Authenticity of the phone? - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've recently bought this phone from a 3rd seller who said that the phone was an original that came from China. But I've started having doubts if I made the right purchase from the right seller. There has been no complains from other users, but I doubt they're the kind of people that could differentiate an original from a counterfeit even if their lives depended on it.
What I want to ask, is there any way to verify what the seller promised? That the cellphone is in fact an original moto?
Cheers!

$325- Google Nexus 4 16GB Brand New?!? Google disabled phone?? Help??

Hello fellow forums users. After getting a bad screen nexus 4, and later selling it. I decided to give the Nexus 4 another chance. I just found a great deal on Ebay for a nexus 4 16GB from a seller that has 64 100% positive feedback. But... there seems to be an issue with the phones imei, the seller says that google disabled the phones. I tried looking on google on anything on the matter but I came up short. Here is a copy of the items description on Ebay... What do you think? is there any way that Google can DISABLE phones like that?? ive never heard of that before with unlocked cell phones.... any help would be greatly apreciated.
Original Ebay item description:
The listing is for BAD ESN Nexus 4 16GB BRAND NEW SEALED IN BOX. I ordered it straight from Google and the package went missing. Google gave me refund right away but the package arrived a few weeks later. I did not want the phones so i wanted to send it back to Google but I was told to keep them since they are disabled anyway. I am thinking the phone is disabled by BAD ESN or IMEI. The phone is still sealed in box and never been opened. I am selling these phones AS IS. ALL SALE IS FINAL and NO RETURN WILL BE ACCEPTED. SHIPPING WORLDWIDE
Yes Google can disable the phone remotely. That phone will not turn on. Spend the extra 25 dollars and buy it from Google play store.

If you buy phone from playstore. They can remotely disable everything. Nexus 4,7,10. As long as you bought it from playstore, don't worry. they
can disable the device in just one second. I would suggest you don't buy it unless google willing to activate the phone. I doubt it.

Hey chill, im not fencing anything. I found the listing on Ebay and since ive never heard of remote disabling I came here to ask as I dont want to throw my $325- away.
Yes Google can disable it and no there is no way anyone can enable it. Its worthless paying that much money. I would suggest to pay a little extra and buy it from Google.
sounds like a tmobile nexus 4 phone ans the account or line is past due or they stopped paying the bill making the phone listed under tmobile as blocked/bad imei

Thanks for your help, i was looking into the matter and all I could find where apps that let you remotely wipe your personal information on the device, but not actually BRICKING it. I went to google's play homepage, and in the returns/refund section I read that when you ask for a replacement phone, the remotely DISABLE the phone buts thats what I dont get. How do they do that? How does that work? will the phone not power on at all? do they block the imei number worldwide? any ideas?

Google has a well known back door into phones and they can pretty much do as they please but have limited their efforts so far to just removing malicious apps from peoples phones.
I would stay away from this phone for if the IMEI is blacklisted as stolen, which is pretty much a worldwide blacklist now, then it cannot be recovered as no carrier anywhere will activate it.
They won't remotely brick it... They'll just have the IMEI blacklisted. It will likely turn on, you just can't activate it anywhere.

I guess the question is whether that's Google bricking it or whether it's just a defective phone. I'd venture to say that it's a bad phone. If Google disables your phone, it's by adding your IMEI as stolen.

Can at&t verify if a phone has been reported lost or stolen?

Tomorrow im meeting up with a person to trade a iphone 5 for their Galaxy s4. We are meeting up at a at&t store and I wanted to ask you guys a question. Can a at&t rep at the store tell if the phone was reported lost or stolen? If it wasn't, is it possible for the person to report it stolen afterwards? What can I do to protect myself from this happening? Thanks in advance.

This has been a hot topic lately. There are a few threads about this, blacklisting a phone.
They can verify it isn't stolen at that moment, yes. But, they will not transfer ownership or notate the account. The person that bought the phone can report it stolen the next day, week, or even later than that.
You can't really do anything to protect yourself from this. AT&T also shares that list with T-Mo so the phone is blocked from both networks. Only the original owner can lift the ban.
Unfortunately this has made buying and selling a phone second hand a lot harder.

I wish Att would do something to help protect people from this new scam. I bought a s4 off swappa for a great price and I had the same concern. I took the chance since I pay for it with paypal and the guy had good feedback and he had other phones for sale. At least this way I have documentation that I bought it.

Do the transaction at an att store. It will be documented in there system eliminating the ability for them to falsely report it lost or stolen
BEAST......... that is all
Just got back from doing the trade. Seemed like an honest guy, he gave me the receipt and had no problem showing me his license and waiting out the process at the at&t store. Phone was never activated on his account, he paid full price for it. Even swap and all is well. I was still nervous so I took a pic of his license and even his license plate just in case but I dont see any problems going foward.
When I got my S4, the att rep noted the other persons account.

Value Basket Warning.... When things aren't as they should be.

Hi all,
I switched to the G4 a couple of months ago after growing tied of the Samsung empire.
I did some reading and discovered that only the European G4variant was unlockable. After some searching, I found value basket selling what they claimed yup be EU G4's at a very competitive price.
The phone was delivered and I began preparing to unlock the bootloader using the LG website. Imagine muy surprise when LG told me out was an Asian model and not unlockable.....
I approached value basket for an exchange and they said they'd get the imie reassigned to a European carrier. As you may have guessed, this didn't happen, I again asked for an exchange.... Still more excuses.... Please let us investigate e-mails... A few days ago I received an email telling me I'd had the phone too long to request an exchange....
The G4 is a great phone.... But I love to mod, tinker and install custom firmware.... So if you want a phone you can't mod, appalling customer service and to be lied to.... Try value basket.... Otherwise steer well clear.
sell it back on ebay...its like new anyway...but defenitely not a good idea to buy EU model in asia...its best to look for such in EU to get them.

Dead Pixel; **** Support for Canada and Rant

As many of you, I jumped on the Newegg.ca Pre-order which gave me the Axon 7, 64GB Quartz Gray with "North American Warranty" as well as the famous "Passport 2.0"
Here's the deal...
They don't ship to Canada. Basically making that process worthless. I got a dead pixel after a month and a half. Discoloured on the right side of the screen. So Naturally I thought, no problem, let's get an RMA. This is what happened:
Started a Chat with ZTE USA > Not a problem he says. Does some troubleshooting. Says to call a number to get the RMA completed.
I call the number, ZTE USA > Not a problem he says. Processes everything. Asks for my address; "Oh sorry, we don't ship to Canada. Please contact the Canadian ZTE."
I call the Canadian Number and redirects me to ZTE USA again > I explain my situation, he understands. Tells me he still can't ship it to a Canadian Address. I escalate to a Manager.
Manager speaks for 2 minutes then disconnects the call.
Call once more. Average hold time is about 10 to 15 minutes btw. Get transferred back to the Manager.
Says he doesn't know why it says "North American Warranty" as it's only for the US. BUT THE ****ING CANADIAN WEBSITE SAYS PASSPORT SUPPORT TOO!!!
He gives me a link to some ZTE Authorized Center for Canada. They charge me $650 CAD and are shipping out a replacement. I'll get it soon. Then once I return my device, I'll be refunded the $650.
This is by far the ****tiest support I've gotten on a device that boasts having an amazing warranty. I might sell it once I have the replacement. **** this noise, I've never had an issue with OnePlus. Should've stuck with them. OPO was excellent. The OnePlus Two was good and the Three would be too.
****.

Hey you choose to make it hard for yourself, sorry you live in Canada and want to use US retailers, you should have bought the phone through a Canadian distributor if you didn't want a headache. You first clue should have been when new egg said no to shipping.

Looks like they went out of their way to honor a Canadian warranty when the phone was purchased at a US retailer.

B.S. newegg.ca is a Canadian distributor, charging local currency and tax and even have a local warehouse. It's not B&H or Jet.com.

Bye, we don't care. At this price point deal with the service or go buy a Pixel or Iphone. They have problems too but you may get them resolved sooner.
I live in Oz (Australia), this phone isn't even available here... Had to get it from o'seas.
Will be interesting if I ever have a problem, which thankfully I haven't...
Comments are unfairly passing blame on the OP. Let's put ourselves in his shoes: if your Axon had a warranty issue and the support number doesn't help you until you're escalated/transferred three times, with agents contradicting advertised warranty guarantees, you'd be upset.
Newegg.ca charges in Canadian dollars, charges Canadian tax, and advertised the Passport 2.0 program on the product page with all the details. There's absolutely no reason why we shouldn't get the same warranty service when the same Passport 2.0 program is advertised on the Canadian retailer.
To those saying "we don't care", we don't care that you don't care. It's important for Canadians to know this is what they'll be facing if they try to use ZTE's warranty, it was very useful that the OP posted this.
Even though it's terrible to charge as insurance for the advanced replacment, and it's deplorably poor service compared to what they're advertising, at least it's some warranty. That's more than Samsung Canada can say. My brand new Galaxy Nexus barely used for a few days got dead/stuck pixels and after 3 months of back and forth with Samsung Canada their "managers" told me that essentially they have no policy on dead pixels for phone screens, only TVs, so I can go **** myself they won't exchange it. This is after they had me send in the phone twice, and both times it was returned with the firmware downgraded to the oldest version possible.

Are you serious right now fam? I have the full right to express my frustration as I purchased this from Newegg.ca (That's the Canadian Website if you can't tell). On the item page it states it's a North American Warranty. It states I have a Passport 2.0 Support. On the Official ZTE Page in Canada, it states I have those support options such as "Advanced RMA" yet they can't ship to Canada? They want me to drive to the border to pick out the replacement? Even though they are confirming in several places that the support is readily available.
Don't be sorry about me living in Canada. Be sorry about ZTE blatantly LYING to us stating they offer something they don't.
Just out of curiosity, what is passport 2.0? Is Newegg selling from US to Canada and that is where the confusion is? Maybe you can just return the phone and move on. If I couldn't get the support promised, I probably would too. It's tough because these midranges now have killer specs but crap customer service.
I just returned the Honor 8 because of loose and card holder. CS kept telling me I needed to hard reset the phone despite having done that and trying different cards. I just couldn't live with 32gb of storage and no SD card. It sucks because I like the size of the Honor 8.
To those speaking ignorantly, please note that Newegg, in Canada, is Axon 7's official retailer, and ZTE says so themselves. OP got all this trouble because of misleading advertising, not by his supposed carelessness.
Bull*** buddy.
ZTE has full passport warranty in Canada. I just got a phone of newegg.ca the bootloader on it went wonky on a OTA update.
I went to ZTE support, opened a chat and 10mis later I had all the info to get a free new phone shipped to me from Canada.
ZTE's warranty is done by dfComputers in toronto and they are quite helpful.
http://zte.dfcomputer.ca/create_service.php?warranty=in
They currently don't have stock of the phones but they will replace a broken phone for free with a new one or you can send your phone it to be repaired instead.
I didn't need to struggle for hours to get the info about the warranty, it was given to me right away.
compare ZTE's support to Oneplus for example and ZTE is 10x better.
I've had pretty good support from ZTE sofar, othe than a stock issue they've been very helpful.

"Received a demo S8" oh really? Maybe ask the store from where it was stolen from, they probably know the process to take it out of retail mode. If you bought it legitimately then it's the sellers responsibilty to provide a working phone. Is the wifi-only mode because the IMEI is blacklisted? I guess you don't live up to your username. Just kidding.
I googled it, there are pages and videos that tell you how to remove retail mode.
Go into development settings and turn off demo mode.. it's that easy ...
Settings...
About phone...
Tap build number until it says unlocked...
Then back out to setting
Then development settings
Then go down and turn demo off

Hello there

Thanks
Wow.... Its amazing all these Demo phones getting stolen and sold already.
I am not blaming anyone who buys them on Ebay... but realize this. Once the stores send it in, the new blacklisting methods on carriers share among the carriers. Once its listed. Account gets flagged saying you have an unauthorized device. After that, they suspend the account till you put a clean IMEI.
I know AT&T and its network sister partner services do this for sure.
I would say those who buy this from ebay as a Demo device, or from Craigslist. Ask them for the Invoice receipt or proof of purchase. (Claim in case of warrenty issues) if they stutter or make up an excuse. Realize its a stolen store phone which will get tracked. They may not go after the small 100$ or entry level phones but the high end galaxies and iphones... they sure will.

*facepalm*.
These are demo units, they are built with no IMEI or any of the cell antennas.
These are bought to use as WiFi only devices usually.
They are not blacklisted stolen units, those are completely different (and do exist a lot on eBay).

o.0 Where do you work at? Cause the "Demo" phones "I" get are fully functional from samsung. Then I install the retail demo software on it, which has the password. It syncs up with the demo software for that phone and off it goes. I can disable functions, protect it from hard resets and even open it all back up again.
Yes, they quite so have an IMEI.
However in fairness. If you have a wifi only S8 "demo" unit. Please share the screenshot of it showing no imei in the about phone info area.

All demo units in Qatar and MENA region are like that (in Samsung shops), I'll get you a screenshot when I go out sometime.
It will show IMEI 0000000000
Here is an example demo phone http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Gal...198937?hash=item3d3ac81fd9:g:HyUAAOSw9OFZE-Kz
The back will have a NOT FOR SALE sticker without the usual IMEI printout even. Just a SRN
I see, so in those regions eh?
I know here in USA, Its a fully working model. Just is softwared to demo mode it.
