So I have been looking for a way to root my kindle, get the normal android layout and functionality, but be able to switch back to my kindle mode without going through a long process. What should I do to be able to switch between the normal android mode to the kindle mode and vice versa?
What you want to do is Root, install FireFireFire and TWRP recovery. Then install Android Market. You can then install Go Launcher EX and Voodoo OTARootkeeper. You can then switch between the Kindle Fire Launcher and Go Launcher EX(Basic Android style Launcher) and use OTARootkeeper to easily switch temporarily between Root and unRoot to use all of Amazon's services.
This thread seems to be working well to help people from Root through getting the Android Market:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417234
After that you can look around if you need any help with Go Launcher and OTARootkeeper.
Good Luck!
I confirm with the thread recommended. I did the root video and installing the Android Market to work perfectly. Haven't gone beyond that yet as I personally don't need to.
You don't actually have to root your Kindle to do this. Just download and install GoLauncher EX (You will have to sideload it - I downloaded it to my HTC Inspire, backed it up, synced with my Dell Inspiron, then sideloaded it to the Kindle). Then add a shortcut to the "Launcher" app already on the Kindle so that you can access the Carousel and the other Amazon apps (such as the Bookshelf). Changing the Home option to GoLauncher EX will allow you to switch back and forth between the two launchers. I've been doing this for a couple of weeks with no problem, and can STILL access the original Kindle layout. Alternately, you can add the Kindle Android app as a application on GoLauncher's desktop and it will open the book you are reading with the exact same functionality.
Also, I recommend installing the Dolphin browser to replace Silk. With Dolphin, you can easily access the Android Market without having to root.
I was able to test and confirm that the latest Google Launcher from Nexus 5 works on the Kindle Fire with the latest Search app. It does need the latest Play Services as well. Unfortunately the wallpaper is black and attempting to change causes to close. But otherwise it is working and even the left swipe Google Now works. Visit the links below to get add Google account and get all the apk files under Latest Google Apps.

Nice with a thread for this.
Worth mentioning perhaps:
Widgets does not work (will FC if you try to add one)
A longpress (for adding/moving icons) while the device is in landscape orientation will make the orientation do a barrel roll. Put the device in portrait mode while moving stuff about to avoid this.

Very cool as an experiment. However, I continue to recommend to people who want an "Android-esque" experience on their HDX that they:
* Install Vire Launcher from 1mobile.com, since it allows a limited number of wallpapers (built into the launcher itself), rather than just having a black background.....and since it also has clock widgets
* Install the new Google Search, without Play Services, and put a Google Icon on their home screen. This allows you to use Google Voice Searches, with the exception of NOW cards, as with any other Android tablet. You can even get the "OK Google" hot voice command to work.

This sounds great! Just to clarify, does this mean we can use Google Play Store to install apps and games? Or do we have to side load them? Sorry for the noob question.

Nope, still need to sideload apps. Google Play Store will require root which has not been achieved yet.

TWRP is not a option if your device is running FireOS 14.3.2.8 or above.
Safestrap v4 can be installed on (rooted) FireOS v4.5.2 and v4.5.5.1. Will not work on versions below or between. Two custom roms are compatible with Safestrap v4: Nexus v4 and CM11. See links for relevant discussion. Key points:
- never perform a stock 'factory reset' with Safestrap installed; brick is likely
- always flash roms to the STOCK slot with Safestrap v4 (replaces FireOS)
- never create or populate secondary slots (contrary to most youtube video guidance; just don't)
- always keep a copy of the rom installation zip on device (root of sdcard) for recovery purposes
- read what needs to be done, understand it and ask questions if needed
- there are many good summaries in the threads but no 'sticky' guide or how-to video. Gota read ...
Edit: Crosspost here
The title says it all.
I want pure nexus 7.0 and the google dialer and messaging app from google to be the ones instead of the AOSP ones.
How can I remove the stock ones and keep the google ones instead.
Yes i can always download them from play store but i don't wanna keep multiple apps in my phone.
Any suggestions how to do it?
You can download the .apk's from apkmirror.
Or use the search function, because there are tons of releases in the themes and apps section about customizing to a Pixel phone, including enabling assistant, bootanimation, systemUI and so on
You said it yourself, you can download them from playstore, or apkmirror. And you can delete aosp ones with simple root explorer, or any app such as titanium backup
You'll need root and Titanium Backup or similar to remove the apps.
Be sure to have the APKs on your phone already before doing this.
It's best to buy the Pro version of TiBu and freeze the apps, so that if you ever have to factory reset on the go (and don't have access to a machine with fastboot), then you can still do it because it will unfreeze them for you.
I've been using a fire tv stick remote with my NP since pretty well day one. It has a few more buttons that I find makes life much easier. Since the November update using the on screen keyboard doesn't work. It looks like the NP/GBoard is registering the enter button as a right arrow. The remote still works perfectly everywhere else. I've tried the basics, reboot, unplug, clear cache, deleting GBoard updates, and repairing the remote. None of that has worked. I've been using the remote from the play store which works, but I'd rather not have to do that. Also, I can't find the original remote anymore, of course. I can find the remote for a DVD player I bought 17 years ago, but I can't find the remote for the nexus player. Any idea how to fix this?
I use the Fire TV remote as well because it doesn't have the same disconnect problems as the original remote. And I had the same issue with Oreo.
To fix it, I extracted the Leanback keyboard from the Nougat ROM and installed that. Then I went into Settings > Applications and disabled Gboard. The keyboard now works with the Fire TV remote within apps like the Play Store, but it still doesn't work in the search box in the launcher. But I don't really use search from the launcher since it can't even search Netflix, and I don't like the new launcher anyway. I figure I'll give it a little bit of time to see if they fix the issue (doubtful since apparently the Nexus Player won't be getting any more updates), and then I'll flash the old launcher too.
The Nougat keyboard (LeanbackIme.apk) is here. Since the Oreo update evidently removed it, it isn't replacing anything and so it can be installed just like any other APK:

The Nougat launcher (LeanbackLauncher.apk) is here. Since it replaces the Oreo launcher, it will probably need to be installed via root or custom recovery:

Thanks dude,
The remote actually works fine for everything other than the search. The main reason I'd like that to work is for use with TerrariumTV. I'll give the leanback keyboard and see if it helps, but I have my doubts. I don't have my NP rooted so I wont be able to try the launcher.
the problem is that any code for touchscreen is not recognized.... i use a usb remote with a physical keyboard in the back and a fly mouse option. with that i can cover any kind of keyboard requirement by the app..... then use the other remote to watch tv .....
I install leankey keyboard from Play store then go to settings and change keyboard to leankey. Haven't found anything it doesn't work on.

I guess it depends what search you're trying to get working. If you're talking about the search within a particular app, installing the Nougat keyboard should be enough, since the Nougat keyboard works fine with the Fire TV stick remote.
If you're talking about the search box at the top of the launcher, however, that's different. I suspected flashing the Nougat launcher would fix that, but I just tried it and it didn't work. So maybe it's a different app altogether. But I don't really use that search feature myself and I mostly just wanted the old launcher back, so I'm happy. For what it's worth, you don't need root to flash the Nougat launcher, just an unlocked bootloader.
In case anyone cares, here are the steps to flash the Nougat launcher without root
Prerequisite: your Nexus Player bootloader must be unlocked
Download the Nougat launcher from here: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=889964283620774815
Download the latest TWRP for the Nexus Player from here: https://dl.twrp.me/fugu/
Reboot your Nexus Player to the bootloader
Code:
sudo adb reboot bootloader
Boot TWRP
Code:
sudo fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-0-fugu.img
Once you're in TWRP, flash the Nougat launcher and reboot
Code:
mount /system
adb push LeanbackLauncher.apk /system/priv-app/LeanbackLauncher/LeanbackLauncher.apk
reboot
If you want to undo it, just reinstall the Oreo launcher by following the same steps with this file: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=889964283620774817

Ok so the apk file is unnecessary with root since the zip is in charge of that correct? This is actually interesting considering that the Amazon Launcher being disabled with root therefore losing functionality to accessing settings unless you were to use adb commands.
Edit: the apk was supposed to be installed, works 100%

Questions...
So does the Zip need to be flashed?
Then install the APK?
Is the Amazon launcher disable by doing this, or do I have to disable that myself?
Can you easily remove it?
The Zip file is for customize.
SourceCode for Android Studio.
You must disable it .
OK so disable
com.amazon.tv.launcher
?
1. install APK
2. Flash zip ( for customize if you want)
3. disable launcher
The zip, what does it modify and how do you go back?
Sorry for the questions, just want to know what to expect if i have an issue...
Install other Launcher.
For mantis maybe you need FTVLaunchX to start the alternate Launcher.
#adb shell pm disable com.amazon.tv.launcher
Install apk to access the settings without amazon Launcher.
The Zip the SourceCode to build apk.
I hope it is understandable now
Thanks bro, this works perfect with ATV Launcher 0.1.2 now i can access amazon built-in apps on 4k stick.
Thanks for this.
Couple of queries:
Lots of icons on my custom launcher. But all start off at sleep. Is this normal? If so why so many icons?
The command to disable the amazon launcher is not working and I do have root. Any ideas?
Edit: Not to worry about the above. I found a new version that gives me just the one icon
Also found the instructions to delete the amazon launcher so that is good.
Only problem that some might have is installing new apps from the amazon marketplace (or whatever they call it).
Any ideas about how to do this?

Amazon Market is not working.
You must sideload the apps.
Also you can push the apps over the Amazon Website to your Stick.
App Updates should be installed automatic.

Thanks for that.
I manage a lot of these sticks. Most I know the Amazon accounts for so will use the web site to push to them if they request new apps.
I will ask for the other account details but if they wont provide them I will send them to the website to install themselves if they want new apps.
It seems Amazon pushed out a new prime Video app today (or I was told about it today) that asks it you want to install it.
Was told it no longer works with this setup if it is installed. Was fine yesterday and no prompt to update then.
Might be a problem with the Prime Video app in general and not this setup, but all my sticks are running these fixes now.
Just tested on one and it is true. Trying to open Prime Video does nothing. Tried both the icons for it (one never worked but now both do not).
Will see if I can roll it back (once I find the original apk).
Thanks for this. So nice not to see the Amazon Launcher at all now.
