I'm trying to connect my ps3 to the internet using my phones internet. I have a rooted Hero using wireless tether to my pc. I enabled internet sharing on that connection and hooked up an ethernet cat-6 from my ps3 to pc. My ps3 keeps timing out trying to optain an IP address. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the ps3 to share a mobile internet connection?
Edit: Manually entered IP address and it now successfully obtains, but I get a DNS Error. I've tried a few open source numbers, none of which seem to work.
Why don't you just Wi-Fi tether? Program like wifi barnicale tether
It works from my N1 to ps3 slim
I tried that first. My ps3 wouldn't pick up the network when it would scan. I read that ps3's can't pick up ad-hoc networks. Maybe the new slims have that added feature though?
Make sure you are using one of the latest versions of wifi tether (.09 or .10). I think they now are a true router rather than a ad hoc connection

So I also have an HTC hero and what I'm wondering is if I can completely bypass using a pc/laptop and go directly from phone to console using a tether app ?

Ok so I spent a few hours messing around last night, and I found a way to tether to my wii. It's probably no good for playing online. I needed to update my homebrew and this worked great for that.
You will need two routers, one of them capable of running dd-wrt. Set the dd-wrt router for client-bridge mode in the wireless tab. In basic setup (in the setup tab), the gateway should be set to the IP of your phone, and the channel and SSID should be set to match your phone. Give the router an IP address that is high in the range set on your tether app. Under setup>advanced routing make sure it is set to router and not gateway. Now with your phone broadcasting, go to the status tab, and the wireless sub-tab. Scroll to the bottom, and click site survey. Your tethered network should show up. Click join. Unfortunately you have to do this every time, as dd-wrt doesn't automatically connect to ad-hoc networks.
Now set up your second router the way you like. Run a patch cable from LAN on the first router to WAN on the second. After it connects, you should have a fully functioning infrastructure network through your tethered connection.
If you don't know about dd-wrt, all the info is online. Read the wiki carefully as you can potentially brick your router if you flash a version that your router can't handle. I'm not responsible if you do this!
I don't know if tomato is capable of client-bridge mode, but you could probably use it instead of dd-wrt if you prefer.
Good luck!

Very informative!!
I was thinking about this the other day for my PS3. My idea was that couldn't you use your computer as an internet gateway and run a patch cable (Not sure if it'd be a crossover or not) from your computer to a router (into the "Internet" port) and run another patch cable from the router into the PS3?
I didn't bother to try it, but it was an interesting thought considering the only internet connection I have where I live currently is through my phone. The connection does just fine to run Vent+WoW, though.
edit: Maybe it'd work with a switch instead of a router? 'nother thought.
You should be able yo do that, but you wouldn't need a switch or a router, just plug straight in if you use a crossover cable. I think you would need a router if you use patch cables.
The wii doesn't have an Ethernet port so I haven't tried it that way.. I bet its a pain to set up internet sharing in windows though

Or switch

It's real easy to share your internet from wifi tether through your computer's ethernet port. and for the wii, you only need a usb to ethernet adapter to use ethernet. (in windows) just enable share connection for your ethernet connection. Plug in. done.

I am interested in taking the internet connection from a desktop computer through USB on my phone and then using the phones wireless to share the connection to my laptop.
At my work the only way to connect to the network is if they allow your specific computer onto the network. I have been getting around this by using a mac that is on the network and setting up an ad-hoc network. This had worked well but they are replacing the mac with a brand new Dell tomorrow! Ah!
Any ideas on how I can share that network? None of the windows machines in our office have a wireless card and due to whatever security I can't just plug in.
Please note I am not trying to tether.
Thank you for any help!

Well, I couldn't think of a way with the phone. But I did come up with this. http://www.staples.com/Netgear-WNCE2001-Ethernet-to-Wireless-Adapter/product_865869?cmArea=SEARCH
Connect your computer to a switch, connect this to said switch. Then switch to lan port. Then set up ad-hoc using this? Little pricy but meh?
there are many ways to do this, you could use CM7 for one, it has wifi tethering built in.
there is PDAnet that tethers through usb and wifi (i think)
also go to the threads for your phone and look around to see how other users have accomplished it themselves.
After searching and trying out several ways to connect my GT to my school's proxy authenticated wifi network I gave up. Then I thought about my ipod touch, registered my wifi mac address with the IT guys and voila it was so easy to configure proxy just my entering user name and password I I can surf.
Now why on earth did android neglect the proxy wifi I have no idea. Furthermore, the adhoc wifi does not also work OTB and will only work if rooted. Why?
I am beginning to regret purchasing android device.....
Hi, what is the specific problem-is it connecting ok to wireless but not authenticating to your web proxy server? apps like asproxy ( http://alsubang.github.com/ASProxy/index.html) should work, but haven't tried it myself....

I have tried asproxy and it did not work. And yes it connects to the usual hotspots like starbucks. I am also rooted so I am able to connect to adhoc from my nokia phone(joiku hotspot).
I also know some friends who have the 10.1 and the asus transformer and they also cannot connect to the schools proxy. A visit to the IT department confirmed that Android is not supported.
A lot of people in our community are already put off getting an android device because of this.
Hi all,
I know the thread's title may sound ridiculous, but it's really not.
I'm looking for a way to share my mobile wifi connection (I'm currently using the latest HTC one device) via wifi.
Meaning, I'm connected to a wifi network from my Android device, and I want to share this connection with other laptop/pad/mobile devices via wifi.
So my device acts both as wifi client to a hot-spot infra, and also like a hotspot infra for other devices.
In the past, I did it successfully using my iphone and MyWi app.
I've spent quite some time goggling for a solution, but non of the threads/articles I've read really address this problem, as most of them refer to sharing the mobile data connection rather than the wifi connection.
this is the closest thread I've found (from 2010) and it refers to wifi sharing via USB and not wifi.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1276723
the reason I'm looking for such a way is that I have a iPass certificate on my mobile, which enables me to connect freely to iPass wifi hotspots around the world (popular at airports for example) and I want to use this connection with my laptop or my friends mobile devices.
can anyone shed some light on this subject?
Provided that your phone and your laptop are connected to the same WiFi network, ( no internet access to laptop due to VPN or other reasons) you can use a proxy server (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.proxyserver&hl=en) on android to use Internet on your laptop.

Hi, indeed it is usefull if you are sharing LAN and a lo you need is HTTP access. But if this is not the case.. then you are back to square one..

Some third party tethering app may be able to do it, but the native one will turn off WiFi before it enables WiFi Hotspot. I think it's a hardware limitation. You can use USB tethering and Bluetooth tethering with a WiFi connection.
Ok so living in the Uk I use unblock US to watch US netflix.
I can change the dns settings on the wifi and access it ok but it doesn't work on the ethernet.
How can I change the Dns on the ethernet? Wi fi is rubbish on the Ouya.
Cheers

I don't think there is a ethernet manual settings within android since it's designed for mobile devices that don't usually have ethernet ports.
It would probably be either to bridge the Ouya to a PC and share the PC internet connection to get Neflix and what not working if you want to use ethernet
DNS
I havent tried it, but I came across it yesterday
in the advanced setting
-Ethernet
-Ethernet configuration
-dns
