Moto X Style updates without cell carrier?

I'm thinking about getting a Moto X Style just for use everywhere I have wifi coverage (I'd have no cellular service/carrier at all). Does anyone know if I will still get all of the security/OS updates or can they only come from a carrier?

MOTO G4 PLUS VoLTE support & JIO SIM

Thread Closed Per OP Request
Hello Everyone, I am using Moto G4 Plus (XT1643) with JIO 4G SIM. It is on LTE data but VoLTE box is not appearing in status bar. I have to use JIO4GVoice App to place call and receive call and I have to enable data all the time to call or sending sms that causing battery draining. When my phone natively supports VoLTE then why should I use 3rd party app. Please help me. Thanks.
Jio SIM is not supported on Moto g4 plus. You won't get network.

Bro I am using JIO SIM on G4 Plus I got the SIM by showing barcode generated on G4 Plus I am using Data as LTE and can place call and receive call from JioJoin/Jio4G Voice App. Network is showing. And why did u say its not supported???? Even Motorola Forum Moto Agent does say it supports VoLTE on JIO.
That's because I don't get it and that's what the reliance guy here told me. If you got it, good for you. I just shared my experience.

Tell that reliance guy that Moto is on the Welcome Offer since Sept. 5 and it is a 4G phone as well as VoLTE phone.
I have jiofi and got the SIM a lot earlier. So no issues. Just need to carry my jiofi with me where ever I go.
On second thoughts, maybe it depends on how you get the SIM. You used the barcode generated on your Moto G4 to get the SIM. I got it using the preview offer by buying a jiofi. They might be blocking services based on that. Just a wild guess.
I can make volte calls using jiofi. That you already know I guess.

Lol i'm using jio sim from 1.5 months in moto g4 plus!
It supports VoLTE & you doesn't need any app for calling...!
And also you have to be on stock rom for VoLTE support... because as of now no rom supports VoLTE...if you flash custom rom then you have to use jio 4g voice call for calling...!?
Moto G4 plus supports VoLTE natively

Jio operates on LTE 3,5 and 40 Bands. Moto G4 Plus supports all the 3 bands.
Technically Moto G4 plus supports, but what Reliance Tech guy meant was that Mobiles from Moto was not under Reliance Preview Offer (back then).
But as of 5th of September, Moto mobiles got added. In fact all phones that support 4G (irrespective of Brands) are added under Reliance Welcome Offer.
Also, the SIM you get with JioFi won't work with any 4G devices (not just Moto G4), because it is locked with the JioFi's MAC address.
I'm using Moto G4 with Jio 4G sim since the day it was delivered to me (next day to the launch). I bought it for the same purpose as I had to use JioJoin in my existing Nexus 5 and missing TD Band40(2300MHz).
It works very well and supports all bands as said above by @manubhargav
1. You need to keep the sim in slot 1 to use VoLTE (LTE only can be used in slot 2 also)
2. You will get "Enhanced 4G/LTE Mode" in "Cellular networks" settings in More network settings, this is VoLTE, you need to check this.
If you still don't get VoLTE, let me know.
Edit: @arkadeep2008 I just realized, you asked Moto G4 Plus (XT1043) -- both are different things. Moto G4 Plus should be XT1643, or if you have XT1043, it's G3 instead. Hope that helps.
I knew something was not right. I am not nuts afterall, lol!!!

Your JioFi sim will not work as it is locked to the device, even if you get the network, it will show a network sign-in page and ultimately a "Limit Exhausted" message in the page. This applies to the SIMs activated with LYF phones too. Though, it was said that they will unlock the SIM after preview offer, but seems welcome offer is the continuation for the same.
SIM with Preview Offer from any other handset (Samsung/Moto/etc) would work on any LTE/VoLTE phones.
So it does depend on how you get your jio SIM.

It is selected, and it is in SIM 1. Still no VoLTE box. Tapping on "Turn off VoLTE Provisioned Flag" does nothing.
My experience (with other carriers) is that it depends how the SIM gets provisioned. I had a SIM from T-Mobile for my unlocked phone and that worked in any phone. But when I tried a SIM that came in one of their locked phones, it didn't work in my unlocked phone. Even if that phone got eventually unlocked, the SIM was still unusable in any other phone.
Also the Enhanced LTE option appears only when a VoLTE provisioned sim is inserted.
As per the info on:
https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/G9Yb2/motorola-moto-g4-plus-dual-sim-lte-32gb-xt1643, the g4 plus should support band 40, which is what gets the VoLTE working.
However, while checking the inbuilt Motorola program menu LTE test settings on my XT1643 the bands listed under LTE Band Selection were: 1,3,5,8. All of which was perfect had it not been for my carrier officially only running FDD bands 3 and 5, so it may not be that Band selection menu corresponded to my CARRIER'S available bands AND NOT the phone's.
I am yet to test my other carrier's sim, which offers VoLTE calling and officially runs band 40 and bands 3 and 5.
Given there haven't been any accounts on here about successful VOLTE connectivity with compatible carriers, it's probably best to wait before drawing any inference.

I called the JIO customer care. They told me that maybe its my phone's firmware glitch, kindly wait for next firmware or software update it will get fixed. So my question is I don't like this recent July patch along with stability improvement update. If I want to go back to previous build how do I do that?? Can anyone tell??

Make sure by putting the sim in a already working VoLTE phone and go to the service center, as all other G4 Plus are known to be working.

I am wondering latest OTA update ruined the VOLTE, is there any way I can go back to previous build w/o voiding warranty??

volte on moto x style xt1572

Does moto x style support Volte? If it does how to activate it?
Moto X Style's hardware does support VoLTE but it isn't enabled by Motorola as of yet. It will be enabled by a software update and that's not rolled out yet.
It does on Verizon and T-mobile (on the MXPE at least), although most reports are it is of poor quality. It does not work on Jio using VoLTE.

These are security patches, minor updates. Not upgrades... TBH, I know we are on the upgrade list for Nougat, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

Because Lenovo simply doesnt care about the users of Style.
They sold more units of X play as compare to style so to make more customers happy they are focusing on X play customer base.
My advice to you never buy Moto products any more.
I faced the same when Moto G 2014 got Lollipop update 4 5 months before moto X 2013.
I am facing the same with Moto X Style as well.
So I placed my phone in the box and got a Red Mi note 3. Believe me RN3 is better than Moto X Style (except display).
Say Bye bye to Lenovorola.

g4 plus on verizon postpaid?

Hi, I know this question has been asked before but I see mixed answers. So I got a used Moto G4 plus off ebay (actually by mistake, i meant to buy an E plus to be used on my existing verizon postpaid account). I know the G4 plus is not officially supported by verizon but I thought I should give it a try anyway.
I tried to pop my sim card from my current verizon phone into it and it doesn't work. when i switched the network to 4g/lte then the G4 can use data but not voice or text. So I am just wondering if I should tinker some more or it definitely will not work because the hardware is lacking. I read posts about how some were able to just put an active sim card in there and get it to work but that was probably a different version of it?
This moto G4 plus is XT1641, build MPJ24.139.23.3, running android 6.0.1. I think this is probably not a "regular" XT1641 because it does say 32gb but only has 2gb ram and only 1 sim slot (the "regular" XT1641 that I looked up has 32gb, 3gb ram and dual sim).
and I did root this moto G4 plus before even checking compatibility. I felt so smart back then but thinking back that was a really dumb thing to do.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
