Nexus 6P screen no responsive, is it hardware or software? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, so a few months ago I dropped my phone and the screen cracked, and I had a local repair place replace the screen for me. Well, the other day, my screen decided to no longer respond to touch but the phone is working fine besides that. (Oddly, when I first turn the phone off and back on, the screen will respond for a few minutes before no longer working.) I took the phone in the place that repaired the screen (they have a lifetime warranty) and they said that they put a new screen on and it still didn't work, so it wasn't the screen and suggested that it was a software issue. I factory reset my phone, and still have the same issue. A few questions:
1. Are they lying?
2. If not, if it's another piece of hardware, will Google warranty the phone since it's within a year, even though the screen has been replaced?
3. I've searched online to see if anyone else has had this problem, and nothing seems to be related to hardware, is it possible that it's software and if so, how do I fix it?
Thanks!

I would go to dev options and enable pointer location, and see if the information is what it should be.
Could be a grounding issue, the n5x has this issue while charging, the fingerprint required more pressure too.
Backup your ROM and flash Google's image,

How would I do that without being able to use the screen? The screen does not work at all.

Yes, I currently work for a cellular services company and it's the one that we constantly recommend because we hear good reviews from customers about them.
Thanks for your help so far!

Mmmm. Tricky perhaps. A hard reset will either cure or leave you stuck. If you hard reset and the screen is indeed dead (touch wise) then you'll never get past the alignment stage. If the touch issue is software related then you would be sorted with the hard reset.
A gamble I think!!
However you are stuck at the moment so in a sense you have nothing to lose. If it ends up being useless then you are faced with a warranty (hopefully) repair otherwise some DIY though it's not entirely obvious what has broken/come loose - possibly just a ribbon connector.

Maybe the ribbon cable came loose on the LCD side?

Yeah i think its that as well, i hard reseted it a few times with no effect, in the begining of the day, it could still reconise the screen taps around 2/3 times before it totally went dead.
Are there any tutorials on how to open it up to check the ribbon?
Thanks.
This maybe the hardware problem with the mainboard itself. I read about this on here a few times, most people had the get their phones exchange....

Yes, I am equally unsure that this is just a simple loose connector. It may be, but it appears to be fine for a short while and only then goes off.
Like you myztikal47, I suggest going for warranty replacement if at all possible. Only if you have no warranty shuld you attempt a repair yourself - this is a notoriously ellusive fix and indeed I would say there is no 100% works for all answer. Certainly do not assume it's the screen - most probably it isn't and you'll waste your money.
There are dismantling links in this forum - but you'll find them on my small Hermes site http://michael-channon.spaces.live.com- go to the loose keyboard section and you'll see the links.

HELP> Flashed Desire Rom, now screen wont light up

I have a serious problem. I noticed a bug in the Desire alphas where sometimes when the backlight went off during a call it would not come back on when the i took the phone away from my face. It always came back on eventually.
Ok now yesterday I flash alpha 8 and it worked fine. Now all of a sudden I reboot my phone bc the battery dies and the backlight won't come on at all! I know the phone is on because the haptic feedback and cap buttons are on and if I leave it on I can tell it's getting notifications.
How am I supposed to fix this?! I can't even see anything to get into recovery! My phone is unusable.
Find out every step to do a backup in recovery... see if that works

Load into bootloader
Press power button once and wait about 20 seconds
press volume down once then hit power button once
Wait about a minute and move the trackball down slowly 3 time and press it
Scroll it down once and press it four times

Unless your screen is broken you can always boot into recovery.
Take out the battery, then put it back in.
Hold the trackball down as you power on, this will boot you into fast boot.
Select bootloader, then select recovery. and bam your in recovery and can reflash.
I can get my phone into recovery. When I adb in i can push the phone into recovery, then when i hit adb devices it shows my phone and says recovery.
the problem is the backlight is not on even when i am in recovery. i would say the screen broke, but it seemed like a software problem, because it was just slow to come back on. It still always came back on. then I left it in my car chargine and it never came on again. The phone seems to be working fine though.
Kind of off topic, but did your call screen do this before flashing to Desire at all? Did you recently install a screen protector? I had problems with the PhantomSkinz screen protector making the proximity sensor less sensitive and behaved exactly how you're describing...as soon as I took it off it started working again. I'm now using a dcmugen88 screen protector and it works great.
interesting. i have one of those bodyglove or whatever protectors. best buy glued it onto my lcd. i suppose it could have started around that time. but would the proximity sensor still be deactivating the lcd even when its booting up or in recovery?
Oh, I must have overlooked that. The screen protector wouldn't cause any issues on startup or in recovery... guess it must be the rom then.
well, figured it out.
warning to n1 users: watch that lcd screen under the glass. its not nearly as sturdy as the glass cover.
the lcd/digitizer screen under my glass got cracked and stopped working. no drop, no warning, no funny colors. htc does not cover this in the warranty no matter how good the actual phones condition is.
i almost didnt get another n1, a phone thats inherantly weak (i found dozens of similar reports over the web) is not exactly a good case for a system with no insurance, no store to walk into, and very unhelpful support. they try to be very nice, but the rep i talked to couldnt even tell me whats covered and not. he just said let us charge 500 bucks to your card and we will ship a replacement, then decide if we think you have to buy it once we get your old phone. i demanded to talk to someone who did know. his manager denied hearing about lcd screen problems... after the original rep said he and htc knew this was a common problem. google didnt even return my email when i first contacted them saying my backlight was broken.
so again, be careful and get a good case.

[Q] [DZ] Dead Touch Screen Area - what could be the problem?

Hi!
I recently noticed that an area of my HTC Desire Z's Touch Screen is dead. It might be related to me dropping the phone accidently about 1 meter on the ground, but I didn't immediately notice the effect.
You can find a video of my symptoms here:
youtube.com/watch?v=bHB41nXtwns
(Sorry, I can't use a direct link since this is my first post here)
Which part of the phone could be defect, according to the symptoms? The digitizer? Even more? Are there maybe any workarounds I could try to get it working again?
What I tried so far is turning the phone off, removing the battery, turning it back on (no difference). Also, I tried with and without a charger connected and with and without touching the phone's body to establish a common ground level (so not the usual touch screen problems here).
Thanks in advance!
If there's a screen protector on, try removing it and see if it behaves differently.

There is no screen protector on it. The device is unmodified with regards to hardware / accesoires.
It could be a loose ribbon cable, tear down the phone and reattach the cable that goes to the screen, or call in a warranty.

I advice not to do this... first call your mobile carrier. Tell them about your issue, try to get it replace if possible. Tear downs should only be done if that's the last option you have...
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
just get a replacement and dont tell them what happened
I didn't buy the phone from a carrier but from amazon.co.uk. I wanted to avoid using warranty because it's a lot of trouble (phone needs to be sent to the UK, i need to S-ON and restore the original ROM/recovery firmware first, phone will probably be away for some weeks).
As it's only a minor issue, I would try to repair it myself (I'm confident that I can do that). What I am looking for is just a hint with which I can confirm that it's just the digitizer so I don't order the wrong replacement part and have to open/close the phone several times.

I'd recommend against that, as its still under warranty. Its too easy to mess something up when you do-it-yourself, and you would void the warranty.

[Q] Section of screen not responding to touch after screen replacement (video)

I dropped my phone and the whole screen became unresponsive. I ordered this OEM replacement on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/390871330961?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 and installed the screen following this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lkcg8g3i1s
(Note: I also replaced the bezel/chasis to the phone also while I had the phone open)
After replacing the screen I noticed that a horizontal strip at the bottom of the phone (above the soft keys) is not responding to touch at all. I did a factory reset on the phone and I'm still having this issue. I'm inclined to believe it is a hardware issue.
Any idea what else I can try? I need my phone functioning asap and would rather not return the screen and wait for another.
Use a multitouch test app to be sure that this region is not responsive. If so, than this is highly a hardware issue. Nothing you can do on software side.
What I also have in mind is that you may have installed the screen and the digitizer improperly.

Can you recommend me an app?
The digitizer and LCD came as one piece so I don't think there is an issue there. I'll open up the phone and re-install the connection for the screen/digitizer again and see if that does anything

Ugh, I can't even install apps. After factory resetting I wasn't able to sign in with a google account because the portion of the screen where the "@" and "." symbol is located is unresponsive. So I am not able to access the play store.
Any other idea of options?

Screen responds to 'touches' you didn't actually make - like, there is a ghost touching your screen
oh, well i dont know how to fix that sorry. But maybe you touched the edge of the screen accidentally?
i have the same problem for about a week now! did you find any fixes?
me too
Me to. I have tried every possible solution. Eventually whole screen has been replaced on warranty.
No guys i dont find any solution. And now? How we can resolve it?

replacing the display is the only solution
i have the same problem, ghost touches in the upper side, near clock.. specially when phone is hot or i press the top of the phone
Im so angry ??? bc we have this phone not usable!!
It's a hardware failure. Faulty display. If you suffer from "ghost touches" you should back up the data you want to keep, and return your Device to where you have bought it from as it might still fall under warranty (depends op what the cause is, and where you live). This can also get worse over time making the screen partially unusable (which was in my case). contact the seller, or contact customer service from Xiaomi.
I suffered ghost touches at the beginning of December (owned the Device for at least a month). Tried every software options i found around internet that could resolve it, but it was to no avail. I proceeded to unlocking the bootloader, install TWRP, flash a custom rom... For a couple of days i was fine. After those few days the top part of the screen (the part with the status bar) rendered unusable, on custom rom and stock miui. Tested it and it seemed that the area increased and also decreased from now and then, which is strange. After contacting my seller they agreed on sending it back including screenshot and the tests i ran. 1 day after they received my device they contacted me to say that it cannot be fixed (or at least they didn't seem to bother as the phone's pricerange is low) and i am receiving a complete new one (this was in the weekend btw). After that weekend on monday i received the new one and it's running better then ever, even the fingerprint is much faster.
Now just as a warning, I don't say you still have warranty. i live in the Netherlands where unlocking, rooting and all that does not void warranty, and returning a product is very easy to do. But in other parts of the world the companies can screw you over so you'll have to check that.
For those who are asking what is it, juste have a look at mine in dev mode to show the touch : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZApYI9otJI
This happens to me only when I'm charging the phone, still annoying, , I think it's something to do with the voltage and could be fixed with a software update.
