Just something come up in my mind for S7 Edge. Is it possible to use heart rate sensor as 2nd fingerprint sensor (other than home button)? Perhaps someone could come up with an app ?Thanks.
Spoken like someone who has no knowledge about how a heart rate sensor or fingerprint sensors work.
No it won't work.
But what if...
The fingerprint will only unlock your phone if it senses a heart beat on the heart rate sensor as well. To the normal person, if they have chopped your finger off, still wont think to also put their finger on the heart monitor. Genius idea!

Which means any living person could unlock your phone.
The heart rate sensor can't read your fingerprint. It's not designed for that.

I don't think you understand what I said. True the sensor only reads the heartbeat and not the print. But the phone would have to have a heart beat AND a your chopped off finger at the same time to unlock the phone. No one would think of this unlock method and the adult photos on your phone would be safe for another day!

But now that you've put this out there. Its pointless. People can cut off your finger and use their pulse to unlock the phone.

Except the finger print scanners on phones require the same thing that makes capacities touch screens work. Conductivity between the surface and the item pressing on the surface. Conductivity is the reason why a gloved finger doesn't work on a smart phone, why a common pen or pencil doesn't work either, or why a wet or submerged screen also wont work. The finger print scanner is the same way, not working when wet because it needs something that a non-severed alive finger print could only provide, conductivity. Even if we lived in a fantasy world where someone did make security that required an authorized finger print with a working pulse, would be pointless because the scanner itself wouldn't work with a severed finger, so what would the heart-rate sensor accomplish. And even if that WAS the case, engineers would have just made the much simpler route of integrating the heart rate sensor and finger print scanner together as one surface.
HOWEVER keep in mind that people do have different heartbeats, but any heart rate monitor on a phone shouldn't be sophisticated enough to detect minute details like that.
But all of this, doesn't even take into consideration that Android's best and brightest security measures are still being undermined by hundreds of people every day through internet tutorials. Theres no need for a fingerprint, when there are routes you can take that go completely around the requirement of fingerprint. Like 75% of XDA in the last 10 years has practically been JUST about getting around the securities of people's phones just for customizing.
Okay. If you're holding the severed finger with your fingers, surly that's keeping the circuit? What about if you also have to keep the phone at a certain angle, also blow into the microphone at a certain level AND rotate the phone 360 degrees. Now that's security that no one can crack! You may look a little silly on the underground unlocking your phone but it's worth it so no one can find out that you have the latest Kardashian game installed.

What are the mystery features held within the Adam?
HDMI In
Starting off the conversation I would like to state how Rohan has been interested in the graphics processing of the Tegra 2. In one statement he presented as a question he said "If it is capable of capturing 12.2 megapixel pictures from a camera what else could this feature be used for." I say HDMI in with the ability to record your favorite TV shows when it is docked.
I'm guessing the mystery feature is a kick-stand.

I think that would be the most awesome feature. I love the one on my EVO, but i hope they make it dual kickstand so it is more sturdy.
A kickstand would truly be epic, but didn't he mention something about a secret sensor on his blog?

It's not just one feature. Rohan had mentioned in the blog that the "mystery feature" is actually a number of features "locked" in the tablet right now. They shall be releasing a software update every 15 days that will unlock these features one at a time.
So besides the kick-stand, all the other features here stand a chance ;-)
In 19 Dec 2009 , when slashgear wrote an article about Adam for the first time , they said that it has a water sensor !!!

Also they said that this tablet is sth like this:
but in CES 2010 when the notion ink showed the Adam , it totally had a different shape
but I think the mystery feature is water sensor! I don`t know it is useful or not....
My vote goes towards a removable stylus.
I like the secret software features idea. Starting with built in swype.
Anyone know if swype would work on these units ?
Zuber
The water sensor
was just probably on a list of parts. It would probably be like the little moisture tabs in the battery compartment of your phone.
As mentioned before, the bonus feature will be something LOCKED in the first time, and unlocked with future updates, and it should be a sensor. No idea which one !
It could be onetouch breakit, 30 day live, or purposedly unresponsive touch....
Wasn't there talk of a back panel touch pad?
I swear I read that somewhere a long while back.
I'm on the fence about whether or not I should have pre-ordered one, but I wanted to wait for reviews first. :/
ill bet its NFC. They have been pretty open with saying it will get 2.3
NFC is a gimmick.
What is/does a "Water Sensor"? Is this for people living in deserts? xD
If it came with a dedicated comfy capacitative stylus and hole, it would be sweet.
I dont like kickstands unless they close up to be flush with the device, otherwise it feels weird on the back of the hand.
I don't like the idea of "unlocking" a feature, because I know Notion Ink is dishonest and that they really are lazy/don't have the resources to have everything functional from day 1. They will probably slowly optimise the stacks/drivers and once they are working properly they will "unlock" it in future updates (God knows how long it takes).
But I must commend them for making this seem fun.
For eg/ my SGS I9000 had a GPS unit but it wouldn't work at all, the Froyo update "unlocked" it, but the official Froyo update also gave me more lag, more force closes, and took away multitasking (each app is automatically closed when you hit the Home button!!!!).

Hi All ,
As far as i have noticed that there is an additional sensor on top when compared to Samsung galaxy note 2
Now my question is what is that sensor what feature are related to it i am suspecting is could be the Eye control feature ?
The eye control features seem to rely on the front-facing camera like with the S3 and Note 2, while Air Gestures relies on some infrared sensor above the display. As for Floating Touch, I have no idea how that works, but Samsung mentioned it's down to some entirely new screen tech (maybe it's just what the Note 2 does with the s-pen set to detect fingers instead, or maybe it's something deeper).
The S4 also has a thermometer and humidity sensor. It will be interesting to see how good they are and whether developers can up with interesting apps which use them.

Research! before posting things.
Xperia sola had this feature months back. not this matured but fine.
It's called self induction. It's a capacitive panel which has a stronger field extending beyond the glass.
the primary mutual capacitive panel has a less range but more accurate field. Hence it supports multi touch.
So two capacitive panels under one sheet of glass. That is impressive. The air view , gestures can all be written on to this . It explains why samsung uses 'barely' everywhere it talks about air view. Because its capacitive.
Infrared or IR is way less controllable ( You will need a strip of it on either sides - with visible opening for one fact).

Maybe you should take your own advice. There is no official information on how the Floating Touch works aside from Samsung saying it uses special screen technology. Here's a quote from GSMArena:
The Galaxy S4 has also borrowed a page from the Galaxy Note II book and features hover touch. Since there's no stylus here, it's made to work with fingers, giving you a small blue dot on the screen whenever you hold your finger a centimeter or two away from it. This makes it easier to avoid wrong presses when handling small items in the web browser and also enables some nice features like previewing the content of a folder in the gallery without opening it...While it does use the Note II SDK, Samsung says that it relies on special tech exclusive to the Galaxy S4 display.

As for the Air Gestures, Samsung also said an IR sensor was used, and the sensor is clearly visible above the display alongside the front-facing camera and other sensors:
The other novelty on the Samsung Galaxy S4 is called Air gestures. Those use the Galaxy S4 new IR gestures sensor and work in the web browser, music player and even in the dialer. The Air gestures allow you to command your phone by simply waiving in front of it.

S4 INFO
quoted from gsmarena, all the mystery about new sensors are now cleared
I believe the Air-Touch thingy is simply related to the touch-screen panel's sensitivity, or at least can be achieved this way.
I seem to recall that this was achieved a while ago in a cm-based ROM, on a device that doesn't ship with this kind of feature (like the Xperia Sola) by cranking-up the touchscreen sensitivity at kernel level, this way, it would have a detection range wider than the thickness of the glass that covers it, thus registering touch events even with the finger a few centimeters away from the screen.
EDIT: found the post, it was on Galaxy S Plus: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/floating-touch-on-the-samsung-galaxy-s-plus/
I'll however take a look at how the Samsung APIs handle this feature and if they rely on a specific sensor/set of sensors.
This might be worth investigating for my participation in the Samsung Smart App Challenge 2013.
Just went to the Samsung shop today, many S4s are in stock and waiting for people to grab it lol.
So I gave it a try and playing around with new functions, such as S Translate, it looks like google translate lol nothing really impressed me there. but I do love the one with eyes scrolling page while browsing, even though it kinds of slow but it just awesome.
So I wish to see them on our beloved note 8.0 lol that's all ;p
I have an s4 as well which i am selling, but i would like to get the air gesture and smart scroll function on our note 8, i would assume note 8 has the sensor for it since we have that smart stay and that air view with our pen

All of those can be ported as soon as I get the device. I.E il be building android 4.2 which will be our base to port s4 rom.
I remember reading somewhat that Samsung will be porting some of the features to their older flagships I.e. Note 2 and S 3. Wish I could remember where though. Can't remember if it was a reliable source or just some fudd blog.

The S3 may not support this feature, due to some hardware limitations (sensors maybe), or its just a kernel thing..

If you mean proximity sensor I think someone mentioned that the Wifi-only model doesn't have a proximity sensor.
I believe the SGS4 has TWO Proximity Sensors for the Hand Gesture features...one on each side of the earpiece. There is also an Ambient Light Sensor for auto display dimming, and the Front Facing Camera. The FFC (maybe combined with the proximity sensors?) is used for Smart Stay/Scrolling. The IR Blaster is used for Remote Control of your TV/DVR/STEREO using the Peel or Watch On apps.
Here is a closeup photo of the S4:

You can sort of get the air gesture capability by using the S pen and pressing the tip with your finger while holding it close (but not touching) the screen. Works well for scrolling. Selecting icons takes a little bit of practice as holding the s pen tip down too long results in a long press (on my 5110 it's real touchy).

LOL! Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing--it would be really nifty to be able to browse the internet without touching the screen (or the S-Pen), but just with air gestures (for when hands are dirty). It is too bad it seems like we won't see that functionality on the Note 8.
Instead of using the proximity sensor...
What about looking at using the Wacom Digitizer tech instead?
So the digitizer layer tracks the S Pen in a magnetic field... it would be a matter of determining what it is inside the S Pen that's being tracked... then perhaps buying some cheap alternative pens and removing parts.
Perhaps there is something small that could be stuck to a fingernail?

Hi there,
I’m using a Leather Flip cover and recently I noticed exactly where the flipcover locking magnet placed at the right center of the screen the spen is almost inactive around that area. In the attached image you can see I draw horizontal lines towards the edge of the screen and around that area it couldn’t draw line.
Then I keep the locking magnet away and it works perfectly. Any advice how to get ride off this issue. I don’t want to use without the flipcover as it gives a great looks.
Also does the Magnet could damage the phone display in long term use?

Some cases do this - some don't. My first one did - very annoying. It interferes with the digitiser.
I don't think that the effect causes permanent damage, but I changed my case just to be sure.

Well what I think, if its a magnet near the screen the spen would have problem as i heard somewhere it sends something to the screen so that it works even when not touching the screen, like hover air command etc. The magnet is very tiny but it still effecting. I think all leather flip have magnet to locks so I may need to find another design model.
However on this if i move the locking plate by finger it works fine. I just concerned if the magnet could cause anything on the LCD in long term use. Otherwise its fine, i use the spen very less.
Wacom's Spen uses a magnetic system. Two magnets = Nope.
Only way to fix that is to get rid of the magnet, or to stop using the Spen and start using a regular stylus. (Disables Spen features.)
As for permanent damage, it shouldn't, but I can't fully guarantee it won't.

Yes this is what I was trying to say. All I needed to know is: is there any way to solve this issue, without sacrificing this flip cover? I really like this design.
Something like if I put something between the magnet and phone which would reduce the magnet effect towards the screen?

But as for putting something between the magnet and the phone, there's no material that can block a magnetic field.

What you can try is one of those blister patches. (the thick silicon ones. They're made by Compeed.) It might provide just enough interference.(and its smooth enough to prevent scratching the screen.)

Hum... I will try one. also I'm thinking there is two magnet, upper and lower part and I can replace the lower one (beside the screen) with a iron metal. I know that, as I was the one who mentioned it back then on here. lol
I had only registered my right thumb. It could be either user error ( likely ) or a glitch.

Ah ok i saw it on one android YouTube channels
There were a lot of complaints that it was difficult to unlock the S10+ with the fingerprint scanner when the phone launched so Samsung very likely lowered the match criteria to make the fingerprint scanner more responsive which also made it less secure.
One Plus used to brag about having the fastest fingerprint unlock technology--and then owners discovered that nearly all of their friends could unlock One Plus phones with their own unregistered fingerprints.
There were also problems with the supposedly more secure 3D fingerprint scanner on the Huawei P20 Pro at launch--some reviewers reported that the unregistered fingerprints of friends could unlock the phone.
You could delete whatever fingerprint data you registered on your phone and then try adding your fingerprint again to see if the match becomes more secure.
OS updates can alter both how the fingerprint scanner records data and what criteria is necessary to be considered a match so erasing existing data and doing a new fingerprint registration might help.

Looks like I had brought xda a world exclusive at the time. More importantly my sanity is left intact.

Screen Protector are also causing security issues with the fingerprint.
Ausdroid: Do you have a screen protector on your Galaxy S10? If so anyone may be able to unlock your device.

I received a biometrics update this morning for improvements and fingerprint version 2. Or something like that. Caught me off guard as it wasn't a normal monthly OTA.
Where are you from ? What Carrier do you have ?
