Data usage app - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, is there any data usage app that work on Shield TV? I would love to know how much data do i use on my shield and which apps use the most data.

I used traffic monitor. But the only way I knew for sure was to use wireless instead of ethernet. In wireless mode you can see how much each app uses. Shield now/hub was using about 25gb to 90gb per day. This was eating up my 300gb data cap quick. My trial expired now and I am debating whether to continue or not.

[Q] Can AT&T monitor tethering on a rooted phone?

So I tried the wireless tethering built into CM 6.1 this week and it's awesome! However, I noticed that my data widget added a 3rd line marked T (the other two are W(ifi) and C(ell)...) it still shows 0bytes next to it though, so obviously it knew that I had activated the tether feature since it added the T line to the data counters, but since it didn't count any of that data in my data usage tracking does that mean I'm okay and AT&T can't see it? I don't want to incur additional charges for tethering. It's cool, but not THAT cool!
No they can't track it.
Cool, thanks.
This Is cool. I been messing around wwith it a lot. I tether wifi to my Xbox via network adapter. I can join live download updates and Facebook. Even voice chat but it wont even try to join a mw2 map. Just loads and loads. Something with Nat u belive but no one here can fix it.

Not really sure why this doesn't work. Are you joining a game or creating a game? I can see it not working if you're creating a game perhaps. By default, you can't even ping the phone's IP address which is a big issue if you're going to host anything (it's totally unreachable).
But, I have actually tethered my PC and played Left 4 Dead 2 without a hitch. All NAT does is route the client's IP to the hosts' IP (to the outside world). You shouldn't have to have the XBOX NAT'ed to join a game at all.. and if you do, well shame on Microsloth...
"If you are using a NAT or firewall, you will need to open (forward) two ports for incoming traffic if you are going to host games. If you are not going to host games, you may or may not need to open these ports, depending on how your NAT works. You will need to consult your NAT documentation for information for how to open (forward) ports."
We cannot forward ports at this time... it may be possible sometime with 3rd party software though. But like I said, you shouldn't have an issue just simply joining a game. Once a connection is established from your end, port forwarding is not an issue. Port forwarding is only for incoming traffic trying to establish a connection (for a server).
Ya I just try to join. Maybe it matters depending on edge or 3g? The reason I thought Nat was because I got message says Nat is not open and may make your experience not as good or what ever.

Is there a way to verify this? 911jason says his widget isn't picking up data usage while tethered, but I just tried both tethering and wifi hot spot and using 3G Watchdog, it most definitely showed usage on both.
It uses your data it just don't show up to at&t as tethered. Just like using it on your phone

Little help?
Okay, so I tried tethering and wifi hotspot for the first time today, just to check them out. Now when I connect to my computer and turn on USB storage, the drive doesn't show up. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
*EDIT* Restarting my computer did nothing, but restarting my phone seems to have fixed the problem. Weird.

Stream media from phone?

So the Nexus 7 has some super sweet specs for that price point, but the one thing holding me back is the lack of an SD card slot. No, no, no, Google!!!
So I'm wondering if it's possible to work around this by streaming media from my phone (Galaxy S2, ICS + Touchwiz) directly to the tablet via wifi or bluetooth? I.e. the tablet connects directly to the phone, and not via a wifi network.
If not then I might have to pass on this tab, which is a damn shame because it looks so nice...

I was wondering the same thing. If this had a microSD slot I would have ordered one already.
The other thing holding me back is no HDMI output. Other than the “Q”, how could you stream video to a TV? Is that even an option??? I currently use my ipad to stream MLB.tv to my TV and this is a must for any tablet I own. I want to get rid of my ipad for the Nexus 7 but these two issues are holding me back.
no microsd card makes me glad i bought the tab2 7.0 when it came out 2-3 months ago.
i was planning on selling and buying this if it had it (due to nexus dev community), but that is downright silly not to have the slot.
I suspect you can set up a local ad hoc wifi network between the two.

Maybe it would include the wifi direct feature thats in the galaxy nexus. That would connect the two nicely

Probably, but even if not, use wifi tether on your phone, give the tablet internet. then use the cloud.
Also, as I posted in general, use micro USB to USB for more storage
you can use wifi direct or you could set up ftp on phone then mount it on tablet

The cloud isn't an option for me as I travel on the London Underground a lot. No clouds to be seen down there, that's for sure.
Perhaps use the storage on your phone with WiFi hotspot and XLink to transfer files? I think that would work just fine.
I kind of wish it had more to offer, but then it would certainly cost way more too. So I think the options and alternatives will come, given the mass of people who will get this .

Yeah, I hate it that they didn't at least offer higher capacities. I'd gladly would have paid for a 64GB version. I wasn't going to get one, but then I figured that I may simply use it to read on or play games instead of store all my media. I think it would have been better if they had an microSD slot and included 2GB of system storage and 8GB card for data. That way people could put whatever sized card they wanted to on there. :\
I guess Google wants people to expand their imaginations.... Imagine how awesome your device would be if you had access to wi-fi on your commute.
Wifi Direct Might be an option as stated earlier. I haven't played with it yet though. Also don't forget the NFC Android Beam that was upgraded in 4.1 and also Bluetooth could also be an option. I'm going to head home and test some stuff on my Acer A500 tonight and see if some of this works.

Ok here's how i managed to transfer files from my phone to my tablet without needing to be connected to wifi/mobile data connection - and it's much faster than bluetooth (bout 3-4 min for a 500mb file. I wasn't able to properly stream video, but you can play the file as you download, so it's kind of like streaming only you have to delete the file afterwards.
1. Download FTPserver (free app) from Play onto your phone.
2.Turn off your mobile data connection and then switch on wifi hotspot.
3. Setup FTPserver (user, password, port etc) and make sure you check all the boxes for accepting connections.
4. Connect tablet to the wifi hotspot. Open up an FTP client (es file exporer or whatever) and connect to your phones FTP server. Voila; access away.
If you've already got plenty of space on your phone, it's bypasses the need for wi-drives and the need to carry around an extra gadget.
[update] Using Samba Filesharing (similar setup to above) app on my phone i was able to stream video over the hotspot, only bout 5 secs buffering before it started to play. So pretty good.
[update 2] The built in server on FileExpert allows you to stream - works better than the samba app which was a bit crashy when starting it up.
Bubbleupnp works for me.

FoxFi been good to me as a hotspot when i need one dont know if works well on the s3 since i have the s2
I'll be using FoxFi on my Desire for Bluetooth tethering (instead of WiFi Hotspot to save battery). And then PDANet on the Nexus 7 to pair to the phone's Bluetooth.
I haven't done this yet but this is how I believe it works from what I've read.
bump plz
I used foxfi to do Bluetooth tethering from my Droid Bionic. Required no other apps on my Nexus 7, and seems to work great. I have no clue if Verizon can tell I am doing this. I don't plan on using it much at all though, just occasionally while I travel.

Yeah, just started playing with this yesterday and hit the same wall. Interestingly chrome works great when I have the connection setup this way but nothing else will see the connection, not gmail, now or any other app. To heck with the battery life, I have a monster battery on my Infuse now, tried wifi tether but my Nexus won't even see it. =/ Will keep messing with it though and see if I can come up with anything.
Gmail, Play and a lot of other apps seem to work without any issues through bluetooth tethering.
BBC News app thinks there's no internet connection though, so that's one app I can't use.
Loading web-view of an article in gReader Pro informs me there's no internet connection but loads the web page just fine in dolphin browser after clicking on OK.
The Nexus 7 can be configured to do USB tethering natively

If you're using the free version it has a time limit of 30 minutes, after which you need to restart it.

Need app to monitor tethered traffic. Details inside.

I'm looking for an app to monitor data usage by any other device tethered to my phone. Basically it is to monitor how much data my son is using either from his phone or when he connects his PlayStation. I would also like to see what I am using from my laptop.
I am aware I can view this from settings on my phone but it lumps all data together. I would like to see each individual device connected at one time while preferably seeing each of those devices current bandwidth draw.
Any recommendations are helpful. Thanks.

Data usage -> scroll to WiFi hotspot. That's how much has been used.
Side note; one feature missing from a lot of ROMs is see connected users and option to kick from network.

HD 10 2017 mirroring or Wi-Fi direct to phone?

After a few attempts, without success, I figured it wiser to ask here than spend hours.....
Trying to sync files directly from my android phone to the tablet, without using data or Wi-Fi. Tried mi drop, refill sync, refill sync, and allcast with no connection made. Shareit worked for sending from fire hd tablet to phone but not from phone to tablet.
I see the tablet has hotspot but I can't find that setting nor does my phone see it when the apps enable it. Does it have it?
Second, I would like to mirror my phone to the tablet if possible. Is it possible? Apps?
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Without using data or WiFi, your best bet might be to manually copy files using a microsd card if the phone supports it.

That's what I did. Then used "folder sync" to keep them synced to Google drive....though really would like to mirror the phone for streaming video over data so I'm not using the hotspot.
Thanks!

Without WiFi, I can't imagine how to do that. There's no hardwired input for video on these devices.

I know apps can turn a device into a Wi-Fi sink & sender but I don't think the fire tablets have the ability for Wi-Fi direct/hotspot, although a couple apps I installed turned on the hotspot I don't think there really is that hardware ability - certainly wasn't found by my phone.
My guess is, Amazon neutered that hardware ability because they're trying to force people into their cloud options, only....but I'm not certain.
