Is true you have limitations with Exynos that you don't have with Snapdragon regarding editing source code?
Basically i need to buy a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and i want to know which version has less limits...
Personally I always buy the exynos ones for one their better optimized and more efficient. But that's my honest opinion. Someone could have a different opinion but that's what I feel. Only downside is no aosp roms usually.... that could be a big deal to some. Not to me I usually have a nexus phone too as I need two phones.

So the Exynos model can't have AOSP ROMs and Snapdragon one yes. For me is a big deal have this option on my phone.
I have a final fight in mind:

Don't expect AOSP rom on US Snapdragon model since bootloader is still locked which mean no custom rom at all.
And AOSP rom is not impossible on exynos but it tend to be too buggy to be used as daily driver. So touchwiz is still better than aosp most of the time on exynos.

You can install strongly debloated TouchWiz and it has no Samsung Apps and only some Google Apps that are required for system to run properly. I know that AOSP is for someone very important but why do you buy Samsung if you are going to use AOSP? Half of the gadgets or more are useless with AOSP. I must add that Touchwiz is running properly fast on S7 and I mean Contacts, Dialer, Settings because I change immidiately to Nova Launcher.
Buy Exynos. It is not locked, change ROM to modified Touchwiz, change launcher and you are going to be happy as a child
When using Samsung's Goodlock in combination with 3rd party 'stock-android' launcher (e.g. Nova or APEX) you're really close to AOSP, just missing some features but many other useful Touchwiz features will be held!

With the S7/S7E it's no secret that Samsung's own Exynos SOC is the more optimised and stable chipset. You get better raw performance on the Snapdragon, primarily due to the superior GPU, but you pay for that with heat and inferior battery life. Also, for apps that are optimised for multi-core SOCs, the Exynos is superior due to having double the amount. It's for this reason applications open faster for example.
The downside is that Exynos is very much close source, so stable AOSP/CM roms are very difficult to make. However, there are two reasons why this shouldn't lead you to avoid this particular SOC. Firstly, the Snapdragon variant has a locked bootloader so, as things stand, you couldn't flash a non-signed 100% stock rom anyway. And that isn't likely to change. And secondly, why pay a premium for a device like this then put a third party vanilla rom on it that will take away many of the features that made the device premium in the first place. One example, you would only need compare camera speed and quality between CM and stock on an S7/S7E to see what I mean. I know from experience with Samsung phone in the past that there will be a world of difference.

Thanks, things are more clear now. Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge VS Nexus 6P now. Afaik Nexus 6P it is thinked entirely by google and for this reason it is my decision for the moment. But if the things you said are valid even for the Snapdragon in the Nexus, is better to take the Galaxy...
I'd say the choice should be between the s7 edge vs one plus 3.
Seems both phones are at par for battery usage now.
And from observation the exy version seems better than snapdragon overall

The OnePlus 3 is a fantastic phone, if you're buying on a budget. As a direct competitor to the S7 Edge in particular if money is not a factor, it falls short for me. It has a 1080p screen for example, something that was in flagships 3 years ago. 4k on mobile devices of this size is OTT for me, but 2k is perfect. I have put my S7 Edge and Note 3 (1080p like the OnePlus 3) together and there is a discernible difference in terms of visual pixels. I'm surprised they have used old technology in this respect. Also the camera falls well short of the quality on the S7.
Don't have money problems in this period.

Hello everyone
Long story short, I decided to upgrade and went with an M9 (or three), and each one had a different problem. All of them suffered from light leaks, the last one stuck pixel too. The camera is poor, so I am weighing my options. Coming from a G3, my obvious choice would be a G4 but...BUT !
I have managed to find the Exynos variant of the Note 4 for about 378 pounds, brand new and sealed. My question is (for current users) - would you consider it future proof? Is it still snappy, good, and a good investement for another year or so? Would you recommend it over the G4?
Many thanks
Well, I was in the same boat as you: Wanted to upgrade from my G3 because I had the 2GB variant, it was a lagfest with launcher redraws and apps closing all the time. AOSP had good performance but also had bugs and the camera sucked.
So I found the Exynos Note 4 for a good prince in my area and decided to take the plunge even though I never owned a samsung phone before, and bought it based on the interest I had on the Note II back then and some superficial reviews I've had read about it.
I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever, the Note 4 definitely feels like an upgrade from the G3. It's faster, the screen has better colors and contrast, better visibility in the sun, and touchwiz came a long way from the old days where it was regarded as one of the worst manufacturer skins to android. The note 4 has many features that amazed me, including the best one-hand mode implementation so far.
I say go with it, you won't be disappointed.

If you have a choice NEVER go for exynos ESPECIALLY if you want to root/flash roms later on. If you are fine with stock rom then it doesn't matter which you go for. Just know that stock is a little laggy no matter which variant you go for.
I hated the lag and finally installed CM and am not looking back, you can get SPEN functionality on AOSP roms now too so not really an issue. CM FLIES on note 4, so fast!!!!

Maybe I should've worded my post differently. The snapdragon isn't available in my area, so there was no option of choosing variants. Exynos has no aosp, but SimplRom is pretty fast and yet has all the built in spen functionality.

Welcome to the family my brothers
I have the Exynos version & it's great
I recently got a Note 4 N910C, which is the Exynos model for the EU and I can honestly say that I love it.
I seek a kind advice, I currently have a 2GB G3 and i am looking to upgrade (as i wont have an opportunity to do that in future) Been deciding between an iphone 6plus and note 4, or basically any other big phone. So should i go for a note 4 or a different device? My main concern is if the note will be a solid choise for about 2 years or so.

Get the exynos, the CPU will be cooler therefore you will have no underclock due to high temps like 4 core snapdragon. Also a dev here (sorry i dont remember his name) is working on CM for our phone with exynos chip. But i really don't feel like i need to change the stock samsung rom so bad, some guys here are drowning on a teaspoon of water. Note 4 is one of the best phones atm, go for it.

snapdargon 810 i crap !
Last few years I had Nexus 4, and Nexus 5, absolutely loved them.. This year I switched from Nexus 5 to galaxy S6 and I love it too except that software is pretty ****e..
Touchwiz is slow and laggy, memory managment is sh*t, 0 dev support, 0 aosp roms, slow updates...
On the other hand, nexus is completely different story, pure stock android, fast and fluid, 0 memory issues, amazing dev support, fast updates..
But the thing thats holding me atm is that i will kinda downgrade cpu from exynos beast CPU to snapdragon 810.. also display is gorgeous on s6 and camera is amazing..
Help me :/ what should I do
I am selling my S6 once my pre order arrives in November.
While I do like the camera, battery is so so, root is out the door with the latest versions of Android, TW absolutely sucks and I can't stand the memory management.

I really think you answered your own question...It's nice that N6P comes with Android M...So it would be the "first" to have the official M build. But in the grand scheme of things, the N6P are just lacking in too many features and the SD810 chipset is very questionable.
I'd suggest letting others be the guinea pigs, wait for some reviews, then make a much more inform decision.

Yeah exynos CPU is good but TW ruins it, also display quality is not big of a difference :C
As far as pixel ratio sure.. But the S6 is super amoled. And if you don't lie TW you can check the S6 forum to see if there's a M Rom available.
I thought I'd post a thread for my fellow S6 users planning to move to the N5X.
I had the S6 with me since the launch day itself. I was hoping that due the popularity of the S lineup there could be CM support just like S3 had.
After almost 9 months of waiting I finally gave up.
Yes there is CM for S6 but it is no where near stability. Without a maintainer there wont be any. Samsung will never release sources for exynos.
These facts however cold they maybe are straight forward facts. The CM source we have has a lot of work to be done, and I am not talking about 2 or 3 lines of code. Hals need to be written from scratch and tested. I believe in open source mindset. If I have paid almost 800 usd for a piece of hardware I should have the right to put whatever software I want.
So finally I moved to the 5X.
1) The build does not feel cheap, its lighter than the s6 yet sturdy and does not feel fragile.
2) The power button is not as tactile as the one on the S6.
3) Display is really good. 1080 is enough and I have to try really hard to see the difference between fhd and qhd. This is my first IPS LCD phone all others have been amoleds and I am pleased to say that the display on N5X is really subtle on the eyes.
4) Camera is very good, almost close to the s6. The cam app is not that great but I am using manual camera so it dont matter.
5) BATTERY LIFE! N5X only loses 1% charge over night. Doze is just amazing. I am almost getting 6 to 6.5 hrs of SOT over a 1.5 to 2 days of usage. I'm pretty sure I can push it to 8hrs of SOT.
6) Fingerprint scanner is faster than the S6. and the positioning is more natural.
7) The front speaker is really good. I can hold the phone without worrying about blocking the speaker.
8) Fast charging is pretty much the same as S6.
9) Earpiece quality and clarity are 2x better than the one on S6 imo.
10) The phone does not throttle or heat up even on heavy use. SD 808 is just working fine.
So if you are planning to move on to 5X or 6P, I would say go for it.
P.S. I am not here to badmouth our beloved S6. I love the phone, but the software just doesn't live up. Stock android is 100% better than touchwiz when user experience is concerned.
Are your comparisons based on the s6 on lollipop or marshmallow? Cos a lot of the things have improved a hell of a lot on marshmallow for s6 and that's just beta and not final version. The 6p yes, 5x nahh
No front physical home button, no care.
I had a N4 and N7 (2012 & 2013). Meh.
Wider, taller and thicker. The 2 extra mm in width is especially noticeable in the hand--at least it was when I held it. The S6 is pretty much the limit for me in terms of size. But the worst thing about the NX5 is onboard memory. 32g max. That is the ultimate deal breaker. I keep a lot of music on my phone and like to store locally whatever movies I buy from the Play store or videos I watch from Amazon Prime so I don't need a connection to watch. Plus, it drains far less battery than streaming. A 10-episode series on Prime is like 11g by itself. Come on, get with the times and at least provide the option of 64g model.

That makes no business sense. Probably fewer than a few percent of users want to flash custom ROMs, and encouraging them to do so by releasing full sources only increases costly warranty claims. They've totally snubbed the development community, so it's time for us to either be content with TW or move on, IMO.

Nexus 5x is a inferior product compared to the s6...even the nexus 6p is not on par with the s6...the only one which is going to be worth getting in my opinion is the upcoming s7..and im going to get the s7 exynos variant not the snapdragon one.. simply because it will be faster.

I never said that S6 was a slow phone. It's about what's opensource and what's not. Touchwiz on the S6 is the best I've seen on a samsung device. But the way samsung heavily modifies aosp and does not tell us is very unfair. Look at sony, they got their custom timescape UI, but still they support AOSP and provide the right sources.

by 3-4 months google will announce Android N release. Then there will be another reason to wait for samsung to release some source.
If you want development, the S6 shouldn't even be in contention. We buy the S6 for premium build and the built in tech like fprint scanner, IR Blaster, Heart Rate Monitor and crazy gorgeous screen.
Even with that ****ty CM, half the tech built in will not work properly so why buy the S6 hoping for CM?

The funny thing is... You sent this from an Iphone.
To the OP, any issues with the reported lag on the 5x? I'm looking elsewhere from my s6 because even on that "premium" phone, I get lag opening hangouts and even at times typing. I never had any problems on my previous original nexus 5.
I'm really stuck in this same move myself. I bought a s6 when my nexus 5died because it was the best hardware around. Little did I know that the monster of a processor would be gimped by poor ram management. I bought a 5x during the holidays and I really enjoy the stock Android and solid battery life.
Then they came out with the marshmallow beta and fixed most of my reservations - ran management, keyboard killing, fingerprint sensor speed, and standby drain. The mm build is competitive in enjoyment, at least until the next nexus comes out.

I was always a dual user of both iOS and Android, but when the iPhone 6 came out, I decided to opt for the iPhone 6 Plus and use it primarily and gave my HTC M8 to my mother. I must say I had an amazing experience with HTC, using both the M7 and M8 consecutively. Recently I've been experiencing issues with the iPhone and the 6S does not really interest me, so I was thinking of going back to Android. The options I am looking at are the S7 Edge and HTC 10.
Since I've had a great experience with HTC, I thought I would go for the 10 but I read a lot of mixed reviews about it and from the looks department, it looks really similar to my M8 so it won't feel much different, and I believe HTC Sense has not been overhauled recently so it's going to feel almost exactly the same. I had horrible experiences with both the Galaxy S3 and S5, the latter being the WORST device I've ever used in my life (and I've used so many), which is why I am scared about going for the S7 Edge.
My experience with the S5 started well, but gradually kept getting worse and worse until it was time to give it up - it had the Exynos (not sure of the spelling) processor, so perhaps that is why? But I've always found TouchWiz to be quite laggy compared to stock Android, for example. I have read good reviews about the S7 Edge, however, and I have a couple of questions before going ahead and buying it:
1) How is TouchWiz nowadays? Is it smooth and snappy or would I need install custom ROMs and such? I really love custom ROMs and changing it up every now and then so I won't have problems with that.
2) Is there a noticeable difference between the Snapdragon and the Exynos? On the S5, the latter was NOT supported by developers at all, so it is the same case here or not?
3) Samsung seems to have many variants of the S7, but to my understanding there are two S7 Edge variants, one with a dual-sim (DUOS) and one with just one, so is that true? And if so, are they both supported by developers or just one of them?
4) How is your overall experience with the device so far? And is the S8 possibly coming out soon? I wouldn't mind waiting if it's going to be released very soon.
Thank you for your time.
p.s. I recently purchased a Moto 360 2nd gen smart watch which I absolutely watch and is one of the main reasons I want an Android device because its iOS support is horrendous; is the S7 Edge compatible with the Moto 360 fine? Or is the dependability solely relying on the Android Wear app itself rather than the actual device?
Rooting and developer support seem to crop up frequently in your post.
For that reason the Exynox version is probably more of interest.
However, I would suggest another option if you really feel that strongly about playing around with rom's and that is the Oneplus3. It has all the support you need.
Personally, the worst thing I can say about the Edge is that the alarm doesn't go quiet enough ... . I also use the Op3 though I have not rooted, it works just fine as is (as does the S7E).
Both are plenty fast enough for any software currently available. - I think half the problems some seem to have with the S7(E) seems to originate with the need to customize every little bit.
TouchWhiz is good (imho) and even the browser is optimized and blazingly fast. At the end of the day it comes down to UI preference. Op's UI is much closer to stock Android and I like that too.
When it comes to form factor and pride of ownership, there is only one winner though and I doubt many could argue with that one.
1) Honestly I can't think of a single bad thing about the TouchWiz on the S7 Edge. Works just fine, My only serious complain is that dark themes don't theme some parts of the overall UI (such as the battery graph, and set alarms) and therefore are left white and looks... unfinished. In terms of performance no issues whatsoever.
2) There is difference yes, the Exynos being the better option. People have reported better user experience, as well as better battery life on the Exynos version. However don't expect much development for the version with Samsung's cpu.
4) The S7 is a few months old, way too early to talk about S8. It is a really good phone, probably the best I've had and I've had my fair and square experience with smartphones. The battery life for me alone is better than anything I've tried, maybe only for the 6S Plus. Overall 4+ hours SoT on heavy day.
The HTC is a good phone, but I personally believe the S7 edge is the better option here. The M10 is not worth the askes price.

Thank you for your replies, gentleman. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply but I got caught up in other things and for some reason I did not receive email notifications of your replies even though I have subscribed to the thread.
I believe I'm going for the S7 Edge today since I'm off work. I would like to know how to tell between a Snapdragon or Exynos processor? Is it perhaps written on the box itself?
And your posts seem to be conflicting since drummerman says the Exynos processor is better for development while derWolf says otherwise. Which one is it? Did I misunderstand your posts, perhaps?
Thank you!

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge with the Exynos processor is the best in my opinion. The Galaxy S7 with the Exynos processor is the SM-G930F and the S7 Edge is the SM-G935F. The "F" is the designation for the Global model with an unlocked bootloader and can easily be rooted with CF Autoroot and Odin. TWRP is available for both variants of the S7 as well.
If you can open the box at the store and power up the device, go to Settings - About Device
You will see the model number.

Which variant is best for custom roms(both tw and non tw roms), easy rooting and have unlocked bootloader?
Exynos looks like a better option. its optimised for battery and every seems much easier on exynos, IMO...
Exynoss is much better but if you are buying a phone in 2019 note 4 probably shouldn't be your top pick unless you really really want some of the features that are now gone from other phones like removable battery, ir blaster etc.

Exynos of course is best option.
I wouldn't recommend you note 4 any more since there are many good phones in market in low budget price.

I know people wouldn't recommend it anymore. But I am not a fan of the direction smartphones are going today. It started getting worse when non removable battery are implemented and now they are slowly removing more features like headphone jack and some companies actually removed every single port. The whole thing is just too retarded for me. If I had to go to flipphones, I seriously would. lol
Why do I need a really powerful phone when all I do is just call and text and browse? My gaming laptop running Androidx86 can handle all Android games.
Exynos Note 4 seems to be ideal for me. 64bit soc, 2k screen, 5.7 screen, removable battery and a stylus. Thanks for letting me decided guys.
Exymos isnt true 64bit.
SD has a more varied amount of roms for it.
Exynos is the better phone but if you want anything above android 7 rom then go SD
I have bought like 5 note 4s ever since 2014 my first one flagship at that time was N910C(Exynos) used that phone for a year also had Red Velvet N910S(exynos) what a beauty and thn N910F and now another N910C
With that being said to answer your question if you want lineage go for SD if you prefer TouchWiz go for Exynos I have noticed it with every Sammy's offering i have used uptil S8+ touchwiz is more optimized for exynos SD device do operate warmer thn touchwiz and battery endurance is lower but on the other hand lineage on Exynos is often not stable
I have tried couple of TW roms found stock the smoothest if you plan to stay stock exynos is best
Always exynos. Because its made by samsung and its better optimized than snapdragon.
