A while back there was a rumor that the video camera was still in the 8525 but they just covered it up with the new silver bezel - anybody care to dismantle to prove/disprove this rumor?
Why would they cover it?
Seemed silly to me to but there were rumors 3 or 4 weeks ago that's what they did. I think the basics of it was that their network wasn't up to snuff for the video so they covered the camera (being cheaper then redesign?) so people wouldn't complain about the extra camera which they couldn't use. I think it's bunk but curious - I don't recommend anybody tear apart their 8525 - I doubt it's there but if you're feeling reckless and want to destroy your new $600 toy - let me know if you find the camera!
It is possible.

Now I'm just wondering whether some of the more expert folks here could work this one out without dismantling. The coolcamera programme can utilise the front camera as a webcam. Obviously there would be no picture if the camera is covered but I wonder what the programme will do if the camera is not present. Clearly a message saying camera not present would be handy but if it freezes or behaves strangely (some error message) that might be another bit of evidence suggesting the camera is absent. Perhaps someone with device could try using coolcamera to see what happens on front camera setting?
Just a thought
Mike
That's a great idea.
I just tried what you guys suggested with the coolcamera app and when I switched the sensor from main to front, I got a black screen. Of course this would make sense since it is covered up but I didn't get any error message.
Today while looking at the phone more closely, I noticed there is sort've a "flatness" or outline on the bezel where the front camera would be.
I'm a believer that the camera is still present on the phone...just disabled and covered up by the metal bezel on the 8525. I also agree with the fact it wouldn't make sense to redesign the phone just to remove the camera. Instead they could do it cosmetically, in this case, with the metal bezel that is on the 8525.
Assuming that the camera is still present, I'm hoping that a third party company (or HTC) can make a replacement bezel with the front camera opening.
That is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't break open those 8525s just yet...
Notice that even when you completely cover the main camera lens, you can still see colors when you cycle through the special effects (sepia, cool, negative). When you switch to the front camera and cycle effects, you get nothing (the screen never changes from black). If the front camera were present, the negative effect at least would be dramatic.
-Sar
Good point Sarumiso. I just tried changing the effects and nothing changed. It could mean that the camera is just disabled, though. Won't know for sure until someone opens up their phone.

Good points being made. An error message might at least have suggested camera is not present, unfortunately no errors does not prove things one way or the other.

so im an avid 8125 guy with my 8525 on the way, will be here tomorrow... anyway, lets pretend for a moment the cam is there, then its more than likely disabled in the cingular rom... would it be possible to flash an actual tytn rom to get the front camera support, then try the testing with the software and cycling through the colors? just a thought

Or just take a dremel to it.
here is an idea... is the service manual out there? like one specifically for the 8525, it may tell whether it exists or not. or what company actually does the repairs for the 8525, maybe we contact them and find out... or if all else fails then the manual would give instructions on how to take it apart...
"...anyway, lets pretend for a moment the cam is there, then its more than likely disabled in the cingular rom... would it be possible to flash an actual tytn rom to get the front camera support, then try the testing with the software and cycling through the colors?..."
shogunmark---will you be testing this theory of yours? I would try this myself but I'm too much of a nb to even attempt changing the ROM. Have to read up on all the how to threads. =)
well, i probably will, but its gonna a little while before i can do that, i havent even gotten my 8525 yet, fedex says it will be here tomorrow... i have alot more reading to do though... i am very familiar with cooking roms for my 8125, but from what i read so far it seems like the 8525 is a different animal entirely, so with my busy life its gonna take at least a week or 2 of reading before i make the venture
I've removed the two screws from the other side of the screen. Pried open the display case and bottom of it to about 1/8" and I could see that my phone does NOT have the front facing camera. It has the place for it, but definitely no camera. Would be nice to compare the Tytn's ie/mail/led pcb with the 8525s to see how they differ.
already done: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284384
I've created a full housing swap to include the fron camera on my 8525. Tutorial includes full instructions with pictures included. See link below

I have everything ready to do this. Camera installed and all. I have unlocked my phone to update to any rom. I'm willing to give this a shot. I just need to know if I where to get the ROm to download. Tis swap is a compete resemblance of the Japanese versionof my 8525, its the htc Z from Japan. http://www.japan.htc.com/product_htcz.htm . I dont know if there is an english versionof this rom to download. I'm ready to do this for everyone I just need direction
It's a shame that those of us that do have the front facing camera that the phone lacks a front facing flash or LED. Would be very handy otherwise those times when the urge comes for yet another self portrait and it happens to be night . . .
(We do not have 3G here in Oman.)
I've posted this on GENERAL but I think it makes more sense here.
I have a second BlueAngel which I'm selling:

I also have spare parts, PM me for more info.
Thanks!
Wow, how did you manage to put a camera on SX66?
Wouldn't mind to put one on mine too.
simple. order a camera for 9090, open teh pda, plug the camera in teh place, and order one dirrefent back cover, with the camera hole for the lens.

Really? It's that easy? No soldering? So what about exchanging it for that 1.3 Megapixel model? I'd even consider buying a second BA just to try it ...
(I remember there was a thread about that here a few months ago ... I just tried to search for it but the forum's search function seems to be broken)
But probably, when you say "plug it in place", you are talking about a daugthercard module that is BA-specific?
Typing 'qtek 9090 camera' yields no result on ebay.
Is there some other camera either better or more powerful but compatible camera available?
I tried the 1.3mp but the connectors don't match.
So... anyone interested on the BA I'm selling?

I am looking for a motherboard or an entire unit for parts, to include a usable motherboard. Let me know what you want and if we can use paypal.
Thanks,

Camera, Camera, whos got the Camera?
I have several Camera units for the SX-66 available. Each comes with the torx driver required, the board standoff and the camera unit. Let me know if your interested. The sale would need to be done through paypal.

I would be interested if the price is right. Do you also have the back case cover with the hole in it for the lens? Also, how do I know that my SX66 is compatible with this camera? I have no problems opening it up to check part #'s, but I don't want to buy if it can't connect.
Adding Camera modules to SX66
I've done this mod to two units with parts from the cheaper CDMA Blue Angels.
On one rebuild, I used the back plate from the CDMA phone as it had the camera lens hole, and just had to cut out an opening for the sim card. I didn't really bother making the cut very pretty, as you can't see the mod when the battery is in place.
On the second one, I drilled a 1/8th inch hole the back of the original SX66 cover, Location for the hole being the only tricky part.
Added bonus to this second aproach,, twice I have taken it to shows where cameras were strickly prohibited, and security personal inspected my phone, and let me into the venues.
Camera modules are a snap to install, but be aware the camera's flash module is not supported on the SX66 motherboard (someone correct me if I am wrong)
When shopping or scrounging for parts, don't overlook the the poor, retarded CDMA's. They just want to be loved, too.
It's Camera time!
Moti; all,
These units are compatable with, and designed to fit the connector and ribbon layout for, the Siemans SX66 model and the below listed as well.
Dopod 700
Verizon XV6600
O2 Xda IIs
Qtek 9090
T-Mobile MDA III
i-Mate PDA2k
Orange SPV M2000
Sprint PPC-6601 PPC-6600
If you are replaceing a camera on one of those listed above remember that these units are the camera only and have no flash module. For the SX66 that is what you want as the board makes no provision for flash at all.
I do have some flash capable units from the PPC6600 available for anyone who needs those, let me know.
The eBay item for these is 170218372271. There are 3 available on that item, but if you needed more we can work that out off auction. Paypal is a must though, sorry. The item comes with general instructions, a torx, and the template for the camera hole placement.
I also have complete upgraded SX66 units available (170216839140), I usually post only one at a time on eBay as they sell pretty well here at home!
Moti, as far as finding the elusive GSM prepped rear cover with camera hole, I gave up on that early in the SX66 camera upgrade project. It is much simpler for me to create the camera hole myself using a heated philips driver of the right diameter for the lens exposure.
I developed a template that allows me to tape it on and make the starter hole, then run the heated driver through, making a perfect opening. A picture of the result is shown in the eBay item 170216839140, and below, which shows how well this method works and looks.

Does anyone have any experience with swapping the housings between the 2? I am getting the Pure tomorrow but prefer the housing of the Diamond 2 whos full housing is available for purchase. Ive done a ton of swaps, even the iphone, but never between htc rebranded devices... any thoughts?
I'm not sure how well that is gonna work out for you. There are different things between the two of them. First the layout of the buttons. But that may not be a problem. The Unlocked Diamond2 has a front facing camera. So there may be an issue there. The device is curved differently so who knows it the Mini USB port will align right.
I'm sure that no one has done it since the Pure has only been out for a few days and some people that are getting it don't even know of the Touch Diamond2 or that the PURE is a Touch Diamond2. The T-mobile EU version is just like the pure but has a FF camera. So if anyone who has that phone and has done a swap can tell you for sure but I doubt it. There could be slight changes the just throw the entire thing off.
I was just thinking about that. I too prefer D2's design over pure's but I needed 3G. I've done many phone customizations and would definitely undertake this task if it's possible.
I think one of you should try and see if it's possible. There are TD2 Housings for sale on ebay. $20. Worth it if it works.
The $20 one may just be the housing. I asked the seller if its the complet 3-peice housing set. If not there are more for under $40 that show pics of the full set and say its the full set in the description. If you don't trust ebay go here and pay the full price. They have original OEM parts for almost any mobile.

yeah i found the cnn one and will probobly end up doing that, from the pictures they look like they both have everything in the same places, except the front facing camera will not be there. I wouldnt be suprised if you could add that though during the swap...

Any updates on the housing swap project? Was it do-able?
Just curious.
You will have to replace the digitizer as well. It's impossible to remove without damage. Also, be careful with the ribbon cables. You need to slide the black retainer slightly to remove them...
BTW....P.M. me if you get into it and get stuck or nervous. I have taken mine apart a good 5 times to get the dust out of it.

I have not opened my pure yet but I know past phones that AT&T left the front facing camera off the socket was on the board you just needed the camera itself and plug it in
did anyone try this yet? i really want to do it because the hard plastic gets scratched up really easily and the back cover is starting to look bad.
Ya the Pure is dog ugly compared to the Diamond 2 IMO...I doubt it will be possible though, to do that switch.

You guys don't read do you?
Look at Tomtommy306's posts.
The Galaxy S6 uses the same camera sensor as the note 4, but the S6 camera module has a slightly better lens. I use my phone for all kinds of product pictures and scanning notes/ lectures at school so I gotta have the S6 camera in my note 4. I'm going to document my swap here.
I just received my S6 camera module $20.00 from ebay G920F is the S6 model and 16M is the mega pixels the sensor captures. I'm still researching the video limit removing hack especially increasing 4k capture time from 5 min to 30 min. Heres my new sensor, I'm waiting on amazon to ship some disassembly tools I've been sorely needing. It's about time I had a real sprudger and not a harbor freight nylon body panel pry bar.
Pic of new sensor.
Let me know how it goes I've been thinking on doing the same thing
From what someone said samsung said the camera want work in n4 the to the software not compatible with the 2 phones. Let us know if it works along with some sample pics showing the improvement or issues.

^Hahahaha that got me rolling
Did this work?
So I want to say this is one of the hardest phones I've ever opened. I have a bunch of video footage I took and have not yet edited any of it. If you're super impatient I'll give you the super fast rundown without any details. Yes it works, but it isn't plug and play. The sensor is the same but the circuit board it is mounted on is not the same. The S6 camera module won't fit into the cutout made for the note4 camera module. What I ended up doing was removing the optics from the S6 camera lens, and swapping the actual lens portion of the camera module onto the note 4 sensor board, I'm waiting on gold foil tape from amazon to repair my EM shielding that got tore up by the glue. The note4 is entirely glued together. I'll post up pics and videos a bit later when I get more time. You can see the S6 CCD sensor and board there, I just snapped it since it was in my way and I couldn't fit it in my phone without cutting up my motherboard. I got the optics from it and stuck those in my phone. The photos are shot from my S4 which I'm using while I wait for foil tape from amazon. I have not gotten to test the software compatibility because my phone is still apart.
Another difference is in these little rollerballs inside the lens. I imagine they have something to do with focusing, The note 4 has 3 white ones in each rail you can see one in the photo it's the white sphere in the bottom of the magnetic generator part of the module. The S6 has smaller black ones as well, you can see in photo too. The note 4 doesn't matter on the arrangement of rollers, but the S6 has different roller arrangement and I wasn't expecting to find those so I don't know if I lost some or put them in the wrong order, I have to get another S6 camera module to investigate that if it matters
tl;dr you can swap the optics but it isn't as simple as you'd hope
This is pretty hardcore, I have to say. I was thinking whether or not this would work in my head, and now we have someone crazy enough to actually try it.
auto focus has some issues, but if I let it autofocus then move the camera manually I get a really nice clean shot. Noticing the phone gets pretty hot right behind the memory card slot, I'm wondering if I need thermal paste or something back there, but I put the phone back together and everything is ticking along just fine, I'm going to order another s6 camera module so I can pay attention to the order and composition of the rollers maybe that matters too. If that doesn't work then I'd say while the sensor may be the same apparently the board that drives the electromagnets is different and therefore this won't work since that board will not fit unless there is someone who can fashion an adapter cord to go between the sensor board and the mainboard thus allowing repositioning of the sensor board. I'm going to see if there exists some sort of "extension cord" for this type of connector. Basically I just need a bit of ribbon cable to give me a little flexibility in positioning the board and I can just plug and play the S6 board in there since I dremeled out my subframe a little.

Uh I would say less. Auto focus flat out isn't working. The lens isn't getting positioned correctly relative to the ccd, this is a software issue or a hardware issue. The video is producing right now. Guess I should start taking some footage showing the problems. Just finished doing the swap video. This is only my second youtube video so I'm learning. I'm a filthy casual =P
Video should be produced and uploaded to youtube in an hour so sayeth the progress bar.
Off to the gym back in like 2 hours. Depending on how automated cyberpower is with youtube I'll have a link for you guys.
AAAND I forgot sound, man im a scrub I'm gonna postpone gym its too hot right now anyway.
Gutsy! My note 4 will not autofocus at all. Im interested if you think it is hardware or software. I have dropped it once. Could that have damaged these balls you are talking about?
Maybe or jammed it, the sensor is just free floating in there with 1 permanent magnet on each side of the optics carriage (the part that actually contains the glass lenses) then in the plastic housing there are what I think is 4, 2 coil electromagnets, one on each side that float the sensor to the correct position while it rolls on the little rollers in the two V grooves to keep it perpendicular to the ccd.
This is a photo of the S6 sensor, the note 4 sensor you can see in the video. Note 4 sensor has 6 white rollers total 3 for each Vgroove S6 has atleast 1 white 1 black for each but I may have lost some because I opened that sensor first and wasn't expecting tiny tiny rollers to be inside.
Okay learned a lot still a lot to learn about making videos.
Here is the video of the complete teardown with some commentary about what I'm doing. Gives you an idea of what you'll be up against in there and shows the disassembly of the camera module.

I considered a similar situation when trying to use my phone as a decibel meter to measure how loud my car exhaust was. I was getting complaints from one of my neighbors about my wrx being too noisy so I ended up measuring it with my phone. It didn't work because the microphone on these phones is chosen and calibrated for its sensitivity to the noise a regular human voice makes when the phone is reasonably close to a human mouth. Using the phone in a "live" environment or somewhere there is a ton of background noise or amplified vocals or other sources of noise outside of its specs will likely interfere with your recordings. You'd need to test it in a more scientific way to narrow down the problem try isolating if all recordings are ruined or just really loud ones or if even the choppiness could be caused by processing power and too many background apps or something.
My Ph-1 was very broken. However after spending some time in a draw I decided to give it a new lease of life. Last piece of the puzzle is the rear cameras. I've looked everywhere I can think and even started looking at other phones that use the same image sensor to see if it uses the same part.
I imagine the answer is no. But does anyone know anywhere selling a replacement for the rear camera?
