Just found an awesome APP in the market called Pdanet Tablet you install it on your phone then on your tablet and use bluetooth to get internet to your tablet via your android phone!!!!
It works pretty well on my Epic to my Transformer!
No Root needed (This will be for those of us who have not hacked our phones to send off Wifi already.)
Not working on my tab :\
Edit: I fixed it. reboot helped.
Awesome find, thanks! It's not quite working consistently for me, but I was hoping the PdaNet dev would make a version just like this. I'm sure he'll get it working reliably soon enough...
tethering off my nexus s, 2.3 hotspot w00t.
Anyone get this to work on Droid X, 2.3?
An update: after I installed this app, my TF Internet connectivity was completely hosed. It might be coincidental, although I doubt it. Essentially, I lost the ability to connect to a number of services via wifi, even after I uninstalled the app. Couldn't connect to Google properties, Tapatalk couldn't connect, etc. Absolutely miserable.
Only way to fix it was to do a factory reset. Multiple reboots and reconfigs of wifi settings did nothing.
Moral: be careful with this app.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I have not installed it yet in my tablet.
But I just read it from the market and they said you should remove the proxy setting after using it, otherwise the internet will not work anymore.
Not sure if they meant you will have to remove the proxy setting everytime you finished using it. That will be a hassle if we need to switch between wifi and BT every time.
works for me bluetooth tethering to my Droid Incredible. Havent tried it longer than 30 mins so I havent experienced any disconnects yet.
You do have to reset the proxy every time you use the app (set it to use it, disable it when your done). If you dont, wifi wont connect anymore (at least for me).
It is a little bit of a hassle, but i can live with it. At least the app gives you a shortcut to quickly change the setting.

Are you getting 4G speed off your Epic? I'm using wifi tether right now and only getting 3G speeds even if 4G is enabled, what kind of speeds are you getting?

Not sure why you need an app. I wifi tether with my Nexus S and it works fine. Just have 2gb package from ATT. They don't seem to care.
I got it installed, and everything went smoothly except I have no internet access via browser, or gmail.
Otherwise, this looks like a good app, easy to use.
I tried this PDANet for Tablet. The first beta release was buggy and there was a lot of disconnects with some debugging prompts.
Then I saw they updated it several days ago.
After updating it, its still not a smooth experience.
Got it connected to the phone, launch the browser and I could browse the web, but after 2-3 web pages, then it will stop working.
Email does not seem to work for me. Both GMail client and the native Email client, none works for me. Google Map seems to work.
But again, the connection dropped very frequently.
Hi,
Does anyone know of a solution for the TF101 when the phone you want to tether to is not an android device. I am still using my trusty HTC HD2, and it's WiFi hotspot is "ad hoc" and not seen by the TF, and its bluetooth creates a PAN, and rudely tells me that the TF needs a NAP.
Maybe I can use the "windows mobile version of PdaNet on the phone with the android tablet PdaNet client on the TF??
Wifi hot spot on G2x works perfect and I get 4g speed will post screen shot when I figure out how..

I rooted my Fascinate, mostly to be able to WiFi tether it for my laptop and the Kindle I'm getting soon.
I've tried WiFi Android Tether app, Barnacle, and Barnacle Legacy.
The Barnacle App would give me an error along the lines of "Can't find eth0", then Barnacle Legacy(previous version) app did not give me an error but the laptop will just say "Connecting" then never actually connect.
I have the same problem with the WiFi Android Tether App where it keeps "Connecting" but never connects.
I don't think it is my laptop because I never have a problem connecting to any other WiFi...
I've looked everywhere but I can't find any help!!

Almost sounds like you're not fully rooted. Do you see the Superuser app in your app list? Also, did these apps ever prompt you to allow root access?

yes to superuser app.
the ADB prog says i am rooted
other root progs like SETCPU work

I've tried quite a few different apps to no avail, but tried pre9 tonight and it appears to be working nicely.
I must be missing something, cause I'm a noob, but what is widow tether & where can I get it? Tried 2 barnacles & 3 wifi tethers with no success.

You need to use the wireless tether 2.0.5 pre9, not the latest version.
That one works 100%.
Newest ones don't. This is already covered somewhere in the stickies.

i am using Pre9. Thats the one I was originally using when the problem occured.
I'm using wireless tether pre11 right not and so far so good. I kept getting an issue where wireless tether would work for a short time (about 1 to 2 MB of data) and then would hang. pre11 is working good so far without this issue. give it s shot. you can always drop back to an older version.
I'm having the same problem, my Vista laptop sees the network and won't connect, my wife's Windows 7 netbook will connect now problem, so I know the phone is working right, it has to be something with Vista 64

I've had no problems with pre11...I've only used it a few times, but I did stream an entire episode on Hulu on my desktop and it worked without a hitch. I am on OSX.
FWIW, I happened to root & installl barnacle last night on my Fascinate. Barnacle worked happily once I made sure that A)Superuser automatically allows barnacle permissions and B) Skip wpa_supplicant was checked. I've only had an hour or two of testing, but no glitches.
Info: SCH-I500[RKAVZW] - i500.04, 2.1-update1, 2.6.29
Barnacle: Encryption: Off Access Control: unchecked, Ch:1 Custom Wifi Ad-hoc: none, Skip wpa_supplicant: checked, pp0, eth0, DHCP: 1200s lease, NAT 32000, 300, 100, 30, 90
I use Easy Tether and it works flawlessly.
Not sure exactly what is going on with your issue...however FWIW:
Any build of Wireless Tether would cut out on me occasionally - it wouldn't drop connection permanently, but rather for several seconds.
I use tethering to play online games that require a constant stream of data. Barnacle Wifi Tether Legacy works flawlessly. Never lose connection.
Are we looking at a fluke kernel issue with the OP's question?
I have tried all of these options and can't get any to work. The only thing that does is the stock hotspot app I reprogrammed from a thread here. How are you getting this to work? Do I need to remove the vzw hotspot app first?

Is there Any way to tether TF with Android Phone after Carriers' Crackdown on Tethering?
I have all the apps i could possibly need installed on my phone, yet even after paired with my transformer via BT, and the transformer showing it being connected to the internet. I get 0 data going from my phone to transformer.
I've tried PDAnet 3.0, Barnacle and WIFI Tether. No dice.
And you can rule out not knowing how to do it, I've been tethering for the past year only started being an issue after the crackdown.

I tether just fine on my mytouch 4g running cyanogen mod 7. I dont think carriers notice if you tether another android device because on their end it just looks like an android device accessing it, not a laptop or such. I think they check user agent strings. I've honestly never had a problem tethering on TMO and never got any text or anything about it being blocked. I do keep an eye on my data usage just to make sure I dont raise any red flags in their system. I havent tried tethering my laptop since the crackdown but I did install a plug in for firefox that allows you to change the user agent string so the servers think it's an android device accessing the network
Hey Guys, been following this thread since I ordered from Best Buy, finally decided to join and post. I have mine coming on the 12th hopefully.
I read about the crackdown on tethering but from what I understand they are just making the tethering apps not show up in the market, they are not necessarily doing anything to prevent tethering.
I am currently using wireless tethering on my droid 2 with the Ipad 1 and have been for quite some time without a problem. Hope that helps and love this forum, thanks guys...

One thing to note is that Honeycomb doesn't recognize Ad-Hoc networks. You may be having problems if you're trying to set up your phone as a wi-fi hotspot. Trying using the bluetooth tethering options.
Hi, i've just found out how to connect my phone (xperia x10) to my just arrived transformer.
I've been looking all through the forum to find out how to share my phone's connection but i didn't find any solution so, i hope, my reply will help at least you not to waste time any further
Simply install "PdaNet Tablet" both on your tablet and your phone (yes, PdaNet TABLET also on your phone).
This is how it worked for me:
1) Start "pdanet tablet" on your transformer and set the proxy hostname and port as stated in the program (127.0.0.1 and 1234)
2) Start "pdanet for tablet" on your phone and click "enable pda server"
3) Wait a few seconds
4) Allow your phone to open bluetooth and be visible
5) On your tablet, on the "pdanet tablet" screen click "tap to discover new phones"
6) On your tablet click on your phone's name
7) DONE!
I hope this helped

Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. Has anyone had any luck tethering their Tab 10.1 to an Android phone running Cyanogen Mode 7?
I am able to get tether my Tab to every ROM I've had so far except for CM7.
I've tried Barnacle, WiFi Tether 3, the Hotspot setting under CM7. Nothing works with the Tab.
Keeps saying 'Obtaining IP address ...' but never connects.

Finally able to connect.
I was trying to use WiFi Tether 3.0, because that was on the only app that worked prior to installing CM7 on my phone.
It seemed to no longer work for me using CM7.
I tried Barnacle Tether app, but still had no luck.
Wireless Tether 2.0.7 was the app I was using in the past, but my Tab wouldn't connect to it because it was using ad-hoc
I decided to give it a shot, since I had no luck with the other apps.
For some reason Wireless Tether 2.0.7 works fine with the Tab while running CM7 on my phone.

Did you test to see if any other device besides your Tab could connect to your hotspot? It doesn't sound like the Tab was the problem.
Wireless Tether was the app I was always using to tether. I was running stock SenseUI rooted. After getting my tab, I noticed that it would not connect like all my other devices would. Someone told me about WiFi Tether 3 Experimental, it worked. Something to do with the Tab not being able to connect in ad-hoc mode.
Once I installed CM7, it no longer worked. I tried Barnacle while running CM7. My netbook connected, but my Tab didn't for some reason. I then decided to go back to my old app, Wireless Tether, to see if it would work, and it did.
This is the same app that wouldn't connect to my Tab running SenseUI, but it connected fine running CM7.
The built-in one on CM7 is the best in my opinion, but in order for it to work you need to uninstall all the aftermarket ones and reboot. For some reason the aftermarket ones mess with the built-in one.
I agree that using Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Tethering is much nicer than any of the standalone apps.

Mine just work fine, but it does give me hard time in the office. It'll get connected for few seconds and then disconnect. It keeps doing the same thing. By the way, I'm using the Mosaic VI built for Captivate, that has inbuilt tethering as most custom roms have. Other than office place, it works absolutely fine even when I'm on commuter bus.

Uninstalling the aftermarket apps allowed the one for CM7 to connect. Is there a way to create a shortcut to enable it in CM7?
I have CM7.1 nightly 143 on my Evo and built in tethering works fine, I am even able to tether 4G.
Wireless Tether app used to work when I was on the stable version of CM7 but once I upgraded to RC1 WT stopped working and caused built in tether to not work as well.
Once I deleted WT then built in started working again.

That's interesting. I'm running CM7 nightly builds on my Captivate and paired it with the Tab via Bluetooth, turned off WiFi on the Tab and it instantly said Bluetooth tethered. (There is a larger BT icon on the Tab and the Captivate shows Portable Hotspot blue icon in the notification menu)
I was surprised with how seamless it all was, was pleasantly surprised by it because I was only pairing it to use TexTab and something possessed me to try turning the WiFi off.

You have to use the native tether hotspot to work with the Xoom. or you will need to modify the WPA file on the Xoom if you will be using any other tethering app that uses Ad-Hoc. If your using the Android tether app you'll need to choose the Facinate phone.

I bought this with the intentions of using the wifi from my phone. Did not know that the fire could not connect to adhoc connections. Is there any way around this? As of now the fire is pretty useless to me if i cannot get this situation sorted out. Thanks for any help.

You have to look up on how your phone does its wifi hotspotting.
I have a galaxy S and when I set up the wifi, kindle fire works perfectly fine from it.
Search around here, someone had mentioned an app that will share it as infrastructure and not adhoc, which I believe is what you would need.
That app would be wifi tether if you are on Android

I can connect to my Inspire 4g running CM7.
Try some different ROMS and see which ones will let you?
I am having trouble using the web browser with my Droid RAZR's wifi hotspot on verizon but book downloading, app downloading, and even prime video streaming seems to work fine. Not sure why the web browser doesn't.
Using my gf droidx and wifi tether I can finally get it to connect but then abruptly met with a verizon wallgarden page to sign into mobile hot spot.

Well as someone else mentioned, cyanogenmod on samsung galaxy s has no problems tethering. I still need to mod the Fire to allow adhoc tethering as I need it to be able to access my laptop's adhoc wifi... I think there are some files that need modifying i.e.
/system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
I had a go but its beyond me abilities. Anyone else keen may gleen something from:

Hey Guys- So I have the samsung fascinate and have been trying to tether. I did some digging and figured out how too. This was on XDA archive I found:
Google android wifi tether. its on google code, get the latest experimental version under downloads.
set device profile to nexus one and setup method to netd(master) and it'll work with anything.

I downloaded the top "wifi_tether_v3_1-beta7apk" opened it with the "astro File" app, and it works great!!!!
Good job nfrees114, works perfectly with my atrix.
I'm using my AKF on my way to work through my phone without any issues
I'm also able to WiFi tether to my Android phone (Droid 3) using the WiFi Tether App.
I have had no problems tethering using my Droid Incredible (running CM7).

Sorry my ignorance, I am noob and considering purchasing KF, but this is important
Can I connect KF with my Galaxy S II via Wi-Fi and send files from Galaxy to KF?
I wonder if the N1 Netd(master) Method will work on the og kindle. Gonna try when I get home..will report back later.

What about using a service like Dropbox? Upload a file from one device, and download it to another. If we are talking about video files however, that might not be practical, and then I'd suggest doing it via a PC (if available). I'm not aware of any apps at the moment that allow sharing of filesystems across devices. I'm sure there are possibly ways with things like SSH, but that might be annoying to setup for the average user.

If you have Internet it should not be a problem you can use Amazon cloud, but I think to use phone like storage device, for example on flights or places you could not use Internet

So, without internet, it's highly likely you wouldn't have WiFi on either tablet, how would you network the tablets together without a network?! One of your tablets would have to be a Hotspot to provide the IP address to the other (and I'm not sure about the software available to do this). Even then, you'd need some underlying software that was able to mount/read the sdcard from the other device.
If you did have WiFi, then it's likely you have Internet, in which case you've just answered your own question!
Not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying it seems to be a little impractical for the times you don't have internet, in which case be organized enough to transfer files in advance.
