Ink refresh with 3rd party apps on rooted Nook Simple Touch Glowlight - Nook Touch General

As the subject implies I can't set 3rd party apps on my rooted Nook to update the e-ink screen using 3rd party reader apps. It only happens randomly and not often so my screen looks "dirty". I use Alreader and it has specific settings for e-readers which I have tried but with no result. Has anyone found any solution?

That sounds pretty normal, it might vary depending on firmware and kernel version. Personally I noticed that some 3rd party reader apps (Cool Reader, Alreader) were able to control screen refresh on fw 1.1.0, but seemed to have little or no control on fw 1.2.1.
If you want to try different kernels, they might have some effect, but probably won't give 3rd party apps full control over refresh.
You could also try the "Nook Clear Screen" app to force a refresh when necessary.

[Q] Clicking on APPS tab in stock loader usually shows nothing on shelves

I noticed this after installing a bunch of apps and such and rooting my Kindle Fire that when I click on the APPS tab on the stock launcher GUI, usually I have to either click on Cloud and then back on Device for any of my apps to show up on the shelves. I don't understand how the stock launcher has issues looking for the installed apps and listing them every time. If I use GO Launcher EX, everything is listed fine every time I click to view my apps. The stock launcher really seems to suck. Is there any way to fix this on the stock one or should I just use GO Launcher or another one as my default? I was trying to keeps it somewhat stock in appearance instead of forcing myself to use 3rd party things to "fix" the stock items on the Fire. Thanks!
I've noticed that issue as well. Very frustrating having to wait for list of apps to populate.

Widgets Stopped Sticking to Homescreen

A weird thing has been happening to my S5 since I got it, both before and after rooting. For some reason, not all widgets want to stick to my homescreen in the stock Samsung launcher. When I first got the phone, they all worked, as far as I could tell (I didn't investigate fully at the time, since I had no reason to suspect that they wouldn't work). After a little while, though, I found that I couldn't make Beautiful Widgets widgets stick. I long-pressed the homescreen, chose BW, selected a widget style/size, and customized it in the BW menu, just like it's supposed to work. But no widget appeared on the homescreen. What was weirder was that in the BW app itself, it listed my widget as working, even though it obviously wasn't. Uninstalling/reinstalling the app did nothing but clear the "existing" widget I had created from the list within the app interface.
At first, I thought this problem was limited to BW, so I just got rid of it and decided to jump to another app, but then I found that HD widgets didn't work, and another similar clock/weather-style widget group wouldn't work. Thinking maybe I had created some sort of data corruption, I did a factory reset, which worked for a while, but eventually the widgets stopped working again. After rooting, and finding that the problem still existed, I factory reset again, and started putting my apps back on one at a time, testing to see if it was a conflicting app causing the problem. No luck. The widgets worked until some random time when they simply no longer would.
I finally resolved to go without this kind of widget, since it wasn't a necessity, just a convenience. The problem is that I've now noticed that other kinds of widgets aren't working, either, including some that I'd really like to have work, like the Tasker timer widget.
Has anyone else noticed this problem occurring on their Verizon S5s? I'm going to look into which widgets actually still work (because some do), and which don't, and compile a spreadsheet, see if I can come up with a reason. I doubt I'll be successful, but it might be useful for other people who actually know how to fix things.
PS. Another weird thing is that the widgets stick to Nova Launcher homescreens just fine. Now, that would be okay, except that I want to do some theming now that we can flash some ROMs, and I thought that theming only applies to the stock launcher. Plus, I'm guessing that this isn't normal behavior and I do want to find out why it's happening, not just use a workaround.
After some more digging, I've found that, with only a few exceptions, the widgets that require some sort of customization before placement on the homescreen are the ones that don't work. All widgets that are simply "click-and-drop" work fine. But, if I click a widget and it opens up a configuration page, 9 times out 10 no widget will appear on the homescreen after the configuration.
It doesn't seem to matter what size the widget is, whether the widget's app is stock or third-party, or if it is solo on the widget page or part of a group of widgets from the same app.
Plus, there are some exceptions to this, such as Google Play widgets, Mint, and Email Me Pro. Others work sometimes, depending on what configuration you apply to the widget. For example, the stock Picture Frame widget works when you shuffle the pictures, and doesn't when you choose where to draw pictures from.
Very strange. I'm thinking my only course of action might be to go nuclear and flash a completely different stock image onto my phone through Odin. I downloaded one from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53437805&postcount=1289. If I'm correct, this tar image should be exactly the same as the one that was on my phone from the factory, presumably minus whatever problem mine currently has. We'll see how it goes, I guess.
Okay, so flashed the tar image through Odin, reloaded some stuff without rooting (yet), and everything seems to be going fine so far. I'm pretty sure that by this point in my previous experiment, the widgets had stopped working. I think it must have been some sort of corrupted file deep inside my system that isn't there now.

Nook Simple Touch Noob Question

Hi
I have a nook simple touch - 1.2.1 firmware not rooted yet, I only want to use it as an e-reader but the ghosting is awful compared to my wifes kindle of the same generation (non touch).
I've been trying to look around and find out what I can do, is there a way to force it to refresh every page, some searching seems to suggest the issue was better on older firmwares, why B&N didnt include an option like amazon to force refesh every page who knows (that's not enabled on my wifes kindle) - the Kindle is just much easier to read in direct bright sunlight but I'm sure theres some tweaking that can be done to improve it
I have to say I am surprised by your description of your NST. I've been paying close attention to mine today while reading and I may be losing my vision but I can't see the ghosting you are describing. I've always felt the native Reader and its default settings worked really well. In some other apps there may be issues with ghosting, but not in the reader.
I'm running FW 1.21 also and while I have rooted and altered my device a lot, to my knowledge I haven't done anything to the functioning of the Reader app. Are you sure you don't have some kind of hardware issue?

It could be a hardware issue but it's well out of warranty, I do notice the ghosting on the kindle too so maybe im just susceptable to spotting it and having it irritate me, just wondered if there are any tweaks to control thow often it refreshes as its ok once it refreshes the screen

Seemed to be very complex, so I went for root and under there is the option for how many pages before full refresh
also installed cool reader for good measure and very happy - problem solved

Excellent! Your rooting method must be different from mine but now we're both happy
Good job, @nmyshkin!
Thanks everyone, my main concern was rooting would stop it behaving like an e reader but relaunch I a great launcher and the default options for home and library mean I have best of both and importantly control over the refresh as my nook does appear to ghost far more than a friends on comparison, for the £29 paid over a year ago the nook is awesome
Comparing my nook to a friends the contrast looks really different so maybe this unit wasnt calibrated right - i'm now looking for a contrast adjuster to see if that solves me needing to fully refresh the screen so much as that will be using more battery

Forcing immersive-mode apps to NOT run in immersive mode?

OK, so it seems to be a common thing here where people are wanting to HIDE the navigation buttons as much as possible, but I'm the other way around - I want them on my screen at all times unless there's an actually good reason to hide them.
Some apps, like MX Player Pro, have an option to hide or show the navigation bar - status bar gets hidden by default, as the phone would be in landscape mode for watching videos.
Others do not. Thinking about apps like Netflix, Vudu and such... and the fact that the S8's screen is wider than 16:9, I really don't see a good reason to disable the navigation buttons, except for them possibly being distracting (which they aren't, not to me)
My understanding is that even using the adb commands found in other threads on XDA, you can set it to hide the navigation bar and/or status bar for any apps you want, but NOT the reverse. I tried opening Super Mario Run (that's another one that uses immersive mode, and I'm not quite sure WHY), opening adb shell while it was going, and no matter what command I ran the bar would not show back up. It's like apps can overwrite the system-wide immersive mode preset.
Is there ANY way to do this short of editing the .apk files to remove immersive mode from their manifests so they can't attempt to enter it? The obvious problem with doing that is that any time there's a Play Store update I'd have to redo the modification, and reinstall it from scratch because of .apk signatures.
Based on how MX Player works, and how some apps start immersive and then go back to normal (Pokémon GO seems to use immersive mode for the Niantic logo, but then returns to normal right after that), I'm assuming it's an option inside the app that can be toggled on and off, much like full-screen videos on a PC. But like how web browsers ask if you want to allow a site to use fullscreen, I wish I could do the same to my apps.
+1

Did you find the way?
I'm looking for this too but preferably a shell command to use in tasker on a per app basis

No
But given what I've read, and from experimentation, it looks like it's impossible to do this without having root.
I'm not sure *why* but unless someone can prove otherwise, it seems that the System UI can't override apps - even user-installed apps! Sorta weird if you ask me...
What I was trying to do instead was decompile the .apk and remove the function that puts the app in immersive mode. Problem is, I don't understand the smali language at all... my trials just resulted in failures to compile the app again. Bah. If anyone knows about Android app development and actually somewhat understands smali, let me know...

Ok I'll let you know. As for the knowledge I'm a beginner too... I'm trying to learn a bit about what can be done using Tasker but I haven't found anything. As you said it seems impossible to force the bars to stay visible if the app hides it. When I was on KitKat there was an Xposed module called app settings that allowed just that, among other things, but I'm on Nougat now and Xposed is not available so... We'll keep looking
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S8+ using XDA Labs
That's what I mean - you need root to do it (Xposed obviously requires root), and I don't really understand why since in theory a user app from the Play Store shouldn't be able to overwrite system settings. If it was a matter of getting the built-in camera to not be immersive or something, that's another story.
The most you can do with Tasker, really, is mess with secure_settings. I've tried this extensively, and all you can do is set the SYSTEM DEFAULT to immersive on or off - changing it to on makes it so apps not normally in immersive become immersive, but changing it to off does nothing because, well, the default is off anyway...

Hello,
I have root and I also cannot disable immersive mode. I haven't found any xposed module that allow this and App Settings prevent fulscreen also doesn't change anything. Do you know any other solution with root access?
Thanks in advance!

Sadly, no I don't. I've still never found a solution for this, with or without root. And more and more app developers are updating their apps to support the screen ratio... Super Mario Run is now locked to "fullscreen" mode, you can't put it back into windowed compatibility mode anymore, and it takes up 100% of the screen with no room for the navbar anyway.

Nougat Webview inplementation on G5Plus - Weird

Hi Guy's. I've been running CM/LineageOs on my phones since forever, so I'm not really familiar about the default behaviours of stock android, and there's something that is bothering me on my G5 that I'm not sure is related to the system itself or to some sort of settings, and would be really thankful if someone could help me out.
Basically, in LineageOS 14.1 when you follow a link sent by someone, the link will open as a new tab on your default browser (be it the AOSP or Chrome, or any browser you choose to be your default). That's been the standard behaviour in all versions of CM till this day (I've been using it since CM7) as far as I know.
However, on my G5Plus, still running stock android due to warranty, everytime I follow a link or click my weather widget, instead of opening a normal tab on my default browser, I'll get this small rectangle that loads the page, but has no controls like the default browser, which is quite annoying in my opinion as I could want or need to save this page as a favourite, print it or do whatever I feel like with it, and this Webview rectangle won't allow me to do any of that. I'm not sure I've made myself clear, so I'm adding a picture of what happens to illustrate it. In the picture, I'm following a link sent to me by a contact through a IM application.
If someone nows what I could do to make sure all links open as a new tab on the default browser, I would really appreciate the help. Sorry for the noob question, but on my (now dead) Galaxy S4 running LOS14.1 and on my Nexus 7 running stock MM, this doesn't happen.
I think this is some third party browser app which you have set as default.

Not really. I only have Chrome installed (it came pre-installed on my XT1683).
This has nothing to do with webview or chrome. You Mist have a third party App installed
Actually I've just found out what was the matter. For some reason, Setup Wizard (a system application) was acting like a browser. This is a common problem with other devices running Nougat as I just found out (Samsung Galaxy S6, S7, S8, Nexus 5x, and many others). I've found the solution on a Google Pixel forum, and what needs to be done is to disable setup wizard. As my phone was just taken out of the box, and the only third party app installed was WhatsApp I'm pretty sure this bug is within the system.
