Root Or Not?

Should I root and void my warranty? Anybody have experience getting a Unlocked phone repaired?

I havent heard of a single person being rejected because of their bootloader being unlocked as of yet. Also swetland did say they are working with HTC to remove the warranty void.

I rooted my g1 and had a blast. But I found myself flashing roms constantly. You can never settle and there's always a new rom just around the corner. It was fun for several months but I got burned out finally and it was a relief when I got a mytouch. I kept it stock and was really happy with it. I don't plan on rooting the nexus. I think android is an awesome system the way it is, and I enjoy waiting for ota's now. I can tether, get MT apps. For me rooting just doesn't add a lot to my personal experience. This phone flies even without properly utilizing its ram. Although after all of the heartbreak from anticipating countless sense ui Roms on the g1 that were never completely usable I admit Im curious about sense on the nexus. But android 2.1 is the best ui on a mobile device in my opinion. We'll see if that changes with iPhone 4g. Incidentally, I love the competition between the IPhone and android. The consumers are the real winners!

I am keeping the stock rom too....
At least it is not sluggish like all previous htc phones stock rom
don't intend to root it unless i got really bored of the stock rom.
Initially wanted to root to tether, now i am relying on Pdanet...
Does anyone knows if rooting will allow faster tether?

I'm using pdanet and loving it. Couldn't have possibly been any easier to set up

PDANet is very cool & easy to use! Only issue is after 14 days, you can't access https sites (only if you buy their app)!

2X that...Purchase full version ($29). Still worth it if u do a lot of teathering & don't want to root yet.

Now that's all nice and dandy keeping it stock - for those who can. But what about those of us who have to root the damn thing?..
I ordered an N1, and I would have gladly kept it stock, at least initially, to keep the warranty. However, since google are lazy or just plain don't give a damn, there are no hebrew fonts installed by default; so in order to read SMS's being sent to me, not to mention hebrew webpages, I must root the phone right from the start. Now it is simply unfair that I'll void my warranty just to get my language showing... So if indeed the warranty void would be removed, it would just make my year

That's a bummer. With my g1 I could just unroot whenever I needed to send it in for warranty replacement. Is that not possible with the nexus?

not yet. the current root method is a manufacturer provided entry that also automatically invalidates the warranty (barring absolutely non-questionable hardware defects, like dust under the screen or dead pixels or something)

Actually, its perfectly possible to unroot the device and restore the software to stock.
However, in order to root in the first place, you have to Unlock the Bootloader and THAT is the sticking point, as its a one way, once only thing that cannot be reversed. It leaves a little unlocked padlock on your boot screen that also cannot be changed.

Its also worth weighing up how long your warranty lasts for before rooting in the EU its 2 years (see link below) which is a fairly long warranty. So I suppose until we can relock the bootloader, unlocking depends on how much you value your warranty.

Noob question

So since mytouch was updated to 2.2.1 is it worth rotting still?
My old mytouch was in pretty bad condition so i never decided to root it... Well it fell in a big puddle of water so im filed a insurance claim and will have my new one Monday. Seeing as it wont be in such beat up condition do you think its worth rooting?
What are some of the benefits from gaining root? Not much of a phone hacking guy lol.
Know my way around a computer very well just i do not know what kind of benefits you will gain once ur root your phone.
I'v seen many links on how to root it not sure which one will be the best as most of them seem a bit old. Not sure if i will get another original mytouch or one with the 3.5mm jack

Not much of a reading guy are you either? It would really only take you 5min to either search here or google benifits of rooting, reasons to root etc....
But, if you cant do that, Id stay away from trying to root yoru phone because you will probably just end up bricking it and blaming it on a hard working developer

[Q] Knox - Does it really matter?

YES! I've used the search until my head started to spin and got no real answer to this.
I've read and read about the "Knox thing" and that it trips the flag, and so did it on my phone when I did an upgrade.
How how does tripping the Knox affect my phone?
In what way does it change it?
I know, you have no warranty, but that is always a risk you have to take with any phone/hacking. That is my decision to take.
But any REAL implications? I tried to read and read up about it and I don't see the "thing" with it?
I read and read posts about how to not trip it so I really wonder if it does something that affects the phone in a negative sense?
Does it hinder me to have root and load custom roms?
Does it hinder me in side-loading things?
What does this damn flag really do with the phone???
I read that I can't downgrade my roms from 4.2.2 to an older version but then, why should I?
I want the newest, coolest, best roms that I can get here by the amazing devs!
When I had my HTC One X I had to register on HTC-Dev to get a key to unlock the phone, so I knew what I was doing.
I was breaking the warranty and I was willingly doing that because I wanted to have custom roms.
I like to hack around and I soft-bricked more phones and times then I can remember.
In the Samsung world there is/was the Triangle away since Samsung has the counter for how many times you flashed
(but it doesn't seem to affect the phone in anyway, as far as I have read or does it?). So you might have been a bit spoiled
If this is "just" about warranty then I read that some tripped it with a normal Kies upgrade so I doesn't seem perfect.
Please, enlighten me. I can't find any good answers on this.

I got a post-anesthetic amnesia after a surgery. What they told me was that I tried to start up my phone but it didn't want too (BAD Foxdoggie! )
so I threw it in the wall 2 times and then I broke it in half when they forbid me to throw it anymore.
No recollection at all, but I wish I had since breaking a phone in 2 parts isn't something you do every day
The insurance company wanted me to send in the phone for repairs and it was in at least 512 parts.
Was quite fun to go to the store and ask them to send it to service. :laugh:
Btw, keep away from the glass if it breaks! It gets razor sharp. The next day I have to pull out micro-parts from my hands that was lodged in the skin and my hands was cut all over, but then I'm good with a scalpel

If there are anything that will make my phone function in worse way I will make a formal complaint to Samsung here in Sweden since
I didn't buy a car to find that after a routine service, suddenly had the speed limited to 70 km/h...
I talked to my phone-company and they didn't knew what Knox was? AT ALL.
He just told me to use Triangle Away if it would break (or the same if I would jail-break my iPhone)!
So you even get instructions on what to do to make it "look" ok from your own provider since they are so well aware that people hack/root their phones.
Someone said in a post that only 1% root/jailbreak. I call that bull. But I think that more people jailbreak their iPhones then root their Androids.
But 1%? Just the fact that your cell-provider informs you how to "restore" your phone (and even asked me what rom I'm using!?!).
So maybe hard-core freaks are 1% but "normal" rooters/jailbreakers are way way way more.
It's the same with internet. Right now I have 500 Mbit and do the provider REALLY think I use that to browse Facebook faster?
So they all play a double game. At least in Sweden but I think that is quite universal?
This is my first Samsung. I'm a HTC-guy and if this Knox hinders me while other companies open up theirs instead, it will be my last.
I got a great deal on this phone and thought that since Samsung has the largest base it would be nice to see the awsome devs here.

well as far as i know you can do all that as long as you don't care about the warranty, but root apps might nor work as they should(or may not work at all).
i could be wrong about all this

KNOX is a security feature enabled by Samsung for corporate things. Does a normal end user need it probably not and should be an option. However Samsugn decided to roll it out to all phones regardless.
If you have a KNOX enabled handset, you can do as you please, root, install custom recovery, flash roms, flash kernels, however it will disable KNOX and will set the KNOX couneter to 0x1, once this is done you can not reverse it.
As an effect to warranty, it's probably country dependent. There is a warranty thread, some users have sent their phones in once KNOX has been tripped and phones have been repaired.

I've been reading THIS thread and was wondering.. If I ROOT my Galaxy S5 will I loose everything?
If not.. What will I loose?
Also, I've never rooted a device before, Just wanting to know a couple of things..
Is it safe?
How complex is it?
What will I loose?
Can I 'De-Root'?

Well, I have rooted many devices myself...but the S5, has a new security precaution that throws a code if you send in your phone. I forgot that its called, but basically it really voids your warranty FOR SURE. We use to be able to rest how many flashes we did, now not as easy. So if you think you need your warranty, DO NOT ROOT YET. Not safe if you have warranty....but they are working on a workaround.
Rooting isnt to hard if you READ INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY. Its pretty easy, but I say again, READ INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY! And as far as "what ROM would I use" question...thats alllllllll up to you. I say to each their own. Most ROMs are the same, just a couple of different boot or speed, but just find the one that fits you.
When you root, you dont loose anything. Its when you flash a new ROM is when you loose EVERYTHING. I suggest to back up everything with something like Super Backup or anything that will back up contacts, apps, call logs, ect. Again, to each their own on what app you use. I personally use Super Backup and it works for me all the time.
As I know from past phones I have rooted, YES you can de-root your phone, but when you do, you again have to wipe EVERYTHING and go back to stock. But remember, if you root RIGHT THIS MINUET...YOU WONT GET UPDATES OR ANYTHING BECAUSE OF THE KNOX SECURITY. So personally, I would wait till there's a work around....so you dont screw yourself.

The warrenty side, to be honest I'm not that fussed about.. If it comes to it I'm sure dropping the phone down some stairs and phoning the insurance would work?
The main reason that I'm wanting ROOT is a app I come across called Freedom? That allows free in app purchases?
Also, Will I loose anything on the device such as fingerprint scanning ect? When I was going to ROOT my S4 the thread I read said I wouldn't be able to use Air View (or something like that)
I'm not a total noob .. Just wanting to check a couple of things over first.

Fingerprint scanning etc will not be affected by root and my previous phones, S, S3 and S4, didn't lose anything by rooting either. You can also use TA to set things back to official apart from Knox.

Exactly what he said. You dont "lose" anything when ya root. You gain access to your ENTIRE phone when you gain root. Only when ya flash a ROM is when you lose things, but can get them back depending on the ROM.
As far as "paid apps" goes. We arent supposed to talk about that on the forum if I remember correctly...LOL...but check out APKGalaxy, pretty good app. ANDDDDD...as far as throwing it down some stairs and whatnot....Sometimes they can recover from that and see that your security was breached, but maybe Im wrong. Im just keeping an eye out for a safer way to root. But by all means, go for it!!!

Terrified to Root but desperately want to

I just got my Moto X Pure Edition (THIS one) and I really want to root it and get all the things I had with my G3 and back when I had an JB'd iPhone 4s, but my experience with the G3 was terrible.
I ended up having to RMA it 4 times through my insurance because there was something I was using on the G3 that slowed it to a vista-esque pace, and despite lots of reading on this site and others I managed to brick it :silly: 4 times :silly: in 4 different ways just trying to put it back to stock. It cost me far too much money but I was stupid enough to keep trying before finally settling on stock to avoid more issues.
I love this new phone, but I know I could tweak it more to what I like and from what it looks like in Heisenberg's Guide it is fairly safe and simple as far as roots go. I feel so stupid having screwed up with the LG that I don't want to try it. I'm a CS major and I've spent so much time messing with all sorts of things I never thought it would be a problem.
So my question is, within the realm of using Xposed and a few root apps/functions (no custom ROMs or anything just because I can't afford not having a phone for a week if I ruin it again), is it relatively safe to root the X Pure and are these tools (Universal Tool, Restore to stock tool) or a manual set of steps a good bet for returning to stock and removing root? I just want to make sure if I end up over my head I can get back to stock and be happy with what is already a great phone. Sorry if I sound like a huge _____ but I'm still in school and I want to avoid further grief as best I can.

From what I've been hearing, the 808 is a tricky processor... Besides xposed and regular terminal code changes, such as screen density, you should be good. Although, if your going in and messing with code idk what to say, experienced devs are even having a tough time getting this thing to boot on their custom ROMs...

Another thing just to keep in mind when talking people about your qualifications, saying you are getting your Computer Science degree is pretty broad. First, we don't know what year you're in and second we don't know your concentration. I have a BBA for instance. A BBA in what though? If I went applying to random jobs, or trying to network that would leave more questions than answers. What do I have a BBA in? Well mine is in Management, so yes I can do basic accounting, financing, marketing, but my concentration is being able to interpret financial data and making decisions that would benefit a company or organization. Does that make me advanced enough to be an accountant, even though we both have BBAs? Hell no! Same goes for CS. You may be getting your computer science degree, but are you majoring in Network Security, Hardware, C++, Java, Oracle, etc... There is so much information missing that just stating "I'm getting my CS degree" isn't enough for anyone to give you a solid answer, especially not knowing what year you are in. If you are a junior, then you've just barely scratched the surface of what you will be studying for the next 2 years. Just a little FYI for future sakes :thumbup:

Didn't think to specify, my bad, yeah I'm just a junior and I feel like I haven't learned much in the way of things. I just want to get a few small things from xposed and others, no plans on changing anything myself

I own Oneplus One and rooted immediately with blisspop rom. I can't use phn without root access coz almost all ma apps need root permission. Yes its risky to root a costly device but if u need it so desperately den u should definitely root it....

Again, thanks for the positive input. I bricked them following the stock flashing methods on this website, I wasn't just shooting in the dark. And out of another half dozen phones I've only ever had an issue with the G3. Can you not? I'd like to learn here, not argue.

When it comes to just simply rooting and installing xposed, I don't see how you can brick it following step by step instructions. I will say this. If you brick it and you can't figure out how to get it back to stock, Motorola has made it clear you're on your own. So there's that, but using a simple toolkit can make a worlds difference in preventing mistakes. Yes, you'll feel like an amateur, and let's be honest, you are right now, but it beats losing $400.
You also just got it and you have no idea if you have any hardware issues that many have had to RMA within the first week for. So maybe sitting on it for a week or 2 couldn't hurt to eliminate that possibility as well (Bad CPU/GPU, Speaker, Light Leakage, loose parts when shaken, excess battery drain/heat, and turbo charge randomly not working, etc.). Motorola/Lenovo were at first being lenient about replacing these even with unlocked bootloaders and even giving people a month to send these back, they are wising up and change the rules since people have been making such a big fuss about the bootloader thing, and posting about the one month holding time (now I've read recently it's 3 days?), so just be careful, that's all.

Sounds like a solid plan. With the G3 rooting was always easy but the only known way that I had found for the t mobile model was to use the LG flashing tool that looked a lot like the one they used in-house to restore it, and despite following a pretty straightforward guide there were 3 different errors I got right towards the end of the process that would lock the phone in a download mode state. After using TWRP to get it back to being usable I'd still be stuck with root, and trying a few other ways would screw me.
As far as using the tools, are the 2 I linked in the OP the proper ones to be using? I'll definitely hold off on it for a while to make sure nothing comes up, thanks for that info. I'm guessing the 2 year protection plan is moot if I'm stuck with no way to erase evidence of a software issue arising from root, so that's a thing to think about as well. Do you know if unlocking the bootloader voids that protection plan? I'm looking for the TOS.

Judging from the attitudes of you two it's a wonder I stopped using this forum. Thanks fellas, really shows the quality of the community here.

I have always rooted my phones from my original HTC incredible, galaxy nexus, HTC DNA, and HTC ONE M8... that being said I am very familiar with HTC and how they work and I always had the HTC RUU file ready in case of emergency but never had to use it. I'm not sure if Motorola has a RUU file or a Fastboot IMG like Nexus devices that can bring your phone back from the dead as this is my first Moto because I never wanted to deal with the encrypted bootloader on the VZW moto phones.
I honestly can say that I have been finding root less and less needed since my M8 and I dont think I will unlock or root my Pure Edition.
The reason is that there is no bloat that I cant get rid of, I see no need for a custom kernel since the newer processors are really fast, it basically runs stock android so its not bogged down by Sense or touchwiz.
I honestly can say I like the minor additions Moto has made with the Pure Edition... I have used exposed and I really dont see the use for most of its functions for more than a week before its just gimmicky.
Once updates are stopped or the Development community is way ahead of OTA updates we will still have an easy OEM process to unlock root and flash. But for now I'm sticking with what I paid for... The Moto experience

If you follow step by step instruction you will be ok.... I have rooted tons of phones and bricked a couple but was able to fix them. Its a chance you take but hey if you mess up it is a excuse to get a new cell lol. But honestly your streak with rooting is bad, maybe you shouldn't try anymore.

I'm sorry I offended you. Based on your history I think it a bad idea for you to mess with your phone. Not what you wanted to hear but I honestly think it's the truth. Not all computer science majors can handle phone tech. How many of your classmates have iPhones? How many of them with Android phones root?

Come on, don't pigeon hole everyone on XDA. You had to have known you were going to receive some sarcastic replies. That's like Plaxico Burress asking what kind of gun he should buy next. The consensus here seems to be genuine. You shouldn't mess with root anymore but it's your money. Thing is, rooting is not hard and not dangerous if you follow directions closely, yet you've managed to brick several devices. I rooted my phone to install Xposed but due to battery issues I have stopped using it. Look in the Xposed thread for more info. I would say just wait, its not worth it now IMO.

IMO, the only reason to root is to install AdAway.
Can't stand Ads. But other than that, the experience that Motorola has set up for us is perfect. I won't be adding anything else like Xposed, or install a custom ROM until I get bored with my phone, which will probably be in another six months. I've set myself up with an unlocked bootloader and root for when the time comes though. But for now, I'm happy.
I gotta say that to me (sophmore in college as a Biology major, completely unrelated to compsci), it seems pretty hard to brick a phone just trying to root it. Especially with the very detailed guides that Hesisenberg has set up for us, thank that man.
You gotta decide if what you plan on doing with your root is worth it though. I spent about 1.5 hours rooting my phone, and I'm not even sure that the time was worth AdAway.
