No video after Google boot screen, but audio works (latest Marshmallow) - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am no longer getting video as of today on my Nexus Player, on my Panasonic TV. Audio works fine still, and the Google logo shows up, so HDMI isn't dead.
Just finished doing a format and flash to the latest Marshmallow version out for Fugu, and the issue persists.
Any idea what's going on with this thing?
Thanks!

Solved! Had to do a hardware reset of my Yamaha AV Receiver - seems to be a known rare issue with my model.
Instructions how to do this on the Yamaha RX-V377: http://faq.yamaha.com/us/en/article/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/rx/rx-v377_black_u/10790/8325

Crazy. I run full android M on nexus and it worked fine on my Samsung TV. But I took it to work and the sharp TV in the break room would say "received unsupported video output" and go blank after the google logo. My Panasonic TV will display but everything gets very distorted and artifacted. I also have a Yamaha receiver however I am using an HDMI port directly into the TV. I also noticed the Samsung TV in the office at work. Had mo issues either..

[Q] Only getting 480p when connected to Optoma GT720 HD projector

I could use some help.
I tried resetting back to factory settings. I originally had it connected through my yamaha receiver. I thought that was the problem but then I connected it directly to the projector. Still the same result. stuck at 480p. I've tried it on my 720p plasma and it works fine. There are no video output settings I can change apart from optimize for resolution or framerate in developers options.
Tried switching HDMI cables also.
There is no options on the projector to force resolution, since it auto detects resolution.
After more troubleshooting, seems this is an HDCP/EDID issue with the nexus player and projector combination.
Google Play Movies will only play a blank screen with sound.
Tried switching to a 1080p monitor with a movie playing and it shows up fine on the monitor. Auto switches to the correct resolution and keeps on playing while hot swapping the cables.
I tried chromecast on the projector and it works fine at 720p resolution.
At this point dont know what else I can do.
I've had problems with my Acer H5360 projector, which apparently displays the wrong black levels. It's also had EDID problems before (the chip was not read-only, and got corrupted) and different devices handled the default fallback differently. Is it possible your EDID is corrupted?
I dont belive the projectors edid is corrupted because my receiver lists all the capable resolutions it supports. Chromecast works fine, ps3 auto detects all the resolutions including 3d. Only having the issue with the nexus player. It defaults to 720*480 60hz. I coonected the nexus player to my monitor and it automatically showed 1080p. Flashed the latest update that was released. Still no luck when i reconnected it.
If you take a look at the other thread, the EDID for that guy's system showed that it supported 1080p, but the first timing it declared happened to be a lower resolution, and the Nexus Player just picked that one and went with it, not checking for a higher supported resolution.
That should be something they can fix with a software update, so hopefully they're aware of it and maybe we'll get an update sooner than later.
Got the same problem, same projector, my workaround was to use my old google tv (sony nsz-gs7) and use it as a bypass so my projector would detect it's a 720p projector -_- until they find a workaround....
Did anyone find a solution for this problem? Having the same issue on my Optoma.
Thnx

[Q] Nexus Player - No Picture with LG LB6300

So I got a Nexus Player the other day, but when I plugged it in, I get a blank screen although occasionally I'll see a flash of an image from the device for less than a second.
TV knows that there's a signal, it displays a PCM, 16:9 and 1080p logos when player is powered up, or No Signal when it's powered down
Player works fine when I plugged it into a monitor that I had in another room, and I've tried 3 different HDMI cables (primary cable being an Amazon High Speed HDMI). When I had it installed on the monitor I downloaded the 5.0 upgrade, but that didn't help.
Updated TV software too, no joy.
Called Google, they said call LG. Called LG, they said it's not them.
Google talked about escalating to someone higher than the help desk, but I suspect that's stalled at least until next week. They're also offering to replace the player now too, but I'm not hopeful and increasingly convinced that there's something basically incompatible between this TV (LG 65LB6300) and the Nexus Player. If I had to describe it, it looks like when you'd set your monitor to an invalid resolution / refersh rate back in the CRT days... you might get an image for a second, but then the screen goes blank.
Any thoughts on other options that I might try or should I abandon hope and ask for a refund?
Could be a wonky hdmi cable or connection. If you have other devices via hdmi and they're working, try swapping one of those known good cables and see if it fixes it.

I've tried 3 different cables and swapping with my blueray player (blue worked fine on both ports with any of the 3 cables.
Google's troubleshooting steps include:
Step 5: Try the Nexus Player on a different TV.
If the Nexus Player works with another TV, there may be a compatibility issue between the Nexus Player and the original TV. Contact the manufacturer for additional guidance.
Feels like I've got that compatibility issues and neither party knows what's up.
I'm having the same issue with my LG 55EC9300. The Nexus Player won't display anything on the TV screen (which just remains black). I've tried all the troubleshooting steps available on the Google support pages, including factory resetting the Nexus Player, and nothing has worked.
The TV does seem to recognize that a Nexus Player is attached because it says "Nexus Player" in the TV's input menu when it's connected via HDMI.
Please let me know what you hear.
I just ordered a NP, I got a LG 50LB5900 will test it out when it arrives, luckily I have two options a smart bluray with HDMI in, I hope this doesn't span all new LG units. This needs to get escalated properly and hopefully google will contact LG if it is their issue. I'd call google and escalate it and use this thread as a reference.
defconoi, I'll be anxious to hear your results. I tried pass-thru on my samsung stereo/dvd player. It picked up the audio just fine but the video still had the same problem. If I understand correctly, your LB5900 isn't SmartTV/WebOS, so hopefully you'll be unaffected.
Still doing email dialog with Google, if they can't offer something solid this week I may be asking for a refund on this thing.
I have same issue on an LB6300.
I've tried the Nexus player on a couple other TVs in the house and can confirm it works fine on them, but only a blank screen on the LB6300. I've tried the same troubleshooting steps, but no luck. Very disappointing, this was the TV I wanted to run the Nexus on.
I have that same problem on 42LB671V
black screen on 3 different hdmi cable
on the old tv Mirai it works ok.

My Samsung smart Blu-ray player has a HDMI input that the nexus player works with, it also supports more audio codecs than my LG TV, for now I got it connected via that until my optical cables come in. As a fix for this issue you guys could probably use a HDMI converter box or adapter, im not quite sure which one would work, but I'd do some googling. The Nexus player is awesome, if it didnt work on my TV i'd find a cheap solution.

I'm trying to think thru options here... what I'm looking for is to a device that can intercept the HDMI signal, decode it, and then re-encode it to HDMI again (HDMI is the only vialable input option on my TV)... Maybe 2 boxes, [hdmi -> composite] -> [composite -> hdmi]
Maybe I just need to figure out a way to access the composite input on my tv - it's obstructed by the mounting brackets.
Sympathies to you xgrey, but I'm glad to hear that more than one model is affected...
My 55LG just arrived today; out of the box my nexus player worked with it fine. I noticed at times i was getting some audio desyncing caused by the tv of all things but turning the tv off and on fixed it. Well I applied 2 updates and now I'm getting the same issue. This has to be sdome sort of LG or webos trying to block google. My chromecast is still showing up fine.

Nexus player wont play on lg web os 70lb6560-ta
I have the same problem with my LG 70LB6560-TA. The Nexus Player plays on all other (3) TV's I have except the 70LB6560-TA(WEB OS). This has exactly the same problem that toturi writes where the screen flashes on for a second then goes off for a minute. I have tried several new cables and all the HDMI ports on the TV with no success. I have called LG but I get all the usual noob "Please check" questions.
Partial Success
Last Friday I picked up an HDMI->Composite adapter, I'm calling this a partial solution.
Good news it that it works, bad news is that I'm only getting 720p now rather than 1080. This is fine for things like Castle of Illusion, but I'm not sure I'm that excited for movies. (I've got to make the call this week on returning the whole thing and I'm really on the fence).
Also, WTF was LG thinking with the placement of the Power, Digital Audio, Ethernet, and Composite ports all positioned perpendicular to the screen and INSIDE THE FREAKING VESA MOUNTS??!?... Hacking thru the steel VESA mount to get at my Composite port wasn't real cool.
If anyone happens to see this thread before you've taken the plunge, I'd say skip the LG. Not sure if Samsung or Sony are better, but LG seems to be doing a lot a bone-headed things lately ...that reminds me that I need to write a rant about my LG refrigerator too.
Anyway, using the composite solution is one route that you may consider, but not a perfect solution. Hopefully Google can still out-smart whatever it is that LG did to break HDMI (can we get them de-certified for the right to label their TVs HDMI over this?!)

I'm trying to build a list, can you share your model number? Here's what I've captured so far:
70LB6560-TA
55LB7200
55lb6300
42LB671V
55EC9300
65LB6300
There's likely a common thread here of WebOS-TVs or if it wasn't deliberate, then a chipset that's just bad (and who knows what other devices might be impacted!)

[Q] Netflix - no picture, but sound (hdcp?)?

Hi,
I have an appleTV and an Amazon Fire Stick, and the Nexus Player. All 3 are routed through my Yamaha RX-v3900 amp and then to the TV.
The AppleTV and the Amazon Fire stick both display netflix without issue. The Nexus displays all menus, but when you start playing content, the screen goes blank and you only get audio.
If I connect the Nexus directly to the TV, it plays fine.
I suspect this is an hdcp issue. I've called Google's support line. They suggested unplugging the Nexus, unplugging the amp, unplugging the TV. None of these steps worked. Although, unplugging the nexus caused Netflix not to be able to connect to it's servers, and the app had to be uninstalled and re-installed to get back the menu level.
Anybody else seeing this? Any thoughts on how to proceed?
Thanks,
Jim

Not that this is all that practical but maybe swap out the amp for an hdcp compliant one? (I think that is a thing since it's passing through hdcp signals)
the netflix app for the player has HORRID HDCP compliance.. i returned mine because of this.. the app is just screwed if you dont have a very simplistic setup.. anything at all between the tv and the player will cause it to not function correctly.
HDCP

This amp is HDCP compliant. There is a bug in the Way nexus player handles HDCP with certain amps.
Yeah, the Amazon firestick and AppleTV both play through the Yamaha 3900 without HDCP issues, so the problem is with the Nexus player, or at least the Netflix implementation on the Nexus player. I'm also back to having resolution issues. Compared to both the fireTV and the AppleTV, the Nexus Player looks like crap.
I have no problem using the NP with my pioneer amp... Have you tried different inputs on the amp or different cables?

I've had the exact same issue, it's the length of the HDMI cables. I use a 5 to 1 switch. Once I removed the Nexus Player and plugged it directly into the TV (3ft HDMI cable), it worked perfectly. My Logitech Revue had no issues, my raspberry pi and Chromecast also don't have any challenges. Seems the opamps for the NP might be a little weak (speculating).
d
Same exact issue here.
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V675
-Firmware 1.6 (up to date)
Netflix plays audio but no picture, youtube plays but is choppy.
TV shows resolution as 576p.
Alternate thread describing issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/help/low-resolution-receiver-t2940767
None of these issues are apparent when the player is connected directly to the tv.
Unfortunately this isn't a very good work around for me as my tv's digital audio out doesn't seems to perform well with my receiver. (cheap tv, seiki)
The issue seems isolated to the Nexus player as Chromecast and roku work perfectly through receiver. (Guess i won't be replacing them both with this device as soon as i hoped)
Sounds like hdcp, hopefully google pushes an update or a patch is discovered soon.

Excellent summary, BUT we can also add Google Movies & TV to the list. I get the exact same symptoms using a hdmi switch as I do with Netflix. Again, only direct connect works, all other devices (Chromecast, Raspberry Pi, Google TV, PS3) I run work just fine (even with Netflix & G Movie&TV.
Happy New Year!!

I assume you all are still experiencing this issue? I just purchased a NP and have the same issues with both Netflix and Google Play Movies. However, YouTube and Hulu play just fine. I have short high speed HDMI cables (very good quality ones) . I use a Denon 2000 receiver. Chromecast and ATV works well. I can't connect directly to the TV as a work around (that's another story)

I figured out my issue. It was my directv box causing the issue. For some reason, it triggered the hdcp security on it for copy protected channels like hbo and showtime. It wouldn't let me play anything on those channels. The directv box was connected to the same receiver as the Nexus player. So, I reset the directv box and I was able to see my hbo and showtime TV again. When I tried to view videos on the NP via Google Play Movies and Netflix, it was working fine again ☺

That didn't work for me either. I had to actually hit the reset button on the directv box (the red reset button). Try that

Ok - did the reset button on the Directv, replaced all cables with shorter cables. Nada.
I finally routed the Nexus Player directly to the TV (works), then put a toslink opitcal out from the TV to the amp. Seems to be working, but it makes setting up to watch Android TV a PITA.
I wish they would fix the Nexus Player, but this is a decent work around.
Working now!
Looks like a recent update fixed this for me! Decided to try it today after noticing there was a new plex (not plex pass) app and realized that I hadn't tried through my receiver in a while. Connected it back up to my yamaha receiver and to my surprise, everything is working great! Netflix, google movies and the plex app connected through my receiver, audio AND video coming through as expected. Even the GUI Menu is showing the proper 1080p resolution.
Looks like I may finally be able to replace my roku/chromecast with the nexus.
Your mileage may vary but check your nexus to make sure it's up to date and give it another go!
Note: I am fairly confident an update was the fix as it was the only change to my setup. Simply plugged it in with the same cables/connections as my previous testing.
Good to hear! I was hoping for more stability with Netflix on the NP before I pull the trigger.
How about Dolby Digital/5.1 surround from Netflix? I read previously it only outputs in 2.0 stereo.
Thanks!

Nexus Player no sound coming from TV

Using my Nexus Player on my Vizo 4K smart TV and not getting any sound from anything played by the NP. Google support wasn't any help and I ended up RMAing the NP just in case it was a faulty device. Got the new one and having same issues so it's something with my NP/TV combo.
Also did do all the normal troubleshooting steps (differnt HDMI ports, different cables, verified that my cable/port worked by plugging in a console, factory reset). No external speakers so just tv speakers. only thing i didnt try was another TV.
Anyone have issues like this? Anyone running off a 4k and/or smart tv no problem? What are some other options?

Something with vizio tvs then.. im wondering if theres some sound redirection that isnt automatic with the player. i know my friend had a surround sound issue with his tv until he did some setting on his tv and it worked. wondering if its the same thing. ive messed with it all but never had any luck. any other debugging steps we can do ? i flashed my player with the lollirock rom but havent dived into it more than that yet.
Contacted support and was told "that's weird" and now I'm just completely ate up with this thing. My apple TV works and the chromecast works on my vizio. I bought this expecting the same level of quality and it was just a huge let down
Finally got a follow up from tech support.
Thank you for contacting Google!
I got the word from the higher level of support regarding your issue. It seems that there's a compatibility issue with your smart TV and the Nexus player. They're working hard to help and improve the Nexus Player and in the*mean time*please use your Nexus Player with your working HDTV.
Thank you for contacting Google!

The Google Support Team
.....so needless to say, it must not be compatible with Vizio smart tvs
Infrequently my NP loses sound (Sony tv) and it is fixed by flipping to a different input and then back to the NP.
Likely a different issue, but worth a shot!
I wish! I ended up taking mine back to the store. I was so excited for this product too. Just a bummer

[Q] Receiving TV channels (via DVB-C) not working when nexus player is connected

It blocks the receiving of normal TV channels (via DVB-C), my Samsung TV is saying there is no signal coming in. As soon as I disconnect the player (remove HDMI or remove power from Nexus Player) my TV is instantly back to normal. As soon as i make the Nexus Player work again (with normal TV selected as a source) the error is comming back. I can repeat this as many times I want, the picture comes and disapears.
Android TV on Nexus Player is up to date, the software on the Samsung TV (UE40H6470) as well. I tested it on all the hdmi sockets on the TV.
With other HDMI Devices I connect to the TV this problem never appeared.
Any ideas how this could be solved? What could be the reason?

1. I'm thinking a bad hdmi cable, so swap it if you can.
2. Hook the Nexus Player to another TV and see what happens.
3. Maybe a goofy setting in the TV, do a factory reset on the TV and see if that helps.
