FoxFi & PDANet - Galaxy Note5 General

I can report that FoxFi & PDANet (USB or Bluetooth) works great on my Note 5. This means I do not have to root my phone. :cyclops:

Can anyone confirm if this works on the Verizon Note 5?

Yeah but wireless tethering doesn't work you have to use another application.

It works on the Verizon Note 5. Using it right now to post this.

FoxFi is working for me (Verizon) and at least lets me survive without rooting, although I'm starting to miss more features and stability with popular ROMs. I'm having more force closes and phone freezes than I've ever had on a rooted phone in the past.
My question is: has anyone vetted the FoxFi app? I understand that it has to install a certificate to accomplish it's goal. But has anyone tested network traffic and attempted to see if the FoxFi app is reporting network traffic or content to the FoxFi developer? It would be capable of doing this even when the FoxFi app is not functioning as the certificate remains. This could easily collect CC numbers and account passwords. I'm feeling like someone is watching me through the window at night.

easy thether works on bluetooth too.

It DOES NOT work on the ATT Note 5. Had to side load it and it will not turn on the hotspot. I refuse to pay another $30 for Hotspot function to AT&Thief so I would love to find a work around.

Use wifi tether router.

Could you provide a little more details on how that works. I can't seem to figure it out I have the Note 5 and the note 12.2 tablet (WiFi only)

I looked at Wifi Tether Router (the app) and it is for Rooted phones only. Now I'd love to root this phone but if I did I certainly wouldnt need this app. Is there another work around?

Yes it works perfectly.
Only issue I had was using Adguard at the same time but just turn it off then activate FoxFi/PDANet

I'm using it with WiFi and I'm on ATT

Likewise, if someone could pm me their WiFi tether settings, any different than the s6? Haven't tried those settings yet as I haven't had the need yet, and been tinkering around on other stuff lol

Works great on my Verizon note 5 and s6 edge plus.
ETA: both on unlimited data lines

What are you using to get WiFi tether with AT&T? Because FoxFi isn't working for me.

I just installed the app and it works. FoxFi use native tether program on the phone. I also have "Tether WIFI Router" that tethers directly. There are no real controls with FoxFi, but with other program you have to configure to make it work.
That problem I'm having, if I'm using FoxFi or the Tether WIFI Router, it disconnects my bluetooth. I can not seem to get around that issue. When I disconnect the tethering programs I have access to my bluetooth.
Let me know if you need the settings.

I just want to make sure the details of making the Wifi tethering to work before I void my warranty/trip knox. And I would greatly appreciate the settings please.
THANKS!

Anyone got their hotspot working w/o paying for tethering?

After rooting my phone I figured i would give the hotspot a shot. But when i try to browse on my ipad it brings me to the VZW self provision broadband page.
I normally use wifi tether, but i would rather be able to use the built in because its an infasture netowork vs the ad-hoc wifi tether gives me.
Not the case

actually your right and your wrong at the same time sadly; your right about the infrastructure network vs ad-hoc, but wrong about the 3g hotspot app vs. tethering & portable hotspot not an app.
The 3g hotspot app is a verizon product not googles in the sense your looking at.
The tethering & portable hotspot should have been activated in wireless & networks section, right between "Bluetooth setting & VPN settings" from a froyo(2.2) google standpoint but in our case its not even there.
Hope this clears up the mistakes about froyo tethering & portable hotspot and verizon 3g mobile hotspot app.
Yes it does thanks! I have a nexus one So i know what your talking about.

he stated in the post that he was rooted, he just wanted to use the native tethering application.
Does this mean that if we can get a vanilla Froyo or a custom ROM compiled from source that we'll have the true Android hotspot?

why do not you just use pdanet from market?
There was a new experimental Wifi Tether build that was released dismorning bringing it up to Pre9. I was unable to find a change log, still adhoc?

If its just the one computer you are logging on with use the BT method very easy and works quite well for free and even on non-rooted phone

Is it true no wireless tether with gb build

Anyone able to confirm this? If that's the case ill probably stick to my rooted froyo...the tether is just too convenient at times...

You can tether, however the 3G wireless hotspot no longer works, I do believe Wireless Tether still works however
Didnt work for me... Tried using code.android wifi tether for root users yesterday and it did not work.
Think the application has to be updated.

Contact the developer. I use usb tethering through easytether, and it works perfectly
I had two tether apps, both failed under .595...depressing.
Someone inboxed me that the older version of the tether app works under GB, but I haven't tried looking for it. I will probably take JMoney47's advice and use easytether since he says it works.

Are you talking about the paid built in 3G Hotspot? That's working fine for me. Also one thing I like is how Motorola actually kept the code in for USB tethering now as well. I like this because now I don't have to worry about VZAccess manager which never supported the X - I just use my Mobile Hotspot/USB Tether 2GB plan with the built in USB Tether.
If your talking about rooted wireless tether, my buddy said he had issues with it. But the "official" one works.

FoxFi been good to me as a hotspot when i need one dont know if works well on the s3 since i have the s2
I'll be using FoxFi on my Desire for Bluetooth tethering (instead of WiFi Hotspot to save battery). And then PDANet on the Nexus 7 to pair to the phone's Bluetooth.
I haven't done this yet but this is how I believe it works from what I've read.
bump plz
I used foxfi to do Bluetooth tethering from my Droid Bionic. Required no other apps on my Nexus 7, and seems to work great. I have no clue if Verizon can tell I am doing this. I don't plan on using it much at all though, just occasionally while I travel.

Yeah, just started playing with this yesterday and hit the same wall. Interestingly chrome works great when I have the connection setup this way but nothing else will see the connection, not gmail, now or any other app. To heck with the battery life, I have a monster battery on my Infuse now, tried wifi tether but my Nexus won't even see it. =/ Will keep messing with it though and see if I can come up with anything.
Gmail, Play and a lot of other apps seem to work without any issues through bluetooth tethering.
BBC News app thinks there's no internet connection though, so that's one app I can't use.
Loading web-view of an article in gReader Pro informs me there's no internet connection but loads the web page just fine in dolphin browser after clicking on OK.
The Nexus 7 can be configured to do USB tethering natively

Tether (Solved)

*Problem solved, see Verizon Development thread
Has anyone had success editing sqlite database to allow native tether or find a working a third party app...beside foxfi (haven't tried it yet). I tried all my usual options on wifi tether and couldn't get it going. Someone with more knowledge of sqlite could probably get native tether working pretty easily.

This is pretty interesting because VZW lost the lawsuit and the loss meant they werent allowed to block third party tether apps.
Has anyone tried Barnacle?

I tried barnacle and got this message:
"WIFI: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0: Operation not supported on trasnport endpoint

but nothing happens. It doesn't even broadcast a signal.
Did you guys get the message that "wifi is in control shutting down" on wifi tether

Did you guys do a couple of things required on the Razr HD to get it to work.
You need to do the sqlite entitlement database modification. -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800796&page=2
Did those of you trying to use WiFi Tether change the profile???
Also you can backup the sqlite database, just in case you are worried about changing anything.
I don't have the phone yet, but plan to get one.
Has anyone had any luck??
i tried with my tmobile and the same. cant get wifi tether to work with a 3rd party app.
Tried USB tether with Foxfi on my Verizon G2 and it worked flawlessly but I kept hitting the usage cap since its a free version . pretty much useless for me.
WIshed Wifi tether worked.
Man, I was thinking about getting the g2 but not so sure if I can't get wifi tether to work! Definitely staying tuned. Anyone try hotspot control?
Shoot.
If I can't tether with this, back to the store it goes.
Give it time guys, the phone just came out a couple days ago. I'm surprised we have root already, it took the Moto X/ULTRA/MAXX weeks to get rooted.
As far as tethering, I tried using Portable WiFi Hotspot which is just a toggle to the built in tethering, which works on my Note 2, but didn't do anything on the G2. Then I downloaded Wireless Tether for Root Users and it looks like it works, it shows it started and I see 0.6Kb of data being sent but it never actually creates a wireless network.

Wifi Tether for Nexus 5

Does anyone of a non root or root wifi tether app that works with the Nexus 5?
I plan to root the phone but I'm still not sure if I want to install another ROM since it is snappy already. ( I usually root to OC and use Wifi Tether )
WiFi hotspot is built into the phone as is. There is no need to install an app.

Not necessary as this is built in to stock.
Thanks guys! Yeah I was just wondering...
I don't want AT&T finding out and then charging me the hotspot fee.

I`ve tried different roms and my hotspot is not working, is sending me to the t-mobile upsell page.
I have unlimited data with T-Mobile with 2.5 gbs included of hotspot. I already past my hotspot data but still running it. I noticed if I have my APN Protocol IPv4 it let's me use my phone data as a hotspot even after I used up my provided hotspot data. If I switch it to IPv6, it bans me from using my data as a hotspot

Okay so pretty much using the built in tether app is a no go. I'm not going to pay for hotspot. If anyone knows of a WiFi tether app that works with nexus 5 let everyone know. (I'm on AT&T). Will be receiving phone first week in Dec.

The built in one doesn't work because it tags all packets with a "hotspot" data tag which is then being denied by your carrier because it's hotspot data which you didn't pay for. Either the internal program needs to be modified to not tag the data, or another app which doesn't tag data should be used to get a free wireless hotspot.

Exactly - this is true for ALL Android handsets running Android 4.3 and above.
Previously, we've been able to get away with it unless your phone was running a carrier-specific ROM with the packet tagging enabled - but now it's part of the Android subsystem.
If your carrier is setup to track this, they now can.
I'm lucky with mine - they seem to only care if I tether a laptop to my phone. If I tether a tablet or another phone, it's fine.. Different traffic I guess! So I just use a VPN on my laptop, and it goes undetected.
Here's a workaround for the uninitiated ones.... Should work on most mobile devices. You'll probably need a VPN if you want to tether a laptop.

Make sure to follow directions closely.
I used a program called SQLite Editor which can be found at the play store. (YOUR PHONE MUST BE ROOTED)
Open SQLite Editor.
Navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/
Edit settings.db by adding a line "tether_dun_required" and set the value to "0".
Also make sure your APN settings use IPV4.
I've rebooted my phone after doing this and the edit stuck and tethering worked.
Best of luck!
Excellent man, it worked like a charm, thanks
I solved with this app: WiFi Tether Router
on Google Play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
the developer has done a compatible update
I contacted the developer via email and he told me after a few hours
the developer advised me to select these settings
Interface wlan0
Method 0 - Auto
works also with
Interface wlan0
Method 2
this one seems to work for me.. wifi works but i choose to usb tether https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en
also paid version is better then free
I would really like to bypass the T-Mobile 2.5GB limit.
