Rom with VPN tethering fix built in? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. I am wondering if there is any current rom out that has the tethering issue fixed while connected to a vpn.
My setup now is basically stock rooted running a few Xposed modules. Wifi tether works out of the box on the phone (VZW), however when i connect to my vpn the wifi tether doesn't transmit data.
I found a app called TetherNet on the play store, and that fixes the problem. I can tether fine while running my vpn on my phone and all all traffic from devices connected to the mobile hotspot go through the VPN if using the TetherNet app. I am not sure what the TetherNet app does to fix this.
I am curious if there is any rom that has whatever fix the TetherNet app does built in.
Thank you.

Are you trying to use VPN on the device and tether?
Use VPN on the computer and pass through the device.
VPN creates an encrypted tunnel to the VPN host/server.
Tethering shares the connection but not through an encrypted tunnel.
You would need a VPN/Tethering app. Currently they conflict.
I have not seen it every work. I've been tethering and using VPN for years.
If you find something that will let you use VPN on the device and tether, I'd like to know.

I did find an app that works to share the Tunnel through the mobile hotspot and have your traffic from any connected device secure. It's called TetherNet found here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ilmubytes.tethernet&hl=en
I double checked to make sure i was being tunneled. If I am connected to the VPN on my phone and i connect to my hotspot on my PC WITHOUT using TetherNET my traffic is NOT Tunneled. After I hit the Share VPN button on TetherNet app on my phone, when checked my Traffic from the PC is tunneled. So there is a way to do it. For some reason android kills the app after a few hours, looking at how to have android ignore that app now so it is never killed off. Any suggestions on how to keep the app alive permanently?
Also it is somewhat difficult to connect tablets to the mobile hotspot, at first none of my tablets would obtain a IP address, I found a workaround. If I start the mobile Hotspot and then connect a tablet before turning on TetherNet app the tablet connects fine, but the traffic in unsecured and NOT being Tunneled. However once I activate TetherNet app, all connected devices, stay connected and are Tunneled through the VPN.
I currently have about 4 or 5 devices connected to my VPN via mobile hotspot, and my check comes back secure on all of them.
Note: on the play store it says app is not working with cm13 and samsung devices.

VPN over Wifi?

Hi everyone,
I've tried just about everything I can think of, and no matter what I do, I can't get VPN to work over Wifi (on a P4000, which is the Canadian version of the Mogul/Titan). Does anyone have any experience/success with this?
I've tried searching the forums too, but couldn't locate a post on this topic. I can't be the only one wanting to use VPN over wifi?
Many thanks!
No I have not had any luck either. It also seems that you can not access the VPN using the phone as modem. It will allow you to securely connect, but when you try to link up with your computer, it gives an error message regarding an unidentifiable IP address. Sopmeone help!!!
I found this - http://securenet.niu.edu/vpnpptpwinmo5.shtml
It seems to be a weird workaround, definitely not convenient to connect. But, it doesn't actually connect for me. It starts the connection process, and I then get a username/password error or a "disconnected by the other party". So, it doesn't work.
Has anyone tried a 3rd party VPN client such as Bluefire VPN? http://www.bluefiresecurity.com/products/vpn/
It's quite expensive, though! 70$! We shouldn't have to pay for something that in theory, Windows Mobile already includes.
I didn't know that windows had it's own VPN installed in the OS so I actually have Bluefire installed. I had it on my Palm so it didn't cost my anything to switch the license over to my Titan. It works fine or me using Wi-Fi, EVDO, or 1x.
Telus blocks vpn access unless you have a VPN bundle, which costs 5$ i believe. I had to add it to mine. Other then that, i use openvpn talking to my router, works great

You have to pay to use VPN over Wifi? For cell-data, I'd understand, but I don't see how they can require us to pay to use our own WiFi networks.
I'm able to get the VPN to attempt to connect, however it always reports a username/password error.
I checked out openVPN but couldn't find a link for a Windows Mobile version. Can you post the link?
just type openvpn ppc into google, its the first result. As for vpn over wifi, i red it wrong, i was thinkin evdo
successful VPN over WiFi
You can successfully get on VPN through WiFi. GO to your VPN client click on connection entries drop menu at the top, then click modify, go to transport tab, and click to check the box enable trasport tunneling. Once you do this save it and you should be able to access it. I was successful.

Information regarding blocked ports on AT&Ts US data network

Hello,
Was wondering if anyone is aware of what exactly AT&T's policies are regarding their data network.
I am having a problem using Remote Desktop on my Tilt to access a remote PC.
By default Remote Desktop/Terminal services uses port 3389.
I have a machine configured to use an alternate port.
I can use remote desktop without a problem on the data connection when connecting to servers using 3390, but not when using my alternate port.
I don't have any problems connecting to either when using my Wi-Fi connection on my home network.
It appears that AT&T is blocking this port.
Perhaps they are blocking most ports and only allowing those used for standard services?
I don't find this acceptable and will probably call them about this, but I don't know if there is anything that they can or will do. I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this.
thanks.
so you are saying you found a way to tether with tethering being on your plan?

This has nothing to do with tethering.
I am using Remote Desktop Mobile on my Tilt to attempt to access a Terminal Server running on a port other than 3389.
Over Wi-fi I have no problem, under MEdia Net I cannot connect.
If I try to connect to a terminal server over port 3390, I have no issues.

[Q] Connecting a ps3 to the internet through HTC Hero

I'm trying to connect my ps3 to the internet using my phones internet. I have a rooted Hero using wireless tether to my pc. I enabled internet sharing on that connection and hooked up an ethernet cat-6 from my ps3 to pc. My ps3 keeps timing out trying to optain an IP address. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the ps3 to share a mobile internet connection?
Edit: Manually entered IP address and it now successfully obtains, but I get a DNS Error. I've tried a few open source numbers, none of which seem to work.
Why don't you just Wi-Fi tether? Program like wifi barnicale tether
It works from my N1 to ps3 slim
I tried that first. My ps3 wouldn't pick up the network when it would scan. I read that ps3's can't pick up ad-hoc networks. Maybe the new slims have that added feature though?
Make sure you are using one of the latest versions of wifi tether (.09 or .10). I think they now are a true router rather than a ad hoc connection

So I also have an HTC hero and what I'm wondering is if I can completely bypass using a pc/laptop and go directly from phone to console using a tether app ?

Connect to WiFi Network but keep on using Mobile Data Network

I tried to search but couldn't find definitive answer. My issue is opposite to general trend to switch off mobile and use wifi only.
I have apple TV without any internet connection (i.e. no modem connected to it) which I use to steam video/audio and it acts as an AP. I use Twonky on G-Tab (P1000) and it requires wifi for it to work. OK, fine. It does work on wifi and steams to Apple TV no issues, but as long as I am connected to wifi network, I can't use internet on my Tab (as I quoted above, my this Apple TV AP wireless network is without any internet connection, so I can't have net over it unless I buy a wired ADSL modem along with data plan and then connect it ti Apple TV). I have a reasonable mobile data plan on Tab's SIM and it works all time, except when I connect to any wireless network. Here's the catch, dumb Samsung thought that all and each wirless network always has internet connection or if there is a wireless network, it must have had internet connection! But anyway, this annoying behaviour prevents me from accessing net over mobile data plan as long as I am connected to any wifi network, be it has internet or not.
I tried and serached and also explored setting on my rooted tab, but no luck?
Any thing am I missing?
i have asked the same question here lla while back. its not possible to enable both wifi and mobile data at the same time

It's not so much dumb Samsung, as just the way Android works.
The following link details how this can be achieved, but only by modifying AOSP source and recompiling Android from scratch.

Can't you do it the other way around by enabling a mobile hotspot to your Tab, and connecting your Apple TV to this instead?
Regards,
Dave
Yes, that would be the final option to use tab as MobileAP which would be a forced one, not a choice.

[Q] wifi-in wifi-out (sharing wifi on wifi)

Hi all,
I know the thread's title may sound ridiculous, but it's really not.
I'm looking for a way to share my mobile wifi connection (I'm currently using the latest HTC one device) via wifi.
Meaning, I'm connected to a wifi network from my Android device, and I want to share this connection with other laptop/pad/mobile devices via wifi.
So my device acts both as wifi client to a hot-spot infra, and also like a hotspot infra for other devices.
In the past, I did it successfully using my iphone and MyWi app.
I've spent quite some time goggling for a solution, but non of the threads/articles I've read really address this problem, as most of them refer to sharing the mobile data connection rather than the wifi connection.
this is the closest thread I've found (from 2010) and it refers to wifi sharing via USB and not wifi.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1276723
the reason I'm looking for such a way is that I have a iPass certificate on my mobile, which enables me to connect freely to iPass wifi hotspots around the world (popular at airports for example) and I want to use this connection with my laptop or my friends mobile devices.
can anyone shed some light on this subject?
Provided that your phone and your laptop are connected to the same WiFi network, ( no internet access to laptop due to VPN or other reasons) you can use a proxy server (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.proxyserver&hl=en) on android to use Internet on your laptop.

Hi, indeed it is usefull if you are sharing LAN and a lo you need is HTTP access. But if this is not the case.. then you are back to square one..

Some third party tethering app may be able to do it, but the native one will turn off WiFi before it enables WiFi Hotspot. I think it's a hardware limitation. You can use USB tethering and Bluetooth tethering with a WiFi connection.
