FoxFi been good to me as a hotspot when i need one dont know if works well on the s3 since i have the s2

I'll be using FoxFi on my Desire for Bluetooth tethering (instead of WiFi Hotspot to save battery). And then PDANet on the Nexus 7 to pair to the phone's Bluetooth.
I haven't done this yet but this is how I believe it works from what I've read.

bump plz

I used foxfi to do Bluetooth tethering from my Droid Bionic. Required no other apps on my Nexus 7, and seems to work great. I have no clue if Verizon can tell I am doing this. I don't plan on using it much at all though, just occasionally while I travel.

Yeah, just started playing with this yesterday and hit the same wall. Interestingly chrome works great when I have the connection setup this way but nothing else will see the connection, not gmail, now or any other app. To heck with the battery life, I have a monster battery on my Infuse now, tried wifi tether but my Nexus won't even see it. =/ Will keep messing with it though and see if I can come up with anything.

Gmail, Play and a lot of other apps seem to work without any issues through bluetooth tethering.
BBC News app thinks there's no internet connection though, so that's one app I can't use.
Loading web-view of an article in gReader Pro informs me there's no internet connection but loads the web page just fine in dolphin browser after clicking on OK.

The Nexus 7 can be configured to do USB tethering natively

i keep getting force close on foxfi had to uninstall

If you're using the free version it has a time limit of 30 minutes, after which you need to restart it.

[Q] Fascinate WiFi tether

I rooted my Fascinate, mostly to be able to WiFi tether it for my laptop and the Kindle I'm getting soon.
I've tried WiFi Android Tether app, Barnacle, and Barnacle Legacy.
The Barnacle App would give me an error along the lines of "Can't find eth0", then Barnacle Legacy(previous version) app did not give me an error but the laptop will just say "Connecting" then never actually connect.
I have the same problem with the WiFi Android Tether App where it keeps "Connecting" but never connects.
I don't think it is my laptop because I never have a problem connecting to any other WiFi...
I've looked everywhere but I can't find any help!!

Almost sounds like you're not fully rooted. Do you see the Superuser app in your app list? Also, did these apps ever prompt you to allow root access?

yes
yes to superuser app.
the ADB prog says i am rooted
other root progs like SETCPU work
and the root progs ask for superuser permissions and i can set them
Look in General forum and for confirmed working widow tether. I use widow tether daily on mine. Works great. Have a nice day

Ive tried that exact one, computer wont connect.ive even tried pre12
I've tried quite a few different apps to no avail, but tried pre9 tonight and it appears to be working nicely.
I must be missing something, cause I'm a noob, but what is widow tether & where can I get it? Tried 2 barnacles & 3 wifi tethers with no success.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
You need to use the wireless tether 2.0.5 pre9, not the latest version.
That one works 100%.
Newest ones don't. This is already covered somewhere in the stickies.

i am using Pre9. Thats the one I was originally using when the problem occured.
I'm using wireless tether pre11 right not and so far so good. I kept getting an issue where wireless tether would work for a short time (about 1 to 2 MB of data) and then would hang. pre11 is working good so far without this issue. give it s shot. you can always drop back to an older version.
I'm having the same problem, my Vista laptop sees the network and won't connect, my wife's Windows 7 netbook will connect now problem, so I know the phone is working right, it has to be something with Vista 64

I've had no problems with pre11...I've only used it a few times, but I did stream an entire episode on Hulu on my desktop and it worked without a hitch. I am on OSX.
FWIW, I happened to root & installl barnacle last night on my Fascinate. Barnacle worked happily once I made sure that A)Superuser automatically allows barnacle permissions and B) Skip wpa_supplicant was checked. I've only had an hour or two of testing, but no glitches.
Info: SCH-I500[RKAVZW] - i500.04, 2.1-update1, 2.6.29
Barnacle: Encryption: Off Access Control: unchecked, Ch:1 Custom Wifi Ad-hoc: none, Skip wpa_supplicant: checked, pp0, eth0, DHCP: 1200s lease, NAT 32000, 300, 100, 30, 90
I use Easy Tether and it works flawlessly.
Not sure exactly what is going on with your issue...however FWIW:
Any build of Wireless Tether would cut out on me occasionally - it wouldn't drop connection permanently, but rather for several seconds.
I use tethering to play online games that require a constant stream of data. Barnacle Wifi Tether Legacy works flawlessly. Never lose connection.
Are we looking at a fluke kernel issue with the OP's question?
I have tried all of these options and can't get any to work. The only thing that does is the stock hotspot app I reprogrammed from a thread here. How are you getting this to work? Do I need to remove the vzw hotspot app first?

You guys are talking about your phone dropping your connection I cant even get mine to connect I use BARNACEL and OPEND GARDEN I even tried using EASY TETHER to my laptop and sharing my wifi with my built in INTEL. How did you guys get connected?
While I haven't done much tethering with the fascinate, I did use the "wifi tether" app on my incredible to share my connection with a PS3 successfully. Also, I seem to remember the built-in tethering working as well (if you're on CM7/MIUI). Actually, I just saw something the other day about needing to do a fix for the stock android tethering to work, so I don't know if that's a good option. Try wifi tether.

Phone to Tablet Internet

Just found an awesome APP in the market called Pdanet Tablet you install it on your phone then on your tablet and use bluetooth to get internet to your tablet via your android phone!!!!
It works pretty well on my Epic to my Transformer!
No Root needed (This will be for those of us who have not hacked our phones to send off Wifi already.)
Not working on my tab :\
Edit: I fixed it. reboot helped.
Awesome find, thanks! It's not quite working consistently for me, but I was hoping the PdaNet dev would make a version just like this. I'm sure he'll get it working reliably soon enough...
tethering off my nexus s, 2.3 hotspot w00t.
Anyone get this to work on Droid X, 2.3?
An update: after I installed this app, my TF Internet connectivity was completely hosed. It might be coincidental, although I doubt it. Essentially, I lost the ability to connect to a number of services via wifi, even after I uninstalled the app. Couldn't connect to Google properties, Tapatalk couldn't connect, etc. Absolutely miserable.
Only way to fix it was to do a factory reset. Multiple reboots and reconfigs of wifi settings did nothing.
Moral: be careful with this app.

I have not installed it yet in my tablet.
But I just read it from the market and they said you should remove the proxy setting after using it, otherwise the internet will not work anymore.
Not sure if they meant you will have to remove the proxy setting everytime you finished using it. That will be a hassle if we need to switch between wifi and BT every time.
works for me bluetooth tethering to my Droid Incredible. Havent tried it longer than 30 mins so I havent experienced any disconnects yet.
You do have to reset the proxy every time you use the app (set it to use it, disable it when your done). If you dont, wifi wont connect anymore (at least for me).
It is a little bit of a hassle, but i can live with it. At least the app gives you a shortcut to quickly change the setting.

Not sure why you need an app. I wifi tether with my Nexus S and it works fine. Just have 2gb package from ATT. They don't seem to care.
I got it installed, and everything went smoothly except I have no internet access via browser, or gmail.
Otherwise, this looks like a good app, easy to use.
I tried this PDANet for Tablet. The first beta release was buggy and there was a lot of disconnects with some debugging prompts.
Then I saw they updated it several days ago.
After updating it, its still not a smooth experience.
Got it connected to the phone, launch the browser and I could browse the web, but after 2-3 web pages, then it will stop working.
Email does not seem to work for me. Both GMail client and the native Email client, none works for me. Google Map seems to work.
But again, the connection dropped very frequently.
Hi,
Does anyone know of a solution for the TF101 when the phone you want to tether to is not an android device. I am still using my trusty HTC HD2, and it's WiFi hotspot is "ad hoc" and not seen by the TF, and its bluetooth creates a PAN, and rudely tells me that the TF needs a NAP.
Maybe I can use the "windows mobile version of PdaNet on the phone with the android tablet PdaNet client on the TF??
Wifi hot spot on G2x works perfect and I get 4g speed will post screen shot when I figure out how..

activating tethering via tablet.

Alright,
that might be very tricky but it would be awesome! Following situation: Me sitting in a sub, galaxy nexus in my pocket and the nexus 7 in my hands. Now, I would like to activate Tethering via the tablet on my galaxy nexus and be online 5-6 seconds later. Anyone an idea?
Thanks for your input!
Found myself in the same situation yesterday in the coach on the way home from work. Had a lap full of nexus 7 and earphones whilst trying to pull out my GNex out of my pocket hoping that the driver doesn't slam on the breaks!
Have just decided to leave tethering turned on on my GNex and when I pull out my tab, just flick on the wifi so it connects. Not ideal on battery for the GNex but it works.
I use bluetooth tether on my vision.
Find it saves a lot of battery power.
I leave the 2 devices connected constantly, for tablet talk, and just leave the option to allow bluetooth tethering turned on on my vision.
So when I don't have wifi, I just tap 'connect' on my n7 and I'm good to go

I've had the same irritation using wifi hotspot function with my GS2. Just tried the bluetooth tether and it works just fine. Many thanks for this suggestion!

I stopped using bluetooth tethering because it would autodisconnect whenever a wifi signal was around and then doesnt reconnect. As for wifi it will stay connected and maintain positive connection longer.

I leave the Bluetooth Tethering option ticked on my Galaxy Nexus and connect with my Nexus 7 (via Settings > Bluetooth > tap on Galaxy Nexus) when I need to (or just place a shortcut on your homescreen).
The problem is that Bluetooth Tethering cuts out after a few minutes (known bug) and I have to repeat. But since it cuts out, it doesn't drain the battery at all (unless I am actively using the data connection, of course).
I suggest using foxfii and PDAtablet for Bluetooth tethering. A few apps won't recognize the internet, however you don't have to worry about it cutting out. And it still uses Bluetooth so there is less battery drain than WiFi.
Just always remember while Bluetooth tethering with whichever option to turn OFF your WiFi on the tablet. If not it will keep searching for WiFi even though your BT tethered, and cause data drop.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
You could probably use Tasker to kick WiFi Tethering on on your phone when it detects your tablet neaby (via bluetooth), so when you want to connect, you turn wifi and bluetooth on on the tablet.
EDIT: Of course, you can also use Tasker to turn WiFi Tether on on your phone based on your location, the absense of your work/home wifi, the time of day, and many other options or combinations of options. It's a really useful app, IMO.

I'm trying a slightly different scenario. I don't want Bluetooth tethering, I want WiFi tethering but with Bluetooth connected so I can use Tablet Talk. It almost works. For a short while it'll work that way and then the WiFi drops on my Galaxy Nexus and won't reconnect until I disconnect BT again.
I'm probably posting this in the wrong forum since I've since determined the problem is with my GNex and not my N7.
I'm curious as to how people are using BT tethering though. In my experience there are too many applications that don't work over the BT tether. Are those of you tethering over BT just using the browser? Seems far more limiting than using WiFi tether... unless of course I'm also trying to connect over BT at the same time.

I've solved my own problem... I've use FoxFi in the past with my TouchPad and didn't find it any better than the built in Tethering. Today I installed it and the add-on on my tablet, and I can safely say that this setup rocks!

Well crap. I was wrong, I had WiFi tethering on the whole time. At least the connection isn't dropping for the moment, but this still isn't the experience I'm going for.

So straight forward but such a revelation for me!! I always hated tethering w/ my phone cuz it sucks the battery and it gets so warm, but the BT tethering is a great alternative. Now my tablet is relevant wherever I go w/ my phone.
+1 on blue tooth.
Whenever I use wifi hotspot for any length of time, my phone will eventually time out and cut the connection. Using bt it will stay tethered for hours on end.

I was curious about this as well. I briefly tried Bluetooth tethering a few days ago with FoxFi and PdaNet, but I noticed that although I could surf the net, I couldn't get Gmail to sync. I didn't try anything else so I don't know what else doesn't work, but is this typical of Bluetooth tethering?

Just tried basic bluetooth tethering and happily sent and received email
Is basic Bluetooth tethering simply pairing the phone and tablet and that's it (no third party apps)? I tried to do that and even though the use internet connection box was checked for both devices (they won't uncheck for some reason either), I couldn't get internet working, which is why I resorted to FoxFi/PdaNet.
Like I said, auto tether from the market is the best option

It works on the Verizon Note 5. Using it right now to post this.
FoxFi is working for me (Verizon) and at least lets me survive without rooting, although I'm starting to miss more features and stability with popular ROMs. I'm having more force closes and phone freezes than I've ever had on a rooted phone in the past.
My question is: has anyone vetted the FoxFi app? I understand that it has to install a certificate to accomplish it's goal. But has anyone tested network traffic and attempted to see if the FoxFi app is reporting network traffic or content to the FoxFi developer? It would be capable of doing this even when the FoxFi app is not functioning as the certificate remains. This could easily collect CC numbers and account passwords. I'm feeling like someone is watching me through the window at night.
easy thether works on bluetooth too.
It DOES NOT work on the ATT Note 5. Had to side load it and it will not turn on the hotspot. I refuse to pay another $30 for Hotspot function to AT&Thief so I would love to find a work around.

I just installed the app and it works. FoxFi use native tether program on the phone. I also have "Tether WIFI Router" that tethers directly. There are no real controls with FoxFi, but with other program you have to configure to make it work.
That problem I'm having, if I'm using FoxFi or the Tether WIFI Router, it disconnects my bluetooth. I can not seem to get around that issue. When I disconnect the tethering programs I have access to my bluetooth.
Let me know if you need the settings.
