 updates for middle east

Is it just me Huawei is ignoring or is it the whole middle Eastern region?
Why are they taking so long to push these updates?
Any way to contact Huawei team specifically for this problem.
Don't wanna mail customer service as they will just say what they always say.
"We are working on it, you will get this update in the near future".
Maybe you can try this method to debrand your phone and update from Europe...

Thanks. I know about rebranding but my question is still the same
Honor 5X forum has a similar discussion. Why is middle Eastern customers treated as the least favored by Huawei?
Either they should push the updates together for EU and ME or at most should have a delay of a month or so?
I just want to get this to Huawei that customers are talking about it and they should try to make their service a bit better for all.

Well, China already had its mobile boom, now India is an emerging market for cellphone sales...
Even if we say, ME customers have less market share, that is gonna change in 4,5 years max. A brand is all about brand loyalty.
If existing customers are not satisfied, how can we suggest new customers to adopt the brand.
As an example, if someone asks me of buying honor, for sure I will tell them update delays and compare it to other brands which are not biased.

It's common for late upgrade from brand to brand. SONY and Samsung have been alwasy late for new upgrades across regions too, not even mention HTC who barely upgrade...

I never faced these problems as i always used China specific Roms before... Honor 7 is my first device which is not a Chinese model.
As for Samsung and Sony, which region do you think is updated the last? Or is it random?
Also if EU update was pushed later than ME, don't you think, a lot of users would have raised the same question?
Problem is, ME customers, imo, are not so interested in what's happening with updates and why?
EU customers, on the other hand, delve more into the details and in hows and whys?
Its been a day since this post and not a single ME honor 7 customer has come along to voice his/her opinion...

I think it's still a new thing for Chinese companies to release upgrades for international market, so still some issues inbetween.
Why bother? Just debrand and at the end of the day you have the most updated H7 it can be.
Problem solved. And it´s better than going around trying to find answers only Huawei knows and doesnt tell.

Well said, actually I have too much time on my hands these days. Spend it surfing XDA all day long and when can not find anything to do, try to find new ways to keep myself busy:laugh:
If you want to see if ME people cares for new updates or not, check HonorArabia twitter account, most of the twits are about the updates.
We can choose any other brand since all of the brands are available in the markets, it's huawei's loss.

Well, honor 7 already has MM for middle east but the EU already got B371 and B380 with bug fixes and improvements while ME customers are still waiting.
The actual question is, why are we treated as the least favored?

Think in this way. You are atleast favoured..
My variant has no updates. Still remaining as it is when I get it. They said not to expect updates too.
Cos there are only 2 to 3 persons expecting update for this variant. Preference will be given based on the expectations raised by that particular model users.
Devs are working on the priority of the regions. Everyone wont get the update at the same time. It takes time to develop for a particular region, add language support to it, satisfy the carriers, satisfy and accompany the sponsors, compatibility to sponsor apps., Etc.
The above mentioned factors takes more time for Middle East and even Malaysian variant.
We can't blame a single entity for getting late update.

The Honor brand is disappointing..

I'm quoting a user who contacted Honor UK asking about the EMUI 5.1 update
johnhux7 said:
I have been taking to Honor UK on hangouts.
Honor has no plans to release EMUI 5.1 at the MO.
They also said about the promice of updates :
"The "promise" was a Honor US thing. No European countries were part of that."
They also said :
"The Honor 8 is due to get an update soon. As to what's in that again no info."
These are exact copies of what they said.
Will post more when they say more
John
More quotes
"We are committed to updates, we just don't want to be caught out by publishing press releases with timescales in."
"The whole deal with XDA again was a US, neither Honor US or XDA consulted us before announcing the relationship."

I hope that this thread will be noticed by the Huawei/Honor community managers, and that they'll take full responsibility for all the false claims and misleading motto about supporting the Dev community (that includes releasing proper source code) + 2 years updates + XDA partnership.
We need an explanation.
A note to the forum moderators: Please do not remove this thread or censor it as it's our sole way to be noticed by Honor team.
It would be great to have some reply from @Honor UK (Verified), @HonorUSA or @Rox_Honor, but I don't think we will be that lucky...

Yepp, disappointing. My last Honor personally, will move to another brand.
I'm a big fan of the Honor/Huawei camera, its the best out of all brands I've used including Apple, but they need to improve the updates and release the kernel source. For a moment I was close to selling the Honor 8 and getting a OnePlus for a better software experience, but I managed to go jump through hoops to manually update the phone.
I paid $280 for my Honor 8. I have been nothing but happy with it. If you don't like it, move on to something else honestly.

If you got your phone for a good price and you're happy with it, it's good for you. This thread exposes some facts and its aim is to get a "minimal" support from Huawei. So, maybe we'll move to something else 'honestly' in a near future. But many users can't afford it
Don't get it. People are calling some underpaid support guy on the customer level, mostly not really tech avid guys and quite uninformed and than believe what they're saying? Honestly?
There is only one department for outside communication. And you never talk to them. Relax and don't believe what so [email protected] guy is saying you, as they often get informations even later than the customers.

Lol it's the same even with supposed top brands like Samsung your calling a call center usually from another country that has only been trained to tell you how factory reset your phone from settings or from a button combo. If that doesn't solve it you are usually directed to send your phone back for warranty if it is under warranty or pay to fix your phone. So it's not just honor brand.
Yeah, I like the hardware especially at the price but software support is too poor for me to ever consider Honor again. Too many bugs and too few fixes.
It's the same on every single brand. My last was LG V10. A very pricy device. But no updates, not even security updates in time. I was expecting this for a 650€ device. On the H8 I got Nougat right after I booted it. And it was only 360€. Quite good. I'm disappointed by the closed source policy though. They promised more and that's why i didn't get the bq devices with some kind of Cyanogen on it. Still not sure if it was a wise decision.

I want Security updates once a month.

That's...crap, honestly.
I'm not asking for shiny new features and the latest version of Android. Those would be great, but EMUI 5.1's not horribly out of date. Security fixes so my data's not stolen or device ****ed up are kind of important.
