Not sure why I bought this garbage of a phone. - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyways bought this moto x pure bc i dropped my Nexus 6 and the screen cracked (thank God this phone still works lol) and it ran fine on 6.0 but doing what we do, tinker with things I decided to root it. All was fine. Went on to install aicp. Started having reboot issues. Would boot fine and end up on a black screen. Tried to restore to stock, either all links for this crap phone are dead or are incomplete. Been playing with phones for years and I've never had a phone as terrible as this moto x pure. What trash of a device. Reason why I only buy Nexus phones. Anyways if anyone out there had an actual link that still works just to get me back on 6..0 so I can sell this crap please link it. Spend all weekend on this phone. Bout to throw it off my balcony and watch it shatter for the lulz.

You can get it direct from moto

Already tried. They want to email me a link. I never get the email

This device isn't trash. Maybe you should learn what you are doing. Just because you had issues and were trying custom ROMs doesn't mean the device is garbage. But anyways here is what you want. Now stop complaining.

Already tried that file. Won't boot. Phone will only run stock lollipop 5.1.1

The bootloader does not need to be locked to accept an OTA.

The phone is not crap, but certainly didn't meet my expectations, I thought I was upgrading from Oneplus One, but not really, it's sluggish, even on custom roms with custom kernels, struggles with demanding games, below average battery life, camera is average, even with 21 mega pixels, bad low light pics, gps is slow, takes time to lock, Bluetooth is not reliable. On the other hand, screen is beautiful, design is nice, flash for selfies, turbo charge. Im waiting for the zen 3 deluxe... Swappa the moto x
By the way, the phone has not fault for you bricking it.

I'm getting the prompt to download it.
I downloaded it once and booted into twrp and went into the /cache folder to try to install the zip but it threw an error and wouldn't install.
other than reverting back to the stock recovery does anyone know of a way to install the update?

To me ...reverting to stock is the simplest way.
If you absolutely don't want to lose your stuff ...you have to return it to stock piece by piece. Many threads about it already. Many.
Tho...I just transferred all my stuff to my pc ....including my titanium backup folder....pics and all that...and used rsdlite ...and put all my stuff back after. Rooted it. Restored my titanium backup. Done.

You can thank the folks who hacked root access on those 2 carriers , do you really think the folks at moto do not visit xda , these forums are the best way for manufactures to get opinions, consumers dislikes and likes and probably the best place to get ideas to improve they're operating systems

While I can agree with this partially, if AT&T and Verizon didn't junk up the firmware and change stuff that didn't need to be changed, then we wouldn't really have a legit reason to root the phone. Dev Editions are for people who want exposed modules and all that jazz, and I feel like Moto should've made a MM phone that was Dev Edition, but can't have your cake and eat it too. Again, if AT&T and Verizon used the same firmware as T-Mobile did, then I'm sure a LOT more people, including myself, would be happy and not need root.

I'm happy the USB OTG is back and the phone feels snappier. Battery life (for me) is noticeably better after a significant decline with 4.4. Good that they fixed all the bluetooth volume issues I was having with my headset (basically one volume on the LG Tone+ and when connected to the car, voice notifications came into the phone and not out of the car speakers). Also looks like some notifications have had some tweaks, such as picture auto-backup now shows a thumbnail of some of the images that were backed up. It's a REALLY good update for me.
Only thing that bugs me so far is that when you remove the USB storage, you get a notification that stays there until the next reboot.
I already had great battery life. But it seems to have gotten slightly better. Not marginal, but it was enough for me to notice. Basically getting a bit more out of a 100% charge.

Well if the support's loose, hopefully they can tighten it back up.
Wouldn't bother me if it did happen though, this is the only phone I've ever had where I prefer the stock ROM (with some xposed tweaks) to a custom, including CM which has been on every device I've owned that it supports.
It was just a matter of time before he lost it again.. Really am surprised it took that long.

I have not run a ROM yet that didn't have issues its not even worth it with xposed. Since I have some apps that require xposed modules to work I have to run it anyway. So there is no benefit to a custom ROM that since the beginning has been broken ie. No speaker phone camera and video issues. Just don't see the need unless it was flawless. I will say this my phone is much smoother on a custom ROM that is for sure. But no active notifications and touch less control sucks.
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Well, Active Display and Touchless control were not going to be portable anyway..
Most of the things in GravityBox give a feel of a custom ROM.
One thing I don't understand, why all the hate for xposed modules? I am not too fond that they must exist but don't get why one be be so obverse to running a couple to make life better.

Once Motorola stops supporting this phone , we will need custom roms to stay updated. And I think AD and TC will be an inbuilt feature in the future versions of android. So I would want dev to go on to keep this community alive.

is it hopeless waiting for turbo development?

I see there is a thread abt a reward for who ever makes an exploit to root the turbo.
I have an upgrade available but I don't want to waste it on a phone that can't even be rooted. Another thing is that this decision is on limited time. Because once the turbo gets lollipop , rooting will be out the window . so if you wait to long to get the turbo and it's shipped from the factory with lollipop, your screwed from the get go. So judging by the older lines of "moto droids" do you think or have read anything online abt development being slim to none?
Or any future plans on a developers edition ?
The nexus 6 is just to big for me. And the moto x is just not for me

You are forgetting that there is another variant of the Turbo, the Maxx one that will come with unlockable bootloader and free of Verizon crap. People will make it their way to get on of those, and probably development will be significantly more active that with Turbo.
On the other hand, Lollipop doesn't mean no more root, there are already devices with Lollipop and gained root few days ago, so it shouldn't be a worry.
:fingers-crossed:
Correct about root and lollipop but what's the point? Why do you NEED root and unlocked boot loader when lollipop gets here? Xposed won't work. Lollipop will be the os that negates the need for root.

Xposed doesn't work yet, but likely will in the future. And there are other things to use root for than just Xposed. Such as Tasker, AdFree, Cerberus, etc. Root works great on my Nexus 7 with Lollipop, albeit without Xposed.
I mainly want/need root for ARLiberator or ARUnchained. Right now I can cast to my receiver and get sound but ARU gave full mirroring and allowed me to control my phone through my headunit (with root). Combined with Tasker to automate and it was fantastic. Xposed was real nice to have and I'm sure it will be updated for L at some point but I wasn't really using a whole lot on there I'll miss. Same goes for battery tweaker like Greenify. It was awesome with root and combined with Xposed but w/ the monster battery on this thing and the improvements with Project Volta I'm thinking I won't miss it so much.
Just want root access to freeze the VZW crap. My 2 cents.

You can disable those apps now which is essentially the same thing.
Disable works just as good
Hadn't tried that. Just hid them using a launcher. OK, I'll disable them. Gracias!
I don't think it's hopeless. Just look at the bounty. No, it's no guarantee a dev will obtain that full amount but it show's that we're interested.
My guess and hope is that the Middle Man will come back and we'll be able to get unlock codes. It's our best shot.
In the meantime I'll stay at KitKat and cross my fingers. Root for me will give me custom DPI's which 4.7"+ phones need so badly. Besides that I'm doing just fine without root. Yeah, a few customization options would be fine but stock Motorola Android flies!
Only thing I really want/need is WiFi Tether. I've managed to tether using a USB but the process is way more complex and only allows for one device at a time.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
Without root you cannot manipulate the hosts file meaning you cannot block ads completely as you can with root. This alone is enough to make root worthwhile for me because I despise ads. I also like to change fonts at the system level and make many other customizations that require root and lollipop in no way negates those needs.
Not that my opinion or likes and dislikes matter. And that's the thing, people who say root is not needed speak for themselves just as I speak for myself and no one else. I don't ever say YOU need root or YOU do not need root because I have no business deciding what someone else does or does not need. Just saying...
I just think it's going to take some time gents. Phone has been out for what? Two weeks?

Agreed. This is the on thing I really want. I can live without the rest of the stuff. If I could pay for an app that worked for wifi tether I would do that and probably be happy without root all together.
I had the RAZR maxx HD. I thought we'd never get root for the longest time. It took a while - a bunch of months, at least, but we got it.
Now, the maxx HD never was nearly as popular as the droid turbo. That's a fact.
I'm sure someone out there will find a way. It's not about if, but when. That's my opinion, at least
2 things I want root for..
Messing with speaker output
And shutter speed of the camera
This phone will probably never be rooted, but if you aren't okay with that then why would you ever buy this device?
Maybe I'm not understanding this, but why is a developers edition needed? Why dont you just unlock developer mode on the phone you get? I did.

Rooting will not change the phone experience in any way... Swapping ROMs improve it though.

Oh, but it will.. And it does. Rooting alone allows you to do most of the things you can do on a custom ROM, but you're doing it to the stock ROM. Even without a custom recovery, you can still modify system files, freeze/uninstall system apps, run root apps, etc.

Where did you hear that the battery life isn't good?
I typically get 2.5 days per full charge with between 4.5 and 6 hours of screen on time per charge depending on if I am reading, or doing media (games, youtube).
If anything I would wait for the Note 5, but that will be a while. I'd suggest getting the Note 4 because it's quite simply a very amazing beast of a phone and then using JUMP to upgrade in 6 months if you so desire.

Not worried about loosing warranty by rooting?

Trying to decide between the Moto g4 or my replacement Nexus 5x. Loosing out on having a warranty if I unlock my moto g4s bootloader is a big deal as my Nexus was just replaced 8 months later under warrenty.
Well best to just stay with the 5x then

Yes, probably. I don't know how you guys deal with ads.
Don't have ads as I bought the non Amazon one. Also if you have the amazon one you can't root or unlock bootloader
Sent from my Moto G4 Plus using XDA-Developers mobile app
He was talking about the ads in general... You can't use an ad-blocker like adaway if you are not rooted. That was issue nr 1 to me.
Also, a secondary issue: I am a geek that likes to see the cell tower information. Using cellmapper, with a rooted Qualcomm device, one can see the actual LTE frequency. Not possible to see if not rooted (or non-qualcomm).
Against all rational thinking, I rooted my phone and installed xposed. In the few months that I've owned this phone, I've also tested around three different ROMs, didn't like/had bugs on every one of them, so reverted to rooted stock. I've experienced screen burn, bootloops, and soft bricks, but I still don't regret rooting my device. The best things on android are accessed after root. Warranty doesn't cover much either. Most common problems aren't covered by warranty, and I've placed enough trust in motorola to go on with this.
