Hi,
I'm looking toward a Nook Touch because it looks to have better specs-wise than the forthcoming Kindle Touch (though Amazon has better backend/store support), but how stable is it if rooted? I'm intrigued about the possibility for using ezPDF, simple browser, etc. on a rooted Nook, but was concerned about any stability issues.
Thanks.
Once you get it rooted, it can be very stable. I've run ezpdf on mine before to read books for school on.
Once rooted, it is quite stable. Ezpdf and opera mini are the apps for your needs, and they are very responsive - they seem to be made for the nook
after rooting it just works the same as before. If anything can brake it, it's those modified frameworks and other jars so I keep myself away of that. So basically one can easily install and uninstall applications on rooted nook and that's it. I do not use market, so everything comes in apk which are rather clean after being uninstalled. With my approach to not modify framework or use gapps or market, the latest update of nook software provided by BN went really smooth and after reboot I had all my apps working - beside from those needing root access.
In my experience, stability is fine, but my root was apparently incomplete (did not have write access to some folders) and I decided to revert back to stock for now by doing the L+R factory reset. I wouldn't let that discourage you, but you must, must, must backup your N2E if you're gonna try rooting. You never know when it'd come in handy.

Does Dolphin Browser Mini work on rooted Nook, or is Opera the only 3rd party browser?
Also, is there a list somewhere of confirmed apps that work on a rooted Nook?
Thanks.
Bosun,
We have a list of working apps in this forum, under themes and apps in the main nook str menu.
Dolphin does work, but the address bar doesn't follow the link once you select it. But if you make a search in google and go to the link, or have the link in favorites, there is no problem.
I'm starting this thread so we can share ways to De-Amazon our kindle fire hd 7's and make them more Android like. Please post ways to remove as much of Amazon's stuff as we can. Including freezing apps, removing them, replacing them, build.prop tweaks, and really just anything we can safely do to our androkindles. I hope this will help us all have a more custom experience until custom rom's come out. My intention is for us to brainstorm so post what you want!
Root and Google Play for Amazon 7" Kindle Fire HD Software Version 7.2.3
Great idea, I will start with the basics:
1) Root Kindle: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045999&page=5
2) Install Google Play: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045999&page=5
3) Disable the Amazon OTA Updates, delete or move /system/ect/security/otacerts.zip to /sdcard/download - Reboot the Kindle.
4) Google Play to be the default Market move /system/app/MarketIntentProxy.apk to /sdcard/download - Reboot the Kindle
5) Disable lock screen ads. Rename /system/app/dtcp_apk.apk to dtcp_apk.apk.bak
(btw, I recommend using the rename method for other tricks as well; that way you don't need to remember where things go if you ever need to restore them.)
Facelift
6) Give the Kindle a facelift. Using Google Play, download and install Go Launcher HD.
Once installed, launch the new launcher through Apps, then click on the Kindle "Home" button to make Go Launcher HD your new default launcher.
This is part of our new NOOB Series. This one is How to: Install Go Launcher EX and HD Noob (Simple) Version
In this series we will install both Go Launcher EX and Go Launcher HD - I have selected these launchers since they are heavily supported and offer a great deal of options and Themes. Go Launcher EX has the largest number of options but it was designed around a Phone form factor not a Tablet form factor while Go Launcher HD was designed around a Tablet form factor. We personally use Go Launcher EX on the Kindle 7" HD due to the vast available Themes, plus it gets updated about every week, so if you find a Go Launcher EX bug, it will be aggressively resolved. We attempt to keep this tutorial updated regularly - adding information from the end users experience. We have recently upgraded the storage servers to increase uptime, you now have two options for the downloads both are ad free. Option one is a Dropbox Storage Server and Option two is a Ubuntu One Storage Server, if one is under maintenance you may use the other download link. When you are done with the tutorial, please take the time to post feedback, this is very important to us - without your feedback, we have no way of knowing if we are doing our job. Finally, if you feel we did a decent job, please think about donating to us using the "Donate to Me" button - this is how we make a living, without your kind donations we would no longer be able to do this for a living.

To be honest, I think nova launcher is quite a bit better than go launcher, but to each their own. Your guide series is great and I wish it had been out while I had been figuring out how to doing this Thanks for your hard work!

Thank you for the feedback.
Nova and Apex Launchers will come soon in our NOOB series. We first like to test the software for 60 days, then we create a "How to" after we verified the problems and potential solutions.

Thank you for the feedback. I wonder if the update had already downloaded before you deleted the otacerts.zip file?
I am still on 7.2.2
Let's look into this deeper. If the updates are still downloading we need to develop a mod ASAP. Once I receive your response we will
look into this issue with more detail.
If the Play Store is installed, can't the launchers be installed directly from there?
Thank you so much for posting this! I actually registered just to say thank you. I was so afraid of bricking my Kindle because it was a gift but after following this Go Launcher Ex works perfectly!

No problem, we are working with Go Launch trying to solve the Next Launcher bug since this is a
beautiful launcher.
More to come..........
I followed this guide to the T, but for some reason when I install Go Launcher EX it tells me it installed correctly but never shows up and never does the updating when rebooting. I have Go Launcher installed and that works fine, and when selecting the home button I never see Go Launcher EX. My kindle is displaying Go Launcher HD, Go Launcher Security, Go Locker and Home. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Hmmm, so if I understand you correctly, you are performing a Upgrade from Go Launcher to Go Launcher EX Correct?
You need to first remove Go Launcher, then reboot and perform the Go Launcher EX install as outlined. It is worth it
Go Launcher EX has a lot of power and features over the older Go Launcher..

Not to sure what you mean but the upgrade, but I'm going to go ahead and get rid or HD and install the EX 1st and see what that does for me. Plus I found a version of GO_Launcher_EX_3_23_1 that is newer then the one that you have posted. Is there a reason were using the older one or is the one that I have bogus?
Update: Just did all the steps again and I'm still not getting the EX only the HD and Security come up...not to sure why it's not installing. If I do a restore of the system will I loose my root access? I might just do that to clean up everything.
Update 2: I think for some reason the Go Launcher EX is called Go Launcher Security...don't know why but I just deleted it out of system\apps and now the Go Launcher security disappeared. SO why is it not called EX and instead called Security? Anyway I'll just install it again to see what happens.
Should I update?
I am being told by the market that there is a newer version of Go launcher EX. Should I update or is this particular version being specified because its designed for the Kindle?
Love your work by the way guys!!

Good question.
Yes, please perform the Update. Always perform the Market

Wow, this is a bit odd. Sorry for the delayed response we have been responding
to lot's of great questions. Yes, if you perform a factory reset you will loose Root
and have to Re-Root the Kindle. Go Launcher can be found in /data/app/
the service name is com.gau.go.launcherex-1.apk although performing a
Uninstall should have removed this service. Remove all instances of Go
Launcher, reboot and try the install again. Do you have Google Play? You
Can perform an install using Google Play too. Just FYI.
Hi
Can anyone briefly explain what is the best way to install 3rd-party launcher as a system app on Fire HD 10 (2017)?
I understand, by so doing, widgets become usable without the need to do "appwidget grantbind".
I found a number of methods to go about a similar task (generally as well as for Fire HD 10), from using "push" (https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/debloat-fire-hd-2017-kindle-prime-music-t3729209; https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/27/how-do-i-properly-install-a-system-app-given-its-apk) to installing an app as system app under Titanium Backup or ES Explorer. I'd like to learn and use the best method for Fire HD 10.
DragonFire1024 apparently suggests that a launcher should be installed as a system app to /system/priv-app (and not /system/app). If I'm mistaken, please correct me.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76485222&postcount=284
My Fire 10 (2017) is rooted using retyre's offline method (thanks, retyre). I used SuperSu 2.79 SR5, but has been updated to 2.82. I can see su in system/xbin so I assume this is not a systemless root.
At the moment, Evie Launcher has been installed normally from Google Play Store, and the Fire Launcher disabled. I'd of course enable Fire Launcher first before trying to install Evie as a system app. I've also extracted the Evie apk (240 dpi) in case the file is required for system installation.
Any suggestions or pointers on the best way to install a 3rd-party launcher as a system app on Fire HD 10 would be most welcome. As a noob, a step-by-step explanation would be ideal.
Thanks!
Hi again
Whilst reading thru DragonFire1024's hack threads, I realized I needed to enable adbd insecure before "pushing".
After enabling Fire Launcher and uninstalling Evie, I followed his steps and pushed an extracted Evie_is.shortcut.apk to /system/priv-app, and chm 644.
Evie is now the default Launcher, but Widgets still don't work. Trying to add a new one takes me to Settings.
Have I missed anything about enabling Widgets? How do I check that Evie is now indeed a sytem app? For instance, would it be necessary to install Google Clock as a system app, too, to have a home page digital clock?
Thanks again!
Am I mistaken as to Evie widgets activation?
From the following post, are Nova and Google Now the only widget-ready launchers?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73314973&postcount=28
For Evie, do I still need to do:
adb shell appwidget grantbind --package <PACKAGE.name.of.your.launcher>
to enable widgets, even though the tablet is rooted and Evie is a system app?
Any suggestions welcome! Thanks.
Hi, I'm new here and kinda new to Kindle. I have a Kindle Fire 10 HD (2019) and I used the Fire Toolbox to get rid of all the bloatware and stuff. Works great, but if I set my launcher to Nova using the Toolbox, I can't restart the device without it reverting back to the original launcher. I also tried launcher hijacker but it got blocked. Is there way to change the launcher (I want Nova) for good or a way to root this device? It's running Fire OS 7.3.2.2
PS: I did try searching on here for this but couldn't find anything
I think that by restarting it resets it back to the default, which is annoying. AFAIK theres no way to root with the version you have either. However, if you have Nova installed and you do reboot, you should be able to open nova, possibly youll need to go under Settings->Applications and find it there. Under Nova settings, you can force the 'use launcher by default' to pop up, and set it there. I know some people have had luck with the toolbox by using older versions to install certain portions (like the hijacker), possibly you can side load it

Try to change the launcher using the pm set-home-activity command in ADB (requires Windows or Linux computer)
Code:
adb shell pm set-home-activity com.teslacoilsw.launcher/.NovaLauncher
