Not sure what to call the occasional popups / toasts / alerts / whatever that fade in / fade out as gray ovals with white text just above the home button at the bottom of the screen, but whatever you call them, they've recently started to appear in Japanese or Chinese (they're Chinese characters). I have confirmed the System Language is still set to English in settings.
I used Google Translate to try to translate some Chinese text using the camera recently. Could I have changed a setting in Translate that can cause system messages like these to be automatically translated? (Hmm. I just turned on "Tap to translate", and that caused one of these popups to appear that said, in English, "Tap to translate enabled". That's the first popup I've seen in the last couple of days that's been in English.)
This is on a stock Verizon S7 Edge.
(BTW, what's the proper name for these popups?)
Popups were caused by ES File Explorer (as identified in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-...tification-t3415622/post67687663#post67687663). ES File Explorer uninstalled and problem resolved.

I have a question regarding the user menu of individual applications. Specifically, it is a CZ GiboSMS software (do you even WinRar), where after you click the standard button "options" menu go displayed in WM6 not offer TF3D. This can be done somehow? Perhaps I well described. ROM original HTC. Image problem here

Apology for the English, I used google translator
wrinte in own language
don't understand. please write in CZ and will seek a solution
He can't see TF3D finger friendly pop up menu in GiboSMS app (sometimes in winRar). He only can see classical windows pop up menu with smaller layout (2nd screenshot). Everything works well in other apps.

No one, no solution?
Ok, by now you probably know HTC's nice text selection tool. To use it, write some words in a HTC application (like the text message composer), then tap-and-hold somewhere in the text. You get one handle to move around, or two if you want to select a precise part.
But there's more. Change "HKLM/Software/HTC/TextSelection/EnableMagnifier" from 0 to 1. Now activate the text selection tool again as described above and try moving the single handle around...
Nice catch. Can be helpful in tight selections. I've been looking through the reg. So much stuff disabled... Why does HTC do this? They could've placed it as an option on SMS menu...
Thanks. Added to tips thread.
Maybe they disable it so we at XDA have something to do until HSPL is released
Some other simple but cool things I discovered:
* You can use the album app to crop pictures. Just pinch-to-zoom until the part you want fills the screen, then tap the screen, tap the icon on the bottom right and choose the second option from the menu. In Dutch it's called 'Schermafbeelding opslaan'. It will save a cropped copy of your pic.
* Here's a registry entry I found: "HKLM/Software/HTC/Manila/InternetPush/EnablePushInternet". It's set to 0 by default. I'm not really interested in push internet, so I haven't experimented with this, but it seems you can enable it if you want.
* Sometimes touch scrolling gets in the way of selecting text. If you want to select text, the solution depends on the context, but to start you just tap-and-hold anywhere:
-- In Opera, you can switch text selection on/off in the context menu;
-- In some apps (like while reading an e-mail message) you get a pop-up menu where the first option is 'make selection' ('selectie maken' on my Dutch device);
-- In Word, just before the pop-up menu appears, you see this: '[T]'. As soon as it appears, move your finger and you'll be able to select text!
* If you like the Footprints app but prefer full size pictures to those square 'polaroids', there's an option to save a full sized copy whenever you create a 'Footprint' (Footprints tab -> Menu -> Settings).
* The 'me' entry in the People app stores your 'owner' info. I know this is widely known by now, partly because I've been posting it everywhere, but I still see so many people complaining they can't register their applications (Resco stuff, SKtools)... because the can't find the old owner info icon. I have registered both Resco Explorer and SKtools perfectly fine without ever bringing the owner info icon back.
I haven't ever been able to get the Text Selection sliders to work on a custom rom even after setting the registry value to 1.
This is an awesome feature and I can't understand why it doesn't work.

you know it only works in text messaging, right? (well, some other htc apps too, apparently, but i couldn't name another one i've seen it in)
Yes of course... I'm aware that it only works in the realm of Sense specifically mail and text. I can do the standard selection thing but I just can't seem to get the sliders.
Any ideas?
hmm, well a common mistake I've come across a few times is people not pressing select the first time.
firstly go type some text into a new text message. (not sure where the idea it works in email came from, certainly doesn't on mine.)
ok, press and hold should bring up a cursor and the words "select|select all.
use the single sljder to set the start(or end, whichever) press 'select' nd now a second slider should join the first, enabling you to select.
Thanks for the responses guys, but as it turned out, I didn't realise that Energy ROMs are stripped of the HTC Messaging Module and that seems to be the only place where this 'feature' works.
It's a shame that's it's not available system-wide considering how easy it makes life.
I installed the HTC Messaging Client and voila, it was it there! but that excitement was short lived considering how bad HTC's messaging client is.
hah couldn't agree more. with the magnifier too its great ,, just never gets used.
As an AT&T user, I bought an unlocked Samsung Omnia II (GT-I8000) from eBay but it is Arabic which I don't know at all.
Can you please tell me how I can change the language to English?
Actually, I found this from internet and followed the steps but the language would not changed to English.
1. Power up the phone (of course)
2. Once the main screen has appeared press the "cube" button.
3. Select the blue and silver cog icon (Settings) at bottom right of screen
4. Select the General Settings Icon, third option down (displayed as a
puzzle and cog icon)
5. Scroll down to the last but one option. (Samsung TouchWiz UI is the
final option).
6. Three Arabic options are displayed. Select the middle option (English).
7. Select the Arabic option at the bottom left of screen (if the
following message doesn't appear then I got it mixed up and it should
have been the right).
8. You should get an English message asking if you are sure you want
to change the setting (You know you do!).
9. Phone reboots and bingo it should be English.
I'm running Fattire's ICS, been running it for months and months now without problems. Today, Swiftkey updated itself and now I get this message non-stop about an Asian app having stopped. I'm pretty sure it's one of the Asian language apps because there are several shown in the Settings > Language & Input control panel. I uninstalled SwiftKey and rebooted, but that didn't fix the problem.
When I am in the Language & Input settings menu, I have the following:
- Android Keyboard (Checked and grayed out)
- Japanese IME (Checked and grayed out)
- [Asian characters I can't type here] (Checked and grayed out)
How do I fix this?! Can I use Root Explorer to remove whatever apk is having the issue? I don't need any asian languages, can I remove them with Root Explorer?

It is best to just disable them in settings. Go to settings, apps, all, and look for them. One has the Asian characters and I don't remember the other one. Just open in settings and chose disable. You can always re-enable them later if you want.
Edit: the second Japanese app is OpenWnn.

Win 8:
*How do i turn off the feature that makes windows maximize when they are dropped close to the top of the screen?
*How do i get my language settings straight? I'm swedish but I prefer system language english. Naturally i want swedish keyboard for the special characters, so i have set it to system english and keyb swedish. Whenever I type my spelling gets corrected to english.
*I cant find settings in email app. I want all mails to show, not only last 30 days.
*How do i sync my google contacts mail adresses to win 8 mail app?
Device specific:
*After having closed the lid a couple of times the multi gestures won't work. Like two finger scroll, pinch and swipe. Anyone know a solution?
Device is ASUS ultrabook s400c

2) you can turn off auto correction and change keyboards on the fly, but first you need to set them up in control panel >region and language settings.
3)press ctrl + C on keyboard when in main app, go accounts, select account, you will then find settings from when to download items.
The system dictionary will be set to the system language normally. I am not sure you can change that.
For mail. Hold the windows key + C to open the charms bar (or move mouse to top right corner) while in the mail app. Click settings, you can add and remove accounts there and change the syncing options. Do the same in the people app to sync contacts.
For the first point, if you mean the maximizing behavior on the desktop, that's called Aero Snap (and it's not new; it was in Win7 since beta). I actually find it really useful, to the point that it drives me nots trying to use an OS without it now; try dragging a window to the side of the screen and you get it to fill one half of the screen, which is extremely handy. With that said, if you really want to, a brief search online should yield instructions for turning it off.
