Custom FW for Galaxy s7 edge (pure/stock Android)? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi guys!
It's been a long time since I had an Android phone, but this time around Samsung convinced me to change platforms.
Tomorrow I will trade my 6s for a Galaxy S7 Edge, and I'm wandering if there's a ROM which looks like Nexus 6P pure Android. I don't have any interest in TouchWiz functionality and I'm 100% sure that I won't use edge futures.
I'm looking for pure Android experience, and buying a Nexus 6P it's not a solution for me.
Thanks,

Downside to the exynos s7 edge?

I am considering selling my tmobile s7 edge and get the international one for root. However, I'm a bit scare if the battery life might be worse than the SD model. Plus I'm not sure if I'll be able to utilize the LTE network for TMobile. Can someone shed some light on this?

It is better in all ways
The note 5 with the last gen exynos chip was pretty awesome in my opinion.
Just as smooth as the sd s7 edge in my opinion.

The only downsides are the phone-side of the equation: no VOLTE, no wifi calling, no native video calling and a slightly weaker signal. Other than those things, the upsides are faster updates (the S6 t-mobile still doesn't have 6.0), better battery and root.

I think wifi calling will be eventually available in custom ASOP ROM. My TMobile Note 4 has it

Ew, AOSP.. never understood folks who have a Samsung and ditch out everything samsung for a stock Android experience. Yeah sure AOSP has A LOT, A LOT of customisation much more than TW. But that's not why I bought a Samsung Galaxy phone for. I bought it for what SAMSUNG has to offer.

Actually, I dont like tons of customization. For me, I prefer the smoothness of AOSP with neat settings design. Not likely, I will go for AOSP on S7e. If you compare the TW on S7e and Note4, Samsung has improved a lot.

That may be why you bought it. However, others buy samsung due to the specs of the device. Not the software. However, to stay on topic you will not be able to flash any custom rom outside of TW based rom since the soc is not open source.
How bad is the signal since I live in a relatively weak signal area
Edit: Sorry im still new to the Android XDA community since I just recently switched over from iOS. What is TW rom? And "soc"?

S7 Edge CM13 Rom / Stock Android Rom

Hi guys!
I'm going to buy the S7 Edge (Snapdragon) in the next days, but I'm a big fan of CM/Stock Android Roms.
All of my previous devices had a CM Rom and the last 2 devices was Nexus.
As i can see, there are is no variety (or existence) of such kind of roms.
There will be more in the future? Is there any rom that i can trust for now?

Def buy the international variant if you want any kind of root ROM etc. Snapdragon as far as I know isn't rootable/bootloader unlockable. No aosp is avaliable yet but better chance on the exynos

The Chinese/HK SM-G9350 is a rootable/bootloader unlockable phone. It's just that nobody knows that, right now only chinese people are making roms (Aurora ROM). I think that should be put in consideration since it's literally a bootloader unlocked Snapdragon variant. I think it's possible to just then install stock USA rom and then root it. (I haven't tried it, but I've heard you're only supposed to flash AP file in Odin)
IMHO, If custom roms is a concern , you should go with nexus line. Even if we had a port of cm, it would need at least 1 year to become ready as a daily driver and even then the camera and bluetooth wouldnt work %100 !

Any thoughts about buying OnePlus3 isntead?
Obviously S7 Edge is a better device, but would oneplus be a good choise?

A OnePlus 3 is a great choice if you want to root/ use a custom rom. It has a unlocked bootlader and also doesn't void warranty if you root it. I actually think I should've gotten the oneplus 3, because it has all the features I need, compromises on features I don't need, and having a near stock experience. It's absolutely worth it over the S7 edge for its price.

So confused - nexus 6p vs s7 edge exynos

Hello,
I am about to buy nexus 6p. The main reason is the pure android for app development.
There is also the s7 edge for 50 euros more in my country.
Considering google stops guaranteed updates on September 2017 for nexus devices, does the s7 opens the possibility for continous support by updates and custom roms, so i can keep on latest features and stuff ?
Really need some help here.
Thanks a lot

If you want original android and Google`s guaranteed Update then you should go for Pixel devices (obviously if money doesn`t matter). Though nexus 6P is an excellent device, and the Nexus 6P is the best Nexus ever made, but it`s bit old(2015),though it has also excellent XDA support.
But my vote goes to S7 Edge. It`s an awesome device with faster processors, a better camera and a bigger battery to boot and full of features and excellent XDA support.google may stops guaranteed updates for Nexus Devices in future, but I think it`s impossible for Samsung to do the same for S7/S7 edge. But you`ve to spend some extra (as you`ve already mentioned).
Go for S7 Edge and hope you`ll not be regretted.
Now it`s your choice.
Had 6p sold because poor performance and Zero battery, buy s7 edge it is better phone
I've had both! I prefer the S7 Edge, and it's what I'd recommend simply because it's much newer, the camera is better and well, even though you don't get the speedy updates from Google via the Nexus 6P, Samsung are pulling their fingers out of their butts and they're improving it!
The S7 Edge will have longer support, be faster, better battery life, batter camera, better screen, more ram................hmm which one to get
Supportwise wait for the S8 since once that is released the S7 will be in second row.

yeah, I would love a pixel one, when it gets lower in price, maybe later.
I really don't see why you're "so confused". The very first thing that you say you want is "pure android", which isn't and never will be Samsung's goal or target market. And since that is your #1 priority, why would you consider a device that's 2+ years old?
I like my S7e. But you need a Pixel.?

Thanks for your response,
As I said in my first post 'is about google stopping updates' after september that's trouble me.
Sure, pure android is the way to go for me but i'm not gonna spend so much for a pixel atm.
As long s7 takes the nougat update or maybe even the next version that's ok with me.
Is there a chart or something for s7-s8 upcoming android versions/updates?
Go on Galaxy s7 edge.
is nice device and have alot custon rons and aplication.

Nougat is already on the way and the S7 will get Android O as well; just a question of time.

No and if it would not be reliable at this time.
However, for Galaxy flagships you can always count on release version plus two more (S7 was released with M and will get N and O, S8 will be N with O and P).
Google itself says two years for its devices which is usually release plus one and probably one more for its devices.

From what we know the S8 has the same camera and battery, smaller on the 8+ so it makes more sense to get the cheaper S7 Edge
But the S8 will have one year longer support and will be in the front row regarding updates once released.

I'm sure it will.
But what about its cost ?
range of 700-800 euros ?
Because i'm talking about 500 euros here, for the s7 edge exynos

anybody have a nexus 6p thinking about going to the s8+?

development and support are a lot different, but the dimensions are almost the same for a bigger screen. Thinking about getting the s8+ but the whole nexus google like getting updates right away without any problems and the changelog for the latest magisk kinda scared me. saying that the last magisk before 12.0 update broke a bunch of samsung phones. :S
nexus 6p: 6.27 x 3.06 x 0.29 inches (159.3 x 77.8 x 7.3 mm) 5.7" screen
Galaxy s8+: 6.28 x 2.89 x 0.32 inches (159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1 mm) 6.2" srcreen

Are you looking to get a carrier S8+ or an unlocked one? If carrier then bootloader will be locked down just like on the S7/S7 Edge. Your best bet is to get an unlocked Exynos one if you're hoping to be able to root & flash.

Sounds good, but still want to see the real
i will want an unlocked one then. I got to play with one today at best buy. the size of the phone with that huge screen is awesome. i dont even stress my fingers trying to use it.

this is exactly the debate. what i like about my nexus 6p is i can flash o right now or the latest n update for anything and it'll work. the latest changelog for magisk kinda scared me for samung devices. saying that 11.x broke a bunch of samsung devices.

Agreed if you are capable enough to buy s8 then why to buy 6p? Its like having lots of money and buying cheap phone just for updates not features
Think about it lad..
Considering the battery life on my 6P has gone to sh*t, I'm really looking forward to the S8+ being easily available so I can pick one up.
Will be keeping the 6P as an antique though, the last Nexus flagship ever made.

Yeah s7e martphone 2016 -> s8 smartphone 2017 ????
I too have the Nexus 6P and I've already ordered my S8+. Much like most, my battery life tanked. So I replaced the battery and it's about 75-80% of what it was brand new. I'm really looking forward to the water proofing, screen, Samsung Pay, and camera. I'll probably keep the Nexus 6P around for flashing and tinkering, but the S8+ will be my daily driver! Gonna be a real challenge going from Nexus, root, etc, back to locked down AT&T bloat but I think I can cope! I hope so at least.
I'm looking to switch!
I was about to pre-order the S8+ from samsung and then the agent told me there was no unlocked version!. I'm on simple mobile and i don't know if t-mobile would be willing to unlock their version if I'm not their direct customer. Any thoughts?

Why not get the US Unlocked model? Works with all carriers.
The SM-G955U to be specific.
I have nexus 6p with battery problems too and would like to try an S8+. The hardware looks great but coming from a nexus I am just worried about all the Samsung bloatware and features that I will never use. I suppose there is always nova launcher and a package disabler app etc but it seems a waste paying for loads of features when I would prefer a leaner interface. But that screen does look amazing.... decisions...

that is not what i ment. i was talking about the fact that an update broke a bunch of samsung phones. who says that could happen again another way, root, rom, magisk.

If you don't want to wait, I believe Verizon phones come unlocked now, so if the LTE bands are compatible, you could get one of those.

Android O?

Considering the S6 came with Lollipop and received Marshmallow and Nougat, I highly doubt the S7 (it came with Marshmallow) won't receive O at some point.

Knowing Samsung, then I believe we will see android O on our devices in January February . Because for Sammy it always takes 6 months or more to update their devices, and they will now be focusing on the s8 not on the s7.
