Is it at all possible to install twrp on a nexus and the flash a rom without rooti? As long as I have twrp? I know that it is possible with the kindle fire. Thank you alot

No you do not need root. Rooting and unlocking the boot loader are two different things. You can flash a ROM if your boot loader is unlocked, and you have a custom recovery. But keep in mind, MOST ROMs come prepared rooted so you will gain root from flashing a rom

Even if you maintained root through the upgrade without being unlocked there is no way to revert back to previous versions, it will brick your device if you try.

you'll receive updates but to install it you'll have to unroot and flash stock recovery. and then root again if you want.

No. You need to unlock your bootloader (good advice: keep it unlocked) and install TWRP.
